Everything depends on your budget and what you want to do with your guns
>>
>>34836273
I guess $500-$600 for something that can be used for target shooting.
>>

I'm hoping the War Museum let him into their archive, they allegedly have a couple of Huots, among many other things.
>>
>>34836348
Target shooting is still pretty vague. Trap/skeet? Long range precision? IPSC/IDPA? Casual plinking of tin cans?
>>
>>34836348
For that kind of budget unless you get a 22, a very basic bolt action rifle or an SKS you ain't gonna get very far with rifles.
>>
>>34836430
>Huot
Oh god yes.
>>
>>34836438
>>34836442
Ehm... I think I'd prefer long distance precision shooting for a rifle. My dad's telling me to not go top of the line for my first firearm. My very upper limit would be about 1000 if it was something that'd last me.

>>34836460
>long distance precision shooting
>My very upper limit would be about 1000 if it was something that'd last me.
I don't think you realize how expensive this hobby is, especially long range target shooting.

You could get a savage axis or a ruger american or something, but meh
Good optics eat up a fuckton of budget for that as well
>>
>>34836475
>>34836483
Much appreciated. The budget is just to get my feet wet. If I show aptitude in that, I'll start going with the crazy adjustable everything rifles.
>>
>>34836475
Any recommendations for scopes?
>>
>>34836348
I'm going to suggest something off the wall- a Schultz & Larsen M69:

https://www.tradeexcanada.com/produits/109

It's cheap, and you don't have to spring for a scope- the diopter sight will give you a suitable challenge while still being useful.

Yes, they are used, but if you pick one in good condition it should last you a fair while. Ammo isn't cheap, but it's no more expensive than comparable rounds.
>>
>>34836531
Could always get a chink m14. Then buy a scope mount from m14.ca, and a few other parts to make it reliable as fuck.

Surplus ammo is still decently priced for it, and it's non corrosive
>>
>>34836670
Its accuracy is too lackluster for what he intends to do.
I love mine to bits but the better I get at shooting the more it annoys me.
>>
>>34836540
Not really knowledgeable about scopes myself, sorry. Someone will probably chime in, though.

>>
Hey guys, I am going to my PAL/RPAL next month. I have never actually shot a gun before. I have a few idea for the first few guns I want, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them or tell me if I should get something else.

Steel, non railed version of a Jericho 941. Either 9mm or .45, not too sure. Leaning more towards 9mm, but I know the non-rail version is a bit harder to find so I can't be a chooser.

Some kind of AR, which I will probably build. Not sure what to get this in, 5.56? I honestly don't know if that even makes sense.

I'd like to one day get an HK pistol of some sort, maybe a P30L, a USP, or a HK45.

Maybe a glock too

I know people say to get a .22 to start and get used to before moving on, but I don't really want to get a .22 first. I know getting one will just be for fun because of mag caps, but I am not interested in any .22 out there.

The Roosville Incident

The Canadian parliament's enaction of the radical Paulsen Program in 2017 created what some observers described as the largest shift in military capacity seen on the North American continent since the last century. Over the next five years, a gradual strengthening of Canada's borders and its overt military capacity, in the face of economic pressure from its southern neighbor, led to the virtual fortification of the country.

However, the tide of migrants from the United States displaced by economic collapse continued to grow, and these illegal immigrants - nicknamed "snowbacks" - became a major issue for cities along the border.

It was this charged political environment that would lead to a bloody skirmish when, in the winter of 2020, officers of the RCMP used lethal force to deter a horde of American economic refugees from crossing the Montana/British Colombia border near the town of Roosville.

Also gonna slap a cheapo bipod on it and get bag rests from https://truenortharms.com/collections/bipods
The Sniper one looks useful.

Mind you this all for a rookie getting into long range shooting.
Also gonna assume the small gash at the muzzle end there is more or less cosmetic?

I have the same rifle as you, though mine's a lefty because I'm wrong handed. It's impressively accurate with just 150gr FMJ stuff, you bought a winner anon.

Vortex makes good scopes, just make sure you get enough magnification for whatever the longest ranges near you are. I went with 4-16x Millet TRS-1 that my lgs had for a good price and it works well for all my needs, but it's best to visit a store in person and ask to handle a few in your price range to see what you like best. Also make sure you get one with target turrets or you'll go insane trying to adjust things on the fly.

For rings I used Burris XTR tacticals, affordable but solid as anything once you set them up.

That scratch is sort of worrying because of how close it is to the crown, even a tiny gouge on the crown itself can fuck up your accuracy at longer ranges. It seems to be out of the way enough though, should be fine.

One last recommendation: buy a muzzle brake. I got a cheapo $50 one and it took the already modest recoil down to less than SKS levels. It will, however, rattle the teeth of whoever is standing beside it, so keep that in mind.

Happy shooting.
>>
so is it assumed I have the new rule for ATT once I bought a restricted firearm or do I need to wait for the license to come in the mail.
>>
>>34836540
Nikon has good glass for decent price. Similarly priced is vortex. I like vortex reticles better than Nikon and they have a bit better build for their low end scopes but I don't think their glass or the quality of their manufacturing is quite as good (I've seen several with o rings falling out or dust or hairs inside the tube direct from the factory). If you want to go higher leupold has great glass and are some of the lightest scopes out there but you'll pay for it and you won't get extra features like parallax adjustment or higher magnification ranges that you could get for a similar price from Nikon/vortex. They all pretty much have the same warranty (for scopes Nikon and vortex are identical). Stay away from Bushnell unless you like paying more for a worse quality scope and a name that used to be good. General rule of thumb if it's less than ~250 there's a good reason and you should stay away if you want decent quality.
>>
>>34850216

I think it's varied by province so for Alberta i don't think we require the paper copy anymore, the att is attached to every restricted license now
>>
>>34850389

>That scratch is sort of worrying
Fucking Cabela's I tell you. You assume it's people blowing shit out their ass about them well first and last time I'm buying shit there.
I'll shoot them an email see what they say about it kinda boggling how that happend though. The thread cap gives you a 2-3mm clearance from that spot.

Maybe it's just me I got the 20inch barrel version and it feels a little stuby like my SKS did before I dropped it into a ATI monte carlo stock but I do love how much more ergo and damn light it feels to hold the Savage But either way I hear 20 or 24 inches it will be more up to the shooter than the rifle.

Don't think ill be shooting past 1000M starting out so I think up to 10x55 should serve me well plus also like the reticle on the Vortex I'm looking at.

Spend the money on a decent bipod. Harris ones work fairly well and aren't super expensive. As for bag rests, all you need is a rear bag.
If you're planning on shooting long range, I strongly recommend an optic with "tactical" turrets. Using a holdover at 900 yards fucking sucks, trust me. Vortex makes a decent 4-16 with tactical turrets that aren't too expensive.
Also, 10x is a little thin for long range. Think of what a man sized target looks like through irons at 100 - thats what a 1000 yard target will look like at 10x. Doable, but not easy.
>>
>>34850937

>>
>>34836460
My word of advice for long range. Really research what your about to get into. The gear alone to accurately predict environmental and gravitational effects on the bullet can cost upwards of 1500 bucks or more depending on quality.
>>
>>34836460
>>34851285
Not trying to scare you off. Just giving you a realistic idea what this hobby costs.

>tfw spent almost 1000 bucks on reloading equipment
>tfw spent only 500 bucks on peripheral equipment. Still tons more to buy
>tfw only using a savage axis in 7mm-08 with a vortex diamondback tactical until can save money for a custom rifle and a schmidt and bender PM-II
>tfw even with custom ammo harmonized with the rifle, can only get 1MOA groups at 307 yards.

It is what it is i guess. Still super addicted. Also, fixed 10 powers are the way to go. The cost to features on some scopes is amazing compared to the variables
>>

I can't speak for every store in the country, but all of the ones I've been to require you to have your PAL on-hand. Maybe if the guy at the counter is cool they'll ring up your license number and confirm with the CFO, but I've never heard of such a thing happening at a standard retail location.

You can learn fundamentals with something like 223 or pistol calibers, no need to waste money on a glorified BB gun
>>
>>34852489
If you can get a good group with .22lr at 100 yards, you can do it at 3 or 4 times that range with a .308 and appropriate magnification. It's going to be a hell of a lot easier and cost-effective and hell, some people don't have access to really long ranges so limiting the capabilities of your firearm is a good way to compensate. Shooting a .308 at 100 yards won't teach you much.

that was from the classification prototype rifle that the rcmp beat on for 2-3 years. just going by PLA qualification standards, it's definitely capable of doing better than that. shooter could also be fuck awful.

I put my money down after I saw this anyways.

There are likely mods that you can do to it to improve accuracy, as well. M305's aren't match rifles out of the box, either.

>>34852980
minute-of-man accuracy isn't the end of the world, but it's slightly disappointing for a $1000 rifle. it's still unique and cool enough for me not to care. plus these factors >>34852666
