Just found a calguns post from 2015 referring specifically to 88/05/35s, and the ATF letter in it states they are considered antiques. Whether or not that has changed since then I don't know, that's just what I found after a quick google search.

>>34905040
Yeah, I think it'd be antique.
>>
>you will never bayonet darkies with your martini
>>
>>34905040
Yes.
If the receiver was made before 1898 then it's legally an antique and not a firearm according to the ATF.

You can find Finn nuggets sold as antiques since the receiver was made before 1898 even though they were rebuild by Finland.

Judging by the large amount of German replaced parts, and the fact there was no crest stamped on the rifle, my current assumption is that it was captured as a barreled receiver.

>>34904938
I have several things significantly older than that.
>>
>>34906094
It's a British Military Martini action rifle with a barrel on it that is rifled using the Metford technique. That's what the difference is between Martinis Metford, Henry and Enfield. They're just different types of rifling. Martini being the action.

Martini Metfords were developed at the time when .303 was just getting proper development. They hadn't perfected cordite yet so they got the help of Col. Rubin from Switzerland who assisted the stopgap development of a compressed pellet of black powder for use in the .303 cartridge. Most Martini Metfords you can find today have shit bored due to the super hot charges and high pressures being put through them alongside the corrosive nature of BP and the rounded nature of Metford rifling in the first place.
>>
>>34906212
You can also find the Lee-Metford. It's the same idea except most got converted with Enfield barrels.
>>
>>34906212
I found a good looking Khyber Pass copy on armslist for like 200 bucks. It's not safe to shoot, but would it be worth going through the effort of getting someone to rebarrel it for 303 or 308? Even possible?
>>
>>34906235
Rebarreling would be pointless given the dubious metallurgy of the action itself. You should be able to find a British or Nepalese Martini action if you want to build your own sporter for a lot less than $200. Single shot Martini action .22lr target rifles used to be super popular in the British Commonwealth and they're super fun and accurate. You should do one up in .32special or something cute.
>>
>>34906212
Bores are bad because the Metford system was too fragile for use with the hot, erosive cordite loads. It took the Brits close to 40 years to come up with a cordite that was bore friendly and by that time it was easier to just switch to a standard smokeless.
Metford barrels that have only been used with blackpowder or standard nitrocellulose powders tend to be in ecent shape.
>>
Hey everboddy
Ben witch Classic Firearms here
>>
>>34906296
You're only partially correct. The black powder .303 was a hotter cartridge than any cordite military load done. It had a nasty tendency to burn out bores a lot faster than cordite.
>>
>>34906315
No it wasn't. The standard pressure of the .303 did not change between the three different propellants.

Do you all reload for your Martinis? Any tips for a someone who wants to get into to it just to reload 450 Martini?
>>
>>34909632
For starters you'll have to load .577/450 instead. You'll want to invest in a bullet casting setup. Bertram makes the best brass for this cartridge but it's expensive. Dies are available from several manufacturers. You'll need to lube your bullets if firing blackpowder, use a 50/50 beeswax and tallow mixture and over powder card. I'd also recommend using a drop tube for powder, it fills the case more evenly.

It's a fun cartridge to shoot and totally worth doing if you wanna pretend to remove Zulu.

Got it at an auction. No one was interested in it because no one knew what it was, and tbf neither did I because I was still newgunz. But, fuck, $50? It could be total garbage and be worth $50. So I bid the only bid and only later learned what a deal I'd gotten.

>Nice. I don't local auctions can do guns anymore since I'm in WA and we have "universal" background checks.

The Auction house wasnt ever really sure what it was and simply had it listed as "Amberg Rifle, 8mm."

Ours still makes us do a 4473 and get checked and all that shit before we can claim them, is that different that your system?
>>
>>34912953

That's all we have to do, but I'm guessing a lot of smaller auctioneers won't want to go to the trouble. I have no idea, I don't have a clue how to find auctions/estate sales in the area.

Don't bother with the Gahendras or Francottes. Get a Martini-Henry MkIV C untouched from IMA - the later ones are in better condition and have a really good chance of firing. Yak grease is easier to clean off than cosmoline.

Well the 88/05/35 isn't really a Mauser. It's a Mannlicher.

That true, but I was mainly trying to say that both my oldest guns are super smooth to operate.

But I NEED a real mannlicher, like a Carcano or a M95.

Well that's the thing, Mannlichers are very smooth rifles.

Also a Carcano isn't really a Mannlicher. It just uses the magazine system.
>>

The Carcano isn't a Mannlicher. It uses the same magazine system but so does a few non-mannlicher designs. The Carcano doesn't share much with other European designs despite some people insisting it's a copy of the Gew.88. It's pretty unique in reality.

Jesus FUCKING Christ. I was cleaning my Type 99 after a day of shooting noncorrosive Hornady loads when I noticed two crack looking notches on the left side of the receiver. Felt my heart smash right through the floor as it's an all matching and complete rifle with AA, monopod, and dust cover. "Strongest action of WW2 my ass", I thought. Then after some careful searching I found that these notches are absolutely commonplace on Arisakas. Pic related.

I can just imagine the fucking designer of this rifle chuckling to himself as he imagined some dumb American fudd panicking thinking he turned his prized shooter into a wall hanger after discovering the notches, thinking his receiver was cracked. You got me good, Mr. Arisaka you slippery slant eyed gook. You fucking got me good.

>I was unaware there was more than one type.
Oh fuck no pham; the Chinese copied half a dozen Mauser models; the Mauser Werke M1907, the FN M1924 (Type-21), the Mauser Werke Standardmodell (Type-24), and then there's the oddballs like the Mukden T13 Mauser/Arisaka hybrid and various small-scale local copies of everything from Gew.98 to Vz.24.
