This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies, however, all forms of stylization is welcome here. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

You really should look into anatomy. Her right arm is completely fucked. It looks like her biceps sits on top as if she had turned her arm so that we should see the palm, but we see the back of her hand so there is no way the biceps can be there. You should look at yourself in the mirror in the same pose to make it easier for you. (pro tip the upper arm rotates with the lower arm, the elbow can't turn like the shoulder.)But you should still study some anatomy. Because if what I'm seeing is not supposed to be the biceps then its just as bad or even worse.

>>
>>3037089
You seem to have perfected your technique, however, your values are OK but not great, colors very dull in some places and jarring in others, face very flat and honestly bad, the eyes, the nose, the mouth all of it. Also background too dark and oversaturated, it really is the nail in the coffin. Try borrowing the color scheme from a piece you like, and fix the values and the awful face. I`m very surprised by this anon, it's like the colors and the lineart are done by two different artists... Sorry if I`m being harsh but I was excited to see your finished piece since the lineart was very good.

Hey I know you. Please link me your blog, I enjoy your stuff.
Now about this one, and bear in my mind this is coming from a gay male, it's very strange to look at, it does nothing for me and yet I know it's supposedly erotic.. male nudes from behind should be either artsy or fully nude complimenting the masculinity, If it was his front side it would`ve been good, but such a serious face and pose from the back with those pants is kind of weird...

Just look at the nose and mouth placement. Her overall head construction and facial expression is saying ''I got punched in the face 12 times, but then my I smelled my own farts and chuckled to myself'' It's like an autistic touhou drawing done somewhat realistic. This is what happens when a good artist halts his progression by churning out turds

I like the scene a lot, just some suggestions
I attached a quick paintover to show:
- fire at night tends to light up the smoke, making the smoke lighter than the night sky
- cars (and other metal stuff) should be more reflective
- on that note, the light reflecting onto the fabric of the person should be softer than that of the plastic petrol can
- think about how the eye is guided around the scene;
I thought it might be cool o keep the power lines at the top-right to keep the eye in the frame, and both the brighter reflections on the street light and car help guide the eye towards the hooded figure.
I also considered making the main "store" sign neon as well so it didn't get so over shadowed by the "open" sign, but maybe that'd be changing too much..?
>>
>>3038090

>>
>>3038153
Much worse. You've taken all the life out of it.

> fire at night tends to light up the smoke, making the smoke lighter than the night sky
It's clearly not night time, so this doesn't apply. The OP's smoke stack looks much better. You've also fucked a major compositional element too. The shapes in the sky divided by the smoke stack are much more appealing than your soft blob of color.

>the light reflecting onto the fabric of the person should be softer than that of the plastic petrol can
It doesn't need to be.

>think about how the eye is guided around the scene;
They obviously did, and you ruined it.

>I also considered making the main "store" sign neon as well so it didn't get so over shadowed by the "open" sign
Terrible suggestion. It would be far too overpowering, and takes away from the humor the "open" sign brings the drawing.

can any one point out was wrong with the swordsmen? It looks off but ive been staring at it for to long to see.
>>
>>3038301
He lacks dynamic. Judging by his lower body, the camera seems to be high up, looking down. But as if his upper body is drawn from a whole different angle. The guy should lean in more and deeper. Plus the centaur guy was just...waving his arm around, ready for it to be cut off or what? I think you should have chosen a better angle for the whole picture.
>>
>>3038301
My biggest issue with this is that you can't see a clear silhouette of what's happening. the perspective has the people overlapping themselves. I had to figure out what the major figure was and what he was doing, and then I noticed the cut arm, and only -then- did I notice the arm was actually in the process of being cut off. You can't see the action, you can barely even see the sword doing the cutting.

Drawings are most effective when you can get all vital information at a glace through composition and strong, clear silhouettes.

Maybe something like this?
The main thing with the guy with the sword is that he looks like he's about to swing, maybe push his pose so his sword has already swept downwards and to the side.
Also wondering, what is that in the centaur's right arm? the way he's holding it is a little odd.

I can tell the perspective is hecked up but I'm not sure how to help that
>>
>>3038436
Thanks a ton. he was originally riding a horse so the right arm was supose to hold the reins.
Im still trying the learn perspective with multiple people and objects, i still got a long was to go.
thanks for the help anon.
>>
>>3038301
You don't get a good feel for the action at all. It looks more like the centaur ran into the sword than the guy actually swung it at him. No idea how to fix it. Like the other guy said, the angle really doesn't do this scenario any favors. Probably best to just move on.
>>
>>3038385
Your drawings themselves I'll leave to someone else to talk over, because frankly I'm not in a position to give good advice, but there's a glaring problem with your work you should think about.

Paneling, paneling paneling paneling. Two huge problems stand out: You haven't provided space to accommodate dialogue, or if you have you've allowed too little. The other is something I didn't catch until your second page: The first panels are varied in size and organization, which is good. Plain, a little boring, but there's variation and you're varying angles (though, there is a 180-degree rule fault in your middle two panels, look that up). The second page is 6 equally sized panels; unless you need a regular panel size for a 4-koma style presentation it is the visual equivalent of trying to eat flour for a snack.

Manga especially relies on good use of paneling and whitespace. Try to break it up in the future. Remember the goal of a page isn't to fit as much content in it as possible, but to present the story and characters in a way that is visually interesting and exciting.

Haha the ass is nice. But I downplayed it because of the person I was drawing it for. You really did improve it a lot though.

Personally I think the leg looks too small now though.
>>
>>3038676
However I think it's a little more of the lighting on that side than the actual leg. And I love how smooth you made some of my colors (I did pretty much all of this via phone which doesn't excuse the drawing) so I used a hard shading method because it's hard to blend there in my opinion.
>>
Any tips on giving volume/perspective on Cartoonish eyes? Not sure why, but cartoon/anime eyes are killing me on this subject. I always draw them out to look so flat.
>>
>>3038752
I tend to draw eyes from an angle and even when the shape is more flat, I make the eyelashes and eyelid extend past the shape of the eye. plus if you make the bottom of your eye more rounded out instead of a flat line or something, it'll make it have more volume like it's being affected by something.
>>
>>3038768
Interesting. Thanks for that insight.
I know when I look at glen keane's work, you can really see how form is created from the way he draws eyes. But when it comes to anime with styles like say 'studio colorido', then it becomes harder to determined the depth when the head turns for me.

However, I'll practice what you suggested.

I've been practicing some shading advice I got in the last thread and I'm really liking it, it's helped me a lot to get things done now.

Since I already did Sucy, might as well draw Akko soon.

Would love to make it more than a "detailed sketch," but lack the materials, software, or hardware to do so.

Apologies for camera quality as well.

>but lack the materials

You can't afford a pen?
>>
>>3039185
Is this an homage to merc wip?
>>
>>3039188
Not any kind of decent one. I always try to go over the lines I want with pen (shit bic pens), and when I go to erase pencil marks and such the ink is smudged etc. etc.

>>3039198
I actually took inspiration from upotte!, the anime/manga series about guns. It can be whatever you want it to be anon.

Thanks for the feedback
>>
>>3039185
You`d be surprised what people can do with a simple mechanical pen and no excuses attitude.
You seem like the type of person that would always be like ''oh I can't cause pencil, oh I can't cause brushes, oh I can't cause no cintiq''.
>>
>>3039239
Can you?
>>
>>3039241
Yes, better than what you`ve done there mate, not that it's very hard. I`m just saying, making excuses will only halt you, it's like those obese Americans on TLC saying they can't lose weight cause of imaginary health issues and addictions. I was guilty of the same thing, traded my intuos for a cintiq only to realize hurr durr better skills don't automatically come with better tools. I was stuck drawing Nala 2.0 on a 1300$ machine while other artists did amazing things on Intuos M with basic brushes.
>>
>>3039239
I get what you're saying, and I know it sounds like an excuse, I'll even admit it is a bad excuse I sometimes use. However I also gave a specific reason as to why I don't use my shit pens. I'm sure there are people out there who can make great art with a bic, however I, at the moment, am not one of those people. And I don't want to run the risk of smudging ink all over this sketch regardless of how messy or bad it already is lol.

I'll practice with muh pens but not starting on this thing. Hopefully fix the "attitude issue" you pointed out.
>>
>>3039251
Having a small tablet isn't the same as having no traditional material, you still have infinitely way more possibilities to draw. And I wasn't that guy.

>>3039255
yes I know it makes a world of difference, I just hate seeing people think they can't make significant progress without better tools, you really only need a pencil to learn line weight, fundies, basic shading, perspective, construction etc, and I would know, most of this is projection from many many years past.

>>3039253
plenty of youtube channels are doing tuts or speed drawings, have more fun with lines, but make them much simpler, no chickenscratching, learn some anatomy, construction, study that manga you mentioned, it has almost exclusively very thin linework, don't shade almost at all till you finish those. You do have potential anon

If you're that desperate, just exclusively draw fanart for a particularly rabid fanbase.

This guy only draws Persona fanart, and while I don't think he's very good, he's racked up over 3k followers on twitter and also gets commissions/donations.
>>
>>3039453
He's not bad actually, he's better than most artists out there.
So far I've got a couple of coffees but of course I'd like more, I need money.

I don't want to start Patreon yet because my studies don't let me have time and I don't have the compromise to draw daily yet.

I usually draw the shit I like only, making fanart of the current fanbase when I actually share the feeling too. I'm like "hey guys, I don't see this so often here, it's pretty cool too" and tumblr is like "NAH WE WANT THE LOUD HOUSE NUDES"

Much much much better anon. But he still seems kind of goofy, I know you`re not going for realism ofc but try this: make his shoulders a little wider and hands a little smaller (atm he is kind of Popeye-ish), make his legs a little longer and toe less chubby, or add nails. Also raise the neck just a lil bit.

About the pose tho, let him either hold something or turn both hands into a fist, and his face also, if you want him to look embarrassed and manly/stirn at the same time, make those brows just a little bit angrier and try opening his mouth a little bit, you know like he's surprised or about to say ''back off''.

I know this is sounding like a personal fanfic but i`m just trying to give the image some mood. See Mentaiko Priapus for some reference maybe, although no need to copy his style, I like yours, it's unique to me. Thanks for the blog

I think discords have been too soft on me, so if you could tell me what is my biggest flaw so I can start working on that I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! I do see now that I made his hands a tad big... I tried to go for that SFV look but I might have overdone it.

The expression doesn't match the action. The palette is also way too limited. You reused the green and orange in the hair and the shoes for the shadows. The orange could work, but the green looks really dumb.
The white strip in the shorts is also the same color as the skin, so for a moment there, I thought she was wearing a weird thong XDDD

This is all just my opinion though, so I could be wrong. =^.^=

I can't say I am in any way shape or form an amazing artist, but I can say that I've drawn inspiration, became motivated to try out certain mediums or techniques from other artists.

Hell, when I was a kid one of the reasons I realized perspective can have an impact on a piece was when I was reading a spider-man comic.

Thanks. It's still all generally very rough, as I'm still partially searching for the right feel and style of the real world stuff. I want it to feel more urban and detailed/grounded, to contrast the heavy anime look of the game. I want both to be somewhat distinct, as there will be a lot of back and forth during scenes.

The manga is still a solid year from formal launch though. Still got a lot to flesh out, as well as improve my art, it's not quite where I want it to be just yet, but I'm getting there. I also gotta build an entire fighting game for this manga from scratch essentially. Which includes the mechanics of the game, and the entire moveset for each character, as well as drawing out each individual move, and etc... for a good... 34 characters and counting. So it's a lot, haha, but it'll be worth, if I get this right, it'll be a massive hit. Combining urban slice of life stuff, with the hotblooded competition of shounen sports manga like Slam Dunk and Ippo, with badass action sequences from the game, as well as detailed Akagi-like intrigue into the mechanics of the game, and the Meta of fighting games, as well as the level of detail we're putting into the game itself (rather than just doing some throwaway fantasy game like a lot of current vidya anime are doing), I'm very excited to get this project off the ground. With how hot eSports are these days, I know a lot of people will connect with a manga like this.

Depends on the piece. If it's limited palette then i'll just have an imaginary gamut mask in my head and choose from it. If I'm just winging it, I'll lay down a base background color and mix the local color directly on the canvas so that everything has some "color harmony". Then I'll think about the color of the light-- if it's a warm light it'll hue shift colors in light towards orange/yellow and colors in dark towards cool colors, vice versa for cool light. Things change though as pieces progress, sometimes I'll apply a gradient map or hue/saturation correction layer if I'm not liking how something is going. I like saturated colors a lot though so if you're into a more realistic rendering style then you'll wanna navigate and play with grays since that's where you'll get a lot of nice subtlety.

Very, I don't really know how to approach fixing the issues without changing it radically, perhaps lineweight and some more drastic changes to whats in shadow/light will make it read better but as it stands theres a lot of tangents and hard to read areas due to the overall poor silhouettes.

Is the foreground creatures left arm broken? Does it have a horn? Why is it right arm so tiny, lots of little things.
>>
>>3037257
A few things for accuracy:

I've never seen a pteruges (the skirt) made out of metal: I'd suggest you make it out of leather, with studs.

Gladius' have more angular tips: they're thrusting swords. The blade is not so rounded. The hilt is also disproportionate: it's larger on the real thing.

Lorica segmentata (the scale armor) actually bulges a little bit OUT of the body at some angles, not IN. You would never, ever see a lorica segmentata like that, because the scales are vertical from the front.

What kind of boots are THOSE? Leg wraps were a thing, but I'm not sure the Romans ever used more modern styled closed boots.

Go to 7:30 or so for boots. Hell, watch the whole thing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Heu_pPCYNfw

Here's also a video on late Roman armor:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOXjgoylNTU
>>
>>3040973
Watching the video on lorica segmentata I linked, I'm gonna have to clarify one thing:

The scales are vertical, but the shape slopes inwards. It's not smooth, like plate armor: it has scales.

Don't make it a cylinder though: the scales get smaller as they go down. However they are vertical.

his arm it's not broken, it's my fault for the bad perspective xD, he's supposed to be cutting the man's back like really fast and furious , but well that was not understood either x'''DD

Not that guy. See, this is why I use a trip.

As for the mouths and noses, we'll see. I take all critique I get here with a grain of salt. Like, I do think about it and keep it in the back of my mind, but I don't stress over it, nor do I try to contest it. Oftentimes, stuff like that can come down to stylistic preference. Anime fans in particular are used to dots for noses, or corners for noses. But perhaps there is some merit on what's being said. Sometimes people pointing something out can help me see something I might have not been aware of down the line, but it's until it's clear to me that I decide to do something. That's why I don't contest it.

But yeah, not me. Sorry.
>>
>>3040783
nose's whole purpose is to JUT THE FUCK OUT of the face, don't be shy with that. Even cute animu noses still stand very sharp from the face plane (in 3/4 or profile view, dot noses need not apply).
>>
>>3041287
This is exactly what I'm talking about. This misguided arrogance and inability to accept criticism. It has nothing to do with dot noses or what you think anime fans like. It has to do with your noses looking like shit, and your characters' mouths sticking out like crazy.

Something I've also noticed is that absolutely everything you draw feels extremely derivative. You seem to copy most of your designs, poses and expressions, and I'm guessing I've seen at least half of the things you draw somewhere else.
Of course, it's difficult to prove this because I don't watch anime, nor do I play anime themes games, but I have managed to track down at least four pictures where you've outright plagiarized someone else's work. I'm collecting them and will post a collage when I feel I have enough.

How much you copy is also evident by the massive difference in quality in your art. When you don't use reference, it looks like it's drawn by a complete amateur.

You know these are just concept sketches right. Obviously a lot are copied. They're not meant to be published work, they're just studies. I never said they weren't. The amount of dedication you're putting forth to discredit me is admirable though, sad part is, if you put just as much effort into drawing as you did into shitposting, you wouldn't feel compelled to waste your time on something like this. I look forward to seeing your collage either way though.

>look at this amateur artist, he's totally an amateur
Yeah, I'd be the very first to agree with you on that. I do what I can with what I got. Still got ways to go. There are people on here who are far more skilled than me, you're much better off trying to learn from them than trying to discredit me. Like, pointing out that I'm an amateur is like saying water is wet. You should look at at my urban sketches, they fucking suck. But at least people like my work enough to commission me for stuff. Growth to me, as an artist, is more for personal improvement than financial gain.

Like, I'm well aware of my weaknesses, and I spend time doing studies and trying to improve. In time, with enough practice, my stuff will be better. But you're not wrong when you say a lot of my stuff is heavily reliant on reference, cause it is.

But I'm not gonna sit here and stress out over every little critique given to me in these threads, as oftentimes it's just people like you who don't really wanna help others, you just wanna feel superior.

If I'm not mistaken, I take it you're the guy in the last thread who tried to prove I copied turtlefishpaint with my catgirl, and got thoroughly btfo by everyone else. You're right, I did use ref, but it wasn't turtlefish.

Idk man though, just as a thought, wouldn't it be more effective to direct people down the right path on what you feel they should focus on to improve, rather than make a collage of sorts like this?

>>3041289
Thanks for that. Duly noted.
>>
>>3041353
> I never said they weren't.
You never said they were, you fucking idiot. That's the whole point.

The only reason you're coming out now and pretending you were being honest all along is because you got caught.

>I'm well aware of my weaknesses
No, you're not. You copy shit and then scream like a little baby when people try to help you or criticize your work. This has been a consistent pattern since you started posting here. It's also obvious from your attitude that you have an extremely high opinion of your own skill level, even if you're pretending to be humble now.

>and got thoroughly btfo by everyone else
Living in your own little fantasy world, I see.

>wouldn't it be more effective to direct people down the right path on what you feel they should focus on to improve
This is the most effective path. Stop being a plagiarizing little bitch. Sooner or later, someone going to call you out on it.

I'm pretty sure I said here >>3040783 that these were loose sketches to get a feel for the world. Among them, a couple are copied, like the goggles person on the top left. Directly copied from the work of another artist, forget who. The Asian dude with the cap is based off Keith Ape. The black dude with the corn rows is purely from imagination, as is the guy from the backwards cap. The girl with the short hair used Anzu as reference. The glasses girl, I used some busty asian model, but changed a lot of things. The girl with the hoodie uses a girl I used to date as a base, while taking a lot of inspiration from Kr0n's style. The guy with the short hair I used a friend of mine as inspiration for the look, while looking at Samurai Champloo and Afro Samurai for style design. NONE of these are final designs. They're all roughs while I fish around for the style of the real world stuff.

Ask me for my influences, and I'll gladly tell you where they're from.

And I don't even know where you're getting off from with any of this, as none of these sketches are published in any of my blogs, PRECISELY because many are copied from other stuff. These are purely style studies. Figured since this was the STYLIZATION thread, I'd get some feedback on the design of things. What people liked, what people don't like.
>No, you're not. You copy shit and then scream like a little baby when people try to help you or criticize your work.

When did I do this?

I mostly just avoid responding to all feedback on here. I learned ages ago to avoid arguing with "critique" in these threads, as half the time it's just trolls such as yourself looking to shit on other people, and it becomes impossible to distinguish real critique from just some aashole troll. Pic very fucking related. As I said, I take note of all the feedback, and think on it as I continue to work.

I honestly don't even know why you're butthurt, as I only stepped in to point out the dude you were arguing with wasn't me.
>>
You know you're doing well when other people are desperate to undermine you.

>>
>>3041377
>The black dude with the corn rows is purely from imagination, as is the guy from the backwards cap.
This is exactly what I was talking about earlier in this thread. The final results when you're drawing from imagination and when copying are massively different, which makes it easy to pick out what you're copied and what's original. Most of your final designs are very obviously copied.

>as half the time it's just trolls such as yourself looking to shit on other people
Shit on other people? You just proved that I was right about everything I said.
Also, I'm not referring to people shitposting. I'm referring to the countless people who provide you with genuine critique, which you always refuse to listen to. I can pull up plenty of threads if that's you want.

>as none of these sketches are published in any of my blogs,
What about your recent Cloud picture, which was more or less a copy of two different pictures? What about your Zelda picture with the bow, where you copied the perspective and pose from an artbook by Ishiwatari? What about the pose in your recent Link drawing?

It's one thing to use photo reference, but if you're simply copying other people's art, there's an unwritten rule among artists that you're supposed to be very clear about what you're doing.

>>

Zelda pose is like a year old, yeah, that was using Ishiwatari as ref, and it was intentional as I was trying to learn from his style.

Cloud and Link are both purely from imagination though, so nice try, lol. The only ref there was Seung Eun Kim's work as I was trying to learn from his way of penciling things. Still haven't nailed it, so I'll be doing more. But they were great practice, as both helped me think in black and white a lot more. I used to have a big aversion to filling in blacks, but since doing these I kinda got out of that a lot more.

Legit good practice, it helped me out a bunch. So I'll defo be doing more in that style.

No, he only drew the shitty black and white sketch with the duckface.

I still get a laugh out of you. Dude, why would anyone seriously try samefagging. If there are these autistic people out there. I even considered not saying anything at all because I didnt want to risk having people think im the artist. But you were just so seriously stupid that i had to.
And desu I know im no the artist, the artist knows im not him, and the rest mostly wont care, but YOU care.
AND YOU JUST KEEP TALKING. Until now you got me every time. Sides in orbit.
But answer me again and tell me how im the artist. Its funny.

There's a difference between using reference/doing studies and copying something.
Reference is used to help you understand how to draw something. It usually does not mean you copy what you're looking at. Doing studies generally means copying, but in this case you're supposed to make it clear to people what you're doing, and that it's for practice only.

Copying refers to people who copy other people's art and pass it off as their own, without being honest about it.

I only get annoyed by people posting copies when they don't source the original. It's been a really long time since Tableguy posted, but I thought he did that, at the very least.

>Dude, why would anyone seriously try samefagging.
Why would anyone deny it this hard, or even try to defend a faggot who openly admits to copying?

This board may be shit, but I doubt it's descended into DeviantArt level fanboyism over shitty artists who copy.

I actually would like to see him what he thinks my Link picture is copied from. Like Cloud, that pose was entirely done from imagination, but it's not like either pose is incredibly original anyway.

Gotta be careful with dem copyrighted poses. On that note, to disprove shitposter-kun, calling me a samefaggot, here's what I've been doing the whole time you've all been arguing. Still gotta clean up the inking a bit, and add more blacks, I just gotta head out to meet someone. This is why we need flags in this place imo. But whatevs.

On that note as well, go ahead and tell me what this is copied from, I'm intrigued.

He didn't do it at first and I remember people posting his references as response to the things he drew, mainly to tell him to get the fuck out of the comfort zone.

>>3041517
Yeah, I agree with you. Those type of things should be kept in a drawer, not published. I'm sure all of us tried to copy pieces from our favorite artists at least once, passing it off as originals wouldn't sit well with anyone.
>>
>>3041522
>Why would anyone deny it this hard
Because im not the artist.
>or even try to defend a faggot who openly admits to copying?
As far as i could see he admitted to copying in his studies that he didnt post on his tumblr, but I dont even care about the artist.
All i said was that you are a sad because you devote so much of your time to discrediting other artists. I dont even care who it is about, but you are pathetic. And that is all i said, you made all "The artist defending himself because he got exposed mimimi" up by yourself.
And if you excuse me although i dont have anything better to right now the joke is getting pretty old. See you warrior.

That's hot, do you post your work anywhere?

There's no doubt in my mind that you Franksteined that generic pile of shit together from a bunch of different characters, but as I already said, it's not exactly easy to find the source of every single one of you pictures when I don't watch anime or play anime games.

For fuck's sake, one of the pictures you ripped off was a copied frame from Mononoke-hime, so while I'm good at hunting down the sources, even I have a limit.

You mean the ones that are an INTENTIONAL reference to Mononoke-Hime and are label as such?

Lemme guess, next you're gonna complain that my Rider character looks a lot like Kamen Rider, right?

I don't even know if you're just doing it for the (you)s at this point, or just daft. I've openly said multiple times what that set was about.

Trip is my handle, you can find me on Tumblr and Insta.

>You mean the ones that are an INTENTIONAL reference to Mononoke-Hime and are label as such?
So basically, more copying. Almost seems like a pattern, doesn't it?

>Lemme guess, next you're gonna complain that my Rider character looks a lot like Kamen Rider, right?
No, you made that character totally original by giving him the glasses from Gurren Lagann. If anything, this just shows how pathological your copying is.

Alright man. Have fun making that collage. I look forward to it.

You are probably the most delusional faggot I've ever come across on /ic/. I'm sure you'll get plenty of work in the future, as people just love to work with narcissistic art thieves.
