That's one of the norinco AKs illegally modified by Larry Philips and Emil matasareanu.

The grip isn't Chinese. I believe it was made by global industries out of Texas.

It's also said that they had to use eastern European AK bolt carriers because the Chinese ones didn't have the cut out for the auto sear.

Very interesting site about those two: http://www.northhollywoodshootout.com/home.html

I wish the guys in charge would complete the site

>From our current research, and we will happily stand to be corrected, the majority of Chinese bolt carriers came in an unfinished base metal color. There was an exception to this in the form of bolts from the Min Shan factory that had been blued. However the bolt carrier pictured above shows a step mark in the profile that Min Shan bolts do not appear to have (from the very limited amount of pictures we have been able to source of them).
The above bolt carrier appears to be a Eastern European offering, but that in itself raises other questions as headspacing issues occur when trying to mate bolt groups from this region to Chinese receivers. It is a curious oddity that so far we are unable to explain.

I've always seen the odd finger-grooved reverse dong advertised as Chinese, and it almost exclusively is seen on chink type 56-1's.

First one of the current batch they tested crapped out due to a bad extractor, and the rules are: if it breaks in a way that can't be fixed with duct tape or 550 cord, it fails.

AKOU appears to be restarting the test with a new extractor, though, so maybe we'll see.

I have heard the claim that brakes with the zigzag cuts offer superior flash suppression to those without.

I cannot find a video or documentation better than my possibly faulty memory on this, so maybe take this with a grain of salt, but I was under the impression that the original '74 brake was a real flamethrower, as bad as a bare muzzle and also prone to making this very distinctive V-shaped flash signature as viewed from downrange, and the zigzag cuts reduce that greatly.

Are you fucking retarded, or are you just a bench bitch who packs up the second it starts to rain and shouldn't be using an AK in the first place? Finish is essential to the lifespan of the gun.

>>32070766
Don't buy it. The stocks are only meant for weapons with an optic and if you don't have one you're going to have to mash your face into the stock to try and get the slightest semblance of a sight picture. Also, the handguards don't have a standoff from the retaining bracket so if you heat up the rifle to any degree the handguard is guaranteed to melt into the bracket, making it impossible to remove without breaking one of the two in the process.

The ranges I shoot at are out in the open so I can't get good lighting for good pictures. Why bother taking the time to set up for pictures if the result is going to be shit? Makes no sense to me. Just shoot the rifle and take it somewhere that you can get a good photo; such as in the back yard or in the garage when cleaning it.

Here's a still from the FL /k/ shoot where I bumpfired it, but that's about all you're going to get for a photo of me shooting it.

When I say ranges I don't mean traditional ranges, I mean the ranges my buddies have set up on their properties. I've got a few buddies that each have a few hundred acres so they've cleared anywhere from 500-1500m of brush and put steel targets out at the end to create ranges that are better than most of the places you can pay for.

Also outside of private property hiking with a firearm is out of the question. Open carry in Florida was stymied by some Spic kike who only recently got kicked out of the government; he wiped it off the ballot alongside cutting funding for sanctuary cities and campus carry. Should be fixed soon.

not dsrd, but maybe try Gunbroker or Armslist and look for a used one.

PSA AKs aren't easy to get either. I signed up for an email alert for them about a year ago--and I get emails, and by the time I check email and click the link, they're sold out again. I gather that they aren't building huge numbers of them at once.

I mean, no, but it means that the case is not deformed and that the bullet is seated properly. A snap cap would "work" but they have much MUCH looser tolerances than go gauges. In terms of tolerances, and therefore effectiveness of checking headspace, it goes.

Go gauge
Live round
Snap cap

If you want to do it on a budget just use a live round, if you are autistic about safety buy a go gauge.

REporting back from last night. Turns out the cant wasn't as bad as it looked or the front sight was slightly canted to compensate. I'd deem this acceptable.

I went out to a friend's property today was was ringing steel at ~430 yards with my SLR and Obzor. I haven't shot that far out yet with the Obzor on the rifle and it was pretty cool. I wish I got to shoot that far out more often, most of the time I'm stuck with at max ~125 yards out innamountains which is fun too but there's nothing like shooting steel out past 300 yards.

I just typed out a long reply to you, but the internet crapped out and I lost it. This one will be a little more brief.

I went winter camping last year when there was almost no snow here, but on a 15*F night, I was fine in a 3-season tent, an air mattress with an R-value of less than 3, and a zero degree sleeping bag. Granted, I have a 40 lb dog in the sleeping bag with me helping to keep me warm. It wasn't cozy, but it was good.

I just bought a $240 sleeping pad, which costs more than the 4-season tent I'm going to buy next month. It has an R-value of around 9, which is about as good as it gets for a backpacking sleeping pad. I also got a thermal sleeping bag liner, which you may be interested in:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003BIT004/ref=ya_aw_od_pi?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It makes a big difference

Hammock camping is great, and I'd do it more often if I didn't have a short-haired dog, but in the winter up here, you need a tent. It's very satisfying though.

You're from the midatlantic, right? I forget exactly which state.

The Russians have a hard time throwing anything away. Plums and bakes are still in their inventories, I'm sure, but they don't generally get issued with new rifles. You'll see a lot of plums in the hands of "Novorussian" soldiers especially.

It'll be a long time before both are completely gone from Russian inventories, however. Shit, there's apparently still black follower USGI mags floating around in American armories. I can only imagine how old some of the guns and mags in Russian ones are by now.

they still have slab side mags in circulation, and bakelites are still in widespread use and quite common, Crimea gave us tons of photos of russian troops and their equipment, the only mags that were phased out for being unsatisfactory were the aluminum waffles.

Maybe it was because it was a humid heat, and maybe a drier desert heat won't be as bad but I know I'll still hate it. Cold + wet + higher suicide rates 4 lyfe

I wish I had the time to build my own

I bought an Russian akml hider, too tryhard?
>>
>>32076729
Not bad. Who did the build? It's missing some super minor cosmetic stuff, namely the hand-etched serial on the selector switch the Russians liked to do, but it looks spot-on. Only the most elitist of Kalashnisnobs would be able to tell it's a clone.

>>32076848
This is precisely why I'm so afraid to get into building. I know I'll find some tiny autistic detail that isn't on the rifle and then it'd be all I ever think about when looking at it. I'd need to rifle to be 100% perfect or else I'd dwell on tiny minuscule things.

>>32076888
That's half the fun though. Besides, 99% of the people you meet at the range won't be able to tell the difference, and those that do will get it if you missed something super minor. Long as you're happy with your clone, that's all that matters. This is what the chicken-scratch etchings should look like, for the record.

Also, the pistol grip on an '85 should be plum. '86 is when they stopped doing wood entirely and went to all plum furniture, but the mags went plum in '83 and the pistol grips in '84/'85.

Yeah but still, it'd constantly be in the back of my head that it isn't entirely correct. I'd still love the rifle but I'd be wishing it were perfect.

I really want to pick up at least one of those 88 kits while they're still not too expensive. 1988 AKs are just so interesting with all the little weird things going on with them. I want multiple of these kits just to see what little tweaks there are between them.

Maadis are awesome, but as the other anon said, the rifle looks bubba'd to hell with that paint job. It needs to have a regular AKM pistol grip and stock on it, and you can even just rattle can paint it with engine enamel and bake it on and it will look way better, man. You should do it, I really really want a Maadi, and if I had that one it would be looking sexed out by now.

What kind of groups do you guys typically get with irons at 100 yards? I'm struggling to maintain 10 inches rested, but I can acquire steel plates and shoot very quickly, even standing.
>>
>>32076772
Oh God... yeah dude, that paint job really doesn't look nice.

>>32076802
AK-74, AKM, modern steel makes, bakelite mags... it's all good. Sure the steel is a bit heavier, but I'd be just as happy with an AKM with steel mags as I would be an AK-74 with bakelite mags. Just won't carry quite as much ammo is all. God I hope we can get our foolish ban on FALs and AKs removed some day. Obviously not going to happen with Trudeau j.r., but come on, it's not the Cold War anymore. "Right hand of the free world?" They're barely even used anymore by first world nations, if at all. We have the CZ-858 which is arguably even better than the AKM, so why leave the ban? Friggin' foolishness... but what can be expected of Liberal gun laws? Fuckin' shoulder thing that goes up, fuckin' 30-round assault clip in 1 second, fuckin' bullshit... fuck...

Chimps, whats a fair price for an East German bakelite in 5.45?
>>
>>32077779
Not Chimps, but I'd say $35-40. For the longest time they were the most common bakelite mag, but recently there's been an absolute flood of Russian mags into the US market, pushing the cost of Russian bakes down into the $30-35 range, sometimes even lower. EGs have generally stayed around the same price, but unless you're specifically looking for an *East German* bakelite, it might actually be cheaper to go buy a Russian.

best I can consistently do at 100 with no magnification is 3" on the M10X and SLR-104

some irons are easier for me because of astigmatism. 2MOA dots look like 12MOA starbursts, but I can kind of compensate

with my K31 i can shoot sub MOA easy

the biggest problem is that i don't know where to hold if the target doesn't have good contrast against the background or if it is too small
>>
>>32077779
$45 is the highest I would go and I would only pay that much if I were looking for an EG in particular and was having a bitch of a time finding one. Or perhaps if you found one still in the wrapper which do float around.

Chimps is there an issue buying a new barrel with the gas port already drilled? I'm assuming it would work with standard/non-snowflake kits like AMDs?

Depends if the gas port was drilled in location for a 90 degree or a 45 degree gas block.
>>
>>32077058

>>32077384
$350 is a fucking steal, broski. I'm not sure what type of AKM stock would work best for a big guy (4 U). But maybe you can get some AK74 style poly furniture, and get a stock in NATO length as opposed to the more common Warsaw Pact length stocks out there. Make an account on AKfiles and start looking in the marketplace everyday, you're bound to find something for a good price.

I think USPS hates me. I had a package with some mags and a sling that was supposed to be delivered to me today but it was last scanned at a "hub" like 5 hours away.

There IS a slack group that covers most of oregon and washington, if you want to look for it. We get together occasionally and innawoods or camp or just shoot.

I'm building an AK right now but I think the gas block I got is fucked, it's got some weird green rust in it.
>>
>>32079239
got a link?

Maybe it's bad advice but try and clean the rust off and see what it looks like? Could it be random brass buildup? I'm not sure if that's a real thing in gas blocks but I'm not sure why your brass would go green.

It's just an SLR104, the only mod I've done to it is file off the bump on the trigger to remove the faux two stage pull.

The only things I've done to it in that pic are add a current 74M long collar brake, add a Russian smooth top cover, add a Russian sling, and replace the stock triangle folder with a used KVar polymer folder. Other than those it's just an SLR104 and I can swap parts whenever I feel like it

Alright /akg/, it's early enough that most shitposting shouldn't have started yet, is the Vepr AK a decent buy? I'm looking to spend about $1500 and all the shiposting about WASR/DDI make me nervous about buying one.
I'm really looking for quality, but availability of other furniture/breaks is important as well.
>>
>>32076840
No, definitely not. I'm planning on getting one for my Polish build
>>
>>32080332
Veprs are great.
WASRs are fine too.
DDI is still going through the growing pains of bringing an all american that works as the original, but I think they'll get there soon enough.

The FM is a little too sporter (no cleaning rod, no bayo lug) for me, but it will undoubtedly outlive your children's children.
Not sure what FIME was thinking, but it seems like they were just trying to get a Molot product to us before the election and decided to forgo some features to make it happen faster.
But that's just my speculation.

An AK will weigh less than a PTR and there are now really good drop-in triggers for AKs.

7.62x39mm is somewhat less expensive than 7.62x51mm NATO, though there are also PTRs in the former caliber now.

I have an AMD-65 that I absolutely love. This is the best gun I've ever had the pleasure to handle, but it hasnt been without its problems. I may just be retarded and there may be a simple solution to these problems, but the safety is tight as hell. I'm unable to operate it with my index and need to move my hand from fire control and use my thumb to operate the safety. My second issue is the button for the folding stock digs into my hand when handling the rifle. I've been wearing gloves to work around this issue, but if there is some way to modify the rifle I'd love to know about it.
