Yuh on both accounts. Keep a mag of hollowpoints ready for HD.
FMJ 7.62x39 will fly right through your wall. Also think about a folding stock if you have a cramped home.

>>

>>
>>31854464
I'm not super well versed on this stuff but I don't see even hollow point or soft point 7.62x39 being hampered much by anything other than a brick wall
>>
>>31853902
POSP is made by BelOMO in Belarus. That company has been sanction free for something like 10 years now.

It's perfectly legal to buy from Canada. If you're looking at Eastwave, they usually drop-ship, meaning the scope will come from Belarus to you.
>>
>>31854544
Still less penetration than FMJ. HP and SP tends to slow to less lethal levels after it ventilates an invader. It'll still fuck your wall, but its far less likely to kill your neighbors.
>>
>>31854464
So will 98% of Russian "hollowpoint" or "softpoint" ammo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL8aMITCG_0
and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6RVuISLJ3o

illustrate the normal behavior of Russian "expanding" bullets in actual gelatin. You might as well be shooting FMJ.

Good defense/antipersonnel bullets have been designed and manufactured in the past but are not currently available in loaded ammunition in this caliber.

The least bad option is commercial brass case, softpoint hunting ammo, IF your rifle feeds it (not all AKs do, having been designed around FMJ ammo). This ammo can be spendy.

I love the AK, I love the 7.62x39mm cartridge, but there are not a lot of good choices in home defense ammo in the caliber.
>>
>>31854582
I roll my own with the Hornady V-Max.
Works great.
>>
>>31854613
Cool. What powder are you using and how much of it?

Are you using new old stock VMAX bullets? I thought Hornady discontinued the .310" 123gr VMAX four or five years ago. I can get Hornady 123gr FMJ in .310" but nothing else, locally.
>>
>>31854114
Any other thoughts on this, friends.
>>
>>31854652
Stick a box end wrench in there flatways and then roll it to pop out the dents
>>
>>31854652
A couple threads ago, various ideas and techniques were offered. You can drill a hole in the opposite side of the mag from the dent and beat the dent out with a punch, through the hole. Or you can put the mag in a vise and reach inside it with a tool that's got a wider end and will only fit in the mag in one particular orientation (specifically recommended for steel AK mags was a 13mm box end wrench). Put it in the mag, push the bulbous end to the dent (so to speak), put a cheater bar through the hole on the other end of the wrench, and twist the wrench a time or two. Pop the dents out from the inside.
>>
>>31854652
Get wood block to fit inside of mag, mallet the outside. Add elbow grease and time until it works.
Maybe use the follower to get the right sized block.
Extra credit: Make wood or plymer sixed block that fits perfectly into mag. Patent and profit.
>>
>>31854526
Good to know

I use 28 grains of 4895.
I use new stock 123gr V-Max, its in stock at Midway and grafs.

I buy in bulk because I also load them up in 7.62x54r for my Mosins. They are a FAST shooting round, very flat. Perfect for thin skinned mid sized game.
I've even tried loading them up in 303 with good results. No keyholeing out to 200 with acceptable accuracy.

Looking for this. DSA sells them for $2200 on their website but offer dealer pricing; should I ask my FFL if he is able to get on the dealer pricing and order it for me?
>>
>>31854712
I'm glad to hear the VMAX is still available. I'd heard Hornady discontinued it. I know they switched the SST in for the steel case ammo Hornady sells in 7.62x39, for no reason that I can imagine (the SST is a good bullet, but the things it is good for are not things people generally buy an AK to do).

I would have thought 4895 was a bit slow for 7.62x39 and the small case needed a faster powder, like AA1680 or Reloder 7. Does the "service rifle" powder speed range work well in this caliber?

Do you use a chronograph? Do you know what kind of velocities you're getting?

What cases are you using? I've been looking locally for virgin 7.62x39 brass and the only thing I've found has been Prvi Partizan at 60 cents a case or higher--their loaded ammo is cheaper. Or are you reloading the steel somehow?
>>
>>31854742
That's for the tips, bud. Much appreciated. They're $10 Romys, so I'll probably do the drill-and-punch. I was also thinking of a simple fix with a file.
>>
>>31854820
If its a small enough dent you might as well just drill out the dent instead of drilling hole in other side to punch out the dent. Either way you have a hole in your mag. If its a big dent then just ignore me

That's the worst way, and shows that you're a lazy amateur.
Just find a tool or something you have laying around that'll push the dents out and do it right.

I did it with $5 romys, and 25 of them are 100% functional and don't look like a pincushion.

I use 4895 because I buy it by the barrel. I shoot an M1 Garand in 3gun and 4895 is the powder that works best for it. Plus it works in all the other rifles I shoot.

Is it ideal for 7.62x39? Nope but it works, cycles the action, and delivers decent performance. I get about 2200fps with my load.

I buy brass cased ammo and reload it. I'm not making match grade ammo. I've never bought virgin brass for the 7.62x39..

Is $680 a fair price for a NPAP considering the political pressures on the market? I'm debating getting one before Hillary gets elected and appoints a new SCJ.
>>
>>31855264
ah, cool.

Have you seen the solid brass bullets CNC Warrior is selling? .310", 110gr each or something like that, solid brass flatbase spitzer bullets, cannelured, each individually CNC machined. I am not exactly certain what the purpose is, or if there's something they're supposed to do better than FMJ. Maybe they're supposed to be for target shooting, more consistent because they're made of a homogenous material or something like that.

Also, you shoot a Garand in 3-Gun? You have my respect, good sir.
>>
>>31855431

>>
>>31855429
I wanted an NPAP or OPAP but they don't have chrome lined or any kind of nitride/fenocite/etc on barrel. Given that a lot of AK ammo is corrosive I thought it best to stay with a treated bore. But I'm not an expert, I only play one on the interwebz.
>>
>>31855429
Fair.
Not good. But fair for the current market.
>>
>>31855429
No, you can easily find a WASR for that price online. Literally the only reason to buy an NPAP over a WASR is if it's significantly cheaper.
>>
>>31855455
Do you know how to cure 7th round stoppage
>>
WASR 10/63 or new 2016 WASR?
>>
>>31855468
From what I understand the chrome lined barrel is primarily to extend barrel life under sustained fully automatic fire. I'd probably be shooting mostly Tula anyways so I'm not too worried about corrosive ammo.
>>
>>31855518

I just updated my spreadsheet and the AVERAGE price for a WASR 10, purchased from an online store with them IN STOCK (no auction sites) and including shipping and a $35 transfer fee, is $791.
>>

The $791 includes shipping, taxes and transfer fee.
Plus it's an average.
For example, Atlantic charges 30 bucks for shipping so they charge 759 as the price, but the spreadsheet counts it as 824, because of the shipping and a transfer fee.

>Magpul AK stuff doesn't give me a boner
>I can see the handguards are functional-looking, but do they have heat shields? or is the serious user gonna have to spray silver spray paint inside them then rig up some kind of homemade heat shields inside them made from aluminum foil?
>grip is usable but it does not give me any tremendous boner or seem to me to give any tremendous advantage over the standard Warsaw Pact pattern AKM grip straight outta 1961

Not exactly.
At that point, I'd rather just source all Russian parts, rather than a bulgy parts kit, get a 74uLLC receiver, and get a polish blank barrel to get turned to the proper profile and drilled for the correct gas port location for the Russian FS/GB.

I built mine for just under 500 using the barreled reciever and the kit they sell with the ALG AKT. Had to fit the dust cover and had trouble working the bolt at first. But it test fired just fine. I got a bumpski on it now that Ill try out next range trip

Yeah I saw it. But I'd be saving $100 compared to a new WASR or a NPAP. I asked for a rough round count which you can't really trust, but I'm going to try to get it down to $550. At that price point I don't think it would be a bad deal, especially considering the market right now.

I have no idea to be honest. Watched a pretty good review and he didn't have a whole lot of bad remarks. The rifle has a 74 style muzzle brake on it so that issue doesn't seem to be a problem with this particular gun.

Wolf used to be lacquered. They stopped using the lacquer, at least mostly, around... I think it was ten years ago.

People were shooting steel cased lacquered Russian ammo AR15s with tight match chambers, and were shocked, SHOCKED that they ended up having to use a steel cleaning rod to drive case after case out of the lacquered-up chamber. They complained about the lacquer, and, since the lacquer costs money anyway, the Russians omitted it.

The 7.62x39mm cartridge is more tapered than 5.56mm and extracts with much less force, and the AK's massive op rod and bolt carrier and huge claw extractor put much more force on cases in the AK's chamber during the primary extraction phase. The AK was designed for steel cases from the ground up. Everything about the design, from the case geometry to the (normally) chrome-lined chambers is to help with reliability running steel case ammo.

AR15s were designed around brass case ammo, and 5.56mm has a much less tapered case. It should not be surprising when people had problems. Even some 5.56mm AKs don't run especially well with Russian steelcase .223 ammo, as it is dirty, underpowered when you compare it to milspec M193 or M855, and did I mention it was loaded in steel cases?

I shoot steel case ammo in guns designed for steel case ammo. I own ARs, too. I don't shoot steel in them.

strange.

I was at a gun show on Saturday and saw what I thought might be a collimator sight.

It looked like the upper half of a Weaver "Qwik Point," complete with transparent orange plastic light tube under the plexiglass dome in front, and looking in the rear one could only see a bright orange dot suspended in space. This was sort of like the old South African Armson "Occluded Eye Gunsight" from 30+ years ago.

It appeared to have clamp mounts to fit an air gun/.22 dovetail. It had no other screws or knobs and no obvious method of adjusting windage or elevation. The only marking on it was "WARSZAWA" on top of the tube.

The seller wanted $20 for it and I was for a brief moment tempted.

>>

There were about 2000 of these available from Rom MoD and I doubt they bought all of them given the $240 asking price.

My guess is that they bought a small number of these to ship with their md 63 kits (which they also overpay for) so they can generate some more traffic for their site with hype.

>>
>>31861097
I'm going to open a retail website in about a year to do just about that. AKs and other popular soviet designs are so expensive now that there is no longer any room with kits for a middle-man on the U.S. market.

Probably moving those mags within a week after Nov. 8. If Hillary wins, I'll skim 500 or so off the top for you guys here.
>>
>>31861064
How can you overpay for something nobody else has if you can still sell it with a profit margin? They could list them for $750 and they would still all sell eventually. I don't think anybody has ever had these kits before, they will sell eventually as long as they are below $1000.
>>
>>31861180
That's one way to look at it, and you're not wrong.

Those kits have been available for almost a year now and the reason no one else has touched them is mainly that no one wants to "normalize" those prices by purchasing them. The Rom MoD is pretty jewey in that if you validate their asking price with a purchase, they will ask that price for years to come, even if the market changes substantially.

honestly from what I've read the Russians did tests on milled vs stamped ak's and found stamped to be more durable. sam7 may be the exception since it's 5 ton hot die hammer forged for 3 hours but as it is the stamped ones are ridiculously durable anyway..and there's a range in Los Vegas that says the trunion on the stamped ones start to go out after 80-100 thousand rounds.. and im pretty sure they were welded qnd hammer forged anyway so its a like a 50 dollar part to replace. also honestly all the parts in any milspec (not American made garbage like c39v2 as I own unfortunately and i.o. inc ) should only start to wear at around that at which point all the parts give out and u can just replace the whole gun instead. I bought a sam7 and regret it because the paint is cheap garbage with no park making it useless for when zombie invasion comes and there's no lube but break fluid..unless u want to destroy the gun. all wasr come with parkerization if I understand right. desu milled ak's are a overpriced meme entirely and should be avoided like ar15's

Well, Constitutionally speaking, if Trump wants to do something to change existing laws, he has to work with Congress. He has to find one or more sympathetic lawmakers in both houses of Congress to draft a bill that would, for example, repeal the Gun Control Act of 1968. The lawmaker will introduce it in Congress and it will be discussed in committee and possibly amended, and if the committee finds favorably, brought to the floor for a vote. If it passes in both houses, it may now have been changed significantly, with things added or deleted (Democrats love to use the power of these committees to tack totally unrelated things onto bills, like "it's now a repeal of GCA '68 and also ten gorillion dollars for Planned Parenthood to use to build new abortion clinics and also change the ten-dollar bill to feature the Village People and a gay pride slogan instead of President Hamilton" etc.) Anyway, then a joint House-Senate conference committee works on a compromise version, which goes back to each house again to be voted on, and if it passes in both houses, the President can choose to sign it into law, or not.

The Constitution makes it hard as BALLS to write new laws or change laws. The Democrats get shit done, though, mainly because the GOP doesn't like to do much more than grumble a bit and go along. Even when the GOP holds the Presidency and both houses, they don't get shit done, because they don't want to rock the boat, and because the Democrats, and the press (but this is redundant) do a full court press 24/7/365 to tie up anything they try to do in committee until the next election and the press and the late-night TV comedians would all shit themselves and say that the President wants to kill babbies and cute puppies and blow up the world and eat the last endangered Oregon Spotted Owl, etc., etc., etc.

Why, yes, American politics IS a train wreck, even when it isn't an election year.

My Intrac import Romy '74. Note upturned charging handle, which is I am told an unusual variation.

The front sight base doesn't have a retaining pin for muzzle devices. I will probably end up either trying to drill it and put in a spring and detent pin myself or just knocking out the pins and putting on a complete AKM type front sight base.

Muzzle device is a long AIMS74 type from CNC Warrior, and is supposedly the correct length and geometry for AIMS74 rifles in current issue. Recoil of the 5.45mm is so minimal that they've supposedly foregone the brake altogether in favor of flash suppression. I am told the Bulgarians also have a slotted muzzle device they generally issue on their service AKs that is likewise designed to be a flash suppressor rather than a brake, though people selling them call them the "Bulgarian Flash Comp." It's not a compensator at all, it's just a long slotted flash suppressor designed with a step down at the front to accept an AK74 bayonet's guard ring.

Different guy got a '74 for $650.

I have shot it. When I got it, it had what I was told was the original Romy semiauto trigger, which was rough as a cob and had backlash. I had a Tapco single hook trigger installed, which was a great improvement, and had a guy thread the (unthreaded) muzzle for the muzzle device.

It's tremendously fun to shoot. It has almost no recoil. It's like shooting an enormous, loud .22 LR.

It occurs to me now that I should have tried to zero it. I have only been able to shoot it at an indoor range, which means I just put the rear sight on the battlesight setting and ran through 4-5 mags as fast as I could as a function check. Everything went approximately where I put the front sight but I know that's no substitute for proper zeroing.

>>
>>31863659
maybe. Someone at BATF exceeded his authority with the 7N6 ban, because the 1983 "cop killer bullet law" is specifically written solely about handgun ammunition (someone show me a 5.45x39mm handgun) and only for cartridges larger than .22 caliber. 5.45x39mm has a bore diameter of something like 0.214", groove diameter around 0.220", and is measurably smaller than .22 caliber. Legally it should be exempt. Whenever anyone tries to take BATF to court over this kind of thing, though, their response is basically "fuck you we do what we want" and judges let them get away with it.

I know less about how the "Kalashnikov Concern" import ban was legally implemented. If it's one of Obama's executive orders, his successor can cancel it with the stroke of a pen.

>>
>>31863697
To be fair, they're using a lead-core bullet, not the 5N7. To keep it the same length it's 60 grains, not 53 grains. They'd have to use a much lighter bullet to get the 2950 or so ft/sec the 5N7 was spec'd for.

2650-2700 is about what I'd expect, just as a guess, for roughly the same peak pressure with a bullet that much heavier.

I have a very crude rule of thumb when it comes to estimating safe top velocities for a given bullet weight when we have another known upper limit combination of known bullet weight and muzzle velocity.

I guess by averaging the velocity to arrive at the same momentum and the velocity to arrive at the same kinetic energy for a given bullet weight. 2900 ft/sec for a 60gr bullet is hot. The spec for 7N6 is only about 2950. I would expect to get maybe 2675 with a 60gr bullet and only 2400 or so with the 70gr bullet you sometimes see.

Of course, this rule of thumb is just an estimate, intended to be on the conservative side for safety, and does not take into account different powder speeds, etc.

I didn't get it.
They sent me one of these (according to the part number): atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ddi-milled-ak47-detail.html?Itemid=0

And it doesn't have a slanted muzzle brake, but one of the flat ones.

AK gets made in Russia, sent to Bulgaria and remarked - Circle 10! Many such cases.

Most likely, the Izhmash triangle is a part of the forging die, so however far Russia went to make these parts, the triangle is inevitable.

You see the same thing on "Bulgarian" RPK-74s, they clearly had the Molot shield ground off and were restamped with the circle 10.

Old rifle: accepts the old Type 1 AK bayonets only due to having been made with that type bayonet lug, see attached image

US-made furniture from K-Var

Parts source not mentioned in article

New rifle:

article does not mention this but photo shows same type of early bayonet lug

Made from Bulgarian parts kits

Furniture source not mentioned in article

I will guess, just based on this, that these are two different batches of milled rifles, maybe the prior batch was built on East German or Polish parts kits or something and the new one is Bulgarian? Contact DDI and ask them, maybe?

Boiling water, dishwashing liquid, old toothbrush.

In my opinion any kind of lubricant or foreign matter left inside a magazine is likely to eventually make it inside the chamber on the side or base of a cartridge, or worse. Oils and greases can cause primers not to work and make ammo into duds. I would leave the mag absolutely dry once cleaned.

Now, though? If you want an AK... bear in mind the old ones with those "SAR-1" markings very frequently had cockeyed sights, gas tubes, and rear sight bases. Check carefully, if an AK is what you want right now.
