Yeah. All I really know about nuke is that you want to kill yourself but you make bank, and I don't know much about intel.
>>
>>31580590
>you make bank
Only if you get out or if you stay in for long term. If you only plan on doing your 6 and gettting out then nuke is a horrible decision unless you really like that type of work.

Intel is a job you will actually enjoy doing and has near as fast advancement and bonuses plus good prospects after you get out.

Why are enlisted men portrayed as simpletons in every movie?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUULFJ_I048

Its even worse when you watch any film in the 1950s, the enlisted are literally yokels with cartoon voices while the officers are just laying pipe on whatever hot actress was cast.

You've been meme'd on, son. Nukes work harder than most jobs and don't make that much more while they're in. When they're out, they have good job prospects but so do a bunch of other military jobs.

If you actually have a passion for the field, do it. If you just want money, there are better options.

Well, because it's a meme, basically. up until about 1980-1984, the whole modern idea of "professional military" wasn't. The force that went in for Gulf91 was utterly and completely different than Vietnam. Even then, Gulf91 looks kinda bush league to what we fielded in GWOT. However, the media didn't really get the message, so they still carry over things they think they learned from Vietnam coverage to the modern force.

However, it's also partially true. Take a bunch of 18-25 year old dudes, force officers to cover pretty much all of their normal responsibilities except "Show up here at [time] and follow directions", then give them $1500-2000 a month plus extras. Add on top of that the bonds you make with the other guys in your unit... shit, the early days of OIF as an 11B was basically a really fucked up frat party occasionally interrupted by warfare.

How hard is boot and the crucible? I've head everything from "very difficult" to "wasn't hard, just uncomfortable."

>>
>>31582761

>>
>>31582794
East or West coast? I'm from the East coast and bootcamp was awful. The stuff you do is pretty cool and borderline fun, but the DIs don't fuck around. I got hit pretty regularly. Not love slaps, like closed fist, in the ribs, all the time. Now with all these hazing claims it's probably much easier.

The crucible was a blur. I never had an issue humping - I can't run for shit though - so I didn't really have a problem. The last hike you stop every 3 miles or so for about 10 minutes which made it a joke. Your pack will weigh about 100 lbs though.

As far as SOI, I don't know. Combat training for POGs was about a month, and it was the most fun I had in the military. You shoot M203s and M240s and throw grenades and stuff. Super fun.

My MOS school was at Lackland AFB in Texas and the detachment was probably 40 Marines strong so you felt like you had the biggest dick there. It was so much fun. The Air Force does their basic training there and they no shit get to eat dominos, popeyes, subway, and starbucks every weekend. Every. Weekend.

>if i go active navy, does that mean im at sea for 4 years or what?
Not necessarily. Depends on your orders/rate. If yuo do get stationed on a ship then yes you are attached to said ship for a SEA tour. The length depends on your rate. Some are only 3 years then they rotate while some are 5.
Note this is different than your enlistment length.
Where ever the ship goes, you go.
>>
>>31585192
>different than your enlistment length

The old line about "I thought boot was hard before I got to SOI. I thought SOI was hard before I got to fleet, etc etc".

Boot camp is hard because it's all completely new and intimidating. Unless you're a complete fuckup, you'll get completely used to it in about three or four weeks.

>If the sea tour is longer than your enlistment then you don't go back home on time?
No. they are separate and independent of eachother.
Whatever you enlist for is set in stone and solid. If you enlist for 4 years you are out in 4 99.99% of the time bottom line end of story.

SEA/SHORE is an order rotation. It starts once you show up to said ship. From the day you check on board to your ship your timer starts counting down till when you rotate off and choose SHORE orders. Again, the length is dependent on your rate. 3-5 years. Its like this because SEA duty, aka being on a ship, is very tough and takes a strain on family life and so on. So you cant be on it forever.

Note, some things are considered type 2 sea duty and count as SEA time but you arent on a ship all the time.

Now you actually could stay on SEA if you wanted to, you can extend and keep ship hoping and getting bonuses for it. But most people will never do this.

SHORE duty is viewed as a break basically, its usually 3 years. During that time you can be with family and get a degree easily or whatever. Then when that time is up you go back to SEA orders and choose another ship.

Note, some rate have a different rotation method. OCONUS/INCONUS.
It just matters if they are in US or outside it. So you could be on shore duty in South Korea then shore duty in California back to back cause ones out and ones in. These are usually intel rates.

Anyway, dont be afraid of being old, you get the GI bill once your out and can re-invent yourself how ever you want to once youre out. The Navys a tough but good gig. Just choose a good rate youll like and youll be fine.

if you're onconus, what can you do when you're out of work?

like, your example of south korea for instance. there's so much free time - how do you spend it if you don't know the language?

do you have to live on ship too?

You mean when the days work is done? Anything you want for the most part. Go to your room. Work out. Go out into the town. Eat and drink.

>how do you spend it if you don't know the language?
You arent the first american there obviously. Most places around bases, and in general desu have English speaking people working there and signs in English as well. Also not a bad idea to learn it if youre gonna be there for 3 years.

>do you have to live on ship too?
If youre on a ship its not OCONUS its SEA over seas. And usually no. People on ships 99% of the time get a barracks room. It aint great but its better than the ship. Once you make rank. usually E-5, you can get an apartment out in town.

final questions - if I haven't earned my degree yet (bachelors, earning it in December), should I hold off on applying?

i feel like the enlisted guys aren't going to put me in for officer consideration.

also, how hard is it to get to go to japan? idk why that's such a popular destination, and i hate that it's so common, but i'd like to go.

in any case, i'm hoping for an intel position. i'm graduating with a degree in forensic psych.

>>
>>31586224

>i feel like the enlisted guys aren't going to put me in for officer consideration.

That's not how this works. You don't just show up and get put in a track. If you want to be an officer you apply through a different recruiter and attempt selection for officer school. It isn't just something that happens when you enlist with a degree.

Japan is popular because a lot of weebs like yourself join the military in search of adventure and waifus in the land of the rising sun.

Intel is generally fairly competitive, in every branch.

You submit the paperwork with ADMIN you your division isnt really involved, but if your goal is to be an officer you might as well wait until December. But there are other ways to be different types of officers once in.

>also, how hard is it to get to go to japan?
Easy as fuck. Ships there are Forward deployed, means they deploy and are at sea constantly cause its so close to North Korea and China. Orders there are usually on 3 years cause its considered tough. If you wanna go theyll send you no problem.

You're probably going to go into a fucked up unit.

Then if you want out of that unit you need to find a receiving unit willing to take you and a way to get there for drill.

If you want to go active you need to do a 368 conditional release. You need your CoC to sign it. Which they require you to be in the unit for a certain amount of time before they will. And then they still probably won't.

After a few months, or more likely while you're in TRADOC, you'll decide you want to be active duty.

If you actually wanna go 18x you need to seriously decide on it. This isnt something to do on a whim. Most people spend 6months-1year preparing depending on how in shape they are. You better be strong and fast and not a pussy.

Yep. Usually only a TRADOC thing, but units can get stupid about collective punishment as well.

>I'm honestly scared everyone is going to hate me when I fuck something up,

Collective punishment doesn't usually happen because you don't know how to do something or otherwise something is out of your control etc.

It happens when you're a shit bag and you do something that you were explicitly told not to do by the kill hats, you're in general a shit bag and don't wake up for fire guard or don't make sure the next shift is awake, get caught trying to skate etc.

>which I'm sure will happen. Wut do?

Don't be a shit bag. Collective punishment is going to happen, you're going to get smoked (they started calling it CAPEing, Corrective Action through Physical Exercise, a couple of years ago), just do what you're told and learn.

>Does anybody know about the process of getting a security clearance. Joining army if that makes a difference
>>31585322

You fill out an SF86 while you're at MEPS.

You won't find out anything unless something comes up. You'll go through basic, get to AIT, and then different things can happen. I had an issue with a past employer (I walked out, they said I was fired) and the investigator showed up to my company at Huachuca to ask about it and it was never an issue again (for TS/SCI). One of the guys in a class a few before mine was a hold over because his clearance investigation hit a hiccup and he ended up being at the company so long waiting for his clearance (about a year when I was there) he was treated like permanent party and drove kids around to medical appointments and shit in the GSA van and worked in the company supply room.
>>
Right, so I'm in the process of enlisting with the CG.

I feel like my recruiter is bullshitting me.

At this point, I'll either enlist as an MK, or forget all that and take a job that's really close to home and matches my original career plan perfectly.

I told him that I may end up dropping the CG altogether if I actually manage to get this job, and he chimes in with some not-quite-promises.

Apparently the CG is hurting for MKs real bad, so they're offering $5k enlistment bonuses and a guaranteed slot in A-school immediately following (or as close to as possible) boot camp. This would theoretically put me at being an E3 or or an E4 within my first year.

How likely is it that this is actually true? I'm skeptical.
>>
>>31585325
>35L

Not an initial entry MOS anymore. Which means you need to be enlisted already in another MOS and an E4(p), or prior enlisted who just got out and can be in a position to get your E5 around the time you finish at CISAC.
>>
>>31586466
>Will I have the chance down the line for cool guy shit to do?

This is a question with so many potential answers based on variables that you haven't even encountered yet.

It depends is the best answer.

1. Your CoC
2. How good a soldier you are (too good and unit won't want to lose you though they can't technically block you from dropping an SF packet, if you're not you won't get a chance to go to a lot of military schools like BAC, Air Assault etc.)
3. Where you are in your career
4. What your MOS actually does while deployed
5. You might not even make it through TRADOC

The safest assumption you can make is that whatever initial MOS you choose you will be doing the most boring version of that for your entire first enlistment. It might even turn out that you're good at it and it is fulfilling. I was a 19 year old dum-dum at one time and wanted to do cool guy stuff. When I got around to actually deploying and doing my job it turned out I was good at it, enjoyed it, and I was doing something far more important than living my teenage operator fantasies.
>>
>>31586628
>I lived in other countries for several years and have family in various ones. Will that fuck me over down the road?

>>

>>
>>31587233

>Not realizing that 99% of your enlisted time will be spent actively avoiding putting on your dress uniform.

Nobody wears that shit unless they absolutely have to, it's expensive and fragile. Civilians get the impression that servicemembers actually wear their dress uniform because half the time civilians interact with servicemembers it is the one day a year that they're dressed up for a ball or somefuck.
>>

Doesn't sound that great, since this is pretty much the deal every other branch gets on day day of the week. A small bonus, job training right after your basic school, and E-3 within a year.

Bruh, boot has a 85%+ pass rate, and a good portion of those who don't pass just quit immediately because they are literally teenagers who miss their mommies.

It isn't a selection, it isn't some great test of worthiness, it's a fitness and military etiquette crash course designed to turn pudgy civilians into halfway trainable military recruits.

As a 15 year old I was convicted of Contempt for disobeying a Judge. I was dragged in front of the court by my mom with a P.I.N.S petition, basically a paper that says I'm not a good boy and she needs a Judge to assist in controlling me. The entire thing was handled in Family Court. I was sentenced to 1 year.

When I was 19 I was arrested for everything but murder when I tried to cross a bridge closed for construction into NJ. Big fight with many police officers. They took me to a hospital and I slipped out of the handcuffs and pulled out an IV (was dehydrated). Got beaten down and, technically, arrested again, inside the hospital.

Went to a nearby correctional facility for a few months, charges were dropped but I had to have these people come by my house for (((counseling))).

It depends on if the job you're doing requires a Top Secret. Most jobs don't, but many of them require it later down the line in order to get into certain billets/positions. I think you'd be better off being honest if they're as obvious as you say they are. Just say you're over it and doesn't affect you anymore.

MEPS will definitely refer you to a psychiatrist either way. Who will send a report to MEPS, then MEPS will determine if you're DQ'd or not. If you're DQ'd, a waiver could be a last shot. With peacetime and a lot of downsizing going on, the military is picky. If I remember correctly, clinical depression (in the last 6 years I think) and suicidal thoughts (at any point in life) are instant-DQ.

Active Duty AF fag here 2w051 (munitions)

Thinking about switching branches to the Army using the Blue to Green program but the army recruiter in my area told me they would most likely stick me with Ordinance instead of allowing me to cross train into 91F (small arms/artillery repair) like I want to. Just made E5 this year so im weighing my options about staying in the AF or trying to get into the BtG program.
what does /k/ recommend?

Navy Reserve works a little differently, it tends to be a lot more flexible when it comes to things like that. The downside compared to other reserve branches is that it's easy to get stuck at a drill site where there is literally nothing to do, and requires travel to actually get to work. The travel can be fantastic, though.

basic/boot are nothing compared to the abuse you're going to suffer at the hands of the people you're going to be going into combat with. you kind of fall through the cracks a bit in initial training -- if you can just avoid fucking up in a way that draws attention to yourself, you can get away with a lot of shit.

not so much when you get to your unit. you are going to be expected to know everything from 9-lines to cyclic rates of fire on all weapons systems and everything in between. that's if your unit's any good, anyway.

a lot of people expect basic to be the hard part but for infantry dicks, that's 99% of the time not the case.

also FTX, 26 mile rucks monthly, etc.

>>
>>31594490

>>
>>31594403
>>31594490

The true benefit of the military is recognizing the opportunity to accrue skills and expertise that translate into the civilian market while also getting paid generously to learn/exercise them. The "wars" are winding down for now and any new arrivals who are smart would recognize those facts and pick a non-combat job.

Every year you spend in the active military is a year that you're not doing anything in the civilian sector. People should be using that time wisely. Nobody can realistically retire at 40 without having assloads of money, and disability isnt going to feed families
>>
>>31594538

you're out immediately my dude.
I had a fucking tiny little scratch papercut near my wirst since I stock boxes for hours at a time. The doctor at meps was lining us up for the duckwalk and all that shit at meps, and she got a look at my arm from like 15 feet away, ran right up to me, grabbed my arm out and looked at it real close, then went back to instructing us on how to do the physical test thing.

One guy had a mole or something on his neck, he got pulled to the side since that wasn't listed on his medical sheet.
>>
>>31600019
when i went into meps in 2008 i was 20 pounds underweight for my height, long stringy unwashed hair all the way down my back and nobody looked at me twice. it was a "look left and cough" affair then i was off to basic with a $36k signing bonus. funny how times change
>>
>>31600060
well its peacetime.
My recruiters weren't giving out waivers for anything, they would not drive anyone that scored under 50 on the asvab practice test, if you looked overweight, you're out of the building and they wont talk to you until you look relatively in shape and healthy.
>>
Any older enlistees here? It's hard to imagine anyone past the age of 28 these days not getting DQ'd instantly from the medical bangups that tend to accumulate.
>>
>>31600290
if you're in good shape, there's no reason you shouldn't be eligible. there is """""ageism""""" as with many other youth-focused vocations, but the army is -- in theory -- a pretty strict meritocracy. if you can convince a recruiter by virtue of your physical shape and ASVAB scores that you would be worth shuttling over to MEPS, there's no reason he wouldn't. just don't shuffle in overweight, slovenly, smelling like beer and score worse than a highschool dropout on your ASVAB. that would have worked during the troop surge but it probably doesn't anymore, like the poster right above you said.
>>
>>31600290

How do the investigators find interviewees for security clearances? Is it from what you give them or do they delve into your life themselves?
>>
>>31600600
Yes
>>
>>31600600
when i was in, i was supposed to have a secret security clearance. i never had to get interviewed, nobody ever brought me in to ask a single question, and when i asked about it at the S shop out of curiosity, they told me most people just got interim clearances without any check at all. this was back in '09 so YMMV
>>
>>31582053
>ive heard BMs in the navy dont even know how to properly moor a boat up.
You would be right, they don't moor boats, they moor ships.

>>31581916
CTN is the best rate in the Navy if you never ever want to see a ship, which you shouldn't. Ship life blows.

Also, you guys realize the Navy doesn't have rates anymore, right? Kek, we are all Petty Officers now.
>>
>>31600600
Depends on the clearance.

I don't think anybody even got interviewed when I got put in for my secret.

TS isn't a joke though, they do sit down interviews with people on your list and you. They're not going to track down people unless they have a reason to, or they'll just kick your shit back.
>>
>>31600705
the biggest things for security clearances are as follows:
>don't be a radical of any denomination
>don't have established ties with radicals of any denomination
>don't be in debt
>don't have skeletons in your closet that you lied about in MEPS, because chances are if they want to find them, they will
>>
>>31600705
My worry is that I literally haven't had friends since high school and that they might think I'm hiding something when I'm just a sperg.
>>
>>31600713
Pretty much, I just put in for my TS and I've got no worries.

Basically if you grew up middle class with no police record you should be fine. There's a lot of info you aren't even required to list if it's before you were 18. Even debt isn't a deal breaker if it's not too bad.

Just don't lie about anything.

where you get started is finding an aspect of national security that interests you. it's such a ludicrously broad subject covering so many different facets that it's almost a non-sequiteur to just state "national security." anti-terrorism, counter-insurgency, cyber-warfare; the list goes on.
>>
>>31600977
Oops, neglected to post this in the OP. I thought I did, and I thought you were taking the piss lmao. It's concerning vulnerabilities to terrorism regarding public transport.

What I'm thinking is this:
>general info about current capabilities
>info about obsolescence

But I have no idea how to go about it. It seems almost too big a project - all I have is an observation about the vulnerabilities that are present in a train track line that is too long, and that some stations are too big for the amount of personnel they have (the train is vital to the country's economy, so we have armed patrols guarding stations and taking the trains at intervals).

Do I have to come up with the budget, etc.? I don't know how the paper should look.
