IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)

I don't know if the upper arm looks too short or if it looks weird to me because I've been staring at it for a long time. I'm not sure how to lengthen the upper arm while also trying to use foreshortening. The top of the arm where the deltoid meets the bicep also looks a little off to me. How can I fix this?

Your circle is not aligned with the angle the head is tilting at. It's at 90º degree to the ground, instead of tilted like her head is.

Divide the head by half with a line from inbetween the eyes. Make a line that follows the chin direction and the forehead direction. The isolate the place of the face and do an ellipse for the side of the skull.

Yes, sort of. Try to do less lines and divide the head into simpler planes first. It should make it easier for you to begin to comprehend how a face is put together.

Also, when drawing across the face. Try to imagine how it would feel for you to touch physically, that way you'll start to feel form as you draw.

It is a very good exercise actually to develop spatial awareness.

you should always start with the bounding box, which is relatively easy, but only once you have a good grasp of perspective. Use the vertical center line and eye line to find the front panel of the cube and build from there.

Once you do this, the rest is easy since you already have guidelines for the perspective of the skull and face.

>>3059084
This is another great exercise but you should keep it for later. It is useless to see planes if you can't see form first

In reflection, my portraits are looking a bit less horrifying than they were at the start of the year http://i.imgur.com/P7nqFGP.png but there is still a lot of improvement needed.

Progress is slow when the artist is lazy, unmotivated and unwilling to spend more time at properly measuring stuff out and/or observing and doesn't have that much time to be able to draw all the time.

Also my figure drawing is still quite poor. I first started poking around in /beg/ in about 2014 and my anatomy has improved but not to the degree that I am proud of. This is probably because I like drawing anime and haven't really bothered learning how to properly draw muscles except when I'm copying out figures and the only time I refer to loomis is when I'm struggling with a figure and want to see how he puts down his lines. Also foreshortening still kills me. Although I want to improve at drawing various angles I may end up just cheating and finding a program that can properly model the poses I want to draw and try that

I also managed to reduce chickenscratch lines but partly replaced that habit with ctrl+zing an infinite amount of times. I have noticed, however, that with practice it is taking me fewer ctrl+zs to reproduce what I am seeing.

I think that what worked:
>drawing and paying careful attention to what worked and what didn't work/looked wrong
>overlaying the drawing over the original so that I can see what I did wrong after finishing the project and before moving on to to the next project and even tracing poses I struggled with
>looking at how other, better artists drew the poses in /beg/

I think that what didn't work
>gesture drawings
I felt that these were all too short, I spent like 30 seconds scribbling whatever lines I felt like rather than paying attention to what was there
>all the art I drew in years prior to 2014
I improved at colouring and symbol drawing but not in what I was actually seeing.

Try learning some basic proportions of the body by drawing real people first. Trust me, when I stopped drawing anime for a while it suddenly looked 1000 times better and it was really easy getting back into it. Doesn't even have to be the in-depth stuff, just the basics.

I went to sleep so I didnt not get to post a crit to another anon who was in the previous thread so here it is. Hope you are here anon.

Anon's original is top left.

First off good job anon you really captured the likeness of the face. How ever it does look like he has been in a horrible accident.

General recommendations as always, do not ignore your construction. (Look at Red left to right) First lay down your ball and set the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears about where you think they should be on the eggish shape. Then re adjust your borders and contour lines like in the red line on the right.

The middle strip is an example of applying this and carrying it through to the initial blocking in of values. The values in your hatching are all very similar. I would recommend you dont worry about gentle smooth transitions in value and just focus on getting down the shapes of the tiles. First split it into 2 tones, then 4, then 6 for high lights and blacks.

TLDR:
Dont ignore construction and block in values boldy.

>>
>>3058789

Try to observe the negative shapes in and around the figure in the photograph and compare them to the shapes in your drawing.

If you were to remove all detail from the pictures, just to look at each as a flat, black silhouette, you would see many areas in which the two silhouettes don't match.

Something very obvious, look at the empty space underneath her hand, just above her shoulder. Look at the shape the background makes and compare it with the shape in your picture. Yours is very tall, while the reference shows a wide shape.

Look at the area with the knee and elbow. In your drawing the knee juts outward, in the reference they almost make a straight downward line, with a slight angle.

The area where the torso and the hip meets is another. The shape in the negative space is completely different with a long upward curve, just straightening near the top of the shoulder. The shape in yours is convex, and the straight starts far too low.

The tilt of the head is incorrect as well. There's more but I'm not going to pick out each one.

My advice would be to go through the book Keys to Drawing, work with more simple subject matter (a contorted figure is not easy to draw), and focus on recognizing the simple shapes and angles of things and reproducing them accurately in your drawing.

You should be doing it yourself, to get better at it. If you don't have a tablet, print the pictures out and use a marker. The very least you can do for yourself at this early of a stage is to learn to draw lines and ellipses correctly. Avoid crutches at all cost.

I freehand the ellipses on the paper, I just use the tool to copy from on my computer. Unless you mean I shouldn't even do that?

I'd say clean up the linework, but they're sketches so I can't really tell unless I saw something inked.
>>
>>3059622

You shouldn't. You need to internalize what you're doing and build dexterity. Just clicking out an ellipse isn't going to do anything for you.
>>
>>3059638
Sorry, I'm still confused. I'm building dexterity when I draw the ellipses on the paper, I'm not using a tool to do that. In the end I'm still freehanding it, aren't I?

>>
>>3059657

You need to draw. To DRAW. You are learning how to draw. You will not learn if you are not drawing it. Just fucking draw.

Don't use the line tool. Don't use the ellipse tool. Don't pretend with your eyes. Physically move your appendage in the manner required to draw the fucking picture.
>>

Just draw the ellipses on the computer too.

It's more practice.
>>
>>3059679

Just draw it all the time! Why are you being so pigheaded about this? I'm telling you clearly the proper way to do this and why, and you keep making excuses, saying you do it properly sometimes. Do it properly all the time.

Jesus you turn a bit of advice into an ordeal

>>
>>3059694

Sayings like that are meant for certain contexts, like if I were to describe a 'rule' about human proportions, or a 'rule' about colour theory. The idea, the 'rule' is a guidline that you can break if you know what you're doing. It doesn't mean use the ellipse tool.

I'm trying to re study construction more accurately, when I draw large boxes and such, I keep missing parallels in perspective which shows up way more evidently in those exercises.
>>
>>3060163

Most of them look fine to me, except the big one in the middle where the lines converging into space are wider apart, the deeper they go. The small box right to it, the it's converging too quickly downwards, but I am sure you've noticed that already.

Just make you your boxes are always closer together, the farther into space they go. Unless you want to draw without convergence. Get a perspective grid and draw on it, might help.

God, I'm really an oldfuck now aren't I? In my day we didn't have the internet.

I remember, as a kid, my mum (was a mathematician + painter) telling me that I was never going to make it because all I drew were Pokemon and shit like that but she loved to watch Bob Ross art videos and always tried to get us to copy his paintings in acrylic.

And the ngmi was a sign that I should never go near artschool because I was shit at it and would never be good at it and if someone was good at art they'd probably been indoctrinated in learning it since the age of at least four. I knew a girl who, at the age of 12, was probably 2/3 as good as the best artist on /ic/ AT THE AGE OF FUCKING TWELVE IN TRADITIONAL MEDIUMS.

Whenever I drew stuff, mum told me that I was 1) ngmi 2) drawing was interfering with my studies and 3) digital art wasn't real art.

Recently she saw one of my digital stuff and she said that the nose and face were all off. But it was "good".
>>
>>3060508
*
So essentially the idea that artists need a hugbox to develop is a completely foreign concept to me. They need a good learning environment with lots of good techniques and programs and resources and to start early and grind earlier because the earlier you start the better you get, not to be surrounded by shit artists telling them how good they are.
>>
>>3060509
*
I also realise now that had I followed the Bob Ross meme I would have been a much better artist than I am now. Master studies are a) Not a meme and b) not to be underestimated in the exercise of art. Not drawing deviantart shit, which would be good in the short term for morale but cripple the artist's development in the long run. Unlearning bad habits is almost as difficult as learning to create art.
>>
I feel like whenever I take a step forward, I end up taking two more step back. I'm supposed to enjoy the process but it's hard when my shit comes out shitty.

When you repeat a very long Japanese sentence that you have no idea what it is about, do you learn Japanese?

>>
>>3060540

>>
>>3060545
If I was relearning art I would try and sketch all the sketches in loomis then watch proko and learn the basics of gesture drawing then mindnumbingly grind figures on http://reference.sketchdaily.net/en/ and these figures in these threads and for my own fanart works.

At a ratio of 1 to every 3 figure drawings I would find my favourite artist - like Krenz Cushart for example and other traditional painters that I enjoy for example, and try and copy their works and watch youtube videos from painters that I like.
>>
>>3060545
The sticky, really. It's not a matter of learning how to digitally paint, but how to DRAW.
If you focus on rendering/painting techniques you will regret it later. Been there, done that and all.

But the process of drawing is so fucking frustrating, I'm stuck in my head thinking "holy shit you can't do this, you don't know what you're doing, what you're doing isn't optimal for progress" and I can't do anything. And when I finally get my hand moving, when something comes out looking like shit, I get so mad that I don't want to try again for a while. Fuck me.
>>
>>3060400
Not bad for never using a drawing tablet before. You shouldn't have used such bright colors on the books though. It takes about a week of drawing every day with it to get comfortable.
>>
>>3060549
You're gonna fail a lot. Pretty much most of what you draw when learning is gonna be shit.
But if you keep trying to learn, to see where you're going wrong, you'll eventually start to improve. Things will start to *click*

You'll need to change your way of thinking about learning to draw, because like this most of it will be frustrating for you.

You've been spending too much time here or other toxic environments like here. Go someplace where people will enjoy your work no matter what, only then can you grow without pain. You can challenge yourself without fear of others ridiculing you. Slow progress is still progress.
>>

I draw like shit but once I painted it it looks somewhat okay... I love values and forms but making the line drawing look decent takes so long that I just scribble the alignment and proportions then paint over it.

Now I'm learning to build construction with form and value and just skip the line stage.

I know this is probably a question asked a couple billion times every thread but what's a good starting tablet for someone who wants to get into digital art?

My friend recommended getting wacom intuos pro S but everywhere I read people say small sizes are shit (even though he claims it's more than enough and he's been at it for 20 years) and also that it falls apart, has flimsy USB port that dies in a gentle flick and that drivers of wacom are the worst trash in the world.

And on the other hand everyone just shit talks other brands, like huion, for being unreliable and shit, without actually saying why.

So here I sit thinking, is it a good idea to get the intuos pro M (apparently it's a new model) that costs quite a fucking hefty sum of almost 50k yen for being a non-screen tablet or bite the alternative and possibly just waste money.

I really don't know, and since i'm only getting into digital art I don't know if it's a good investment for someone on a tight budget.

tl;dr is wacom intuos pro M worth the price for a beginner or better stick to chinese alternatives

You basically symbol drew the light source ie pillow shading. Also learn about subsurface scattering, light should bounce around those liquids and create brilliant, deeply saturated colours.

I've read the sticky's definition of symbol drawing, but I have trouble recognising it in actual pictures of others. Any tips on how to recognise it easily?
>>
>>3060750
Look at any reference pic and then blur your vision, you'll see the idea of a face in values, that's what you need to start focusing on. You're too caught up in what a face is supposed to look like in your brain. Take a break from faces and start drawing some other shapes you aren't as familiar with, like a liquor bottle in high contrast. You need to get the lines out of your brain and start seeing the shapes and values of what you're actually drawing. Or better yet, go to Walmart and buy some clay, go home and mold it into some random ass shape, stick it next to a bright light and draw it. That'll help you draw what you see and not what you know, since you don't know that shape. It sounds retarded and meta but that's what you have to start training your brain and hand to do.
>>
>>3060753
>>3060648
This is symbol drawing, not to pick on you anon. Look at the lips of the drawing, it's just a drawing of lips, it's the symbol of lips, it's what you would draw when you think of lips. It's NOT the lips from the drawing, they look nothing alike because instead of drawing what anon was seeing in his ref pic he drew what he knows lips look like.
>>
>>3060757
This.
Outlines don't exist. Only different values. Light and dark and everything inbetween.

You'll only see lines around shapes in comics and the like.

>How 2 learn ellipses?

I drew this quickly over yours to explain how perspective modifies things: what is at bottom is the normal circle. Then there's yours, and as you can see your circle is distorted but not exactly as it should. The reason is that you're freehanding the circle to make it match the square, but the square is distorted too. Take a look at the red square at bottom, then at yellow square above yours. Yellow square is distorted by perspective: purple point is where the circle should pass.
