Not even close, life was pretty good 10yrs ago and i was making good money for being 15yo.
When i was 18, i started airsofting and made a bunch of friends.
We always had fun parties and went to plenty of out-of-state events.
Life was good, money was there, i was happy.

The economy was on the way down but it didn't hit hard until about 2011.

Unrelated to the economy, i lost all my friends and life started to suck. I tried to maintain a bit of the lifestyle i had and that's where the debt came in.
