Are there any AKs that don't have a shit finish? Both my wasr and vepr have dogshit finishes. Maybe I am just spoiled by the standard AR-15 finishes that kick ass.

Did Egyptian AKs see much export (for actual military/paramilitary/legitimate arming people to use for combat, not commercial export), or were they primarily kept within Egypt's armed forces?

Coming from a guy in Minnesota, where we attack winter with good ol' rock salt, this is not as much of a concern as it used to be. My work had two pic related tacomas and they were not showing signs of significant rust when they hit 90,000 miles.

Beastin' little pickups to survive MN winters with only 2wd.

Century WASR 10 rifles aren't bad. They are commonly recommended here as first AK rifles. Most of the Century hate comes from the rifles they build (RAS47, C39, ect.), while the WASR is a rifle that they import from Romania. Earlier imports had problems with canted sights and mag wobble, the newer imports seem to have ironed out these problems.
I own one from 2014 and it has none of those problems, have over 1k rounds through it with only one failure due to a bent up mag.
>>
>>32104757
Awesome, didn't know that. Thank you.

What should I look for when purchasing a WASR then? Manufacturing defects and the like or should it be great out of the box?
>>
>>32104106
I have the new VEPR pre-converted ak. Maybe yours has a different finish.
>>
>>32104831
The AK snobs with fancy youtube channels and sell classes and whatnot still consider the WASR the best AK before you start spending about twice what the WASR cost.
>>
>>32104831
AK operators union has a video about picking an AKM. I wouldnt be too autistic but check for canted sights, check rivets, and make sure a variety of mags fit if possible.

The grenade just won't go as far.

Real GL blanks might cause an issue as they're quite a bit stronger than "parade" blanks, but you're probably not going to run across any of them since they're basically collectibles.

Not an AKfag but it depends on your preferences. I think all Veprs have milled receivers, and I think many of the Vepr sporters come set up in a sporting configuration. I can say the WASR definitely isnt a piece of shit, though I'd be wary of anything built by century. The WASR is imported by them though, not built. My friend has one and he loves it.
>>
>>32106306
I've never seen a vepr with a milled receiver.

Zero Veprs have milled receivers, Molot doesn't do milled AKs.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm only posting these because I realized I managed to accidentally put together a clone of the Iraqi Army's "AR-M1" service rifle, with the exception of my RPK-style muzzle brake (it came with a plain barrel nut).
It's one of DDI's kit builds from Bulgarian parts. Also note that the Iraqi rifles (with the exception of the second pic) even use 45-degree gas blocks and AK47-style FSB. This is inconsistent with Arsenal's current "AR-M1" offering.
I'm pretty sure some of DDI's builds, including mine, were from leftover parts from Arsenal's Iraq contract.

Anyone know which mags were produced by the Circle 11 plant (Poland), and when? Any info I come across pretty much discusses Izmash, Tula, and maybe Circle 10, but I'm wondering if there were other Polish mags besides steel. I obviously don't mean the new polymer "Circle 11" V-project mags.

So a while back I decided to let my inner poorfag out and ordered a knockoff RS regulate mount for $80 for both the upper and lower pieces. It arrived ages ago but I was running my TWS dog leg already.

Completely forgot that I bought the thing until today when I found it in my parts crate.

I mounted it, did some minor adjustments and viola! Its solid, centered, and way more professional looking than I could have imagined.

There are no signs of poor craftsmanship or any casting lines. If any of you fellow poorfags are interested, I'll post the link below.

Saturday I'll be shooting with it and testing it out, will report back when done.

My apologies then m8. But you cannot go wrong with a new production WASR. It's the best bang for your buck at the moment. I love mine and doubt I'll ever sell it. Next step from a WASR would be a VEPR and after that maybe an SLR. Beyond that you have "custom" rifles like Rifle Dynamics, Difinitive Arms, ect. Great rifles but 4 times your current budget.

Quite literally, the Nikonov fires two rounds just 33 milliseconds apart. Your eye blinks in 150 milliseconds. So you can imagine that an attempt to break down this mechanical function; so compressed in time can be a tedious task. So bear with us, we shall now expound on the internal function step by step, starting from a closed, loaded chamber, with the selector set to burst mode.

The trigger is pulled, and through a series of linkages (which will be explained later), lets the slidinghammerloose. The sliding hammertravels down its guide rails in the receiver to strike thefiring pin, at the rear of the locked bolt. The slidinghammeris allowed to shift sideways in its rails, and lock into place, becoming a fixed part of thecarrierassembly. The cartridge is ignited, projectile begins moving, and rearward recoil begins acting on the entire locked receiver. This recoil energy overcomes the receiver’s inertia, and the receiver begins to travel rearward, at a comparatively slow rate. As the bullet passes the gas port, energy acts on the piston, just above the barrel. The relatively lightweight piston andcarrier assemblyis forced rearward, unlocking the bolt from the breech. As the bolt travels to the rear, it acts on thecable and pulley, which activate the cartridge shuttle. The shuttle travels forward to strip a fresh cartridge from themagazine and presents that new cartridge into the cartridge carrier, just ahead of and above themagazine. The spent case has ejected; the bolt and carrier begin their return to battery; the barrel and receiver are still traveling rearward.
>>
>As the bolt travels forward to meet the barrel, and the barrel travels aft to meet the bolt, the cartridge carrier raises and presents the round between the barrel and bolt. When the bolt and barrel meet and lock with a fresh cartridge chambered, thehammer, still fixed to the carrier, ignites the cartridge immediately upon locking. A second recoil impulse transfers more recoil energy to the reciprocating receiver. The receiver finally reaches its rearmost position within the envelope. As the bolt completes the second ejection cycle, and reaches its rearmost position within the receiver, it delivers a rearward blow to the receiver, delaying its return forward, but allowing enough time for the cartridge carrier to present another fresh round. The bolt, carrier and barrel can now return to forwardbattery, with a live round chambered, ready for the next burst. And the shooter has only felt a single recoil impulse – seemingly the result of only the second shot fired. The end result on target is two very closely placed shots. In the full automatic setting, the first two rounds always fire at the burst rate of 1,800 rpm, and continued fire resumes at the normal rate of 600rpm. As the user fires in full-automatic, the slidinghammerdoes not travel with the carrier; it is only released at the moment that the bolt and receiver return to forwardbattery. Semi-and full-auto modes of fire utilize the reciprocating sub-receiver to attenuate recoil and improve accuracy and time of follow-up shots. The burst function makes use of the extended time interval during the receiver’s rearward travel.

I never realized jamming the next round most of the way forward into the chamber while extracting the case from the previous round would increase ROF.

Less resistance to the bolt slamming home not having to strip it out of the magazine? Or purely the distance it has to move the extra mass of the cartridge?

There isn't really that much room between magazine and chamber on AKs anyway...

The real magic is how the fucking thing fires while the barrel and bolt locked together again are still both recoiling.

>>
>>32111789

No. There may be a hogue set that you can modify but they are probably rubberized. Mako makes a god-ugly set with rails and slots everywhere.
>>
>>32111851
Yes, it is too bad. But as we all know, shotgun magazine plugs are a thing if you need to reduce your magazine capacity for hunting.
>>
>>32111918
Eh, I mainly only use shotguns for turkey hunting and clays (which is my favorite game by a large margin). Not much point to a saiga for me. Seems the main reason to get one is a larger capacity with a detectable magazine. I guess it might be fun to shoot clays with, but you only need two shots for skeet and one shot for trap. Ranges are really strict about only loading 2 for skeet or 1 for trap in your gun at once. I wonder how theyd react to that. It would be a bitch to have to detact, load the magazine, and react inbetween in shot, especially when I can easily go through 200 rounds in a day at the range. But there is no way they are going to let people move around the range with a loaded and chambered gun.

I would like to use 5.45x39 for cheap ammo and glorious steel core.

However, problems that I'm facing are
>no folding stocks with comfy cheekwelds
>right side charging handle, who the fuck designed that?
>""""uncomfortable""" controls/ergonomics
>questionable accuracy

"redpill" me on the AK platform, /k/
do these problems need to be fixed, or do they not even exist at all?
are there custom parts that fix these problems?
and in the end, how much will it end up costing me?
>>
>>32117261
GUN IS DESIGNED FOR EVRYONE!!! NO NEED TO FIX!!! ONLY CHILD OF WESTERN TRY TO FIX GLORIOUS RIFLE!!!

seriously though. the gun was designed for conscripts. if you're used to AR's then you have to relearn how to shoot with an AK. The "manual of arms" has literally no similarities.

personal feelings is that people who are well into the whole boutique AR thing try to do the same with AK's and then start complaining that it's, essentially, not an AR.

Also, accuracy is pretty good. 5.45 rifles can shoot pretty damn well out to 400m and beyond. x39's can shoot pretty accurately to 300m.

I will admit the pistol is WAY to skinny. and I;ve changed them out immediately. As for folding stocks, get a Arsenal with a solid folder.

>>
>>32117261
Right handed people are best suited with guns that eject to the right side. It was simplest to put the charging handle in the same cutout as the ejection port. It was also designed decades before the Chris Costa/Haley "NEVER EVER REMOVE YOUR HAND FROM THE PISTOL GRIP.. RELOAD THE GUN IN YOUR WORKSPACE.. TAP RACK BANG.. RELOAD WITH YOUR SUPPORT HAND" mantra. Just take your right hand off the pistol grip and charge the gun.
>>
>>32117511
They put the charging handle on the right to make it easier to train conscripts from bolt action Mosin's to AK's. Doctrine at the time (and for quite a longtime at that) was to charge the gun with you right hand. Same with mag changes.
>>
>>32117388
i'm noguns so no relearning

let's say that the magwell and controls are right where they need to be and I can go through normal operation without fumbling or reaching, it doesn't add on any additional 3gun time, i'm not at a disadvantage to an attacker with an AR, etc

would buying an cheapshit ak and putting a new stock and a new barrel in it be satisfactory and less costly than shelling out for an Arsenal ak74?
or do you basically have to spend $1200-2000 on an AK out of the factory to receive quality, accuracy, and reliability?
>>
>>32117511
You can always tilt the gun left and charge it with your support hand. Pretty sure that's how Haley runs his.
>>
>>32104262
>tfw no front locker
>>
>>32117579
Those acrobatics are completely unnecessary when your right hand works just as well. And if you're using an optic it complicates things. So you can go under, but that's even more awkward.

>>32117576
Not every gun has to be the most high-speed low-drag gun ever designed. It's okay to buy a gun just because you like that particular gun. Also it's no simple task to change barrels on an AK, put that thought well out of your mind.
>>
>>32117628
Why do i need a front locker ?
Its got the rear.
>>
>>32117576
technically it does add a little. the saftey is supposed to be actuated by your right hand. again, doctrine was to move the selector off of safe when you went on patrol and not to touch it until either you needed F/A or you returned from patrol.

unless you have freakishly long, and strong, fingers, it'll add to your time.
>>
>>32117641

Well I mean, I didn't intend for you to take it that far. It's not ALL about enjoying shooting. My Glock 43 isn't the most enjoyable gun to shoot but I bought it because it's easy to carry and reliable. It all depends on what you're buying the gun for.

>>
>>32117996
just guessing? drum magazines are expensive to manufacture, in the sense that they are labor-intensive and contain many moving parts requiring fitting, etc., and I will guess further that they decided 40-45 round mags for the RPKs were sufficient.
>>
>>32117996
The same reason they got away from them when they ditched the DP28. along with everyone else who used drums.

They're bulky, heavy, and complex. you can carry several drums, are for the same weight, you can carry more ammo and not have you mag pouches get snagged everywhere.

Also, to complex for conscripts. Same reason the U.S. didn't formally adopt drums from the Thompson. Too many moving parts.

So, a buddy of mine has a bunch of Circle 10 Ak74 parts that he is willing to sell me(pretty cheap. Pretty sure they're not #'s matching though). It's mainly all the important stuff. Only things I'd have to get is furniture, barrel, and FCG.

So here's my question. Who should I go for, for a receiver? BTW, he has everything to build an AK minus the flat bending jig and a kiln.

I've always wanted an old triangle side folder, but price for the stock alone is kinda salty for me. Think I might do a Polish tantal style side folder.

>>
>>32118702
You want to do it right down the finest detail but are willing to wait 2 years? 74u LLC.

Just want a gun with an excellent quality receiver that might not be quite as detail-correct? Childers Guns.

Triangle side-folders aren't that expensive but you'll want a ribbed buttplate with the "rolled" support struts for it to be accurate for a Bulgarian build. You can either get a 4.5mm folding trunnion and stock from K-VAR when you get your barrel or check AK Builder for the Taiwanese-made clone in the same pattern.

Be aware that if you're following 922r compliance, you will need one more compliance part in addition to the US-made receiver and FCG.

No prob, I wanted to make an Afghan War-style AKS-74 and nearly did it on a Bulgarian kit, but ended up going Russian instead.

Also, I misspoke, you will need *two* more US compliance parts for 922r. In your case it will probably be the barrel and the gas piston, but you can also replace the pistol grip (easy to get an authentic-looking US-made one for a Bulgy build), muzzle device, or magazine follower or floorplate.
>>
>>32119216
>People STILL think 922r matters
It doesn't.
>>
>>32119274
Like I said, if he wants to follow it, that's what he'll need. No harm in giving info. I'm having an FFL build my rifle so I had to make sure he had compliance parts first.

Not trying to be That Guy, and hoping to keep everything civil here.

But yeah, an extractor failing at 500 rounds is not a good sign and there's no way to spin that.

It was, of course, a sample size of one. Maybe a batch of extractors got incorrect heat treatment or something. I have no way of knowing.

This kind of thing is why manufacturers submit multiple firearms--dozens, hundreds--for testing for government contracts and nothing is based on a sample size of one. A bigger sample size would tell us more. And I know, Rob Ski is only one guy.

With the extractor replaced, AKOU is continuing to test the same rifle and is past the 1000 round mark on the new extractor, 1500+ on all other components, and the gun is still running and the new extractor is showing no signs of problems yet.

I do notice, and it's visible in the videos on Youtube, that it looks like in the DDI rifle the bolt carrier is smacking the front trunnion and peening both parts. Is it normal for those parts even to come into contact? I have a WASR (in b4 "lol poorfag") and while I don't have 1500 rounds through it yet, I will say those parts aren't peening in mine and don't appear to be coming into contact at all when the rifle cycles.

Well I can here no Prob, these new Polytech AKs are very shit in Quality, the Hammer breaks after 100rds and de Finish is very bad. >Is there any 5.45 ammo that's not steel core?

None of the commercial is steel core. But most of it has copper-washed mild steel jackets, so if they're testing everything with a magnet, they're not going to accept it.
>>
>>32122512
Some AKs are smoother than others. Even rough ones will smooth up after a few hundred rounds, especially if you lubricate them properly--lithium grease will help the parts lap together.
>>
>>32123044
Kinda hoping I don't get the bubble finish. It's not really that big of a deal but it's sad that rustoleum holds up better.

Hey /akg/, I just got jewed at a gun show. I bought two steel AK mags for $10 each and the guy claimed they were new manufacture from Eastern Europe, just got home and found a "Made in Korea" stamp on em. How much did I get jewed? I heard that Korean AK mags are dubious quality, are they gonna fail on me, what should I look out for?
>>
>>32124050
They're poor quality.

They may or may not fit your gun. If they need fitting, remember to file on the cheap stuff (the mags) and not the expensive stuff (the gun).

If they will fit in your gun, a lot of these mags have the little dimples on the insides of the feed lips a bit too low. Those dimples are supposed to keep the magazine follower from rising too far and jamming between the feed lips at the top. But in some of the Korean mags the follower can't rise far enough to put proper spring pressure on the last 1-2 rounds in the mag so those don't always feed correctly. The bolt cycles and the top round doesn't always rise into position to be picked up and chambered, etc. You can fix this with a Dremel. Just don't cut off too much material.

It's an awful lot of work to fix a $10 mag but you asked.

First try the mags in your gun to see if they work. Sometimes they do--though they may not last as long. The springs aren't very good. And if you pick up one of these mags and heft it and then pick up the real thing, you will also notice the Koreans are using very thin metal compared to the Warsaw Pact stuff.

It still may be usable as a range mag and if you can get it in the gun and if you can get it to where the follower rises high enough, it can be a decent range mag and still better than a Pro-Mag. But by all means see if it fits, first, and correct that if possible, then take it to a range and try it out.
>>
>>32124050
Granted they are shitty quality, but that's close to what people are asking online, so you didn't loose out to bad. You can tell if they're decent mags by the thickness of the metal, Korea mags are about as thin as a tin can.

Anyone here can weight how a civilian Chinese Type-81 might turn out? Or hell even how the Chinese military Type-81 holds up as AK style patterned rifle?

As of right now they are ghost rifles none have hit the market yet so no one knows fuck all and we got is hearsay from the importer.

$999.99 MSRP then if looking to throw in spare mags would bring the total package up somewhere under $1300 Canadian fun bucks after taxes. wondering if its worth it to take a pre order now or wait and see if others get it in for cheaper? or worse case miss the boat and pay more
