Milsurp General- favorite fun eddion
Post your favorite milsurp
Mine is my mosin 91/30, I fell for the meme and it is my favorite rifle, others are better to shoot but nothing can come close to my first.

I saw Alden from the Mosin Crate at a Gander Mountain in Raleigh yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Mosin Nagants in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the rifles and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each rifle and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Took my Gewehr 98 out to shoot for the first time, feels great owning my first gun. Question: with the Lange-Vizier sights, what is the sight picture supposed to look like? I know that the rear sights are supposed to line up with the top of the front blade on most guns, and I also know that the Gewehr only goes down to 400m. With those in mind, when I have the sights lined up like normal, I should be shooting high, right? Because when I did that, it was actually shooting low. I'm fairly convinced it was shooter error, since I'm new to marksmanship and the windage grouping was excellent, it was only elevation that was off.

Also, I ran about 20 patches down the bore afterwards and it still came out dirty. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

Finall, should I be wiping off the coating of solvent? Seems like solvent of any kind shouldn't be resting on the gun's surface, even with oil to protect it.

>what is the sight picture supposed to look like?
I put the top of the "A" front sight blade level with the top of the "V" notch at the rear.
>I should be shooting high, right?
>Because when I did that, it was actually shooting low.
All depends on how far you were from your target, and the ballistic trajectory of the ammunition load you were shooting.
For instance, I'm firing Turkish surplus ball through my Vz.98 (Czech-made Gew.98 copy). Turkish ball is a copy of the Imperial German 1905 S-Patrone cartridge (154gr flat-base spitzer @2950fps from the 740mm barrel of a Gew.98) that was designed for use in the Gew.98. At 100 yards my projectiles are impacting about 12" above my point-of-aim. At 200 yards they're impacting about 28-30" above my point-of-aim, because between 100 and 200 yards the bullet is still rising in its arc relative to the sight line. A bit beyond 200yds it will gravity will start to win out and pull it back toward the sight line and ideally the trajectory of the bullet will intersect with the sight line at 400m (if the bullet were allowed to travel to 400m, rather than bury itself in the berm behind the target).
>Also, I ran about 20 patches down the bore afterwards and it still came out dirty. Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?
Did you clean out the bore before you fired it? What make of ammo were you shooting in it?

>Finall, should I be wiping off the coating of solvent?
Always run dry patches through to absorb solvents, then a lightly-oiled patch to leave behind a protective coating to inhibit corrosion.

Mismatched is to be expected due to the massive number of mandatory upgrades the French made to just about every single rifle they ever had in inventory, including their colonial ones.
>>
>>34873232
Numbers matching is more rare but not of significant importance. The level of quality in French arms is very high and interchangeable, unlike some other nations.

Matching isn't the norm, but they are out there for a premium. During WWI it wasn't always a luxury to keep the parts all matching when they were repairing guns back for the front. The later WWII guns are more likely to be found with matching numbers than WWI guns.

I lucked into this all matching 1891 made Mousqueton de Artillerie Modèle 1892 Modifié 1916 that was converted from a Carabine de Cavalerie Modèle 1890 for only $225, but that's far from the norm.
>>
So my mosin has a bit of a rough bolt. If I load all five rounds it has a hard time pushing the round into the chamber, and then opening and closing the bolt can be a real bitch with a round in the chamber. Is there anything I can do to smoothe it out and make it quit that shit?

I suppose I should be asking for reviews on how it functions. Right now, the only pistol i have is a 1911, and even then it's a finicky bitch with mags.
>>
Because the bullet is so far into the case, do you think I would be able to reload hand nugget ammunition, or am I forced to buy new ammo?
>>
>>34874891
I always just smack the back of the bolt to close it if it's being a pain to chamber the first round, usually no problems afterwards.

Ive asked here before but didn't get much of a response. My No1 MKIII Enfield is leaving these sort of melted spots on the brass. Not sure how else to describe them. When I fire the rifle, the bolt does not want to open, and i have to hit it against something to eject the cartridge. Is this a headspacing issue?
>>
>>34875073
it's probably gonna be worse than a 1911, most handguns weren't ahead of their time like the 1911 and had poor ergos and not so great reliability

Hey so what's the deal with spam cans? I really want a mosin but it seems like the only viable way to use as intended (that being shooting cheap ass ammo) is to go with spam cans. Apparently all of them are corrosive.

I really don't want to have to get out all my supplies and take apart my fucking gun every time I shoot it, but I also don't want to buy a shit rifle for the price of something like a mauser when ammo is factored in. Wat do? Skip the mosin altogether, get one and only shoot non corrosive out of it or learn fast cleaning techniques and try not to forget?

The price is that low because it's super hard for britbongs to own it and the costs to import it to the US would probably put it on par with the domestic market.

PPU "8mm Mauser" is loaded to US SAAMI-spec; a 196gr projectile @ ~2200FPS. This is under-powered compared to German 196gr ball which should get 2575fps from a 740mm Gew.98 barrel, and therefore the PPU projectile drops like a stone.

Is your chamber dirty at all? It's a little hard to tell from the picture, but does the base of the case (just above the rim) look stretched? That would be a sign of excessive headspace.

That looks pretty much normal to me. Here are a couple of my cases for comparison (once-fired PPU). I've necksized reloaded some of my cases 3 or 4 times with no issues, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just be sure to check the brass every time you reload for stress or stretching marks. If the case looks slightly uneven, don't worry. Cases fired out of Lee-Enfields are usually asymmetrical because the tapered cartridge sits on the bottom of the generous chamber and fireforms from there.

Is it worth searching for an ishapore over a regular SMLE for a fun slurp gun? I hate ordering guns online but I don't think I'll find an ishapore irl. Meanwhile SMLEs are more common. Worried mostly about ammo costs.

Are the cleaning rods supposed to be loose on these things? It screws in all the way, and won't fall out, but it seems to rattle a bit when I handle the gun.

Just got this one from Gander Mountain a few days ago. $220 said "non-functional" but everything works. However, the decocker requires hulk strength to work, is that normal? Probably just needs a good cleaning in the slide. Early Interarms import from the 80s I'd imagine, since it says West Germany.

Why does this place always seem to jew to the maximum extent on their milsurp? like even stuff that's plentiful is still absorbantly expensive. How much force does your gun require to use the decocker? As I said before mine requires a ton. Mine was made in April '64, when was yours?

I haven't received it yet. The bolt is mismatched from the gun (as to be expected) has a cleaning rod. And seems to have all the standard markings. The mum isn't stamped or ground in any way shape or form. So that's cool.

As far as I know, as long as it was an actual Type 38 taken out of service and given to a school, it should be fine (barring any bolt problems), just don't expect much in the way of accuracy. The slightly undersized trainer rifles you should avoid shooting however, they were not made to fire actual cartridge loads, mostly wooden blanks and such.

Okay, make sure that you are cleaning from the breech or at least using a muzzle protector when you clean it. When the patches come out grey it's okay. Be careful with corrosive ammo! I have a K98 that with a pitted bore because someone didn't properly clean her. Be careful not to let the oil soak into the wood, don't over do the oil anywhere near the stock.

paid a little over 300. Its not refinished (by bubba anyway), its just nearly unissued. It was clearly refurbed by bulgaria (presumably), but looks like it got lost before ww2. Look at how sharp these marks are, the pistol grip isn't even rounded off.

Theres actually cosmoline in this thing. The buttplate has this fucking huge slick of it in the recess. The bolt is sticky from literal being sticky.
