How do you do dynamic gesture drawing from life, when you realistically just have about 1 second before a person changes his/her pose? I'm currently trying this at the beach, but failing miserably. Proportions get screwed up in my haste and the original gesture isn't even captured..
>>
>>3080739
You just put people together, then try to find an interesting arrangement that has a variety of poses and doesn't feature them all equally. You can even start to think of them as a single unit, especially if they are wearing the same colour clothing. Tissot would thumbnail crowds as a big shape then add in small circles for heads above it after the fact.

i'm working through hampton's figure drawing book, am I supposed to be doing everything he's talking about when copying from reference or am I supposed to do it from imagination?
>>
When drawing should i look only at reference when drawing or should I also look at the result? I've read/heard that you should stay glued to reference but now I feel that because of that i'm not concentrating enough on achieving the result that i want because I can't 100% say what is going on on my page when I'm not looking. I also don't visualize my next line. Basically because of being afraid of developing a bad habit of looking at my stuff I now have a bad habit of being careless and wishy-washy with my strokes. Basically I feel more in control and focused when i look at my stuff but now i'm worried that i'm developing a bad habit.

how do you learn patience?
>>
>>3081319

You acquire it through practice. Practice in chunks, take breaks between each. Later, suppress one of the break. Your two 10 minute chunks are now one 20 minute chunk. Repeat until you reach the time you're aiming for. Lot of medicine students learn for 6 long hours by themselves, but they didn't begin at 6.

Does anyone have any idea of why my tablet sometimes does this?
It happens when I use the eraser on the actual pen and go back to using the tip, and when I switch from color to erase and back to color.

I'm using Clip Studio Paint and what fixes it is moving the pen away from the tablet.

How does one learn to render/paint digitally? I don't mean actual value/color theory, but the actual skill of painting something.

It's something that hasn't clicked yet at all for me once I moved from physical to digital. I'm using clip studio paint if that at all helps.

I saw my dad not 5 minutes ago and thought I can recognize him from behind in a crowd, and I can say things like he's got wrinkles, dark eyes, prominent nose, a stubble, I can't actually draw him from memory.
This book is stupid.
>>
How do I make my sketchbook look neat and cohesive? I really hate how messy it looks and I want to get in the habit of drawing more cleanly
>>
>>3084293

This is a test with a purpose, to show you how an untrained memory is unreliable. Draw something, not your dad, something simpler, then some times later try to draw it from memory, you'll see that you remember it in 2 different ways, the usual/unreliable one but also how you drew it, its basic shape.

Honestly it feels a little like a trick, akin to throwing a kid in a pool then teaching him to swim so he can compare his "I can move in water" level one week later with his "help me I'm drowning" level.
>>
Over the months, my depression has gotten to the point where attempting to draw anything feels impossible. I start to draw, then it's like I overthink what else I need to add like more complicated forms and ways to join them all together, turning anything fun I try to draw into a chore.

Is there anyone here who has related to this, and how can I get over it?
>>
>>3084634

Only thing which does it for me is to go on /r9k/ and make dumb frog drawings to shitpost and make them laugh. It works because I'm reacting to what is posted instead of trying to make things on my own (also the quality isn't a problem).

Taking a beginner art class at the moment.
Whenever we go up for critiques the teacher rips us a new one and points out every mistake he sees as well as how to correct it. Its good shit honestly.

But when I go up for critiques he just says its good and tells me to sit back down.

Is the Loomis method for head construction just for beginners?
I mean, the ball I draw initially (and that you will later "split") does not really match the actual shape of the skull. And if I don't use tools to make a perfect ball on the paper then the head I will draw on it will also have it's proportions thrown off
Wouldn't just drawing three parallel lines have the same result at this point?
>>
>>3086743
No. You just learn to draw a cranium-shaped circle and work from there.
>>
>>3085508

Fun with a pencil is basically the definitive "starting from scratch" loomis book. It holds your hand through the method.
>>
>>3086747
Fine but you need tools for this right? Cause if you don't make a perfect circle the head will look fucked

bee looking at blotter art. Upon inspection I think there were two main processes of producing it:
flexography and something like linocut.
Does anyone know about some history how it was printed in the beginning? Somehow those blotter designs look really cool to me, some of those graphics encompass a lot of creativity, yet being quite simple. Maybe someone know stories about people who done this? Who were they artists? Art students? People whose hobby was art? Really fascinating stuff.
>>
>>3086903

Imo a combination between D and F

You start out shit and not knowing what to do, but once you figure it out and study fundies it'll go faster. Some fundies are harder to figure out than others though so once you get at a decent learning speed it'll fluctuate depending on what fundie you're doing. Then when you get reasonably good you start to plateau and learning speed goes way down.

Life was going great, even though I haven't drawn in a while. Got a new job, got a new office, moved to a nicer neighborhood, just got over a great interview to be a volunteer at an organization... and my life is stable, I have money in the bank. Full gas tank. Satisfied stomach, plus extra food I can share with my broke friends. Just great!

So, it should be good to draw, right? I sit down, and after not drawing for 5 months, I can't wait! I am brimming with ideas, the things I couldn't wait to get down on paper. Put the pencil to the paper and... fuckin nothing. I begin to get extremely anxious, like I want to drink or something to numb the disappointment. I look at other artists online, their youtube videos, animations, and I begin comparing myself to them. Why aren't I there? What's wrong with me? Shame and pressure begin building up to the point it's crippling. Yesterday I finished one page of half-assed sketches, then stopped due to exhaustion. I am trying to draw again today.

What the fuck is wrong with me?
>>
>>3087390
Nothing dude, that's called shaking off the rust. Whenever I go through a few months without painting I get full blown anxiety attacks when I pick up the brush again. Usually lasts a week before I chill out and get back in the groove and wonder why I was freaking the fuck out so much

I'm super torn right now...

On one hand, I never want to post my stuff online ever. I don't particularly care for attention, and I hate the idea of someone reposting/tracing my art and/or claiming to be the creator of my art. If I were to post online, I'd want to be anonymous. I'm a shy nomad by nature and whenever I receive any bit of recognition I delete my account and make a new one where I'm 100% unknown.

On the other hand, a public blog is the easiest place to document my progress (and I have a major hate-boner for things like Dropbox). I like the idea of being invited to participate in art anthologies, and I like gifting art to other artists (and having them be able to source my gift art back to me). I like the idea of taking commissions and being paid for my work.

If I make the decision to be a known artist, I'd go at it 100%. I'd be active and social on Tumblr/Twitter/Instagram, make fan art and fan comics, set out to table in AAs, push my commissions, etc. The whole nine yards. It's just... such a pain in the ass...

To the artists who've done it and/or are currently doing it, is it worth it: Y/N?

I have a Surface Pro 4 with a matte screen protector to create some friction and also have several different nibs for the stylus.

For improving and learning sake, should I use the friction nibs or stay with the regular non-friction nib until I have a stronger understanding/knowledge of fundamentals that I can use what I'm confortable with then?
>>
>>3087879
Literally makes no difference. It's purely preference of how much friction you want to feel, and what you find less mentally distracting. Zero friction would annoy me and so would a lot of friction. There's a large range in the middle that wouldn't distract me, so it wouldn't make a difference.

You can use fingerless gloves to reduce friction, and you can adjust the pen's pressure curve through software (at least with wacom). All this does is get the pen to feel comfortable to you personally.

Take your drawing, look at the flaws and search how to correct them. Draw quick thumbnails until one of them satisfies you better. If you're in the mood, draw it. Compare with the first.

Questions on this background.

Doesn't feel like it's hand drawn, but it's stylized very well. The textures and etc especially stand out to me.

How to?
>>
>>3090632
What specifically looks not handdrawn about it to you?

The texture seems to be just a simple halftone pattern?

There doesn't seem to be much stylization that I can see?

The perspective is nice, but otherwise it's pretty simple, you could do that either by tracing 3D or just by regular perspective drawing techniques.
>>
>>3090260
Practice making concious decisions. Visualise before you put something on paper. For example, visualise a square on the paper and trace it. Memorise characteristics of things you study and use it in another drawing. Being consistent is a lot more easier if you know what you're about to do.

Now my question, can drawing symmetrical be practiced? Every time I flip my canvas after I've drawn something, the drawing doesn't look symmetrical at all.

I've been doing quick drawings from timed poses online, like 15-30 seconds each picture, and focusing on loomis head construction. I'm trying to train my eye, or maybe it's my intuition, for getting a solid head construction right the first time without being a big careful ween about it when I'm drawing without any time limits. Good idea?

you could start by accepting that regardless of how you feel, what you do will slowly but surely determine what your outcome is

its do or die really. no matter how old you are. you dont have to be penniless to know that, or at rock bottom. thats what i used to think at least.

i always thought my life would bottom out and id finally turn a new leaf and start gitting gud. nope. only thing happens is time passes. and in this scenario, time is valuable. that time could have been spent drawing and learning. but i gave myself up to 'depression.'

just think of your future audience waiting for you to make it, your adoring fans that dont exist yet. the more time you spend cowering, the closer they are to evaporating into a brainfart.

I'm a beginner, been drawing often during my life but never really learned. Is there any chance at all that, being 35, if I start studying everyday (at least 5 hours), I could get at a level where I can earn money in a few years?

Also what's the best way to earn money with drawing (commission illustrations?)
>>
>>3092570
Ih all honestly? MAYBE some spare cash, at best. You need more time to work at a professional level - IF you show any aptitude or talent for it, and it's a highly competitive field.

You need to learn how to draw and paint, and find out if it's something you can actually DO, before worrying about making money from it. 4 years is a good amount of time to find out if you have any marketable skills or not.
Never say never, and it's a great hobby. Get to work, it's the only way to know.
>>
>>3092624
Thanks for your answer. I could actually spare up to 8 hours per day if I wanted to push hard cause I have a job where I can draw all day long. >What would be a good first book.

Basically the Sticky advises several books for a reason: each gives you something that you would miss if you try more advanced books.

> Drawing from observation, Keys to drawing or Drawing on the RS of the B
> Perspective, Perspective made easy
> Construction drawing, Fun with a Pencil

If you have doubts and need to start easy, read the new Drawing on the right side of the brain (take it in the Artbook thread) before Keys to drawing. Drawing on the right side deserves its reputation, both in good and bad: it will give you a basic level in a single week if you can survive Betty Edward's way of writing - imagine taking the Tea with your old Aunt who's slightly mad for a full week non-stop - skim through any page where she doesn't talk about drawing (honestly, could save you 50 to 100 pages, not even joking) and do the exercises until the final self-portrait. Then jump to Keys to drawing instead of staying on DotrsotB (the additonnal chapters aren't as interesting), as it says the same thing with much more details (and without the mad rambling) and the exercises will strenghten what you just learn.

Of the four, Keys to D is the best organized and Fun with a Pencil imo the worst to begin with, it's a mess full of useful stuff (currently reading it again and horrified by how many things I missed the first time). Perspective made easy is ok but you probably don't want to begin with boxes - you'll have to go through it though, I skipped it when I began and payed the price of my folly in shitty drawings.

Linear algebra. Then Roman military of the late republic.
>>
>>3097705

According to Betty Edwards (Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain), the normal progression for a beginner is from Line to Value to Color to Painting...
... but perspective and color are two different beasts, so you could just learn both at the same time, as you see fit in your schedule (perspective is demanding, experimenting with color is more fun). If you don't have time for both, imo perspective should go first, it will help with everything you do later.

Why cant I seem to get comfortable drawing at my computer.

Just bought a tablet and have been trying to use it, but I'm in pain when I draw longer than 10 minutes. My pinky starts to hurt a lot when holding it against the tablet, my right elbow starts to hurt while on my hard plastic arm rests, and honestly most of my fingers start to hurt after not that long of a time too..

I dont think that I'm drawing that hard, I can go back to my sketchbook and be mostly fine, but I havent found a comfortable position while using this tablet. It's a small tablet so maybe that's a part of it.

Any advice?

Put your sketchbook in the same position and draw something, holding your pen like for a tablet, see if you can reproduce the pain. You probably simply have a bad position.
Do you put the tablet flat on the table or is it at an angle? Do you use the Pen like you would handle a writing pen or more like a brush? Are your hand extended to draw because you're too far away from the fucking tablet? Are you bending on it like a monk writing an illuminated manuscript? So many reasons could give you pain.

I just want to say I appreciate you didn't make a new thread for this post, there are way too many idiots that would do that.

Now that you know you need to work on proportions, work on them. Copy some charts. Measure everything by heads until you get a sense for it. I have the same problem honestly, usually in the gesture stage, I make everything longer than it should be, but drawing a circle for the heads usually helps getting things correct if you're not drawing something with extreme foreshortning/perspective.

Practice drawing/painting different things you find in backgrounds. Learn perspective as it is the most important aspect of a background coupled with Composition. Don't listen to this triggered loser. Sexy waifus are achieved through good gesture not randomly making boxes and hoping it forms your waifu.
Gesture is a line THROUGH the CENTER of every limb (spine, legs, arms, neck, you can even go deeper and go to stuff like fingers but get the biggest parts of the gesture down first). THESE ARE NOT CONTOUR LINES. Once you get that down THEN you build form around it. Boxes are just a meme to visualize the rotation of form in space for "art intellectuals" but you can easily use the classic method of tubes and spheres.

look at the shape outside the figure, the negative space. compare the full curve of the photo's hip to the limp diagonal you drew. you will learn a lot my studying your flawed drawings
>>
>>3099870
Your line drawing when you should be shape drawing. Line work is for illustration while shape drawing is better for realism and painting. If you don't know what these terms means just look it up.

She's supposed to be a cute 100 pound Asian girl but because you focused on lines and there's no definition to imply shape or depth, she looks fatter than what she actually appears. If you traced over her you would get the same problem of her looking fat even though she's not. If you wanted to stylized her, you would make her body proportionally smaller compared to her head while rounding off so that the viewer knows it's a thin cute girl they were looking at

Sup, lads. Where to start if you are not a "beginner" I-can't-even-draw-a-stick-figure-tee-hee fag? I have tons of innate talent for drawing, used to do it all the time as a kid, semi regularly up though high school. For reference, if you gave me a picture of say, Goku, I could make a very good copy just looking at it.

I'd like to get serious about drawing and start by focusing on anatomy. Any particular advice for someone in my position/level? Any advice, book or tutorial recs well appreciated. Thanks guys I know I'm being a bit lazy.

My problem with oil is that it always ends up as a big smear. I think it is because the oil is way too thick straight out of the tube.

im mostly just curious, but how do animators in anime studios get good so quickly? i know they work like 12 hours a day, but before they get hired and while they work in a studio, what kind of materials, books, or resources do they use/study to get better? asking because i wanna know if its different between animators and everyday illustrators. for example, im assuming they study lots of real life stuff, to make the motions look lifelike etc.
>>

There was a bottle of "painting medium" in the paint set. It helped a lot. I've been painting straight out of the tube, which hasn't been working at all.

Is there a difference between figure- and life drawing?
>>
How do you guys store pencil drawings? After all the shading and everything I don't want to just close my sketch book since the pages rub over time and the graphite will move around and fuck it up.
>>
>>3102403

"Figure drawing" is a big umbrella word which will be used for any drawing of a figure (a girl for example), doesn't matter if it's from imagination, memory or observation - but in the case of observation it'll be called a "life drawing" if the girl is in front of you. It's why drawing from a photo cannot be called life drawing.
>>
>>3102454
There exists spray fixative for graphite/charcoal but I don't use them, maybe an Anon will speak about his experience. It will make for a very flammable sketchbook but I heard it works fine.
Alternative workarounds (obviously imperfect) are
> Draw on one side, not on the other page.
> Use scrap paper between the pages (heard silk paper is good, didn't try it).
> A large rubber band to keep the sketch book closed.
Main reason for smudging is when the sketchbook is carried over here and there. That's when the friction is happening. If the sketchbook is staying still on a shelf, it should be minimal.

How do you balance college, work, studying, etc. and still work time to draw into your schedule?
>>
>>3102573
Fixative, if used properly, won't add a fire danger more than the danger a stack of paper already inherently has. You should only apply a light mist - if the paper is soaked, you used way too much. The danger from fixatives is what's in the can, that boils off when you spray it - butane, ethenal, etc. A light dusting of it won't create any significant danger.
The best paper I'd use for storage long term would be onionskin/tracing paper - anything with a smooth texture, and no tooth. And yes, as little movement as possible.
I have work from college that I used a light dust of fixative on, that look perfect, and they're 30 years old now.

Ok guys, how do I change my lifestyle so I have a better work ethic? Mainly in the perspective of a student at school who waits to the last minute to finish projects. I'm afraid that if I don't fix my lifestyle now, it'll carry into my professional life.

It sucks though, I can't get enveloped into something for a long period of time due to Carpal Tunnel/other health issues. The longest I can go is like 45 minutes before I have to take a break. There's other issues too like maintaining a social life, helping with family problems, and such.

I've tried blocking websites, locking my phone, timers, schedules, everything. Nothing works in the long term. Sure I can lock my phone for a few hours to get something done that day, but it's very hard for me to get into a genuine routine for a long period of time.

Does anyone have any tips on time management and discipline?

Habits, look up books on them if you want to learn more but the basics are: you need to create habits (after 49 days something becomes an habit).

At first make it impossible for you to fail, think 5 minutes of drawing a day(whatever what matter is sitting down, picking up a pencil and draw) after that you can increase the time or add more session on the day or maybe create other habits.

I don't understand why linear perspective is divided in the number of vanishing points used for a picture.
I thought the number of vp was defined by the object rotation and you could have lots of them on the same picture.
The thing is, when look at multipoint persective drawings, everything looks weird beyond repair.
So, is this weird distortion bound to happen with linear perspective? Also, should I limit myself to just one set of vp for the whole picture?

Alright, this is going to get ugly fast.

There's the thing: we had out Draw Thread and Drawfag Improvement Thread.
Recently the latter has died permanently and the former seems to be following it right now.

I still want to draw. I suck at it, but the will to create doesn't go away.
/ic/ is probably where I'm going to stick around, and I know that everything pony-related goes to /mlp/, but I wanted to know for sure.
What are the limitations on the creativity around here? Ponies? Furries? Anything else?

/ic/ is mainly a board for drawing theory. It would be best to refrain from posting ponyshit and furshit. Anime typically is looked down upon, except in alternative style threads. If you're brand new, I suggest visiting the /ic/ guide https://hubpages.com/art/how-to-draw-learn

Whats a good regimen to follow? Ive been trying my best to follow a simple routine of doing the Exercises from Draw a Box for 15-30 minutes and then just trying to do gesture studies for rest of the time, which usually ends up being 40 minutes to an hour.
>>
>>3106129
The best regimen to follow is the one you make for yourself. You just have to keep doing it for months on end.
>>
>>3091115
Yep, a lot of manga artists use SketchUp to make their background scenes and then trace over them. Saves a load of time if you're going to have a lot of panels taking place in a single room/building from multiple angles and looks really good, especially if you take liberties.
>>
>>3106129
Option A: Draw whatever the fuck you feel like. For me this means doing a billion basic exercises and then trying to draw a pose/scene from imagination.

Option B: Focus on whatever you're weak with and force yourself to actual studies on that subject, whether it be gestures/figure drawings or referencing other subjects from photos.
>>
>>3106129
step 1: draw what you want
step 2: suck at it
step 3: study what you suck at
step 4: repeat until you can draw what you want.
