Since this thread seems to be ammo themed, I have an 18", 1:8 twist barrel. Yes, I know "it'll shoot anything well" an will stabilize from 50-80gr loads fine. The specific question tonight is, which gr should I start a stockpile of? I started m193 and m855.Then the place I shoot at put a ban on shooting unless you're taking a deer/hog. So, now I've been second guessing myself on my purchase since I haven't had a chance to get groups from my rifle yet. I'm also thinking about grabbing a few mags worth of 77gr. Thoughts? Brands to stay away from/go towards?

Generally, 55 grain m193 is great bulk ammo. Theres no real need to pay more CPR for steel core 62grn unless you like it for some reason.
Im guessing that you have an SS barrel? I would try out a few boxes of 77 grn first to see how your barrel likes it. My 18" ss rainier 1x8 twist barrel doesnt like heavy bullets as well as lighter ones.

Armalite is decent. Things are made to spec. The DEF-10 configuration is almost exactly the same as the AR-10B Carbine specs. Some parts have been cheapened (like basic triggers instead of Armalite's tactical 2-stage). To the best of my knowledge, it's still made to Armalite specs and machined on the same equipment as the "full" AR-10A rifles.

Reality is that established manufacturers price things based on market prices, not on manufacturing cost plus x% margin. Until recently, there was no reason to have a DEF-10 since AR-308 buyers either bought DPMS's (chunky with a cheap but decent magazine) or full Armalite's (with an expensive but more reliable magazine). If you didn't buy from either, it was either a high-end copy of one pattern or a KAC SR-25.

Personally, I have Armalite's because of luck. When I went buying the first time, I didn't know shit except that I wanted an AR-like rifle in 308. I was looking for an Armalite, DPMS, or RRA. I had no preference on magazine or barrel length or furniture. I happened to ask the dealer for an AR in 308, the dealer said he had none, but the guy next to me was open to selling his.
