Most animu artists focus on a bunch of characters and just draw them a thousand times. That and basic anatomy gets you the shit in this viceo, also I doubt that this is his first attempt.

Most people here will tell you that they used construction a bunch and just internalized the proportions really well but from watching a lot of Japanese artists draw in streams and stuff I think that's BS.

I bought a brush pack and the brushes show up wildly different than the pack says. After a lot of unsuccessful fiddling in Photoshop, I reached out to the brush creator who asked if I had pen tilt. I don't, and he said it's essential for the brushes to perform correctly.

Am I getting juked or do I just not understand photoshop? I feel like even without pen tilt, the brushes should still have at least a similar appearance. The difference between how "parched" should look vs how it actually looks is upsetting.

What is the best source for learning how to draw better facial expressions? (mainly in comic book or animated style)
>>
>>3037840

The lady who does the cat comic had a nice infographic on it. Lackadaisy I think. Mainly you learn how the underlying facial structures physically work to make expressions. From there you can study how people abstract the features into different styles. You want to be careful just copying expressions from artists because you end up with cookie cutter expressions that get repeated.

How do I create doodle characters? I want something more than just stick figures yet easy to draw.
>>
If you want to draw figures good from imagination. You should do alot of figure drawing. But the thing is alot of people don't know how to properly figure draw. When you're figure drawing you're supposed to be breaking down the figure into easily understood shapes and forms that you can reassemble later. You're basically creating your own language of shapes. Look at krenz's sketches. He doesn't draw a box for the chest or an oval ect. He made his own shape language that he understands in a way that no one else can no matter how much one would try to copy him.

I've been drawing nothing but faces for so long that I get nervous and even quit whenever I try to draw the body like the torso and pelvis. Even cartoon bodies look really difficult for me to understand.

>>
>>3037298

How do you guys handle closeup shots with perspective in mind?

Do you draw the entire piece in perspective and crop it? Or do you find the negative space and eyeball the remaining perspective?
>>
>>3039328

Depends on which fundamental you want to train. If you want to draw anatomy, copy plates from a book through 3D construction and label all of the muscles and bones. If you want to train accuracy, copy plates from the Charles Bargue Manual as accurate as possible.
>>
>>3039889

Do gesture drawings daily under a time limit from sites like pixelovely and quickposes. Your figures will suck at first, but keep on doing them until the time period ends.

Can someone give me the quick rundown on skin tones?

Like i can paint other things just fine. A red block? Sure! Rubber tires? Fine! Metal shoes? Ok! Skin tones? Hell NO!

And before you say it, yes I normally just paint in B&W then apply a color filter. But damn sometimes I want to just jump straight in and get cooking. I can't seem to nail the complex color variations that comes with skin. Normally I approach it like any other material, but it just looks flat and very "matte-plasiticy" with some subsurface scattering in the mix. It's all wrong and I can't seem to get a handle on it.
>>
>>3040074
Thanks. Sometimes, I overthink how certain body parts join like how the arms attach to the torso and that makes me nervous the most.
>>
>>3039396
It really depends how deep and specific you want to go. But the absolute basic fundamentals of creating drawings:

>Line
Having control over your tool
>Perspective
Understanding and applying the illusion of perspective
>Proportion
Understanding size relations
>Light
Understanding how light works

That's it. These are the absolute fundamental skills of art. But that list is not comprehensive nor really helpful because it does not include knowledge that helps you create appealing work. The actual skills and knowledge you need for art are, from the top of my head:

>Technique
Line
Shape
Perspective
Form
Tone/rendering
>Observing
Proportions
Measuring
Simplification/grouping
>Light
Value
Color theory
>"Life"
Anatomy (or w.e building blocks of the thing you're drawing)
Gesture
Weight/Balance
Exaggeration/Simplification
>Composition
Focal point
Balance
Storytelling

What's a good tutorial for shading techniques with a pencil? Like, how to do crosshatching or how to make nice soft edges with a pencil. Basically how to do what I did in the picture but with a pencil.
I know what to look out for in a study (The terminator, occlusion area, bounced light, etc.), I just can't translate it well onto paper because my pencil techniques are lacking
>>
>>3040529
dude, chill out with the lighting effects.
the bounce light (or any part of the shadow) should never be lighter than the highlight.

What I do is really tight hatching to lay out shades. I'll post an example in a sec.

It doesn't hurt to try different methods of drawing heads.

Heads take a lot of practice to get decent, so don't expect to get it too quickly. Draw a lot of skulls by constructing them with a box first to help you analyze the form.

>>3039396
Interpretations vary, but imo it's
>line, shape, form, composition
and all can be subdivided further, like perspective and rendering is under form, shape design and shape language is under shape etc.

They all have one thing in common, and that's allowing you to communicate form.
Combined with specific subject matter from your visual library (every day objects, landscapes, anatomy...) you can draw anything.

It's true that these definitions are rather chaotic, you're better off just picking up a general, already structured learning resource (Loomis books, Drawabox+CtrlPaint, FZD curriculum, and so on).

I feel like I worry way too much about my own art process, mostly in the way I construct bodies. Instead of doing more complex and interesting things as I improve, Iv'e been doing lots of very simple and boring work in an attempt to find more efficient ways of doing it.

I have it in my head that I need to find a method of construction that makes these simple and boring poses a trivial task- After all, if easy poses are time-consuming and difficult, then trying to do anything more complicated would be a huge pain in the ass. However, I'm starting to realize that the biggest reason my work is time-consuming and difficult is because I'm so concerned about constructing everything and obsessing over efficiency.

am I right to be so invested in making my step-by-step process as quick and easy as possible, or is the only true way to make things quick and easy to stop worrying so damn much?

I have no clue what a picture plane is and I dont understand any explanation of it in the books I've read.

>>
>>3041207
>or is the only true way to make things quick and easy to stop worrying so damn much?

Maybe you're like me in that it's not that you think too much but you want to find a right solution and no bullshit. I mean when I watch a tutorial if it comes across as a "oh heres a trick to solve this" I dismiss it and want to find out why that is the way it is so it works logically. If I don't feel like I have a command in control of the tools to execute something then my brain refuses to go with the party trick solution in favor of going on a scientific march on the why before I move on.

The problem is, as sycra puts it (he thinks similar to me I found) is that we're over analytical about things. That's fine, the solution is to refuse party tricks reserved for the 'gender-fluid creative types' and put all your effort into drawing what works logically until you improve it. And this takes just as much practice as the other side only now you're not confused as to why way or that way.

Krita user here, new to digital.

Currently when I erase with Krita I click 'e', change the brush size to a practical size for erasing, and then erase. After that I click 'e' again, make the brush size smaller for drawing, and continue drawing. The constant changing of the brush size makes for very inconsistent linework. Are there smarter methods out there?

It's up to the individual but it can be
2 mins - action/flow/notation of expression
5 mins - everything in 2 mins + shapes essence
10 mins - everything in 2 - 5 mins indication of anatomy + tone
or
repeatedly drawing only a section of a focus that interests you until an iteration speaks to you

exaggeration
or
etc. within whatever time limit you desire.

Someone on his Instagram account mentioned him using VSCO to create this - it's a mobile phone photo editing app, with presets. It's a subscription type thing, and I don't have time to download and fuck around with a trial, but that's where he did it.
With the right photo, I could probably figure out how to do it, with the right photo. It's not an inversion, it's a tweak of channel info and probably some masking.
>>
>>3037824
Depends on the medium, and how much time you have into it - I've scrapped all kinds of paintings and started over, it happens. Sometimes, if it's a small mistake, I'll scrape off the paint and keep going, or scratched out color on watercolor paper, even used bleach (be REALLY careful doing that!) Most of the time, you're better off starting over, if it's a large mistake.

So the picture plane is literally the piece of paper you're drawing on. The station point is the bottom of your feet. It's basically saying how far away the paper is from you, the camera.

Stick out your hand in the center of your vision as far as you can reach. Make sure you're looking at a straight on view of your palm. Now look around with this setup, your palm follows the center of your vision. Take note of what your hand can cover up visually. In my room my hand can cover up a lightswitch, a camera, the body of a guitar.

Now take your hand and bring it within an inch from your face. Now your hand is covering a lot of things. I can cover up like three guitars all at once.

Think of the picture plane as your hand and the station point as your feet. The camera (your eyes) is attached to a pole directly above the station point. The pole height can vary, but usually 6ft or so is a good baseline. The camera can see everything (like your cone-of-vision) but the picture plane (your hand) only takes up a part of the camera's sight. The closer the plane is to the camera, the more information you're picking up within the camera's vision (putting your hand right up against your face).

What you draw on your paper is all of the information that is being visually covered up by your hand.

Hopefully that helps.

>>
>>3045888
Yes you're approaching it wrong. Don't worry what people think. Do the basics so you can apply those techniques to whatever you want. Draw by just looking at something you like, like a wave or a flower, or a car. After staring start drawing. Don't worry about outlining, draw what you see, exactly. This gives you a foundation, it teaches you: shading (tint) (lighting reflects on surfaces from a light source), composition, porportion and shape (everything has a simple three dimensional shape, the orientation of subjects makes shapes that your eye follows and each shape is composed of dimensions that don't change) and Perspective (dimensions appear differently due to a change in their relative location in relation to the point of view, the closer to the point of view the bigger, two point perspective is made by the intersection of planes that come from two points on the page that are the opposite of the viewers eyes and are spread out as dots on or off the page). Get a subject, pencil and paper and get busy. Once you get good at drawing get a $12 prisms color set at Wal-Mart. If you want to start working in electronic media start with what I said and then move on to the free programs, gimp and Inkscape.

Well for the drawing side of things everything goes but as soon as you add context we get into a gray area. I got a bit of a problem guys.
I often draw self portraits and at some point i just get 'lost' in the drawing.
I try to draw my eye for example and i just cant assess if what i drew is like what is in the mirror. Its like the comparsion mechanism doesnt work and i just randomly draw a line hoping it makes sense withouth knowing how it is supposed to be. The same goes for other details.
But then after i made 3 more drawings i suddenly look at my old drawings and wonder why the fuck i didnt see obvious errors. Its like the spel is broken and i see the drawings in a different way.
But why cant i see and correct my drawings like that rightaway? Its like my idea of what my drawing looks like is completely flawed when im busy drawing it.
Do i need more distance (mirroring my drawing doesnt work)?Or maybe i shouldnt draw in the same space that i live in?

Whatever you do, start with line of action. The traditional stereotypical idea of line of action is a single line through the body but really each appendage should have a line of action too. Like the horse in that pic, it's head has a line of action that gives that slight bend to the snout (also interesting because we don't really think of something solid without joints like a head having a line of action but EVERYTING should have a line of action).
I like to think of how I add shapes to the lines of action as putting beads on a string because the line should go though the literal center of your masses.
Keep in mind though that if your line of action doesn't look lively, no amount of dressing it up will make it look better.

So, I bought a graphic tablet (NEW 1060 PLUS) but I'll admit it I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed since this is all new to me, I've never drawn anything digital before, I was strictly drawing traditional before. Anyway, does anyone have any tips or advice? Like some sort of course, stuff I could read or whatever I could follow to reach a point where I more or less know what I'm doing? I don't mean drawing-wise but more like tool-wise. I'd just really like some tips, guidelines and advice if possible.

I'm generally just a doodler, but I watched a few of Alphonso Dunn's hatching videos on youtube and I want to start doing stuff like that. Should I buy his book and a thing of pens/sketchbook and go at it?
I was thinking one day of making a comic, so I need to learn to draw sooner or later.
>>
>>3049963
Hello fellow Inksman, I see you wish to follow the Dunn way. I'm still a beginner myself but I will make a suggestion. The book is well worth it, but its also a bit bare bones. It's really all about getting what you want to render through ink and strokes. It gives you what you need but also leaves plenty of room for experimentation, which I suggest you do.

Since you mentioned comics, if you want to pursue that, then fundamentals is something you should brush up first or at least at the same time as working with the book. For example, I'm studying perspective first while practicing shading with tech pens, dip pens, and a brush afterwards every day.

As for tools, the books lists through them to try out, but for paper, you want something smooth with little tooth. Bristol smooth is the way to go, though smooth printer paper is a nice cheaper substitute.

Best of luck.

Okay how do I paint like this.

I'm just thinking that if I can aim to pic related (sans anime face) or >>3046363...that's a good place to be at.
>>
>>3050575
what you do is, you fine some example of the type of painting you like, you set up a scene with similar materials in real life and try to match the lighting as best as possible. you do a study of the painting, then you try to paint the still life in the same way.

easy, but it does involve doing art.

study fundies, do photo studies or studies of objects on your desk if you have space. you do not need to draw from life, does that make sense? you can learn to draw from observation from images, and that will suffice, there is no magic that comes from drawing osmething you see physically. gl! you can do this alll digitallly.

That half is wrong. Start with the sticky, get some of the books if you can, if not go to the sites like drawabox.

And have fun.
>>
>>3050910
It's not important where you start as long as you do. That said, it's a good idea to start with perspective theory and how to draw different basic shapes in various perspectives. Then study how light interacts with form, material and texture. This will support almost everything you'll ever draw and it's something artists keep practicing throughout their career.

Just a tip: get comfortable with the pen tool for selecting, it gets super fast after a while and your edges will look much cleaner.

ctrl + paint has some videos about it.

just calibrate your monitor properly nig. Though there will always be people viewing your work on shitty screens so there's no point in worrying really. If your main work monitor is well calibrated, your colors will look "right" even on some dickhead's over contrasted shitty green-tilted screen.

Sure. Hot Press is pretty smooth, but less than smooth Bristol and takes pastels better if you're going for that slick look. Bristol Vellum has a little more tooth and should be cheaper than a good quality Watercolor paper, though.

Cold Press would show more break-up in your strokes but take more layers. I think some of the rougher brands like Arches might be a little too rough unless you're working large.

Why not save money and buy a pad of pastel or charcoal paper, though?

Bro if you have finished all the practice in Right side of the brain, then now you are at the stage lovingly referred to as the grind. You should now understand how an image is formed. The next task is asking yourself what works/doesn't work about what you are doing now. If you can't tell, then draw more. Your patterns of thought and construction should be apparent. Once they are identified then either find a source that works on those elements specifically, or do master copies of artists who do those things well until you get it right.

>TL;DR welcome to being an artist. Grind every day.

Is there a way to replicate washes like this digitally?
>>
>>3053607
imo, digital imitating traditional always looks cheap and tacky. Let digital be digital, there are so many interesting textures you can only achieve digitally.

Having said that I'm sure there are some gimmicky wash brushes you could download.
>>
what are master studies good for? i'm not sure what i'm supposed to be learning from this :/
>>
>>3053607
There's a couple of ways to approach this. Rackham painted like this:
1. Do light pencil sketch of the subject, mostly to block out the scene.
2. He'd fill the entire page with a wash of something like burnt sienna or sepia. He painted on Bristol, most likely taped it down.
3. While that was still wet, he'd lift color out of areas with a sea sponge, or add water/color to other areas. This step isn't about detail, it's overall-area.
4. When that was completely dry, he'd draw the linework with india ink and a pen. He'd start erasing pencil while doing this.
5. When the linework was done, he'd let that dry, and then start doing very translucent watercolor washes on top, building up color, and also doing some lines in colors.

So, the closest I've come to that so far is this:
1. Get your initial sketch done.
2. Download or scan a full page image of a watercolor wash or texture that looks like a water color wash. I just made my own, and scanned them. I use a layer mask to paint in the lighter areas, with a white layer as the base layer.
3. Then do a layer over the sketch layer, in B&W of your line work.
4. When that's done do another layer for very translucent color. You can this layer to multiply if you want the black of the ink layer to show through.
>>
>>3053652
got any examples of your process you can share?
>>
>>3053705
Nope. I don't post anything personal here. Just play with it. If I have time, I'll do a small example that will exist here only, but really, it's not a complex technique, you just need to organize everything ahead of time, and go slowly. It's better than the painting method, because you can adjust at will any of the first steps, whereas you're locking into the background wash once you start your linework.
>>
>>3053724
And there it is, the self proclaimed "true artist" with nothing to show for it.

>B-but I don't want my identity linked to here

If you do not have something you couldn't show to /ic/ that is outside of professional or social media accounts then you only produce art for money and e-peen, and are not a real artist. Nice to see you've fixed your reddit spacing but you should still fuck off.
>>
>>3053724
understandable. thanks for the step-by-step explanation.
>>
>>3048765
I've been researching more for the past weeks and I reached very similar conclusions, which is nice. I'll look if I can pirate Schoolism stuff as well as Ctrl+ Paint. I might invest into Art Camp by Noah Bradley which seems to offer a private community for critique which sounds good. And Proko's stuff as well as NMA I'm not sure if it's worth buy or just pirating, probably is.

My biggest concern is what exactly to start with because they all see like great options but I can't really commit to all of them at the same time. I'm planning on taking these next 6 month and dedicate myself fully to these courses every day, but unsure about which to tackle first.

Any good book on constructing anatomy super easily? Like the way some artists look like their anatomy is sort of blocky but still flows perfectly?

i tend to push down unnecessarily hard while sketching digitally. I've been trying to train myself out of it with brushes that punish me for pressing too hard(by making the line uselessly large or by inverting the pressure curve so it disappears), but it seems like having to monitor my pressure like this is just causing hand tension that hurts even more than pushing down too much for a prolonged stretch of time.

Should I just stick with this technique until i learn to handle it better or is this a bad way of doing things?

Im taking this art appreciation class. One of the discussion questions we have to answer asks " how do hue, value, and contrast contribute to the overall color palette in the work you selected?" Im not sure what the professor means by "color palette". Does he want me to anaylze how the artist uses these attributes of color in the painting style and their meaning?

I started doing a lot of digital work and I noticed I was having some pretty nasty muscle pain shooting up my am when I moved my middle fingers. Stopped doing digital for a couple of days and took it easy on traditional and it feels better, with no trouble with graphite pencils at all for the most part. However using ink pens and my tablet I can only do about 5-10 minutes of reasonably taxing work before I have to stop for that same amount of time.

This is a recent issue. I've been drawing digitally for years and sometimes I've had to take breaks during an intense session or something, but I'm very concerned. Gonna go to my doctor but I'd like to hear some other anons experiences.

>tl;dr: hand hurts when I draw for short periods of time
