IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

you're symbol drawing, mate
draw what you see, exactly what you see. right now you're making up shapes and lines to represent what you see.
you should also get a B pencil
>>
>>3071677
Huh. I was somewhat aware of this symbol drawing thing and yet I still somehow fall into it when I'm trying my best not to. How long does it take to stop? Maybe I should try again.

I'm also kinda busy at the moment so all I've got is a shitty mechanical pencil I use for my programming classes. I'll try to buy some proper materials some time next week.
>>
>>3071678
the problem is that the only way for you to stop symbol drawing is actually drawing the volumes. and for that you have to use grayscale

try some grayscale exercises with your mechanical pencil for starters. make a nice gradient from the darkest black your graphite can make to the pure paper white. that's how you'll be able to draw volumes and then reality
>>
I have got a question.

When I was starting out, I relied 100% in reference and never noticed, after some months someone asked me to draw something, and Im like, fuck yeah, can do this shit. And I fail miserably.

At that point I was really confused and found out I couldn't do anything out of reference.

So It was like my skill being crushed back to a begginer state, it was sad and hard to take that.

Some months later, using 0% reference, and If I do use reference to do something (Like looking quickly to an image of a leg) I dont like to consider that.

Its been like that to this day, Is that something right to do?

Just because you add some value (incorrectly) to something symbol drawn doesn't mean it's better. Stop drawing faces. Set up a still life in your room and work on that. You need to read through Keys to Drawing so you know what it means to actually draw what you see and not what you think you see.

you actually got the right values around the eye, but I must agree with the anon above. faces are a hard beginning, some still life would be great
still, although this drawing has the same ammount of symbol drawing than the last one, you're capable of noticing values, which is good

feels flat. The bracer doesnt follow the contours of the arm and there's a tangent on the thigh/thumb area on the right. Even if the photo has that tangent it's better to move something to give the drawing depth. Also the bow it the same thickness the whole way down the image, so it's hard to tell which way it's rotated, where it is relative to the other feet and, as a result, where on the floor the guy is standing is difficult to tell. Your feet don't seem to respect the fact that there's a significant amount of weight pushing them onto a flat surface, either, and without showing the force, their position and motion is even more ambiguous.

A reference should be something to go to if you mind just can't visualize it. Ref's are important. But what really makes you more confident based on my experience doing it. is going by memory, and repetition

Let's say I used a ref page, and I looked at it for the whole time while drawing. Do you think I could actually visually memorize what I am seeing? I believe it would be more so copying at this point. For me, a better option would be. Look at the image. for like 30 second. Then look away. and Try to remember what I saw. Might help the creative mind :)

A4, thought it was big enough and you can get a fuckton of pages for nothing.
I saw the A3 sketchbooks were double/triple the price of A4 ones and with half the pages so I just scrapped that.

I think you're drawing with your brain; you didn't capture a lot of the angles correctly and you haven't taken muscle/fat forms into account. Your drawing looks like a generic white dude, when you're meant to be drawing a fat lipped nigger. with the eyes, you drew in pupils that are pretty hard to see on the reference because they're basically the same value as the pupils, and got the wrong shapes for the irises. you're not respecting that this guy's a little chubby, so his bone structures are hard to see. you used the cheekbone as a place to draw the faceline from, when the cheekbone isn't part of his silhouette. in the construction phase, sketch in the simplified shapes of all the major landmarks (nose, jawline, lips) and then draw on top of that, using the distances between landmarks for measurements, etc.

I'm not better than you by any means, but if you're taking "alot more" than 10 minutes to make a simple outline, then you probably do need to work on your skills a little more. Your post was definitely among the best on the board but it didn't demonstrate much beyond that you can draw good lines and a pretty face. I'd like to see more of what you've done, maybe something that's finished.

>>
>>3072663
>>3072669
Well, yes and no. For the longest time I tried drawing from my imagination cos I thought that's how it was supposed to be, and using references was cheating. Maybe it's something similar.

But for real dude, read up on actual human anatomy and look at people. That way your bodies and limbs don't look so wacky.

Even if it's an artstyle thing, you have to learn how to peoperly draw a person first. Only then can you figure out how to skew things to be more visually interesting, while still keeping a proper human shape.

Don't have any studies. I can't even draw an ellipse correctly. Tried posting the head exercise from Fun with pencil and got called shit. An anon told me to practice an ellipse.

Then when I post exercises from drawabox. Anons tell me to not only do the drawabox exercises and to draw from life. What do I do? Should I do both? I'd rather focus on one thing and getting down packed first before going on to something different.
>>
>>3072699
See this post is much easier to give advice for than your first. First practice drawing straight lines. Then practice circles and elipses. Then go through Fun with a Pencil. Go slowly and do the excercises numerous times. Post elipses

do drawabox for now. personally, i think it represents perspective as more important an aspect of art than it is, and is maybe overly mathematical, but it's definitely a good way for a beginner to understand form and finish some good-looking stuff and motivate them. do mechanical exercises as well (e.g. drawing ellipses, straight lines in varying directions, etc) to train yourself a more accurate hand. "Getting good" isn't a linear process, though; you shouldn't devote yourself to doing just one thing at a time, as making lots of slightly-out-of-your-comfort-zone drawings is how you improve and learn how things work. Additionally, just be perceptive of how the world works. Look at things and think how that would translate into a 2D image. Draw the main planes of photos and then compare the angles afterwards to see how your perception of 3D spaces and how your translation of them into 2D is wrong/can improve. good luck anon
>>
>>3072691
>The fact that I only do loomis and study real people?
No you don't. If you "studied" loomis, then you would at least know that the shoulders have a boxy form, or that the clavicle is not all the way down there, or that your torso to crouch proportions are way too short. He goes through every one of these things. So go through his books thoroughly and actually digest information before you try drawing blindly from imagination.

>>

Look at her left eye's iris. it is peeking out from behind her nose. Idk what yours is doing.

Look at how vertical the line of her forehead is supposed to be.

Look at the curl of her lip. How it curls up. How close it is to the line that defines the edge of her face. You're pretty close.

Nose shape looks pretty good. But the shading in her right eye socket (that kinda defines the bridge of her nose) should not be there. And look at the distance between the tip of her nose and the edge of her face. Yours is too far.

Her right eye should be narrower.

Distance from her eye to her ear should be larger. Which also means longer jawline.

Hairline would be fixed with longer jawline and taller forehead.

Eyebrows look good.

You're a good drawer.
>>
>>3072635

Actually that's a pretty good base so start on. Just jump in and start defining shapes.

I've always been really really terrible at it even for non artist standards though, even as a kid. I want to do it and I'll keep practicing because why not, might as well, but I have a mental block like "I'll just never get better, it's impossible, I'm just not meant to do this".

I hate using ballpoint pens they feel weird and I don't like the thickness of the lines, I'm gonna try out pencils.

How many years until I'm this tier if I practice an hour daily?
>>
>>3072811
How many years? Twice as many if you worry about questions like that. Worry about the questions right in front of you. Is this angle correct? Am I drawing what I'm seeing or what I think is right?

I hate ballpoint pens too. I stick with fineliners. try different pencil grades. try holding them differently too, use your shoulder as much as you can when doing large strokes, and only use your wrist for small strokes.

I think one of the big things to get is that "sight drawing" is basically all values. You're simplifying lighting into specific shades in specific shapes, then drawing said shapes. It's good practice, but I honestly disagree that it will "teach you how to draw". If you don't understand the beginnings of drawing from imagination (shit like construction and perspective and line quality, a la your shitty lines here) grinding still life won't do shit for you as an artist.
Basically git gud with values but understand that even if you do git gud with values being able to copy pictures goodly won't necessarily equal drawing from imagination.

The reason why is because you're symbol drawing. Read that infographic that's already been posted. Also actually shade in your lips as well as the shadows on the face. Also did you do head construction?

Having trouble overfilling my G-pen. Is the correct way to use a bottle of Higgins India Ink using the built-in eyedropper to transfer it to some container where I can actually see the ink level?
And then close it off so the main container doesn't dry as you draw stuff?

I have a feeling this tall container wasn't really meant for nib pen use.

You just dip it into the bottle, I don't think the ink in the bottle should dry that fast; it's not that expensive if you run out quickly anyway.

obv it's darker in real life. there's shadow on the paper so the lead looks comparatively light. That's the correct weight.

You're meant to do it in one quick motion, after ghosting the motion for a bit.

Not sure what that line going through the center is supposed to be. If it's her spine, then it should be more towards the left. The center of her rib cage should be more towards the right, because of the way she's facing. See pic related (from hampton) for example. The line for her right leg (our left) should end a bit farther up than where it is now. Foot is too small.

It's cute and good for color theory and values, but an absolutely horrible resource overall because you're drawing on a 2 inch screen. You need to work that arm/shoulder/elbow or else drawing from the wrist will create painfully crap lines.

Take some of what you've learned and buy huge sketchbooks (larger than 9x11) and practice drawing from life with traditional mediums. Refer to some of the resources in the thread OP for this.
>>
>>3071672
>>3071703

Symbol drawing like >>3071677 said. Take your reference and flip it upside down--draw what you see, not what you think you see. Faces are a difficult thing to start with because our brains are so hellbent on reading faces symbolically (emotions, etc.) Try drawing some static objects from life instead.

Also, ditch the lined paper stat. Sketch paper is not expensive. If you're absolutely too poor to buy a sketchbook, steal some blank paper from the library computers or something.

is that your progress anon? very nice. keep that grind up and you'll get really good
>>
>>3072820
desu, depending on the community college, yes.
it depends on how disciplined you are and how good the professor is

for me, I am not disciplined at all, so the $500 collateral involved with paying for the class made me do all of my assignments and grind the fuck out of the fundamentals. i was fortunate to have a good teacher

we basically did exactly everything that was on drawabox.com. I gained a lot from it, but I wish I wasn't such an adhd sperg because I could have just not paid for a class

I wouldn't go further than drawing 1, 2, figure drawing and color theory. everything else is pretty much a meme. color theory is probably a meme but i gained a lot from it in my particular school

i'd at least go for drawing I if you think your professor is good. if they're going to have you do shit like drawing lines, using charcoal, huge pieces of paper, drawing from life, perspective and still life then that's a good sign. i'd be weary of something that is too lax and "afraid to hurt your feelings"
>>
>>3072822
keep drawing lines with your arm until they're not squiggly anymore. I wouldn't go as far as saying you need to use your entire body, but there is a distinct sensation in the shoulder and elbow if you're doing it right. you mostly use them as a pivot for your forearm. don't be afraid to go a little fast; squiggly usually means you're not confident enough and moving too slowly.
