Is it true that "banter" is banned in the military now?

I expected the MOSs with too many females would be anti-banter, but combat arms should be safe, right? I can say "grab her by the pussy" and not end up wasting my time standing in front of a midget 1SG, right?

I need a TS unfortunately.... My understanding was that they would ship you to basic and then make you wait around, I haven't ever heard of a ship date being pushed back before. I also did an interview with an investigator like 2 or 3 months ago (can't remember exactly when) already.

on the tail end of my deployment when the taliban had finally decided we were too big a deal to fuck with and were waiting for the next rotation of green dicks to fuck up, it was pretty quiet. quiet enough that generals started visiting our bumfuck little COP and with a group of them came a contingent of air force bitch boys. they gingerly stepped out their humvees with their carry-handle M16's pointing every which way, helmets tilted to the side and looking like a bunch soup sandwiches. we made them pull guard and you could see the fear in their eyes as they came up to relieve you. i caught an air fag E-5 sleeping on guard and reamed him the fuck out as an E-4 and he just sat there and took it. do you want to be a fucking bitch boy or do you want to do a real job?

Need a degree and good test scores to fly from OCS. Best one really depends on what you want to do. Both Navy and AF care for their pilots, AF more so I'd assume.

Ideally, I'd like to fly an air superiority fighter. Naval aviation looks incredibly fun at its best, but the AF might be overall better. I take it the consensus is to stay away from Marine aviation

Marine """aviation""" won't have you flying much. Their wing department is in tatters

Former Navyfag here,

I did a stretch from 2008 to 2012. I always had it in the back of my head that I could do something with SOF, but never took the chance. Now I'm in my late 20's and I keep having thoughts about joining the Army and trying out for Rangers before I'm too old. I think that I'd make a decent Ranger, and that I'd enjoy the kind of work they do, but I'm not sure. Even though I know what day to day life in the military is like and am way more mature, I'm worried that I'm still affected by the same kind of false confidence displayed by the typical kid who goes Option 40, 18x, or SEAL Challenge, and thinks it's going to be like CoD.

Can /k/, possibly Ricky if he's here, give me any advice?
>>
>>31610909
Have you met the CO or interfaced with him at all about this? What rate are you applying for? If it's something in high demand, I'd wager they'll over look it. Especially if it's a misdemeanor.

Are you me? I was navy from 2010-2014. Im 25 now and im getting an 18x. If you want it go for it. You in great shape? What rate were you?
>>
>>31611817
>What rate were you?

I was IT. I've wanted to go SEAL ever since I was like 14, but I severely overestimated my physical capabilities back then. Not to mention I was only a basic swimmer and thought that I could keep up with them.

>You in great shape?
I'm at good and on the cusp of great. I realized what a lazy, skinnyfat piece of shit I was in the Navy, and started working out pretty hard after I got out. I can do 20 dead hang pull ups and 85-95 push ups and sit ups. My worst thing is running, but I'm not bad at it, just not great. I have ok endurance (ran a half marathon last year), but I'm not very fast. I feel like if I committed to the idea of enlisting again, I'd be even more motivated to tighten up my fitness routine even more.

>im getting an 18x.

Good for you bro. I actually think I have an aptitude for SF (I'm good at learning languages and like interfacing with and becoming part of other cultures), but I wouldn't want to go 18x. The idea that you could complete every event as SFAS and still not be selected without being given the reason why bugs the hell out me.

Do you get to keep any rank jumping over to the Army after being out a couple years? I was an E-5 when I got out, and it'd be nice to keep it if I going to get back in.
>>
>>31611997
>I was an E-5 when I got out, and it'd be nice to keep it if I going to get back in.
Same.
The way my recruiter explained it is once we get all paperwork back from the navy and released from IRR I will retake teh ASVAB now the PICAT and the OPAT and submit all my info in one huge packet to USAREC and they will decide what happens. As in can I stay an E-5 or get busted to E-4. I honestly just want the contract more than anything so im fine eitehr way but staying E-5 would be sweet jsut to get the pay the whole time im in training.

You thinking Rangers than or going back navy and trying for Seal? With that being said i dont know exactly if Rangers straight up is open to prior service. I know for a fact 18x is which is why i went for it. Theres a marine going 18x as well in my station.
>>
>>31612163
>You thinking Rangers than or going back navy and trying for Seal?

Rangers. As good a shape as I'm in now, I don't think I'll ever be a good enough swimmer to ever be a SEAL.

>With that being said i dont know exactly if Rangers straight up is open to prior service. I know for a fact 18x is which is why i went for it.

That's fine. I'm just spitballing at this point.

>. I honestly just want the contract more than anything so im fine eitehr way but staying E-5 would be sweet jsut to get the pay the whole time im in training.

E-4 pay during training wouldn't be terrible either, but I know what you're saying. On the bright side though, if do manage to complete the Q Course, you'll make E-5 and 6 easy as pie.
>>
>>31612225

>>
>>31612348
Not an expert, but I'd say 1 long distance, slow paced run (3-6 miles at a 10 min/mile pace) per week along with 2 runs of interval style training where you sprint or run at a quick pace for a set distance or time followed by walking recovery for for half that distance or double that time.

Also, don't feel bad or ashamed if you have to stop and walk for a minute or two of recovery during your long runs. A short period of recovery to get you breathing back under control doesn't negate the training you're doing.

>>31612346
I'm a Navyfag, but as I understand it being 311 is a shitty idea. Unless we end up going to war, you're gonna spend most of your time washing rocks and waiting for something to happen. Advancement is garbage because the Corps is lousy with you, and your job prospects when you get out are security guard or security guard. I've heard some ex-311's can get work with a PMC, but I don't know how true it is, and I'd personally doubt it because, like I said, if we're at peace the entire time you're in you're going to be green, and who wants that?

how the fuck can you have a 3.5 GPA and only get a 91 GT? in the Army if you get to your unit and they see you have a GT of less than 100 you have to go to FAST class to get your GT score up.

Wow thats nutz. As if the firefight isnt enough but theres IEDs going off too. How often would you say stuff like that happens over there? Like is it still crazy as fuck?

Nothing is really crazy as fuck. This was during a huge operation. They were driving, took fire from their flank, dismounted. He took the lead, hot on the dudes ass. Big army dudes are relatively safe besides the frequent IED's outside of FOBs and IDF.

Without going into detail as to what he was going thru in his last moments, I'l lsay he could have had a better shot at surviving if there hadn't been a DshKa on the hill shooting at the medevac bird. Took the AC130 and Apaches a minute to find him.

OSUT may vary by company. You could end up with a crazy ass company, you could end up with one that's test running for future female infantry.

Garrison's not bad, sit around with a study guide and take every opportunity you can to learn infantry tasks and get involved with the platoon both on and off duty. I was in a leadership position within 3 months. Garrison is what you make of it more than anything.

Pic unrelated.
>>
>>31616292
Yeah you will end up sitting around a lot. One of the team guys here spent about 2 years floating till he got into his team. There's a lot of schools and training to go through till you're actually SF.

If you aren't 100% sure you will get your long tab, don't go 18X. If you fail or wash out of 18X the army will sit you at Fort Bragg for a few months before it gives you new AIT orders and you'll become a POG.

It's happened to my buddies, and it'll probably happen to you if you don't make it thru SFAS.

There's just a lot of shit you'll do, you'll train for months on end leading up to and during your time in the SF. I don't know much else to tell you, man. I can tell you that the last number in your ODA is your team number and that will designate whether you're light SF, mech SF, dive team, HALO, etc. and if you fail the school they send you to you'll either get fucked over hard or if you're lucky they'll keep you around till you can do it again.

Never said that, im saying theres another 11b who posts here and he wants to join batt.
>>
>>31616695
I've met a lot of old CAG dudes here, most of them are civilian and employed by contractors.

I talked to the SF guys about CAG while I was in the TOC for a bit. It's some shit like 6 months of training, which is actually less than SF training. Pretty much anyone can go CAG they just have to get slotted for it. That being said you gotta be somewhere preferably in Ranger Batt or SF to get a chance. CAG practices mag changes, dry fires, clearing specific rooms with a million different setups all mothafuckin day for hours before missions.
They are probably the best shots on this planet though.
>>
>>31616730
Thats my point though, it sound like its awesome. So im wondering are there any downsides at all? Like why isnt every SF guy and ranger trying to go for it? Or are they?
>>
>>31616763
I don't know. Personal preference for some of them maybe.
>>
>>31616769
>Personal preference for some of them maybe.
But what is it that they dont like about it? Thats what im getting at. Is it too much time away from family? Constant killing? I dont even know how thatd be different from SF though.
>>
>>31616865
It's completely different. CAG's objective is to save hostages. SF is to train the locals and fugg shit up.

SF guys? They do fucking anything...fuck man. I asked a Bravo when I first got here what the longest burst he fired from a minigun was, he told me 25 fucking seconds. Holy shit man. Not to mention being here with them and seeing how they work on mission, it's way different than people imagine.

There's something seriously awesome about watching these fucking dudes work, especially from live feeds from drones providing overwatch. Watched a mass group of 150+ ANSF / Rangers / SF get together after they hit the ground, and 2 12 man teams just slowly and steadily trickled off the sides of the cluster fucked. Looked almost robot the way they did it. These guys love each other like family and they are fucking amazing.
>>
>>31616962
All that sounds amazing and i believe it all. Doesnt CAG fuck shit up as well though???
Cant they do even more???
>>
>>31616730
Saying that their training is less than SF doesn't really do it justice. SF spend a significant portion of their training on foreign languages and customs training. CAG is just straight up batman shit
>>
>>31617026

>>31617099

>>31617116
>It's harder to get into, but they can't do each other's jobs.
Again, see what i said above. I realize they are different. But since CAG is more secretive and all that jazz i feel like they could get away with way more than SF.

>>
>>31617326
I had another anon tell me officers could apply for a MOS. Although I probably misinterpreted what he was saying.

So how is the selection done?
For example, if I said I spoke fluent Arabic would that change what would be open to me as an officer?
>>
>>31617367

A language won't open up more basic branches, but it can give you opportunities down the line.

You basically put together a branch "wish list" and then get assigned a branch based on how you rank against your classmates. 4.0 GPA and a PT stud with extracurriculars? You will probably get active duty with your first or second pick. Mediocre candidate? You might get one of your picks if it isn't a popular branch. Bottom of the barrel? You won't get active duty, and you'll get whatever is left.

There are some exceptions. Cyber has a selection process and wants relevant experience, for instance.

>>

You still go through OSUT, but the demand for infantry is at an all time low so "needs of the Army" doesn't mean SF failures go infantry automatically anymore.

This. There are non shooter slots in CAG and they actively recruit. I was intel and got an email about applying and so did a few other intel people I knew.
>>
>>31617591
I was told millionaires couldn't be enlisted because they were more difficult to subjugate. The lack of money is what gives an officer power over an enlistedfag.
>>
>>31617595
That varies from year to year. Generally infantry has been the most in-demand, but it is also the largest. Political factors also play a part. IE, if you're black and one branch really needs diversity, you could get sent there.

>There's a chapter you can use for it, but it isn't automatic.

CHAPTER 5-3: SECRETARIAL PLENARY AUTHORITY (“ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY”)

This provision of AR 635-200 provides for those soldiers who desire to leave active duty but who do not qualify under any other provision of AR 635-200. Recent guidance (MILPER Message NR 97-095) emphasizes that requests under this provision will not be approved unless discharge is clearly “in the best interests of the Army,” not necessarily in the best interests of the soldier. Individual requests which serve only the interest of the soldier - particularly those involving soldiers with critical military skills or bonus recipients - will not be approved except under exceptional circumstances. Requests for separation more than three months before ETS normally will be disapproved.

Lol

That and really after working in the IC for awhile being a cool guy operator in the sense of being a pipe hitter trigger puller becomes far less appealing than continuing to work in the IC. At least in my experience.

When I was 18-19 and dumb, yeah I wanted to reclass to 11x or put in an SFAS packet. Once I had worked in the IC awhile I found out not only was I good at it, I liked it, but it was more important than being a trigger puller if you can do it.

I'm in the Navy, but still in schooling.

The officer vs enlisted question depends on what you have done and what you want to do.

So, what have you done, and what do you want to do?

As a former enlisted Navyfag, I'd recommend going officer just for the money. An O-1 made more than twice what I did in base pay as an E-5 with 4 years of service, and it only went up from there. That said, I don't really know what officer life is like. It seems like there's a lot more bullshit politics to play at that level.

>What are the negatives to enlisting Air Force vs enlisting Army?

You get shit from other people who enlisted in the Army to do probably the exact same MOS you have but try to talk shit like they are combat arms.

My experience as enlisted in the Army was that everything Air Force is nicer and people who make fun of them for being pussies or whatever are jelly as fuck. When I did that CENTCOM class I posted about earlier I stayed in a hotel ran by the Air Force on Macdill. Nicest military housing I ever stayed in. Nicest military gym, everything was nice. It was the same when I was on JBLM/Fort Lewis for awhile. We would go over to the Air Force side since we were close to get food from the hospital DFAC instead of going back to where we were put up in some shitty old MP barracks eating out of their garbage chow hall (they literally had rotting food being served).

The guys who were in Qatar while we were in Iraq were around mostly Air Force people living the "deployed" Air Force life.

I forgot to add: there is a lot of friendly ribbing and banter and shit. But there is a difference between that and actually talking shit.

An infantryman who sat on a COP getting shot at all the time and going on patrols and making contact with the Taliban is going to be salty as fuck over how POGs spend their deployments mostly (if at all) not doing those things. That's different than some supply choad or generator mechanic talking shit.

And sometimes the banter will be had when you can tell the Air Force guy is insecure about it.

In USAF they're starting to bring back enlisted pilots
but the slots for that are rare and standardized test scores + fitness +other evaluations are probably going to be through the roof.

If you have, or are currently working for, a bachelor's degree, consider AFROTC.

Not that guy, but what options do you have once you have your degree?
>>
>>31623332
If you complete both the AFROTC program and your degree program, then you get commissioned as a 2LT. Your class rank and selection board results, and AFOQT (basically GPA, how you get along with people, and officer qualifying test) determine what you get assigned to. The ideal is a pilot slot.

If you ALREADY have a bachelor's degree, OTS is the best option, but getting in is highly dependent on AFOQT scores - and even then it's tough, since there are more AFROTC slots than OTS slots.

In college and too late to join ROTC. I'm an EE major with a roughly 3.5 GPA, in good shape. Only work experience is in a research lab on campus. Not really in any relevant extra curricular activities except an engineering mentorship group

I'm mostly worried about getting letters of rec as stupid as that might sound.

I can run a 6:15 mile and am pretty good with the other physical parts. Guess I'll go ask about taking the AFOQT and other ones
>>
>>31623559
The AFOQT is (kind of) like the GRE or SAT, just making sure you have high-school level education

It's not silly, letters of recommendation are also a part of OTS/OCS selection. If there are professors that know you well as a person it's worth asking for a rec.

Also try volunteering (if you have time) at some ROTC organizations/clubs that include civilians.
>>

Damn since there is like infinite ROTC questions today I might as well ask mines...

Can I ROTC as a transfer student?

(going in as a junior)

And would they take me with a 2.7 GPA from CC

(I promise i'll do my best with a clean slate ;) )
>>
>>31623893
You'd need to contact them before you go. ROTC takes two years and you'd need to go to a program over the summer before your first year to make up for the two prep years normally done
>>
What's the quality of life difference between the navy and the air force? Which one will fuck me the least?
>>
>>31623920
Oh nice, good advice. I suppose I will contact them as soon as I decide which school to go to. I can probably do ROTC here in my neighborhood over the summer, you think? that way I don't have to go far (to uni and take it there).

Any thoughts on whether they'd disqualify me according to my transfer GPA? (I fucked up early on and then I got serious, but transferring to a uni gets me a clean slate which I have no doubt I will do well in. major is EE)
>>
>>31623975
The summer thing will be at a base and everything related to moving to that and so on would be taken care of
>>
>>31623830
By all means talk to him. It's too late to join ROTC but volunteering with them and expressing interest is definitely good.

>>
>>31624021
As an example, Air Force ROTC has a club called Silver Wings which is open to both cadets and civilians. If your nearest ROTC detachment doesn't have a club chapter open to civilians you can always ask them if there's anything you can do to participate in extracurriculars.
>>
>>31624115
Intense ROTC means you go to summer training to make up for missed first 2 years.

You'll also be catching up in terms of lifestyle, D&C, and things like that
>>
>>31624115
Well
Generally enrollment has been low due to more liberal sentiment, but it's been rising in a few places.

A good starting package is good grades, sandardized test scores, and be able to hold a decent conversation.

If they ask for documents, just provide those documents and nothing else, quality and efficiency is great but so is practicality.

Should I go in as a freshman or wait until my junior year? I really want to do it, but I don't know if that's a good idea to wait.

Freshman year would be the wisest choice
The program won't be thrust upon you all at once, and there is less catch-up to do. A lot of junior allocations need to do a LOT of work to catch up, and still be competitive in normal academics.

Is US military pay as shit as the charts make it look? Just by the pay charts (without accounting for potential benefits or bonuses), a W1 with ten years of service makes less/month than a canuck Cpl Spec with six, even with our shit dollar.

Is there a separate chart for specialists I should be looking at? Do you get bonuses based on specific qualifications?

>>
>>31629419

There is definitely a wish list you can fill out. This wish list is then promptly shredded and used as mulch for the local shrubs.

If it's a cool post that people recommend, everyone else wants to go there too. Europe, Hawaii, Carson (in Colorado), and Lewis (in Washington state) are all frequently cited as being awesome. San Antonio is pretty nice (TX is crazy military friendly) as well. Alaska and Korea are awesome if that kind of life is what you're into, and they are a little easier to get since not everyone wants them.

Honestly the best assignments are ones that you will never hear about. Tiny Army posts scattered all around the country and the world. Embassies, weapons research posts, NATO assignments, coolguy support elements, echelons-above-god (intel agencies, Pentagon) etc. Everywhere you find a US government presence, there are probably a couple uniformed billets. You probably won't get a shot at any of those as a fresh 11X, but it is something to look into later in your career.
