Dropped out of HS in junior year because I hated school. Took a long time to start getting my shit together, but finally (a year later) I started taking my GED tests and plan to finish that soon. After that my next intention is to enlist in the US Navy in a computer-based job.

military is able to pick and choose because there's not a huge need for bodies right now compared to a decade ago. there's guys with high school diplomas who would be easier for the recruiter to deal with too. if you look like a star candidate (you tested great) he would be more likely to go to bat for you than if you tested badly.

>>31716628
he's probably going to need the 15 credits to start with before the recruiter wants to even think about things

(Checked)

Friend enlisted navy recently and has been talking about it. Seems good for someone like me who fucked up college and has a lot of debt now. It's a good way to get skills and contribute some shit to the country, many in my family served, gain discipline, etc. I know signing bonuses and student loan repayment programs can be pretty good.

I'm pretty confident i can qualify as a nuke, but is it a meme? I think learning nuclear energy would be fascinating and is obviously a valuable skill in civilian life. Only thing that's been confusing is the ASVAB scoring. For nukes you need: VE+AR+MK+MC+NAPT=290

as far as i understand, your score on each of the categories your percentile score relative to other test takers, with NAPT being an aggregate average of some other sections. Does this basically mean that I only need to score around a 60th percentile in all these fields to qualify? (VE(60)+AR(60)+MK(60)+MC(60)+NAPT(60)=300)

that seems pretty easy, but the required scores are much higher than other navy rates so im confused

Just read the FAQ and the bit on ASVAB was helpful, but again to clarify, all scores, either line or AFQT are based on percentile and then added to check rate qualification correct?

Any input on nuke or other good navy rates would be awesome

>>
>>31716411

Possible (by joining the guard/reserve) but not recommended. Finish college and then go for OCS.
>>
>>31717349
The line scores aren't percentile based, and aren't a 1-99 scale. Only the overall score for the ASVAB (AFQT) works like that.

People say nuke is a meme because recruiters sell it super hard as some sort of incredible white-collar nuclear scientist job where everyone can drop a package go officer immediately or get out and be rich.

Realistically, you're a reactor tech. It's a complicated device, but you're still a power maintenance technician, not an engineer. It's long hours and difficult schooling. Some of the hardest working conditions. There's very limited slots to try and go officer, even though 100% of nukes "plan" to do it since their recruiter told them it was easy.

Civilian opportunities are good, but not amazing. You will eventually make six figures if you stay in the field, but that's true of a lot of fields.

Overall, most of the nerds who get meme'd into nuke would probably be happier and just as successful with a computer/intel job.

Nuke's a miserable fucking job. If it weren't, the bonuses wouldn't be so high and people wouldn't promote as quickly (to replace all the people that just do 6 years and get out; we called that "leadership through attrition").
>>
>>31717349
I got high enough in electronics to go nuke, and all the while my package was in I met one nuke and a couple of guys who'd been on subsa and carriers. The guys who only knew nukes told me that they hated their job, the oneI did meet said she hated her job. Also the one I met was in my community college calculus class. My shitty grades kept me from getting nuke (got aecf instead) but part of me is relieved, despite the fact I was very interested in nuclear power while getting my acossiates.

Google sf86, thats the form you fill out. Investigator may or may not talk to everyone you list on that form, its up to them. After they do that, they interview you and go over everything you put on that form to make sure its correct. Then they are supposed to submit their evaluation and then after a month to 8 months depending on if the person handling ur stuff actually feels like doing their job, your clearance is granted.

What 15 credits is this?
>>
>>31719702
If you have a GED you need 15 college credits/units to not need a waiver to join.
>>
Friendly reminder that for army, the recruiter has the ability to get you any job you want even if its not on the list. So if you want something that doesnt pop up on the list even though you scored high enough to get it, tell the recruiter to call you back when it does open. Or better yet, say nevermind. Their 1sg will get on their ass for not being able to convince you to sign up for anything, and they will non stop call to ask if youre still interested in joining as random job. Just be adamant on that one specific job you want.

This only applies to army. The other services dont let you choose jobs.

I don't do then anymore mayne. Not big numbers anyways. Used to PowerLift but I cut it and dropped weight so I can run and do calisthenics better.
I had to drop a bit of weight.
I quit benching to work on dips and push-ups more.
I still deadlift but it's low weight (225) and high reps.
Same with OHP, low weight high reps.
I do weighted sled pushes (sprints)
And farmers walks a lot.
Don't mess with weights too much anymore aside from that.
I like lifting but the military just doesn't care about it lol. They don't care if you can bench 405 they just want you to crank out pushups, which doesn't mean you can't do both, I just use my time in the gym differently.
>>
>>31721228

>>
>>31721295
>nd farmers walks a lot.
I do those too.
I get what youre saying to an extent. The idea that lifting heavy =/= doesnt translate to body weight stuff is completely wrong though. It only has that reputation cause people assume if you can bench a lot then are most likely fat as well. As long as you have a low bf% then lifting heavy will only help you.
>>
>>31721315
I wouldnt. Thats a huge pay cut going from military officer to uniformed police.

If you want to be state police, just join the police dept. Assuming you already have a degree since you want to go officer in the military, youll have no trouble getting in.

>>
>>31721348
Yeah I know. Benching doesn't hurt pushup count. I just have a hard time fitting push-ups, dips, and bench into the same day. I feel like I either work on one or half-ass everything. Idk I guess it's a time management thing.
I do Push/Pull/rest routine so on my push day I'm doing push-ups, dips, OHP, sled sprints, lunges etc. etc. And decided to cut bench because if I did that as well I'd be in the gym way too long

>>
>>31721633
Ok, i assume you want to comission as an officer? Did you do rotc? Because if not youre not gonna get much of a choice in your job selection after OCS. More than likely youll end up in logistics. Now, im not saying to go enlisted. Being any kind of officer still makes your resume look better than being enlisted. So when you go officer, after a couple of years you can try to switch job areas. Either way stay as an officer for at least 6 years if you can. 6 years is experience timeframe they look at the most favorably. While in, try and work on a master in CJ, im working on mine through st josephs university, its a 1.5 yr program and i take 2 classes every 3 months.

All you really. Need is a 4 year degree with a 3.0gpa of course. But the cj background looks good. Also if youre wondering why having a fuller resume is better than just having degree. Its for the salary negotiations. Better qualified = more pay.

>>31721998
It depends on if it's war time or peace time.
Right now we are pretty much peacetime.
In peacetime, the only people seeing combat are special operations.
So if you want to be a janitor with a small, small chance of ever being in a firefight, Infantry is the job for you.

If you really want combat you're going to have to go into a special operations that does a lot of direct action (DA).
Like Army Rangers for example.

>(CJ degree not needed but it looks better)

Depends on the federal agency, but most of them actually prefer a hard skill STEM degree to CJ.

Take digital forensics (a HUGE part of federal law enforcement nowadays). It's easy to teach a Computer Science major to do criminal justice stuff. It's fucking impossible to teach a Criminal Justice major to effectively do computer stuff. Plus they know that CJ degrees are generally easy as shit to pass, so they're going to get dumber people on average than if they ask for STEM.
>>
>>31722169

Generally 6-12 months for a full investigation. They won't wait for your TS/SCI to be done before you ship, you will generally have your investigation finished during secondary training.

Just looked at every State Department LEO-related job. None of them mentioned preference for a Bachelor's in CJ. What "DoD agent jobs" are you talking about? All of the intelligence agency jobs prefer STEM (CIA/DIA/NSA/FBI).

CJ is a meme degree, sorry bro. Half of the people in CJ are there because they think it's a good degree to skate by on because it is easy, the rest are there because they think they need a CJ degree to be a cop. Get good grades and they won't hold it against you, but don't kid yourself into thinking it'll give you a leg up over a hard-skills degree.

I can say for sure it used to be that way. Not sure if its still as good but still probably good. This is because some stupid sailors/marines get drunk there every so often and go ape shit. Last i heard some marine raped a local girl and so that caused a huge liberty restriction. Its still probably great though. The 2 big ship bases there are Yokosuka and Sasebo. I been to both and Sasebo is good but Yoko is amazing. Its like an hr outside Tokyo plus theres bars and restaurants are right off base.

With all that being said i was stationed at 32nd street in San Diego. HIGHLY recommend. Living in San Diego was next to being in Heaven. 75 degrees year round. Beachs everywhere. Amazing food, amazing nightlife. Massive amounts of hot chicks.

As far as big bases go id say San Diego and Yoko are the best but Hawaii is great too. For east coast Norfolk supposedly sucks ass but the deployments to Europe are supposedly very good.

Dont even compare the navy and army when it comes to choosing a job.

In the navy, can you say, i want gunners mate or corpsman or seal or swcc, and actually get that exact job before even finishing meps medical or do any extra shit besides asvab? Nope

They only offer you jobs off the list period. Army just makes a call, or you can wait for the job to open up without any negative reprecussions.
>>
>>31726148

Navy and Army have basically the same deal, anon.

You choose your job at MEPS, you can back out if the one you want isn't there but it'll piss your recruiter off.

Only difference is the Army "reservation" system where your recruiter can try to grab you a slot off the list before you go to MEPS. But if anything happens at MEPS and you can't sign that day, the reservation goes away.

To become a USMC Critical Skills Operator

Do you have to go in as a Rifleman or is there a better set of skills one should shoot for before putting in your Critical Skills Operator package?
>>
>>31726203

You will only barely be arriving at your first duty station after a year. While there's no hard time limit on dropping an OCS packet, you need to be known as a good troop and have the support of your chain of command if you want the process to go smoothly.

That means at least a year at your first duty station, so you're looking at 2~ years in the Army on the low end.

But the better question is: Why the hell are you enlisting if you want to be an officer? That's not how you become an officer.
>>
>>31726209
no, youre fucking ignorant if you believe you have the same freedom of choice in the navy compared to army.

In the army you can literally pick any job thats off list. Navy you cant. Youre stuck with the choices on the list. If you want a closed job in the army all they do is make a phone call.

For example if all that was on list for navy was boatswain, youre stuck choosing that job or walking. If it was the army you could say i will only take crypto and they would make a call and get it.
>>
>>31726203
Why would you enlist if you want officer?
>>
>>31726313

Try pulling that shit with a small job field. Yeah, you can call the Recruiting Operations Center and score a 68W or an 11B in a pinch, but that's because you're getting the slot from some dumbass who reserved it and failed their pee test at MEPS.

They can't just magic up rare jobs like dog handler, firefighter, or watercraft operator.

The Navy can do the same thing if you want a common job, they make a phone call and see if any have opened up (no-shows, etc)
>>
>>31726325

>>
>>31726425

>My dad who was in the Army a long time ago told me it's a good idea

Your dad is wrong. If you want to be an officer then go be an officer. Plenty of people enlist with degrees because they don't want to be an officer. It's a choice you have to make.
>>
>>31726345
Yes they can....i got a 35M slot in early 2010, when that shit was closed for half a year. 20k bonus and the kicker. Literally went to recruiter, did asvab, and was told shit was closed. They called recruiting command and after being on hold for 3 hours, they got me the job i wanted plus language school.

I know 31k and watercraft people, so idk how hard it is to get those jobs. Must not be impossible.

The two times i went to a navy recruiter to support a friend joining, said the same shit. You can pick your job, from whats available. Even when I asked if they could do what I knew army recruiters could do and call it in, they said they dont do that. The two friends who joined got high 80s and 90s qt scores, and their line scores were high, so its not like they werent qualified to do the jobs. Then both recruiters said the shpeel about if you dont pick a job off the list im gonna blacklist you from joining the navy through any of the recruiters in the county. So 1 friend went swcc, and the other went crypto, even though that wasnt their first choice. This was at 2 seperate recruiting stations, one in CA, and one in VA.

I was in DC a couple of weeks ago talking to FBI recruiters. Unless you speak a critical language or are a cyber guru and CJ REALLY interests you enough to go through a degree program, stay away. This is literally from the mouth of the FBI. They get so many people who don't know what the FBI does who go for CJ degrees and they turn away thousands of people with CJ degrees every month.
>>
>>31728299
Well when he enlists, make sure he doesnt sign for more than 4 years. 5 years if its a intel job that isnt 35F. Anything more and hes being trolled. Also, only bonus that is worth it is the GI bill kicker, it adds another 900$ to his monthly payments when he goes to school. I know a guy who makes 4200$ a month going to school on the GI bill. 800$ from bonus, 500$ from vocrehab, and 2900$ from gi bill. And thats all tax free for the 4 years hes going to school.
>>
>>31728214

You just described every single intel MOS. Even the "sexy" 35L has desk work to be done.

It's hilarious that there are still people in these threads who have never even been in the military acting like they are SMEs about what difference MOSs actually do.
>>
>>31728326
I interview people hired for fed leo jobs, not specifically for FBI. And they do look favorably at CJ related degrees. The majority of former FBI agents I have interviewed have CJ related degrees.

I have a friend currently going through the process for FBI specifically, and his recruiter told him his masters in CJ made up for the lack of work exp on his resume, since all he has is 1 years of engineering work exp, and 3 years as admin for army, he has a bullshit engineer degree from a Devry type university.
>>
>>31728214
Just tell them what happened. They know what to look for. If there is any confusion the have a psych dr at meps they'll have you talk to if they think you're bsing them. Even then, as long as you seem like you have a good head on your shoulders, and the story doesn't sound like bs (which yours doesn't) you'll be fine.
>>
>>31717948
oh fuck thats kinda smart actually
>>
>>31728347
The reason 35F is talked alot here is because that specific intel mos has a shit ton of open slots for schools compared to cool intel jobs like 35M. Rarely any paper pushers go for the extra shit which is the reason why so few people try out.
>>
>>31728388
>And they do look favorably at CJ related degrees.

That is not what two different employees of the FBI who handle recruiting told me while we were in the Starbucks in the Hoover building.

They checked first to make sure I wasn't in a CJ program before they said it.

>his masters in CJ
>1 years of engineering work exp
>3 years as admin for army

These three things are not the same as having a Bachelor's in CJ.

>>31728416
Original anon who started question topic i responded to had a bachelors in english...and he wanted mp officer for leo exp. I told him its gonna be highly unlikely he gets that going straight to ocs without rotc. So he should work on a masters in CJ while hes in.
>>
>>31728443
I would say avoid CJ even if it's a Master's because of saturation, but the person you're talking about had engineering experience (even if only a year) in addition to military experience and a Master's.

After a personal level Q&A what was recommended was to have something that makes you stand out from, this is paraphrasing, the sea of directionless applicants with CJ degrees. One of the guys I was with on the trip is at a decent level of fluency in Hungarian, I already had intel experience (and I met the previous applicant in an intensive Russian language program), another had interned with the DoE and FEMA.

None of us were in CJ programs and that was cited as a positive.

Missed this post, I couldnt find a job posting on usajobs for DoS job Im talking about, but heres one for customs that has the same wording for the education qualifications as the state dept one im talking about.

And not every agent is a stem major. Otherwise their company would be undermanned. How many stem majors take a pay cut coming out of university to work for the gov when they can get paid way more? Its the same as saying Army only takes stem graduates into OCS. How many random civs do you think actually join the army after university without having done ROTC? We had philosophy and poetry majors, were they outliers? No.
>>
>>31722977
>State dept and certain DoD agent jobs require a cj related degree.

>State dept
>Requiring a CJ degree

I didn't realize you had to show your CJ degree before you could take the Foreign Service Officer exam.
>>
>>31728495
I completely understand where youre coming from and have heard the same things. But the problem with those statements those recruiters put out is that how many educated and target language fluent citizens actually apply for the FBI? They are unrealistic expectations. They just say that to make the job sound competitive. Its just like how the army says they wont take anyone without a stem degree and above a 3.0GPA, its just not true. All companies need employees.

Also, again, my info is coming from my interviews of people for their clearances for gov jobs. The majority of edu background I see for LEO type positions is CJ.
>>
>>31726778

>The majority of edu background I see for LEO type positions is CJ.

Which is why I would recommend to stay away from CJ unless you meet two criteria:

You have other attributes and skills which make you stand far above most CJ undergrads/grads AND you just like CJ so much you can't stand the thought of not getting a CJ degree.

This isn't the first time I've heard someone working in law enforcement say NOT to get a CJ degree. I've also heard it from people working at the local and state agency levels.

Cool. Glad to know out of the 2 times i brought up the whole phone call thing in regards to 2 high scoring applicants, they are adamant on their position for only picking jobs from whats offered and that there is no other choice for job selection. Good thing the army lets you choose your job.
>>
>>31728550
All I hear from LEO is to not get a CJ degree too. But when the majority of actual LEO people have CJ degrees. Im talking all ages and exp, then that must mean something? Its not like their not getting hired. Otherwise they wouldnt be getting these background checks. I have seen only one guy with a poetry degree, wonder why he got hired?
>>
>>31728579
>But when the majority of actual LEO people have CJ degrees. Im talking all ages and exp, then that must mean something?

That people who got told to get an education or get out are skating by going through CJ programs?
>>
>>31728588
These are people going into other agency LEO positions usually GS9 and above. Like I said, I dont do checks on FBI specifically, since they have their own guys specifically for agent positions. Most of the guys leaving FBI are doing so for money or work location. I havnt processed anyone who got downsized, because that shit doesnt happen nowadays. Since everyone has a minimum of a bachelors degree. From what i heard, pre 2004 didnt have a set education requirement. They took exp alone. But now, the degree is required.

look at >>31728546
job link and see the edu requirement if lacking exp
>>
>>31728546
Not anon you're responding to.

Ya thats called bluffing. All you had to say was fine black list me then, im going next door to the army recruiter. They would have changed their tune very quickly. Btw stop bragging about "high scoring", I got a 95 and no one cares.

Because the army has at least the same and frequently better everything than the marines, and more opportunities for advancement. Once you're a marine, you're always a marine, but once you go army, there's no limit to the cool shit you can do
>>
>Most of the jobs I want to enter require me to be in for several years as an enlisted to make the necessary rank
>The officer equivalent you can enter immediately
>I'll be done with my degree in 2 years

If I go enlisted I can do what I want after a few years of doing something that I don't want to do. If I go officer I can do what I want for a few years until I either get promoted out of field work or bumped out for bad OPRs due to too much field work and not enough officer-ing.

It's like the opposite of the cat-bird seat.
>>
>>31730243
What jobs?
>>
>>31730584

HUMINT/CI.

Don't say 35M, that isn't the kind of HUMINT I mean.
>>
>>31730662
How are you going to get an intel slot for officer without rotc or academy? Unless you do have one of those. I assume youre wanting army since they do the majority of humint.

You know you could just do 35M(I know you said not 35M), then 35L after 2 years or 1 year after DLI if they still make 35M do that.

But i still recommend getting degree first over option of enlisting. I know alot of guys say you can get degree while in, but thats if you actually have the time to do it. Between the daily bullshit and random bullshit that can occur during the workday or weekend, you might not even be able to take one class let alone attend enough courses for half time. There was one year I wasnt even allowed to use tuition assistance through army because our command banned it from our unit due to people ditching work assignments to attend class.

Get the degree first, this way, when you get out and apply for a civ job youll already have the minimum requirement for whatever gov job you want.

Getting Intel through OCS in the Air Force isn't hard because the hot AFSCs are rated.

35L takes ~2 years to get into through army, which is the time I have left on my degree anyway. The only faster option is marines which lets me hit e4 1 year in and immediately drop a packet. I'm not hot enough on either of those to do them.

Soooooo much sometimes.

All you guys here in /MEG/ are likely super focused on basic/boot, where your access to stuff like /k/ will be cut off. But you all have to realize that while basic training seems like a fucking big deal right now, it is a very small part of being in the military.

Once you're in a unit, you go back to your permanent house or barracks (which is more like a shitty apartment not a line of green blanketed cots as most people imagine). You can shitpost as much as you want on your off time.

And you will almost certainly have situations where you are stuck at work, but only because you are waiting on orders and have nothing to do. In such times, you whip out the phone and hop on 4chan.

Well, I think there are laws against firing people for deploying/going to school.

Though I've never seen a person lose their job, they often lose money if their employer doesn't pay them at all for the period that they are deployed/at school.
>>
>>31735041

Not only is it illegal to fire someone for joining the military, you have to give them their job back for up to 5 years, and you can't count it against their benefits and seniority.

More people with CJ degrees are applying in raw numbers. That doesn't mean you're more likely to get hired by virtue of simply having a CJ degree and having one does nothing to make you stand out as an applicant.

FLETC can teach you to be a cop, what's more important is what else you can bring to the table (languages, foreign travel, different education experiences etc.)

>>31737638
>No, these are people already hired.

This does not contradict what I've said.

Hypothetical:

You have 900 applicants with CJ degrees and 100 applicants with other degrees and they all apply for the same position.

400 CJ degrees get hired and 100 other degrees get hired.

You can't then say having a CJ degree increases your chance of being hired just because the majority of those hired have CJ degrees you're ignoring that CJ degrees are heavily saturated among applicants.

In this situation CJ degrees have a less than 50% hire rate while other degrees have 100%.
>>
>>31737829
These are people already hired....aka im re investigating them for their clearances. I work in north VA which is why the salary is higher. When i started out as a gs7 my salary is 63k a year in san francisco. So idk why you think the wages are too high? Do you live in a low cost of living area?
>>
>>31737927

>I work in north VA which is why the salary is higher

NOVA GS-9 pay scale, step 10 (IE, you've been a 9 for-fucking-ever and maxed out) is just over $69,000/yr. San Francisco (literally the highest adjustment) doesn't break 75k until they're absolutely maxed. That's a shit-tier job considering you're ten years in at that point.

This is public information. Most GS-9s make less than 65k, even in the very expensive areas. Quit your bullshit.
>>
>>31736913
I can handle that. go on.
