No, mid-length just shoots softer. Get a carbine gas, 16" barrel, full auto carrier, H or H2 buffer, or maybe a vltor A5 buffer, and you will have a very reliable AR. More gas being used to send the bolt carrier rearward, and a heavier mass returning the bolt carrier home. It will have more felt recoil but it will be more reliable.

I went to the range today after work since it's half off for NRA members on Fridays, and it reminded me how blessed most of us are to have nice guns, nice jobs (some of us), and a place to come talk about it
There was a couple in the lane next to me shooting a Taurus. 38, SD9VE, and a PSA lower/Frankenstein carbine gas, MOE handguard, 16" with a claymore brake on the end. Neither person put anything resembling a group on paper, and I'm convinced the guy was trying to lose a thumb by shooting his SD9VE like a revolver, with his thumbs crossed.

He would load each mag in via slapping the bolt release and then hitting the charging handle, and wondered why his gun was messing up and ejecting a round. I felt compelled to explain, but didn't want to do that in front of the guy's girlfriend and interfere.

Even the lowest among us can rest knowing it could be worse. At least trying to be Gucci is a step in the right direction. Also, my phone's camera shit the bed, so no range pics.

It just felt comfy to me, and i like the way they look on short/slim ARs. Also, it's less snag prone. I don't see that as much of an issue unless you're running around innawoods though. I know a lot of people with MFT stocks that like them. If it suits you, get it. Stocks are like pistol grips and forward grips and come down to personal preference mostly.

I have one and it's extremely solid. It's lightweight and low bulk as well. The buttplate is angled, which gives it a half inch extra length. I personally like the extra length, but I do notice that it's different. If your height begins with a 5', then you may not like it.

For what it's worth, the fact that the lock up is so solid can be kind of a negative when you go to adjust or collapse it, since you need to put more muscle into the stock than you might expect in order to get it to move.

What's the rule of thumb for positioning a vertical forward grip?

I used it like a thumb break. I've been using handstops/afgs more just because they make it a little easier for me to shoot off of barricades or with a bipod.
I've got the magpul AFG and handstop kits, and find myself preferring the AFG between the two. The noveske handstop on my rifle is really nice, though. I wedge it between my index and middle fingers and pull my rifle into my shoulder.
