IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Any thoughts on this "Paint like a sculptor" technique? Pros and cons or something like that? Just looking for some insights or second opinions or whatever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC3OxonJcXQ

It's less of a technique and more of a way to internalize the concept of form and how important lighting is in painting.

bottom is first trial, top is second. Im not sure which way it'll pop up. On mobile by the way. Im going to go doodle now

It was supposed to be portrait style, not landscape because I drew the lines from left to right; not up and down. I've done this 4 times for the last 2 days. Should I take a break and doodle some more?

I hope you don't just waste time drawing only lines. Draw from life, draw from photo ref. You'll learn nothing drawing just lines. You only need 20 to 30 minutes for this. Even when drawing other things you're training your line control.

i'm reading the sticky and like none of this registers in my small brain

i just want to be able to draw with my imagination

i tried to construct his face but i'm slow at it
>>
>>3069914
Relax. Take it one step at a time. Drawing from imagination will become easier if you know how to draw realistically from reference. It will take a very long time but if you're willing to put in the effort, you can do it. Good luck.
>>
>>3069899
i forgot to render ear lol
>>
>>3069914
What you drew looks bad, but you at least have your pic rotated the right way, and resized to 1000p tall. You're going through the sticky too. This amount of effort tells me that you can really make big strives in improvement if you work hard at it. I really hope you stick with it.
>>
>>3069912
Good job at capturing some of the character, it surely looks a bit like her - but you are clearly thinking about turning the shapes into lines, which is bad. Look at the darkest areas in the pictures, then the shadows: turn these into marks on the page - don't turn almost completely white things like the eyelashes into shapes.

As a general rule: never underline the whole of the lower eyelid, it either catches enough light to appear invisible or it's in darkness. Also, try and avoid completing the circuit of the eye-contour with the same line weight. Look at the eyelashes and change the line weight according to the grouping

Try "drawing blind" more, looking at the reference while drawing on the paper instead of looking at the reference and then afterwards drawing on the paper. I also notice that's a very blunt pencil, you could benefit from sharpening it

The distance between her eyes, the distance from her chin to her hairline, the distance between her chin and her mouth, her nose, brows, etc. Anything can be used as a landmark, and as long as you're comparing two comparable distances, you should be able to work it out.

Your attempt is pretty good. Just looking at it here, the place you're off is the eyes, they look a little high.

rendering's more about light, dark and texture than colour, and you've demonstrated none of that. Render in black and white for a while, then do different, complex textures, then learn colour theory, then do what you're trying to do now.

think of when you look at an eye on a person. whether its regular conversation or like you're looking at rick's face in walking dead for way longer than you should.

no eye is that bright ever, and the iris is more or less one blob of color with extremely small imperfections that can only be made with colors extremely similar to the iris color. your white lines on the blue dont really look like that. consequently, our heads kind of perceive the pupil as like a void that consumes all who enter it, but really its just like a solid black circle. your pupil kind of his like an evil aura surrounding it.

>>3069823 isnt too good of a reference to catch what im saying, but its the best in the thread i guess. look at her eyes and try to follow what they look like instead of having your brain fill in the blanks for what your life has led you to believe eyes look like.

so like, for absolute beginners the only suggestion is to draw from reference? Can it be any reference, or should it only be realistic stuff/photos?
>>
>>3070259
ive been drawing for my whole life, but i didnt start attempting to draw realistic images and not cartoons until recently, like maybe the past year or so. i find that if you can do the most realistic image from imagination, you can draw anything. but in order to understand what looks realistic in your head properly, and not what your brain assumes because you haven't toned it for drawing, looking at references is a great way to train yourself to do so.

drawing from just plain reference is a bad idea. If you're going to do that, at least spice it up by mixing poses, adding features, etc.

it's gonna hinder you when it comes to actual design. just remember, proko drew this despite the fact that he obviously has a good grasp of the fundamentals, coming from his tutorials.

dude regardless of how it looks (i think its pretty alright) i commend you for drawing landscapes cause no one wants to do that and they're pretty important in art.

my biggest critique is that the background sky contrasts way too much. like if you were in an actual forest you would rarely see the sky like that.however i think some more stuff to indicate that this image is near the edge of a forest would work. maybe more grass, but waterfalls tend to not really be near an edge, they're pretty intertwined in a forest (from my experience) so this whole image is kind of strange but aesthetically pleasing to me.

Take a chill pill anon. I know how you feel. I've been "drawing" (one terrible sketch every 6 months) for a few years because I went into it wanting to make something that looked good that I could be proud of. But that's just not possible. You have to suck at first in order to git gud. You have to suck for a long time (kek) before you can make something that looks how you see it in your head.

Don't go into a drawing trying to make something beautiful and perfect. Go in and make fucking garbage. Embrace the piles of shit you make. We all make them. Embrace them and learn from them. That's the most important part. You're not an artist yet, you're a learner and you're drawing to learn, not to make art.

You will progress, and you're not a failure until you give up. As long as you're still drawing, even if everything you draw is shit, you are not a failure. My drawings and paintings are fucking garbage, and are barely fit to even go in /beg/ they're so bad. Hell that drawing you just posted is better than anything I've ever done. But I just draw to have fun, so I draw, I have fun, and that's that. Nothing is lost from me sucking, but if I never draw because I suck, I lose out on the fun I get to have despite sucking at art.

So don't give up, and don't call yourself a failure. Just have fun, and if you aren't having fun, do something else that IS fun (and hopefully productive.) I love you bro.

>>3070770
Thanks anon. That's very reasonable. I need to stop worrying if I make a bad drawing, even if it's a worse drawing than the last one. I need to drill it into me that even with big mistakes I learn and get better.

I have a lot of fun imagining drawings that I could make when I get better. I know I'll have endless fun once I'm good enough to just start drawing whatever and have it come out looking decent, when I can just let my ideas flow through me. I have fun looking at my work when it comes out looking alright.

I wouldn't call the process of drawing fun though. At best, I get into the flow of it. When I do get into the flow, that's something I feel is more important than fun. To be able to zone out and face a challenge that's at my level, coming out not being able to guess how much time was spent, feels like I've done something.

Sorry for the blog, I know, just draw more. Sorry for my neurotic whining earlier too, that's probably not encouraging for other beginners.

The angle that you drew at was completely different than the reference. Your face came out flat, the eyes and mouth were not forms but rather just symbols. Everything was off. You need to practice your foundation forms more and draw objects no symbols. Redlining was not possible since the foundation was so flawed, it resulted in my just redrawing everything. >half of the drawings have no replies
>once in a blue moon you get people offering insight into what the artist seems to be struggling with and how to study and practice to fix that issue

i'm pretty sure the point of these threads is just to give people a place to post shit drawings with no consequence because posting your work keeps you motivated to keep drawing. you'd have to have some hell of a work ethic to grind out hundreds of hours of fundamentals and never show anyone anything you've drawn.

>>
>>3071091
Most art here is at a level where they shouldnt be doing portrait studies. Then they ask what they are doing wrong when it's that they dont have the foundations and the answer is to practice foundations. They need to be able to view and conceptualize objects as 3 dimensional objects with set form. That comes from drawing simple objects and increasing the complexity of the form. So honestly most critiques here comes back to practice your foundations.
>>
>>3070267
over-polishing a turd is only really applicable when you're trying to make a nice piece of art, when you're doing a study as long as you keep noticing mistakes and fixing them you're learning things. So, unless it's at the point where everything is so far off that you have no idea how to salvage it, overpolishing is good

Cons: If you're not building for a cartoon or game, you should probably consider more detail.

How to I find the passion to draw original things?

I find myself enjoying editing art, rather than drawing completely original art.

Editing existing art and working on the fine edges in digital media puts me at ease, but working with pen and paper stresses me out. No matter how badly I do in photoshop, I don't feel bad, I just keep working at it. With original drawings, however, I just want to quit. Why is this?

do whatever you want to do.
>I find myself enjoying editing art, rather than drawing completely original art.
Find a weigh to do that that is novel and interesting and if it looks like shit just hope that maybe you're just ahead of your time.
>Editing existing art and working on the fine edges in digital media puts me at ease, but working with pen and paper stresses me out. No matter how badly I do in photoshop, I don't feel bad, I just keep working at it. With original drawings, however, I just want to quit. Why is this?
Everything is easier when nothing matters and everything is more stressful when it can't easily be undone. There's no wabi sabi. You're never married to any mistakes and you're never forced to innovate solutions. You don't have to make concessions or sacrifices or experience the punishment from mistakes you make that can goof on hours of work.

Its like grinding versus gambling maybe? It's a lot harder to find the mistakes that make you unique when you have cntl z.

You're not looking at what you're painting. You painted her eyeballs from straight on, when they're at an angle, same for the mouth. I don't even know what you're trying to do with the nose. I don't think you're at the skill level for this, yet, you need to go back and study the face, and how it's constructed, and how to draw it at an angle, before you try this.
For the record, you're making the same mistakes most beginners use. Focus, and look at what you're painting. You're just guessing at everything at this point, and you'll never learn from that.

Knowing when to stop is something a lot of artists struggle with. There are stories of famous painters, who would sneak into a gallery the night before an opening, for "just a little more!" God knows I ruined my share of paintings, overworking them.
I've tried to learn to reach a point where it's good enough, if it's a sketch. I've developed a feeling for "done" for paintings, from experience, especially commercially, when I'm on a deadline.
You'll polish some turds, but each one will teach you when to stop. I'll often now do a detailed sketch, and then put it away for a few weeks/months, and revisit it, and look at it with fresh eyes, and either do more, or leave it alone.

First, stop using black, unless it's actually there.
Two, learn to use color to control values. You have the same values in every plane of space, and it flattens it overall.
Learn to paint trees and leaves more realistically. You can paint every leaf, or you can indicate leaves - what you're doing is cartooning.
Doing landscapes means studying landscape. Figure out how it all works. How to trees work, ow does bark work, branches, what the transition from trunk to ground (each species is different), what do rocks look like, near water, what does water look like, going over a fall?
It's very unlikely a waterfall like this would have a full canopy overhead. Very few rocks are the same shape - I love drawing and painting rocks and their facets and shapes and textures.
Go hit up Flickr for waterfall shots, and start studying them. Paint from them, as reference. Start studying the colors, reflected light, shadows, and values of nature. Learn composition - yours here leads the eye from the waterfall, right out of the bottom of the painting, instead of leading the eye around the painting. You've framed the painting with a black line along the top (no trees in daylight would be that dark), use the same green, and make the whole piece feel dark and cramped. There's no energy in the view, no angles, it's all up and down and horizontals, making a rigid grid for the eye. You have no lighting composition - some rocks have highlights, others don't.

>>3071304
that's more of an example to show you WHY you're doing something, not a how to do something.

>>
>>3071361
the gesture something holds is where certain landmarks are on the object/person/animal. Getting this right means that you have much less stiff, more dynamic, better poses. The difference between this and outline is that the gesture positions the figure, portraying the body language or dynamic you see in the pose, and the outline is the actual drawing itself
>>
>>3071364
you're doing it wrong
>>
>>3071366
I understood his explanations well enough, but actually watching him put it into practice, he did it so well and seamless that (at least to me) it was incredibly difficult to differentiate where he stopped doing gesture and where he started with the outline

You're struggling? Good. Means you're learning. Stop trying to fix things that you can't see right now and move on to other practice.

Draw skulls/features anatomy. Do it for a week then come back to this ref if you want.

Pretty much practice everything like this. People point out your flaws. Do practice focusing on those specific flaws.
