Set up a bunch of 1l bottles full of water at 50 and 100 yards.

One of them tried to reach a low earth orbit when I hit it. Why would one launch 50ft in the air and the rest of them just kind of jump back a bit and tip over?

The PTR/G3 is the AK of the west, widely distributed to just about anyone HK could sell it to, accurate, rugged, reliable and hilariously cheap to make. Sure you can use it as a club when you run out of ammo and the ergonomics and not anything to write home about. But it has few parts, is easy to maintain and goes boom every time you pull the trigger
>>
>>31597262
is that why you bought one?

>>31597210
its kind of true. PTRs used to be $1000 and you could only get the F model. When the GI came out for sub-$700 tons of poorfags snatched them up and the meme started.

PTR-91: For poorfags who can't spend more than 3 bucks per magazine, if that. Applies especially to buyers of the GI model.
M1A: rifle for Calicucks, fudds, and people who want to live out the THIS IS MY RIFLE THIS IS MY GUN scene from Full Metal Jacket while pacing around in their basement
DSA FAL: Chokes on a little bit of mud, no wonder Rhodesia fizzled out
AR-10 variants: Unstandardized meme rifle who leaves you slaved to the company you bought it from, enjoy your overpriced mags. Only real advantage is being lighter than the previous three. Pussy.
SCAR 17: Everything the AR-10 variants are, except 4x more expensive.

Enjoy your memes.
>>
>>31597426

lol stay away from AR-10's, none of the company's can get their shit together and all want to have proprietary systems. Not to mention at 1200 you are in DPMS territory and all their stuff is either hit or miss

Without the military ensuring that the SR-25 appears in every Call of Duty/Battlefield, people would discover that it is a rather substandard rifle compared to pretty much all its competition, especially for the price they want for it

>>
>>31597916

PTR or DSA

The nice thing about the cold war was the creation of cheap and easy to manufacture battle rifles that are no frills but get the job done. DSA is actually improving their lineup with the Voyager series FAL that is about the same price as a PTR F and have become alone less reliant on parts kits.

The difference in the two come down to preference, the PTR is cheaper but is a heavier rifle with outdated ergonomics, but the rifle is very modular and can be modernize without costing an arm and a leg

DSA on the other hand is a tad more pricey depending on what model you buy, but the ergos are alot better and the rifle itself is lighter but the system isn't very modular and upgrades cost quite a bit

That being said, if you bring up sand tests, if you are in a situation where conditions are complete shit and the extra reliability of the G3 over the FAL is an issue, mud will be the very least of your immediate life problems
>>
>>31598022
>recommends PTR after calling it poorfag gun
>recommends DSA after calling it unreliable
WEW LAD
>>
>>31598071

The DSA Voyager is about the price of the PTR F/SC models, they are both poorfag rifles but that isn't a bad thing

And unless you are going to war in the middle east, the FAL will work for you just fine. People still buy AR-15's despite having weakness to fucking bees
>>
>>31597298
No idea, I mean I knew the PRS stock would add about 3lbs, and the gun itself is about 9lbs unloaded. The GG&G rise is almost a pound, and my Bipod is about another 3 lbs. My Bushnell tactical elite is heavy as hell, but I don't know the exact weight. I guess I'm glad this thing will mainly be a bench gun.

Basically see battle rifle enthusiasts as a spoiled group of brats that get mad when people get toys similar to theirs.

They keep changing the definition to make them appear part of a niche group.

A battle rifle is any semi automatic or select fire rifle that can shoot full power rifle cartridges.

Now they want to change that into MAG FED rifles, it's just bullshit to be honest.

The only problem is whether you should include rifles like pic related. Which are semi auto rifles that fire full powered rifle cartridges but were never used for military purposes.

The thing is there is no real coining authority for the term Battle Rifle. It became to be used by gun writers in the 70s to refer to the post WWII .308 class infantry rifles specifically as a reaction to the newer assault rifles that were coming out.

An argument could be made a garand is a battle rifle, an argument could be made it isn't.

Does a .308 DMR count?
Does an CQC barreled one count?
Does something like an FNAR count?

I admit I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of all firearms ever, but to the best of my knowledge the Garand is the only semi-auto firing a full power rifle cartridge that isn't magazine fed (though IIRC there were variants that did).

>>31603418
Generally speaking most definitions of "battle rifle" only have one thing in common. It fires a full power rifle cartridge. One of the first definitions, about from about 1982, was that a battle rifle
>is a full-powered, full-sized rifle, fires from a locked breech, may or may not utilize a detachable box magazine, and may or may not be capable of fully automatic fire.

There were also similar references going back though not quit as specific a definition.

>>31603531
Only russian stuff I deal with is surplus. I didn't think they would bother with a modern 54R semi-auto.

>>31603491
Well I'd agree as I just go with the "semi-automatic firing a fullsize rifle cartridge".

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2014/09/24/firearms-semantics-battle-rifle-assault-rifle/
http://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/what-is-a-battle-rifle/

Now since I know you won't bother to read them, the short version is that the definition of a battle rifle is completely fabricated. As in, we made it up. Now as you've seen in just this thread a bunch of fucks are arguing about what exactly is a battle rifle. Since the definition is a battle rifle basically varies according to person, and is questionable in the first place, I have as much right to state a Garand (for example) is a battle rifle as any other anon has to state it is not.

Even though "assault rifle" and "battle rifle" are terms coined after the production of the weapons they classify, I think that there are basic requirements for each term.

Assault rifles are chambered in an intermediate cartridge (such as 5.56x45, 5.45x39, 7.62x39, w/ optimum performance within 300m) and fire from a closed bolt. Additionally, they must be select-fire with semi-automatic and either burst or full-automatic settings. It's pretty much a given that they also feed from a detachable magazine. Bear in mind that these weapons naturally favor volume of fire over precision shooting.

Battle rifles, on the other hand, are chambered in full-size cartridges (such as .7.62x51, 7.62x54R, .30-06, 7.92x57, etc.) and were produced at a time when long-range marksmanship (500+m) was more valued. They fire from a closed bolt. As opposed to the bolt-action service rifles that they replaced, they are semi-automatic or perhaps even select-fire. However, I don't think this distinction is necessary because a) the doctrine for which they were developed was more precision-oriented and b) nobody uses full-size cartridges on full-auto unless they're using a GPMG. Because pretty much every weapon that we consider a battle rifle uses detachable mags, we may have to classify the M1 Garand as a proto-battle rifle.

To answer your questions directly, using the definitions above:

1) Yes. The Designated Marksman's Rifle is a classification based on the role of the soldier using it, not a function of the rifle's features. Because pretty much any weapon can be used as a DMR, a DMR in .308 like the SR-25 or M14 is simply a battle rifle being used by a Designated Marksman.

2) Yes. Though a shortened barrel does limit the utility of a battle rifle moreso than an assault rifle, the change is not dramatic enough to warrant reclassification.

3) Yes. The FNAR, RFB, etc have all the features described above in spite of lacking military origins.

TL;DR Yes, yes, and yes.

What are some good resources for building an AR-10? Ive done some googling and much of what i find is out of stock. Discovered Aero Precision and their stuff looks good on paper, anyone have experience with their product? Still a little confused on matching uppers and lowers, as long as they are both DPMS pattern they should fit up perfect, correct?

pretty much

also aero is g2g, not the best but still p good, and they were selling the M5E1 uppers for $500 the other day

also check out APF complete uppers on AIM, again not amazing but plenty good enough for a sub $1k battle rifle

some of them have gaps between lower and upper receiver if they're made by different people
since the 308 has no true blueprint that every manufacturer uses they are all pretty close but not 100%

ex. I think the alexandria pro fab lower has a gap when paired with an aero upper, or the other way around.
>>
>>31606696
Tolerance stacking adds up, even when mating upper and lowers from same mfg. Sets are matched to have that taken out. .308 ARs are not quite as plug and play. You can use otherwise good components and get some slop that can cause accuracy issues that wont seem to be able to get fixed.

Its a fairlly simple affair to get them as sets, and prevents those odd issues. Its generally less of an issue when using KAC pattern receivers, but those are the higher end of the segment. If your looking to get them separately im assuming your looking for a performance:price ratio.

These days your lucky to get what you can find though. Sets that are in stock are the higher end models are generally around $500 for the set and up. Not getting them as a set is not a guarantee of accuracy issues, but its more of a possibility.
>>

It'll just be a fun something to add to the collection. I'm trying to get as many quality funs as I can before the election. I'm not a stranger to long barrels, my favorite AR is a 20in A2, and I have an AR-10 A2 from Armalite on the way right now.

Maybe I should go with the 16in because I'll already have a 20in .308, but I wanna know from guys with more battle rifle experience than I have if a 16in is too obnoxious.
>>
>>31607519
Yeah with an offset mount.
>>
>>31607586

I have a 16inch PTR and really it performs about the same accuracy wise as my 18 inch M1A. But then again I'm not a wannabe sniper who thinks he needs to shoot 800 meters out so a 500-600 meter rifle works fine
>>
>>31607610
Under the boreline is unusual because if shooting over a barrier or something similar, the light can easily become blocked, at the least its going to be taking more impacts.
>>
>>31607653
I double checked this with a friend's mount tested on mine, and the light will have the same bottom edge height as the handguard, and I wouldn't be shooting with the barrel resting directly on anything.

>>31607616

Would firing a 16in kill your ears or no? I live in a fairly urban place. Not a big city, but pretty suburban. I don't need to shoot out to 800 meters or whatever. I just wanna know if the 16in will make me hate my ears.

It is, wiki has it right on the nose, the garand is one of the few exceptions to the "removable magazine" and "military service rifle" and "full cartridge" rule. Normally, they either tick all boxes or they're not a battle rifle. Select fire helps, but it's not necessary.
>>31603491
PSL is not a battle rifle even though it actually does tick those 3 boxes because it's role was not as a basic fighting rifle or meant to be one.
>>31603276
>>31603491
>A battle rifle is any semi automatic or select fire rifle that can shoot full power rifle cartridges.
That would make a lot of fuddy duddy deer and sporter rifles battle rifles based on that alone. There's just no way anybody could be dumb enough to genuinely think they belong in the battle rifle group, except out of spite to piss people off in this thread. No military service(or designed more/less around it) is auto disqualification for the most part.

Yeah, I suppose. Kindof how the thompson reflects it's time when that smg concept was new.
After holding a repro, I'm 90% sure I'll never hold a worse gun in my life. Everything about it just sucked, heavy, opposite of ergonomic, awful controls etc etc.
It's not a fair comparison with a garand, which is far better, but you get the point.

The M14 was bad in Vietnam because it weighed a fuck ton (not very nice for navigating dense jungle) and wood is absolute garbage in a wet environment like that.

But even then, artillery and belt fed weapons and air support were what did the killing. Rifleman just try to pin the bastards down.

Guys, I'm looking for input on a rifle that popped up on armslist.

It's a WWII German Gewehr G43. Comes with ZF4 scope and a mount that is late war production, but serials don't match rifle. Bolt and receiver have matching serials, and the guy says the stock serial is not visible. Stock has been sanded and refinished. He indicated that the blued portions have minor wear, and the rifling is good.

What would be a reasonable price range for the rifle I described? I figure this is technically one of the first iterations of "battle rifles" like the SVT-40.
>>
>>31610949
It should be phosphated, not blued. Sounds pimp-shined; not worth more than $1200 as a shooter.
>>
>>31611031
"Nice original blue metal finish. Rifle has original gray phosphate and blue metal finishes showing light normal wear. "

$1200 happens to be the asking price, thanks for the input.
>>
>>31596723
>>31596951

Fuck, well it looks like my sig 716 has some major teething problems. I upgraded the original adjustable stock with the PRS, and I think that has something to do with the issues I had today, it was ejecting just fine, right around 3-4oclock area, but it was short stroking and failing to feed almost every other shot, even on the high-gas setting. I'm going to have to tinker with this more in order to figure things out.
>>
>>31611063
Stock buffer tube the same length as on the PRS?
Might need a different length buffer, same weight.

>>
>>31611140
Carbine buffer is shorter, but i'm not sure how much. this seems to be a common problem with the 716, apparently since it originally came with a carbine style adjustable stock, the standard 308 buffer and rifle tube that are needed for the prs are the wrong weight. I'll have to see about getting some buffer tube spacers and figuring things out.

Think of the G3 vs FAL debate as AK vs AR. They will both fill the same role but the G3 is a more robust and reliable design (ak) while the FAL is a little more ergonomic but is prone to failure in adverse or dirty conditions (ar).
>>
>>31613400

Its cheap because it was designed to be mass produced with very few parts required. Even though PTR is by themselves in the G3 market, no other battle rifle producer in the U.S can crank out rifles at the same rate
>>
>>31603370
I was under the impression that the term "Battle Rifle" originally referred to service rifles that used a regular rifle cartridge. Which technically would include earlier bolt-action rifles.
>>

I've found the phrase "battle rifle" used in older literature interchangeably with "infantry rifle". For the purposes of this thread, it refers to civilian-market clones of full-power autoloading rifles in current or former military use.

I got to finger fuck a HK 770 for the first time today. The price tag is $3000, but it's in very good condition. Aside from the price tag the rifle is pretty light and I love how smooth the action is. The only problem I have with the rifle is where the mag release is. Overall, it's fucking sweet. My question to all of you is if HK started to reproduce the 770 would you buy one?

That appears to be the case. The carbine buffer is about 4.5oz and is stamped H2, whereas the generic 308 AR rifle buffer is about 5.5oz and isn't stamped. The spring also appears to be more sturdy but I can't tell.

>>31613243
Heh I wish. This is my first 308 AR and the frustrations I've been dealing with trying to get these parts to work is nothing short of infuriating. I've been spoiled by tinking with my regular AR15s with all of their fancy shmancy standardized parts.
>>
holy fuck whose bright idea at FN was to have the bipod installation not be separate from the spring and rod system on the bipod. every time you want to remove/add the bipod you have to deal with the spring and rod.
>>
>>31620153
Why would you be doing it that often?
>>
>>31619326
Contact the mfg, and ask them what buffer to use with a rifle stock
>>
>>31620193
doesn't matter. it shouldn't require having to lean on it in order to install in the first place. i imagine people will want to avoid attaching/detaching the bipod solely because of the method of installation.
>>
>>31596603
>>
>>31620225
It was not designed to be done often. Military organizations tend to have uniform standards.

For a civvie it can be frustrating, sure. The FAL was not designed with that market in mind.
>>
>>31620536
i got it on
there was much leaning involved to put weight on the spring
the fun part is that the rod is stuck on something in the leg so the spring is stuck compressed. rod won't pop out to press on the bipod bracket the whole point of putting the spring in so it wasn't flopping about is now moot

thanks, fal bipod

Well you could wait till May for something like a SCAR, or you could get basically any other right now. Cheapest might still be FAL parts kits but you have to assemble that (it isn't terribly hard as I hear it, just time consuming). Otherwise a PTR is cheap so you'd have money left over for ammo or "SICK MODS BRO!!!!".
