pick whichever reticle/ turret options you want.

i recommend target turrets (in moa) if possible on the mark ar, and fine duplex crosshair. you arent going to need mil dots

Honestly, for the money, the Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x is hard to beat. Extremely lightweight as well. Only thing I hate about them is the push button function they opted to go with on the firedot reticle. Since you're not not likely to be beating the shit out of it, the exposed turrets aren't a big issue wither.

Good, clean glass in the $500-$600 range though.

My .02 is that for everything that's not precision focused or being used in a full auto fashion, lightweight profile is king. The BCM enhanced lightweights are real nice.

Trade off is they heat up faster and if you are dumping mag after mag in short order, your groups may start to open up a little (nothin catastrophic). Bonus being they really do shave a noticeable amount of weight off the package and they cool down faster.

If precision is your goal, you'll probably want to look at stainless, BCM's SS410 is good stuff, the mk12 I bought from them was sub-moa capable all day. Trade off is they are heavy and SS wears faster.

The extra velocity of the 2 or so inches is worth the weight tradeoff in my opinion. The extra 2 inches also doesn't hurt too bad in cqb. Makes for a better bench gun and a better shtf gun.

All gas systems work with all lengths, but people say longer=less recoil and more reliability. Short barrels won't fit long gas systems. If you go 16 or 18 inch go mid length gas system

On an 18" you will likely be looking at rifle length gas. On 16" mid-length. On 14.5" carbine or mid-length.

Mid-length on 16" and 14.5" just increases the length of travel and results in less recoil impulse and less pressure being put on related components. Most companies have made it entirely reliable on both length barrels at this point when using something like an H2 buffer.

I definitely recommend going that route if you pick up a 16" or 14.5". Carbine on either is still plenty functional though.

Compared to the 3-9x, you'd be looking at (on the cheap side) Weaver Kaspa Tactical 2-5-10x50 (also a x32 model that's been discontinued but is widely available still), Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10x, Steiner GS3 2-10x, Burris XTR2 2-10x, and others.

Generally functional, generally shit QC. I've had 2 uppers from them in the past, one premium and one freedom...both came with canted FSPs and a few other minor issues. Hard to beat for the money though as you're not going to get much better in that price range.
