Hello there. What are the English written books that I, as an English learner, need to read as well as some Russian novels for that matte? But except for Dostoyevsky, please.

You could read Nabokov I suppose. He was also Russian yet wrote some of the best English novels of the 20th century. His large vocabulary could be a problem, though.

English is so primitive that it prevents you from enjoying good literature by far

Writers general?

Submissions, first drafts, edits, rejections, habits, etc. I finally got my first acceptance. It was submitted roughly four months ago, way beyond their "we answer by" date, so I withdrew it to polish and submit elsewhere. Got this email after I withdrew.

Hi Anon,

I'd like to apologize for taking an incredibly long time to respond to your submission, "Insert Decent Title" We've been putting the finishing touches on our fifth print issue, so things have been a little hectic around here.

All excuses aside, we like your story very much and would like to publish it among our future content. Please let me know if this suits so I can send a formal acceptance your way.

Regards,

Current workload/projects?

Out and about, waiting for a rejection from Apex for this horror story I created in a workshop. The teacher said I probably set my sights a lil high for submitting to that publication, and offered some alternatives for when it ends up getting rejected.

I had two flash pieces submitted, one pretty good, one kind of out there. Decided to let a local no pay, but credible journal run with the good one. It had already been submitted before I had vowed no more no pay submissions.

First draft of a short story is finished as of two days ago. I want to let it cool for a week before rewrites, but I don't have anything else I'm working on at the moment.

I've had a first draft of a novel done that I could edit in the meantime, but it's my first, so you can already guess the kind of quality it is. Not sure if all the rewrites in the world can save that thing.

I'm Scandinavian and it's unbearably hot right now. I have a time thinking with the heat. Is there any tips from experienced anons how to keep cold and lower your body temperature during summer? What I am trying right now is sitting in a draft with a bucket of cold water under my desk and dipping my feet in it occasionally.

I finished a third re-write myself a while ago. It's my first "finished" novel, and I am going through it right now. I have high hopes. It's a notch above everything I've done before and I find it genuinely interesting to read. It's still absolutely disgusting, but the first chapter is finished, which is a great success.

What's the horror story about? I like horror stories.

I have quite a few books on my to read list. If someone could tell me which one of these books I should get and which ones are good and bad, I'd appreciate it. If nothing else, I'm just doing this for curiosity so I can get some sort of general sense of the opinions on these books. It just interests me, it may or may not shape how I view the book, it depends.

The Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinski
Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Crash: A Novel by J. G. Ballard
Atomised by Michel HouellebecqThe Temptation to Exist by E. M. Cioran
Moravagine (New York Review Books Classics) by Blaise Cendrars
Suttree by Cormac McCarthy
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Cows by Mr Matthew Stokoe
Hogg: A Novel by Samuel R. Delany
Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics) by Emily Brontë
A Short History of Decay by E. M. Cioran
Tropic of Capricorn by Miller, Henry
Our Lady of the Flowers by Genet, Jean
Steppenwolf by Hesse, Hermann

Painted Bird is quite and experience.
The Classics on there like Lolita and Wuthering Heights and Steppenwolf are obvious.
Miller is boring
Suttree is McCarthy channeling Faulkner with all his power.
Hogg is pretty on par with literotica fetish works.
NYRB books are always worth a read.

Hello, Lit. Can you recommend me any books on being a man (patrician/alpha or however you call it). I've recently turned 18 and realised that I ought to get my shit together. It can either be a non-fiction book with advices or a fiction that has a character that can make a sound role model ( but I would prefer the more practical ones though)

So far I've read/ reading atm:
The Art of Manliness by Brett McKay and Kate McKay
As a Man Thinketh by James Allen
How to be a Man by Glenn O'Brien
Stuff every man should know by Brett Cohen
(The Odyssey as well because it is somewhat relevant)

Basically /lit/ how do I turn from a Telemachus into Odysseus or auburn hair Menelaus without going to war? Thanks in advance

Hello /lit/, it's story time. Only one word per reply. If the thread is still up, I will post the whole story at the end when the thread is near the limit. Let's see what funny story you can come up with.

Also, any words listed multiple times in a row consecutively, will be ignored. So no BUMP BUMP BUMP or to to to or anything like that. Only the first one will be counted.

Good luck!

I lost my kindle fire a few months ago and have yet to replace it. It isn't that big of a deal because I like physical copies anyway, and I have several semi-competent to above-average used book stores in my area. I also wouldn't be too concerned if I could still frequent the decent libraries in my 'city' (Albuquerque), but a youthful indiscretion from the 90's prohibits me from obtaining a library card.

What I'm wondering is which of the online sites offering 'free' pdfs if you join up (of course with the option to cancel after you get your free book) are reputable. I'm nervous about giving out my info just to get the new Jack Ketchum, John Connolly, and Joe Hill books just because they don't carry them in my 3rd-world country of a town. I also wouldn't mind a few books from Palladin Press.

Does anyone have any knowledge regarding which of these sites are legit? I could order the newest books by the aforementioned scribes from Hastings but it would probably be cheaper just to buy another kindle. I'd rather just get them free on a trial basis via pdf, and either cancel upon reciept or continue the service if I'm blown away by it.

Help me out here guys.

read the sticky how to pirate books; basically you either use a pirate library like libgen, or a pirate irc, or a torrent, neither of those asks your info and usually doesn't even need a registration

Since I've lost my kindle, I've downloaded on my phone Dancing in the Glory of Monsters, Programmed to Kill, Hunter, Brave New World, and On Writing without any problems. Other than Hunter (which was even more ridiculous than TD), they were all nonfiction. When I try to get Hill's The Fireman or Connoly's Song of Shadows, I get these knockoff 'Give us your cc#, but we won't charge you if you cancel within a month' bullshits. Now I assume that some of these sites are reputable, because similar sites dealing with other media exist and flourish. I'm mostly thinking of hbogo, but I'm certain there are other examples.

I just don't know who exactly to trust, because no one fucking reads anymore and any site I encounter could either be the best site for readers in the world or a giant cactus up the ass.

I'm fairly new to rhe internet. Vpn tor hacker bullshit might be on the horizon for me, but for now I just want to read some fucking books they don't carry in this miserable ghosttown. I just don't want to get raped after putting out my cc number. I got enough of that in prison.

what are some modern, really funny books that I could read? just finished Confederacy of Dunces, and it was great!

Avoid classics or memes.

Yes.

Buy a refurbished amazon Kindle paperwhite, then download the program 'calibre' which is a book sorting library, then proceed to use libgen.io and scihub to collect all your books and journals, add them onto calibre, then send them to conversion to your kindle.
