You can buy them like any other rifle but they are neutered because of California laws

They are super sweet shooting rifles, especially when you get the longer gas systems.

Finding an AR to buy in CA is super easy, the problem is deciding how you want to configure the rifle.
As you probably know, we've been subject to a whole slew of retardation with these new laws.
Since you would be buying an AR this year, you wouldn't have the option to register a bullet button AR, so really you can only have it featureless unless you tell the CA DOJ to go fuck themselves.

AR's are pretty reliable. I've shot 1250 rounds through my 6920 using 2006-2011 era South African M193 ball and I have yet to have a malfunction.

If you're buying something like a ruger, s&w, colt, Daniel defense, etc etc you're gonna have awesome reliability.
Recoil is pretty minimal, especially when you have an AR that's on the heavy side.

Typically an AR shoots 223/556, and that's what you will see most of in CA.

You could shoot an ar as fast as you can and hold the muzzle pretty flat no issue

An AR is pretty easy to clean.

Depends on budget, under $1,000 you want to look at colt, s&w, and ruger. Above that budget you should expect to see Daniel defense rifles, they are popular.

If you're gonna shoot causal then s&w / colt / ruger is perfectly fine.

What do you mean by this? All of the internal rails are steel, you pin them in after making the gun. The light rail is polymer but its polymer on a real glock too.

The causal shooter will not experience any difference that is relevant. A DD rifle is gonna have things like a nicer barrel, better furniture, etc etc.

The other thing to consider is you can start with a $600 base rifle and gradually upgrade to a very high quality rifle. Every part on an AR has a huge aftermarket and you can literally build them in your garage with a few tools, if you find that's what you want.
