Just from my personal experience, i got no idea how the US handles it. From what i've heard it's ridicolous... students driving their lamborghini to classes while to doing no research whatsoever but having dedicaded people cleaning the floors several times a day to some that can't even buy food

I honestly did not do enough research in my undergrad/masters to say for sure, but what I did I definitely enjoyed more than I'm enjoying work right now. But yeah I mean if you can't see yourself doing academic research forever then maybe phd doesn't make sense. Though plenty of industry jobs do require a phd, at least at my company we do.

You are encouraged to make at least that ammount of publications and reports or you won't receive money after half a year. phds also work as tutors and have to do lots of works besides working and research; they actually work as assistants for younger students and undergrads, not only for making this compound and that compound.

Never said your life would be luxury, working 55+ hours a weeks is common and the rent for a small flat consumes 1000$ +/-. It's no fun but it's doable, that was my point. I've often wondered about this. My running theory is that magic is a game with exciting stuff going on but the rules are pretty predictable and don't change super often, which might make it more attractive to people on the autism spectrum. The people who get really really into it might be the kinds of people on the spectrum that hyperfocus on their interests at the expense of other things and might forget to do personal hygiene stuff.

This is all just conjecture, though, since my friends who play it casually have pretty good hygiene and you can't exactly run a census of autism spectrum at a huge tournament.
