Didn't get any straight answers last thread so I'm posting again. I'm about to get a ~$1500 bonus at work and I want to buy an AR. I've been looking at DPMS and the Sig Sauer M400. Any other guns I should be considering under $1500? I don't really want to build my own so I'm looking to buy a complete gun.

For installing an LPK you only really need like, a punch or two and a small hammer. Arfcom actually has a stupid easy tutorial for this.

If you can't afford a small hammer, a rock would be ok too.

And that's being spendy with it. A finishing nail could easily supplant the punches if needed.

A mid range set of roll pin punches (I went low end and regret it), and a cheap hammer with removable heads (brass, copper, rubber, nylon), rare earth magnet, and tweezers.
Everyone should own a set of screw drivers and hex keys as well.
Those will be your best friends for not just AR's, but most firearms. Although >>27798131
is fine if you want to do it cheap.

>>
>>27798185
They don't offer any real improvements, and create problems of their own. If you want a short stroke piston gun, get a gun that was designed around a piston system, not a gun that had a piston system shoehorned in to solve problems that don't exist.
>>
>>27798131
even if youre only going to be using it for the catle nut, get one of these
>http://www.amazon.com/NcStar-Armorers-Wrench-powder-coated/dp/B00238XECI
add a decent punch and small hammer and thats it really.
take care with the trigger guard, make sure you support the underside when youre driving the roll pin in
>>
>>27798185
They're a stupid attempt to fix problems that aren't there, and they create actual problems because you're shoehorning a system into a rifle that wasn't originally designed for it.

They're a perfect litmus test for showing who's a complete idiot that doesn't know how guns work.
>>
>>27798125

>>
>>27798131
>>27798182
I've heard that the castle nut requires a good wrench and that some even use a torque wrench. Is this all just autism or will I need a special wrench?

Also, is it necessary to stake the castle nut? I've heard some people say it's definitely needed, others say it's okay to use loctite instead.
>>

>>
>>27798236
>and I don't own a Surefire can.

>>
>>27798044
What's up with everything about that handstop?
>>
The light mount is magpul, and is the only mount I could find that even remotely felt good on the rifle. Tried the vtac mount, feels cheap as shit. The piston kit is really just because I've never run one.

The piston gun does run a shit ton cleaner than my DI rifle, which SHOULD mean it would run longer with the same amount of rounds thrown at it.

What problems dies it create? The only problems I've seen are the BCG rubbing in the buffer tube, which has been remedied.
>>
>>27798186

people from the internet tell me it helps remove 1911 barrel bushing, but does it do anything AR related?
>>
>>27796080
god damn, thats a poorfag rifle.
>>
>>27798265
Besides the extra weight, recoil impulse, carrier tilt, etc...
You're likely going to have premature bolt lug wear and breakage.

Normal DI ARs use the gas to /rotate the bolt/ and propel the bolt+carrier back. But piston just punches the bolt carrier back and yanks the bolt against the lugs to rotate the bolt.
>>
>>27798294
But, uh, to allow more pressure torqued back on the the shoulder, a handstop needs to be placed behind where the hand is placed. So it can, uh..hand...stop.

Placing it so far forward doesn't do that. And having a barrier forward of the hand doesn't make much sense on a handguard so long, and even if it were in place to prevent accidentally touching the barrel, it's installed backwards.

It just makes so many questions.

Also, a free floated handguard where the primary sighting is iron sights. Ok den.

a PSA rep actually explained that they have two warehouses they ship from which causes the delay.
it all depends on what you ordered and when (crazy sales times slow down shipping also, obviously)
at most, the longest ive waited on a psa order was a week here in ohio

So, is there any metal flip up sights, or am I just fucked with my railed GB?
>>
>>27798897
There are, but don't plan on flipping them up if you've been shooting. Those fuckers will be hot. You could put a fixed iron on there. You could also just get a new gas block/FSB. You could also just leave it be. You might make arfcommers shit their pants that you don't have backup irons, but oh well.
>>
>>27798960
Well I'd be alright with a fixed FS. Any recommendations there?
>>
>>27799022
I really like the Daniel Defense one. If you want that sorta-FSB look for really cheap, you can get a UTG one from amazon for like $20 and they're actually not bad.
>>
>>27799043
Thanks m8

I should mention that not all gas blocks are the correct height for using an iron meant for a handguard. Some of them are lower.

>What Optic is that?
It actually looks a bit like the prism that Primary Arms sells. The PA stuff is all chinese-made and some other companies sell the same products (with small variations) under their own names.

>>27799109
>The rail on the upper and the gb are the same height, if that helps.
If you're positive they're the exact same height, then you're in luck and you can just buy any handguard-height front iron instead of finding a gasblock height one. That extra riser you have on your upper would need to come off, and with that optic placed where it is you really wouldn't be able to use the irons without taking it off.
>>
>>27799171
The optic and riser will be coming off soon anyhow.

The one thing I'm so appreciative of s&w doing is making the gb rail the same height as the receiver rail.

Last Round Bolt Hold Open

I know sometimes there are issues on rifles where this does not occur. I'm guessing its a gas issue?
>>
>>27797821
where do these come from
>>
>>27800497
What do you plan on doing with it? <200yd or >200yd shooting?
>>
>>27801054
The only time when it doesn't occur is when the rifle isn't cycling correctly- which should be causing more important issues than bolt hold open, or if you have a weak/malformed defective bolt catch spring.

I had a rifle which had occasional, increasing problems with the bolt staying open, and the problem was the defective spring. Once I narrowed down the problem, it was an easy fix. On a functioning rifle, this isn't a problem.

Doesn't look like a Ghost Gun General is up so I'll post this here;

I'm going to head to Harbor Freight in the next few days for the stuff I need to finish my 80%.
So far I have on my list:
Drill Press
Stop collar
XY Vice
Shop vac
Cutting fluid
Ear plugs (maybe)

I'm not sure if I'll need a router, I might grab one anyway. I've read you can also use a file to finish up the pocket.

Anything else I'm missing?

yeah, undergassing. it's one of the tests when you're figuring out what gas setting for your adjustable gas block - load 1 into the magazine and if it's not locking back open it up more.
