IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I've read Perspective Made Easy, took notes, thought to start with Loomis but realized I'm lost with trying to place those boxes in space, that aren't parallel to the ground plane. Hence I'll work through Scott Robertson first and nail my perspective down. I don't want to draw humans anyway, pic related makes fun of randomly shaded, poofy anime hair styles, in hopes to break the ice of having to study the anatomy of hairless apes. ngmi

It's people who say those types of things that hurt you. It gets you questioning what's right and wrong, when really, as long as you keep working, you'll improve. Just keep doing what you're doing.

Maybe even a mecha or something or an alien.

finally found a comfortable and fast way to draw an eye... I've suffered for so long. Now to figure out nose and lips....

One step at a time.
>>
>>3061327

Start drawing lines and simple shapes triangle, square, circle. That will trigger your drawing mood. Then you find photo of simple objects and start drawing that. Better if you save a bunch in a folder so you don't have to scour the internet and waste more time.

I always draw fruits and try to render the heck out of it to the best of my ability when I get frustrated with other shit.

Sometimes I get a neat idea for a drawing, pick up my pencil, consider what I need to draw, then toss my pencil down because I know I can't do it.

Is it necessary to start with pencil/paper? I've been using a pen tablet for years, even though I don't draw that often, but am used to it. Is it important to go back to pencil/paper while learning the fundamentals? Or will I be okay sticking with my tablet?

Many subjects are much quicker and easier to understand when using paper. The only thing I would recommend studying digitally is perspective so you don't have to hang strings off your paper to find vanishing points and shit.

Also its very important to draw from life and not a photograph and if you draw digitally you will most likely be compelled to draw from a photo

>>

Start small. Don't go into drawing portraits first since there's so much you need to do.

Start with say looking at eyes. Try drawing one eye and look at each dark, light and everything inbetween.
Or practice with some other small objects. Don't draw outlines, but the different shades.
>>
>>3061712
OK well can you see why I'm confused into thinking I need to start with faces? OP posts literally only figures and faces, no fruit or other everyday objects, so I assumed that since this is a beginner thread, that I'm supposed to practice the first posts of the beginner thread. It's really demotivating to see that and think "oh I'm not even a fucking beginner, I'm somehow lower than that".
>>
>>3061714
Oh no. That's going into too much at once.
When I started, I also had the problem. Mine was worse than yours.
Practiced with shading spheres, then eyes and so on. After about a week, I managed to stop symbol drawing for the most part.
>>
>>3061721
Well shit, I've been practicing for months and I'm still symbol drawing. I'm such a retard. Sorry.

Anyway, for some reason I don't internalize what I'm doing when I try shading a sphere. I just go through the list of shadows to do it, and it feels like a mindless process. I don't know how to stop glazing over what I'm doing. Is there another way I can think about shading a sphere than just doing one type of shadow at a time?
>>
>>3061714

I'm looking for an artist to give me tips on how and where to sell art. I would rather chat on skype/discord since I have multiple questions. (I use dA right now) but I guess here is fine too. Is dA a good place to sell art? Would it be better to do commissions or add premium content of the original files on the original resolution or should I focus on adoptables instead? I'm not that good but I'd still like to try to sell something
>>
>>3061907
I also use redbubble btw and if there are more useful sites please let me know
>>

I increased brightness and contrast on right one so it's better visible.
>>
>>3061907
The only people I've seen get commissioned over and over again are artists that have a unique style and draw consistently, posting things every single day. Any large platform is good, I've seen sales over Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Etsy, and privately owned websites. Adoptables will get sales with younger/autistic crowds on dA but be prepared for your shit to get based if you're halfway decent. Another good place to sell are Artist Alleys at cons where you can sell prints, originals, or do on the fly sketches/take commissions. However, if you're really not good your best bet for sales is either for dA points from 13 year olds or start getting into the fetish business over at FurAffinity
>>
>>3061922
I'm still in school and even after I finish that I won't be able to post a drawing every day because I will have to look for a job and simply won't have time for that.. I won't draw weird furry stuff because I'm disgusted by that but you gave some good advice thank you!
>>
About selling art: Does anyone know how taxes work? Do you only have to worry about that when you earn a lot? And does redbubble do that stuff automatically or what extra stuff do you need to do? I don't know anyone in my country who sells art so I have no idea where to ask
>>
>>3061938
I think that's a question for the IRS about your specific situation and what state you live in.
>>
>>3061941
I don't know why you're assuming things because my country doesn't even have states.. What's IRS?

Sorry to repost the same thing, but can someone help me with making the facial shape more feminine? All my faces look masculine.

>>
>>3062019

>>
>>3062079
yeah the mouth is positioned wrong as well.. putting it higher should already help tho but then you probably have to make her head shorter as well else she might have a huge chin
>>
>>3062017
giving her actual cheek bones would be a start and actual lips
>>
>>3062079
You gotta fix those arms, bro. They're super tiny.
For feminine faces: soften the nose, lighten the line of the bridge and focus on making the button of the nose more round. Also accentuate the lips, you could part her mouth a bit. Gimme a second-
>>
What are some long-form/term resources that require a minimal amount of reading, and focus on doing? I'm sick of textbooks.

>>
>>3062098

>>
>>3062017
Cheekbones friend, dont draw the head as a flat surface, construct it as a 3d object and that will help you understand where the cheeks go. Also femal jaws arent as pronounced.
>>
>>3061046
Yeah, agreed. I understand anime is fun, but unless you're lazy I don't know why you wouldn't branch out and try something a little more complicated or original.
>>
>>3061039
Im all for stylistic faces but the aesthetic is just ugly to me. Make sure you dont fall into a loop of only being able to work within your style. You should take more time to practice only faces because your bodywork is great!
>>
>>3061047
The girl on the right is out of proportion compared to the other girl. Also, you should try putting more details into your necks. They aren't just sticks that hold up heads.
>>
>>3062098
clean up your edges and it'll be perfect
>>
>>3061969
Its really not that bad, try drawing with values instead of line. You can't really escape symbols if all you do is a line drawing.
>>
>>3062098
I know you don't want comments on the anatomy but if her tit was more to the right it would look fine
>>
>>3062118
I'm not the one you replied to (just in case you might think that) but I find it seriously hard to draw anime even faces already, is that normal?
>>
>>3062143
all drawing is seriously hard, just because anime style is simplified doesn't mean you need to know less to draw it
>>
>>3061225
Your body is so much better than your face. You need to practice in a more realistic style.

I had done the Loomis head thing wrong, I *attempted* a fix.

>>3062083
Yeah, I had tried working with a bigger head because my flaw is always making heads too small.

>>3062086
I had went and fixed the arms and made the feet bigger, but I'm not too sure how to position the left foot. I'm still going through how to draw lips, I have the basics, but when I put it on a face it looks like garbage.

>>3062157
That's what I'm trying to do. I want to draw anime (lewds) but I understand that they had to go through the same exercises I'm going through now and it's realism before idealism.
>>
>>3061689
Shading is cool, but why is she so un-realistic in shape? And where is her face? The neck looks super disappointing in comparison to everything else. Maybe faceless would be cool if neck was nice.

Kind of extreme examples, but hopefully this helps a little bit
Bigger eyes will help a character look more feminine, but not crazy big. Adding a little bit of detail like cosmetics goes a long way, adding a thicker line around the eyes to give the illusion of eyeliner and adding some larger lashes. Darker lips and more shapely lips will help a lot, and lessening the sharpness of the face will give a daintier vibe. It's generic as fuck, but adding those kinds of small details or just one of those things will help feminine-ize your character. Personally, I think changing the lips would help the most, you have a lot of room to work with so you could add full lips, and maybe shaping the eyebrows a little bit.
>>
>>3061732
First off make them fucking proportionate to the rest of her face.
Also, you gave her epicanthic folds. They're rare for white people (I have them, only reason I know) and unless you want your caucasion to have down syndrome probably disclude them.

Considering you're on 4chan it wouldn't be unlikely that you might be somewhere on the spectrum. Which can mess with your facial recognition. It's not a general negative especially if you haven't noticed it before.

I honestly have no clue how to draw feet. I've looked at guides but I just can't get the perspective down. If you mean her right, it was correct in my underlying structure, but it probably appears that was because of the hood that goes over her shoulders.

I didn't want to make the hands too big and instead made them too small, poetry.

My portrait looked like yours - worse - a couple days ago.

I've always been terrible, terrible at drawing, but decent at other creative endeavours. Keep practicing, man. I'm certain you're at least better than you were.

Just keep going, only compare yourself to your past self. Set small, firm goals and don't tell them to people.

Apply mindful practice; basically, as you practice, really think about what you're doing, what mistakes you're making and work actively to correct them. If you're even halfway good at something, it's because you did this.

Well first look at the object and imagine its values as individual shapes. Then look for the darkest spot and shade that as dark as you can make it. Then in the areas around it, make it a little brighter. Be sure not to make everything to dark, though, as a lot of beginners do. You'll want to make sure the highlight is white.

How many of it have you drawn? like 10? 20? 100? Draw more. Accept your failures. And draw more. Mileage is not a meme. If you're slow to learn you just need to do more of it.

Don't expect anything more from yourself. At this stage learning is all you need to do.

Don't compare yourself to others who have done a thousand times more than you. Just focus on your drawings and studies.

still adjusting to digital, but until I get used to it, I'll keep on doing shitty sketches. Any super glaring anatomical errors that I'm not seeing so far?
>>

You have no control or dexterity with the stroke of your arm and hand. You've been writing your whole life with a pencil while a tablet is a new medium that takes a while to get used to. With traditional, you only have to worry about your lead and the paper as opposed to the endless options that you're bound to get wrapped up in. I don't understand why people want to jump to digital when they don't know how to draw a straight line.

You can do all that or you can ignore my advice and attempt to draw from here on out. Maybe you can prove me wrong and become a great artist by never touching a pencil in your life. (You won't, but you learn from your mistakes harder when you realize how much you fucked up).

same guy here-- tried again using this approach for the first time. i love it since it gives me much more control. but it points out that I'm shit at what should be dark or light. gonna have to practice and experiment a lot more.

So I tried. Some of the issues I see:
>generally lazy
>smudges and such
>pretty sure angle of head is off
>face is abysmal (will focus on face of her in attempt 2 or 3)
>rendering is lazy which I think is what makes it look symbol-y and/or stylized

In my defense I was mostly focused on trying to get the gesture and general shape and proportions down, but that's no excuse for laziness.

Any critique and help is much appreciated. go nuts.

Watching Proko's head video because I'm lazy and it's 2AM. He makes a point about foreshortening. Does this mean I can't rely on the same proportions? Are there any rules to follow or is it something I eventually learn to eyeball after enough studies?

How do you draw lines? Just with shift?

Yesterday someone told me that was cheating.

its because you made the bicep too skinny.
you shrunk the shoulder to deltoid, enlarged the
neck.
and placed the clavicles wrong

Perspective lines, yes I use shift because they have to be very accurate. The rest is free hand, unless I see a super long straight line.

Please tell me how to improve my shading. I reference heavily, I can't draw and I know I should not focus on animating stuff when I don't even have the basics down.

Yes, I have Loomis.
>>
>>3062903
You're gonna have to foreshorten if the head is in a certain perspective and not facing forward.
i recommend you look at how people draw their heads at different angles.
loomis is best person to study for that.

I'm white tho.
>>
>>3062933
pick a direction of light and just think about how it would be shaded irl.
shading isn't a skill you learn about, its more you just think about it.
picking colors to shade with is a whole different skill which has many guides for already.

you're better off practicing without it.

I'm just starting out to learn how to (seriously) draw. I'm going through the sticky but what's a good practice plan?

Do I just grind through each fundamental one by one and avoiding taking on things that may be out of reach, say figure drawing till much later?

Also, I'm using a tablet, should I start with traditional tools first?
>>
>>3062991
I use it for everything and my PS work hasn't suffered as a result.
>>
>>3063102
i mean when i practice with stablizer its a lot easier so thats why i asked, because i thought it would affect negatively on my drawing skills/habbits or something
>>
>>3063157
I've drawn everything with the stabiliser on for years and I don't think it has seems to have culled my ability to draw with it off (I draw in both PS and SAI2 beta). There's always stuff that I rushed but I think it can't be helped. That being said I am a very messy person and I draw with an A4 sheet protector over my tablet. http://i.imgur.com/h9w9LJ1.png

Thanks for the reply, still too small?

The tablet is fine, dont have any other tablet to compare though. Ofc. it feels better to just draw on paper but the practicality of drawing directly into photoshop is something i guess.

As for this drawing i'm not sure how I should continue. Maybe just start over and draw something from reference instead?

How's this? I should've made the jaw wider but aside from that do you have any advice?

And also how to effectively draw animal fur with a pencil?
>>
>>3063185
I think a good excercise would be to trace the edges of a woman's body to see the curves, slopes and the generally where forearms end, how long the belly should be in relation to a thigh etc, all that shit. Same with faces, I don't know if you were going for realism or not but the eyes definitely don't stretch rom ear to ear and almost touch in the middle ya know? And draw her feet too, neglecting it will just make it more dificult for you later, trust me.

Very bad, you shaded bone structure but why isnt your drawing aligned to bone structure?
its extremely flat.
For example, the eye you drew on the left curves around like its spherical but the eye on the right doesnt even retain a shape.
The same goes for the nose and mouth.
