I imagine there's a pretty strong community of Preppers on this board, so as an aspiring prepper I wanted to start this thread if anyone has any questions about prepping.

I'm in college in Texas and i was wondering how you guys are approaching the question of water? Me, my brother, my mom, and my dad go through like 2-3 24 packs of water bottles every week so we consume a lot of water amongst ourselves and that's not even getting into the amount we need for showering. Should I try developing a well on my property? Should I buy water filters? Is buying a massive number of water packs the only way for me to prep for water shortages? Thanks.

Normie fuck off. This will sound edgy but anybody with a brain would know that trying to survive the fall of civilization would be a waste of time and life. Sure, you could fulfill your wetdreams but in the long run it will be tedious and shitty and not worth it.
>>
>>34700885

This. I'd at least fuck around for a bit.
>>
>>34700759
>need for showering
If SHTF and you need to conserve it, you'll be washing out of a bucket, not showering.

>Is buying a massive number of water packs the only way for me to prep for water shortages?
You've honestly never heard of rainwater tanks?
>>
>>34700912
This. Imagine thinking offing yourself would be a good idea right at the start of the best happening of all time. Gotta see how long you can survive. We are living in a simulation anyway...

Factor for 1 gallon per person per day. That's just for drinking. Showering becomes a wipedown with a wet sponge.

You also want to become knowledgeable on improv solar water distilling. Once you get a handle on that, you can glean potable water from plant matter, offal, or sewage. That's desperation mode, though.

Learn how to strain, filter, and purify water from standing and running sources. Learn some basic water quality tests, put together a rudimentary test kit.

Plan on keeping a month worth of potable water on hand for each family member. Cases of half liter bottles works well. Just buy one more case than you use every time you buy water. Set up a rotation, using up the oldest first. A standard case of 24 bottles would equal roughly a 3 day supply for 1 person. One of those 40 bottle cases from Costco is about a 5 day supply for 1 person.

A 30 day stash isn't a long term solution, it just buys you time to ride out a short term shtf event or evaluate your options in a long term scenario.

lolwut?

That's about twice as much as people need to drink.
>>

As someone mentioned, rainwater tanks. I believe in TX we even get a tax break or something for collecting rainwater.
>>

In Texas quite easily you need that especially if the power goes out dehydration is going to be one of the biggest killers especially if you're sick, if you're thirsty you're already dehydrated.

>Implying battling through the apocalypse wouldn't be 100x more meaningful and satisfying than modern life.
>>
>>34701590
...Did you even read your own source?

It basically says the same thing I've been saying.
>>
>>34701581

Hot weather + diarrhea is enough, add physical activity and half a gallon is not enough.

Also, if in your imaginary universe nobody does anything but sit and wait, they might as well have that extra water because is ever going to sweat to move it or any other things, huh?
>>
>>34701593
So, we're now digging trenches in the desert heat while shitting our pants? Is that what the average SHTF scenario looks like to you?

A day of collecting firewood, boiling water, walking around setting and checking traps, in that scenario, half a gallon of water is fine. Or any variation of a scenario that basically involves meandering and picking things up off the ground.
>>
>>34701592
You haven't said anything just said that people are drinking too much water.
>>
>>34701608
I said about half a gallon is fine in my original post. >>34701468

I also said that even while doing stuff, a gallon is way too much. >>34701561

I've also indicated that digging trenches in the desert is probably unlikely. >>34701602

From your source:
>Generally, if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or light yellow — and measures about 6.3 cups (1.5 liters) or more a day if you were to keep track — your fluid intake is probably adequate.

Also, this matches up pretty well:
>An extra 1.5 to 2.5 cups (400 to 600 milliliters) of water should suffice for short bouts of exercise, but intense exercise lasting more than an hour (for example, running a marathon) requires more fluid intake.
to what I said here >>34701561
>If you simply drink a cup of water when you're thirsty or you feel you need it, you'll be fine,

So unless you're planning on running a post-apocalyptic marathon, which I guess is possible if you're planning on zombies but otherwise unlikely, yeah about half a gallon is fine.

How important are gas masks to the average prepper?

And do preppers use camouflage uniforms or do they just use standard clothing?
>>
>>34702131
Technically yes, probably no. But mice and bugs can get into it.

The problem with mice is they shit where they eat, so you'll end up with a half eaten, poop-riddled packet of pasta.

Bugs aren't such a big deal, but I'd be a bit wary of eating stuff that has mice shit in it. Plus, at least in my experience, when you're boiling it, the bugs will rise to the top of the water and you can skim them off.
>>
>>34702236
Was just thinking about it because they all have a best before date, but I dont see how they could go bad. Mice etc of course, but I store them in their original package inside of some ait tight containers on a pallet so its not on the ground.
>>
>>34702247
'Best before' = freshest before, but generally okay after.
'Use by' = eat by, potentially dangerous or just plain icky after.

Where are you? Are you on the Edwards Aquifer? Surface Water? Rain only? More info please. A lot of Texas is arid. And there are times when most of Texas gets terrible conditions. That's why they devoted so much effort to artificial lakes in the 50s. You need to make sure you have some form of long term supply.

Yes, but it is more likely something will eat it, like worms or mice.

If you freeze it for 72 hours to kill any larva that may have made it into the packaging (not likely with most brands, but always possible).
Then buy 6 gallon mylar bags with oxygen absorbers and a 5 gallon bucket.
Put 25lbs of rice in the mylar bag with the oxygen absorber and use a iron to heat the mylar bag so that it seals.
Put the bag in the 5 gallon bucket (feel free to do this before you heat/seal the bag).
Close the bucket.
Do the same for beans.

You now have about three months of food that will literally never go bad.

You just figuring this out? This was making the rounds in 2013, when I first found /k/. If you did any more digging you would have found all of the threads on Zombie Squad and some of the other prepper forums that raged about the provenance of Selco for months on end. Keep in mind, he's a salesman with a product to sell. Telling a compelling story is part of his pitch. Some anon dug up a link to the mission logs for Operation Provide Promise, showing that it was very unlikely that US supply drops were happening when and where Selco claimed. The consensus was, he fused stories from 3 or 4 people into a composite and claimed it for his own.

For good reason. Either one works, I've got an Arsenal SAM7R that's loaded with soft points and a Daniel Defense M4V1 that's loaded with 75gr Hornady TAP. Both rifles have been in the field and run phenomenally, but the AR gets my vote for a primary weapon system. The AKs are put back in reserve as spares.

What about helmets? Do you think a helmet is something one should consider adding to their bug out inventory?

I'm not talking necessarily full on ballistic military grade kevlar swat shit, but like something primarily for bump protection i.e. protection from falling objects, shit thrown at you with malicious intent, blunt objects swing at ones head.

Do you think something like a skate helmet or hockey helmet with ear protection is a good idea? or does it say I'm looking for a fight. Attack me.
>>
>>34712439
I bought a helmet because I just joined a group that will occasionally participate in rallies or demonstrations that are attended by violent marxists, a baseball helmet to be specific. If you're going to be going TOWARDS a fight, it's necessary. But if the world ends you're probably going to be hiding or running away (bugging in/out).
>>
>>34712439
If you're going to primarily lay low, I could see a bump helmet like Ops Core, MTek or Protec be useful, particularly if you're going to mount NODs on it. Much more comfortable than a skullcrusher. Other than that, I'd just wear a boonie during the day and have the helmet strapped to the pack or beside the rifle at night.
>>
>>34712439
Eh I just go with boonie in the summer, german army winter cap in the winter. Maybe ushanka if it's like below 15 and there's wind.

Not all wells, at least in rural areas. I have a 1500ft deep well that is free flowing and my neighbor a quarter mile away has a pair of wells that flow freely. However our 80ft well for watering plants needs an electric pump and the 100 year old open pit well has a hand pump attached to it.
Your best bet in a SHTF situation is to either have a free flowing well beforehand or one that you can use a standard hand pump on. Remember to test your water once in a while so you don't use a shallow well filled with all natural weird shit.

This guy is on to something. Aloe will be worth its weight in gold in SHTF.
>>
>>34712877
Aloe is a great plant to have growing no matter what. I have a decent garden, and I think my aloe is the plant I get the most use out of. I also grow peppers, pineapples, strawberries( they did not produce much this year, but next year I am hopeful). I also have 2 mango trees in my backyard that produce thousands of mangos each.
>>
>>34713004
>I also have 2 mango trees in my backyard
I had a place with a shitload of fruit trees in the back. I lived off of smoothies from january till april every year.

the banana tree was my nigga though. the ones in the store taste like dirt compared to real, ripened on the tree bananas.
>>
>>34713004
What type of climate do you live in? I'd like to grow aloe, but I feel like it gets too cold in the winter here in North Texas
>>
>>34713045
I live on the southeast coast of Florida. Basically anything I plant grows phenomenally. Except potatoes

>>34713004
I have so much fruit I can't even give it all away
>>
>>34713076
did you try growing them in a potato box, or the tires, and not in the ground?
>>
>>34713136
No I didn't try that. I know what your talking about, but after talking to some guys down here, I'm just going to give up on potatoes. Which sucks because they are my favorite thing that grows
>>
>>34713193
the box is perfect for florida though. you will have shitloads of them with one.
>>
>>34713634
What makes the box different from growing in the ground? I only vaguely remember the potato box infographic
>>
>>34713660
it drains. florida stays damp as fuck most of the time, and the tatties rot. the box is lifted up above the ground, lets it drain, plus you get to shift the plants around to have a constant stream of potatoes at whatever size you want them.
>>
>>34713679
Cool. Do you have the infographic?

What is the best forum for preppers at the moment anyway?

Pretty easy to figure out what shooting forums have a high signal:noise ratio, but I get on readiness/prepping/survival boards and I can't shake the feeling that everyone is deluding themselves and knows fuckall.

Including ZS (was a poster there for a long time and gave up).
>>
>>34713815
glad to help a fellow member of the florida masterrace out.

this also works great if you can get some well composted cowshit, the kind that looks like soft black dirt, and composed fishguts to grow it in. I had a connect once that would grow shittons of dope out in the middle of nowhere, that would have dumptruck loads of blackdirt from compost, that he couldnt even use. i paid for the fuel, and we basically added 6 inches of dirt to my fruit trees in the back yard, and my neighbors yard. him and his wife were russkies and old, they made us Kompot with their fruit from the yard the next year.

How about you stop wasting everyone's time right now and kill yourself?
>>

How do I make /k/ friends rl after the apocalypse? I imagine you niggers would shoot first ask questions later, we need a signal
>>
>>34713979
You don't make freinds after the apocalypse. You make them before apocalypse.

Which is actually pretty fucking essential for survival. All those wannabe lone wolfs are going to die pretty quickly. No matter how many fancy toys and you buy, being alone is a crippling disadvantage.

>If you think he read threads on ZombieSquad forums and came up with that you're an idiot.

Re-read my post. I was passing along what I'd picked up elsewhere. Granted, in the interest of brevity I was a little more cryptic than I should have been.

To amplify on my earlier post: Selco is most likely a genuine Bosnian. He probably did see some shit in Bosnia. The general opinion that I saw was that he had combined his experiences with the experiences of other Bosnians to make a composite that he claimed as his own. He didn't browse forums and make it up, he probably listened to stories in a refugee camp.

Significant effort has gone into debunking his claims. Besides the whole issue with the USAF supply drops, it was pointed out that parts of his story play a little too conveniently into the confirmation bias of the markets where it was originally circulated. This was passed of as being the result of being translated (iirc) into Russian, then French, then English.

It was interesting when I first read it, I lost interest after I saw how much autism the guy stirs up. There's no middle of the road- he's either the Antichrist or he's the savior of modern civilization, depending on who you talk to.
>>
>>34711110
you wouldn't have to grind them.

>>
>>34711483
Any modern rifle will be good enough. Just use a common caliber so you can trade ammo. Semi-auto AR-15 or AR-10 is probably the best choice for USA.
>>
>>34714234
>, or set a broken arm on themselves.
More doable than you think. Setup the splint and then hook your wrist on something and pull for traction then secure the splint.

Personally I've set my own boxer fractures (metacarprals/bones in your palm).

Not sure where the fuck you live, mate, but here in Southern British Columbia it's 40C in the summer time. Just walking a couple of kilometers in jeans and a t-shirt is enough to make your jeans damp from sweating. It's also humid as fuck here, so even sitting in the shade only offers a small comfort to otherwise blistering sunshine. Add a 40lb ruck and a rifle to that, you're going to be sweating your dick off. I used to be buggy bitch at a grocery store, and I'd go through a half gallon in a 6 hour shift and another half a gallon for the rest of the day.

What do you plan on doing. Sitting on a 12in dragon dildo in a climate controlled bunker, eating fucking cheetos all day?

You Can shower with minimal water via the following:
Bucket, shower curtain going into said bucket, battery/usb powered shower pump shooting into the bucket, coffee filters/filters over the water pump, inline water filter right before the shower head.
Bonus for small water heater added to bucket(12 volt thing works, using half a barrel above a small flame works as well)

>>34701602
that gallon of water a day ISN'T just for drinking,
that water is also for cleaning yourself and your food/clothes/hands/etc, processing your shit/piss, and having extra for when you are sick or expiring more during intense heat/work.

A small 4'5" man will drink less than a 7'8" 200lbs overweight man in the desert sun hiking with a 70lb bag. The gallon is just a average amount, because when disaster hits most people just remember the easy and fast to quote stuff.
