Anime = Animation

That is illustration or Japanese cartoon illustration with "anime" aesthetics that goes back to tezuka as trends change due to generation, industry demand and what sells. Despite the word "anime", a stigmatized word by norms, all the fundamentals are still present.

Is it "offensive" for you if your picture gets redrawn/repainted to show your mistakes? Not a redline, but basically someone takes your misshapen skeleton, fixes it and puts meat and skin on its bones, figuratively speaking. How does it make you feel? I got the Loomis books, and they all very quickly dive into measurements and approximations of ideal measurements you can memorize and then use to construct images without reference.

Now obviously that's useful at some point, but is this something a beginner, learning to draw from life, should focus on too much? I feel like it encourages symbol drawing. Any experiences? Thoughts? Should I go through the books regardless or stick with drawing from life for a while?
>>
>>3022614

Why do artists that work with line art usually set it on a Multiply layer? Why not just lower the opacity? As far as I can tell, there's no difference in lowered-opacity Normal or Multiply layers on the base colors below...

use it loosely, as a tool. if you have to defer to the construction balls do so. he says himself they are approximations.

>>
>>3022899
a bit of theory helps a lot i think with edges, like for example there are 7 types of edges. so if you like go through them all and try to understand them and what they're for, and what they relate to irl and what they are good for as design elements i think you'll be able to see edges better and make better choices as to how you do them.

If you do precise, black and white line art, yes, they're worth it. They're not required, however. They were developed for graphic design, drafting, and architecture, when it was all hand drawn, before computers, when you needed precise lines the same width throughout.
There are better art pens now, that don't cost nearly as much, aren't as hard to take care of. Rapidographs are something you should only invest in if you know you're going to use them all the time.

Reposting from a dying thread:

Ok so i had a question about "making references"

So I'm developing an original story. Originally, I was inspired by a song, for now let's say that somg was Bon Jovi's Livin on a Prayer.
In my story, the main character has these recurring nightmares, and within them a person is talking. The words they're saying reference a verse in Bon Jovi's song. Let's say I take 2 or 3 lines and pretty much copypaste them. Then maybe in another dream more lines are unveiled, and so on, for a few dreams. Bon jovi isn't actually singing in the story, but the words still make sense in the context of the story.

Could I get sued for doing that?
How does a show like JoJo make so many musical references ( important characters, mind you) and get away with it?
>>
How do you shade characters like this? I mean it looks simple but my attempts to render like this turn out pretty shit.
Basically what I'm currently doing is: lineart layer -> flat color layer -> flat shadow layer -> blending layer with the flat shadow layer mask.
How do you think this is done?
>>
>>3023744
whoops
>>
How the FUCK do you get clean sharp lines in photoshop?? Do I have to quadruple my resolution and brush sizes to get a decent line?

>>
>>3023744
>>3023746
You shade it as usual on a separate layer, then erase parts of it for softer edges.
>>
>>3023705
You will need permission to reprint the lyrics - and you will be sued, as the publishing company will come after you - it's one of the most litigious areas of music copyright. You can mention Bon Jovi's, even the song title, but the lyrics will get you in trouble, without permission, or paying for a license.
JoJo's have had copyright issues, as well. I don't have to time to find the links, but I know at least one band threatened them with a lawsuit.
>>
I asked in a beginner thread but wanted to try get a few more opinions other than one.

Where should I be looking if I want to learn/get good at drawing clothing, does anyone have any resources for that?

Also in terms of decent colouring pencils that aren't extremely bad, what could I purchase from Amazon or a shop (UK). I was told only polychromos, would that be ok for starting?
>>
What's wrong with photobashing?
>>
>>3023890
Yeah, you can get away with mentioning the band or even the song, but using the lyrics, even written word, can get you in trouble. To name an example of JoJo's legal problems, Prince gave Shueshia and Bandai a lot of grief back in the day, especially over Giorno's Stand being called Gold Experience.

Is the whole drawing tablets and software meme worth investing in and learning?

i have mostly worked with traditional methods but i had heard moving towards actually making any money then the digital stuff was where its at
>>
>>3022624
Anyone got any thoughts on this?
>>
>>3024306
I can't give too much insight into this, so keep in mind I only worked with pencils and comic inking before digital.

That being said, it opened up the world of painting to me in a way I just couldn't before, specially because of cost. I know there are differences when it comes to painting (especially color mixing), but it's definitely worth a try.

If cost is a problem (like it was with me), just buy an entry level non-shit tablet (mine was the old model of the Wacom Bamboo, I think it cost me the equivalent of 100 USD at the time) and pirte everything else (there's a lot of stuff you can get online for free as well).

If you are very used to and comfortable with traditional painting, I hear Painter is as similar to it as digital gets. Good luck!
>>
>>3024070
But you have to mention it in the context of it being a song or just ANY mention in ANY context?
Okay using lyrics is out of the question. But I have a character who's name is after a song title. However the name is also mentioned in mythology, movies, and even a book. I'm not making a specific reference to any song, book, movie, or myth either, rather I'm using the name based off of events happening within my original story. It just so happens to be the same name of a song title.

Where I can find good reference pics of interesting clothes for women? I've tried to take inspiration from what I see everyday, but most women from my country wear pretty dull outfits (blue jeans, t-shirts, boots).

Search for "street fashion" "high fashion" and "historical fashion" blogs - you'll get a billion hits. Usually just pics of random people in notable outfits, mostly women.

If you want crazy outfits, Tokyo Street Fashion is a great place to start. Otherwise, New York/London are more grounded bets. Street fashion is what I'd call accessible contemporary fashion.

What happens to breasts when a woman raises her arm? I know on guys the pec gets super stretched out. Is it kinda similar? Does the boob kinda follow the pec, or does it still have weight and hang? What about smaller boobs? Bigger ones?
>>
>>3025322
The breast is connected to the pec about half way down so if the pec raises, the breast does as well. It isn't as significant as a man because in that situation the pec itself is moving but there is significant shift.

The breast tends to raise up and get stretched out which makes it look rounder / perkier and reduces sagginess, which is why "arms up" is a pretty common pose in porn / erotic pornography.

To be fair, those are very obviously fake so they will swing more than bounce. Real breasts would absorb the momentum and ripple whereas fake breasts are going to swing along the connecting tissue because they are too firm for the momentum to carry throughout the tissue.
>>
>>3025390
I don't think that game did it quite correctly either, I mean they might've had a pretty good (but still simplified) model of bouncing titties but pretty sure it still was only titties, when in reality the entire body jiggles and deforms to various degrees while moving. Pretty much any body part containing fat jiggles in a way similar to how breasts do, muscles also jiggle to a lesser degree, even bones aren't 100% rigid. And of course, male bodies aren't immune to the jiggle either

This stuff is just super difficult to simulate in real-time using a computer.

yes i have 1 tb of real girls too, i remember when i reached into the computer to play with their nips lol.

i'm being a bit mean but you know like if you take something you know, like dogs or something, do you think someone who had only ever seen pictures of dogs would be able to bring to mind the various attitudes and anatomies of a dog in the same way a guy who sees and interacts with dogs everyday can?

like i don't think if you're an inveterate motor-boater that you need to make a note, "areolae are stretchy"

Something like this?

Doesn't really negate the point, natural boobs tend to move and deform even more than fake ones
>>
>>3025403
yeah but people are only looking at the tits, spending less energy and time on the bits people don't really look at is a part of art, and it makes art better. if the whole model bounced like real then teenage dicks wouldn't be throbbing in time with ivy's idle animation. the point isn't simulation, that's not art.

They definitely deform more. That example is such an extreme though, those real breasts are significantly bigger than the fake ones in the first gif. The direction of the fake breasts was more circular, the direction of the real ones bounce more up and down. Thanks for the reference though, having an extreme reference is really useful.

Not wanting to post in /beg/ because is not critique but I'm learning The New Drawing... and Loomis using pencil, the old way and a question popped:

Using tablet and digital shit is effective too (for learning)?
Do someone in general learns more using the traditional ways or it doesn't matter?
How did you started?
>>
>>3025425
wow they really do go side to side like in anime
>>
>>3025664
Yes.
They often learn more with traditional because it's what you're more familiar with rather than drawing on a computer.
Traditional like any kid who draws on paper.
>>
>>3025664
You get different feedback using digital. As most of us grow using pens, pencils and paper, learning using traditional media makes more sense as you already have quite a bit of experience with these tools, but if you're already comfortable using digital there's not much difference, the fundamentals are still the same regardless of the medium

>Using tablet and digital shit is effective too (for learning)?
It takes getting used to, but you can make it work.

>Do someone in general learns more using the traditional ways or it doesn't matter?
Traditional imo is easier to start with and teaches with tactile feedback as you practices line and values. Digital, because it's so removed, can be difficult to learn without first having experienced traditional.

I start with traditional

Figure drawing by loomis. He gives you a simplified frame of the human body on which you can place the things you like. It's mostly to help you with proportion and stuff.

Someone told me that if you try anatomy too early it can fuck you up. Even showed me some drawings that had all the muscles, but they were all fucked up sizes and it made the drawing look 10 times worse. Regardless I don't regret learning Loomis' framework shit first because it's very helpful. I'm just not sure if I'm at a stage where I should begin to learn anatomy or not.
>>
>>3025876
whoever gave you that advice doesn't know what they're talking about. you're going to suck at anatomy when you first pick it up because all beginners do. as you learn more about it, it'll look better. learning about proportions is part of anatomy. After you're done with that, read Loomis' figure drawing for all it's worth. it covers proportions too so you won't draw muscles the wrong sizes.

Give it creases, folds, like a real T-shirt. Pic related is a good example of what I'm talking about. Look at all the different creases and folds on his clothes.
>>
For a complete beginner who is interested in figure drawing, is it best to start with Loomis' fun with a pencil, or immediately start with Figure Drawing for All It's Worth. Or maybe another figure drawing book?
>>
>>3026014
i would say do fun with a pencil first ,that is like a pre-requisite to figure drawing.it teaches how to build heads out of basic forms and what not. and it doesn't take long to do. do some of his , then do some from imagination. once you feel like you can handle stuff in that book move up to figure.

How big of a difference is there between cheap gouache and expensive? I've got limited experience with watercolors but none with gouache, so I'd rather go for a cheaper option first. I remember when I was much younger I was making an RPG setting. I was really excited about the setting, and I knew my friend enjoyed drawing. In my mind it was a win-win if I did all the writing and she could do illustrations for my setting. Of course today I realize that's really dumb, but it's easy to understand how someone (especially somebody young who doesn't really properly value the time and effort it takes) to be excited about an idea and just assume people will be excited to draw it, "since you like to draw anyway!"

And of course, DA is filled with both children as well as adults with the maturity of children. It's unsurprising.

Please no bully for a question as stupid as this, but is it really better to learn basic proportions before stylization or can you cheese it by just learning already stylized proportions?
I've been trying to experiment with them by copying other works for some time now and it's frustrating. I think I'm retarded.
>>
>>3026661
you meming or do you actually want it?
>>
>>3027144
I would argue that an understanding of realistic proportions will help you far more than learning someone else's stylized proportions. Once you have an understanding of what things are supposed to look like, breaking the rules and stylizing to your own preferences will be infinitely easier than relying on the proportions that are arbitrarily set by someone else.
>>
Are guys better at art?
>>
>>3027144
I find that copying other works helps with the stylized part. Meaning if you want to learn how proper anime style looks like, then copying other artists will help you. But if you want to learn proportions and how the body properly moves and looks like, you need to be doing figure studies of real people. You can do both at the same time btw.

Gurney's Light and Colour book goes into a little more detail. At least into specific situations.

Most of it is just experimentation, man, fuck around with value and hue and see how you like it. There's no real right/wrong other than "make sure you like the final result" and "don't use the base colour mixed with black for a lower value because that looks like muddy shit".

>>3028909
There are a couple of reasons why you'd use multiply.
The biggest is, if they use or have any white or grey on the layer, setting it to multiply will make the white transparent - the calculations of Multiply will not show any white at all. I made a quick graphic to show how this works - the black lines and greyscale bar on the right is the exact same layer as the ones on the left - the left is set to Multiply, so no white shows. The one on the right is Opacity, and the white shows.
So, for instance, if you scanned some line art in, and set the layer as multiply, ONLY the black in that image will show. Or, if you corrected a line art layer with white, instead of erasing, or the layer is filled with white, with black lines.
Capiche?

>>
>>3029131
Is this a mashup of Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Data?
>>
>>3028962
It doesn't add it, it actually multiplies it, thus "Multiply". It calculates every pixel of the later, according to a formula. It takes the pixel value of the Multiply layer, multiplies it by the pixel below it, and divides by 255. (Everything in Photoshop is a greyscale ramp from 0-255, 0 being black, 255 white.) The division removes any white from the image.

Loved the video and don't wanna badmouth the artist, but there's something bothering me in the portrait that I can't quite put my finger on. My best guess is it looks over-rendered, almost as a crutch to hide his weak, imprecise brushwork under it. Maybe it's the values that are too similar. Maybe I'm just too attached to guys like Sargent, who instead of trying to hide their brushwork to simulate reality (or a photo), gladly embrace the brushwork to create a sense of a "hyper-reality". I don't know what I'm talking about though, it's just what I feel looking at the final result.

That's just a pattern. You can create and paint with patterns. Dithering is something else. It's not painted, it's created when the bit-depth or color palette is reduced, like in a "save for web" function.

That's about as cheap as you're going to get.
>But I can't stand that flaky crap they sell sometimes with the knockoff brands.
That's all you're going to find, at prices below Jerry's or Blick. A Strathmore 400 series (damned good paper) pad 8x10 at bulk pricing at Blick is $3 each. You're not going to find lower than that, without getting into dodgy shit.

Sunny scenes are all about crisp, unmuddied colors, bright highlights, and strong shadows. Learning to paint realism is practice, trial and error, and studying the colors in the scene - you have the best tool for it with a computer, you can use the eyedropper to look at the hues in a scene.
You might also want to study artists like Monet, he was all about light and color, and his pallette and paintings are a good way to see how to capture a sunlight garden.

>>3029998
well i mean, i'm pretty sure dithering is just the general term you use for that dotted pattern effect that you see a lot in pixel art

For cintiq users: how do you handle photoshop shortcuts? I've been using an intuos for 10 years and my free hand is usualy hovering over the keyboard for the probably tens of shortcuts and modifiers i need for a speedy workflow. I couldn't do that comfortably with a cintiq. Having to go through menus would break my flow.
I would apreciate any answer as I get much better line quality on a cintiq and would like to switch.
>>
>>3022614
It doesn't bother me in the slightest, I actually love it when that happens. Then again I was taught at an art school where it was commonplace for the instructors to explain a process and show mistakes/how to fix them by doing paintovers (they'd ask permission first since it was traditional, but on an art board where someone is just going to do it digitally, why get upset?) Maybe I've been desensitized to it though.

It's my favorite kind of critique, though. A paintover means someone took the time and effort to think about what you were trying to do, the mistakes that were made, and is trying to show you how to fix your painting.

I get that critiques can strike a nerve with people who are new to it (especially the anons here) but if it's bugging you just remember someone's doing it to help you, and you can always choose what to take away from it and what to ignore. Also, get less attached to your art, and grow thicker skin if you're gonna hang around here.
>>
>>3030229
Cintiqs have way more programmable shortcut buttons built in to them than intuos. If those aren't enough get a gaming keypad for your non-dominant hand and use that for shortcuts.
If you find yourself going through menus for things that are too complicated for a single shortcut , then you can use actions in photoshop to make your own. Check this out, it'll help with your workflow.
https://www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/making-your-life-easier-actions

You can also use a program like sketchbook pro where all the menus are designed for tablet users.

Draw large and light, and try to work clean - erase the hairy lines that happen but be real gentle with it, if you use a light touch and lots of layers of pencil plus a kneaded eraser, you can gently pick up graphite and clean up to your best ability as you go. It shouldn't matter too much when laying in tones. Just try focusing on draftsmanship

Just draw from your imagination, and use what you're learned in gesture to help you with character design. Try doing symbol drawing now that you have an intimate understanding of your subject, then play with it and make it look good.

You can do this anon!

How2save Photoshop brush guise?

I have a certain brush I like but there is a particular change I made in the preset settings that makes it even better, and I want to save change that as the same or as a new brush, quickly. The brush settings are confusing as fuck. How do I achieve this?
>>
I updated my Wacom drivers and now I have to press exactly 5 times for my express keys to work (not all of them, just the ones I use for zoom in and zoom out, rest work fine). What the fuck did I do and how do I fix it? I always have a settings backup, so I already tried going back to the one I used before the update and it still doesn't work.

It's weird because it's not "sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't", it's exactly the fifth time I press it. Every time.

On the Brush Preset palette, click the menu icon on the upper right (it's 3 lines), and select "new brush preset". Name it. It will show up at the bottom of the brush menu.

I would highly recommend you get a book on Photoshop, and learn the interface. Deke McClelland's books are excellent. If you can afford it, the tutorials on Lynda.com are excellent (Deke does a lot of them). It's $25 a month for all you can watch, and you can buy a month at a time.

I see plenty of Japanese artists who are bad at drawing but at least decent to even good at rendering.
Why do tons of artists with with awful anatomy or terrible line work but still do ok rendering?
Is rendering just easier then drawing?
>>
>>3031154
yeah I would say drawing is significantly harder
>>
>>3031154
Because rendering has a simplified process to it. Drawing is about understanding the thing which for example anatomy, you can't fake it. Rendering can be faked too, you just might not notice it.

There will be a transition phase for you, I had one, switching to a 24HD cintiq. The Express Keys are just enough to get work done, but I just bought a spare keyboard and keep it under the Cintiq. The Cintiq I have has a spare USB port, so I plug it into that.
I have my most frequently used tools set on my Express keys and wheel:
Left is Shift/Alt/Windows key/Function/spacebar (pan tool), the wheel is set for rotate/zoom (don't use the third), right is set for x (switch background/foreground), D (reset color tool to B&W), Select None, Redo/Undo, and the button on the mouse is Function (eyedropper when painting), erase. Anything else is set up through the radial menus Wacom gives you as a plug in, or I use the keyboard. I see a lot of people in studios and offices I've visited, they get small wireless keyboards and velcro them to the top edge of the Cintiq. I'm fine with one below the sidplay (I have my Cintiq on a dual monitor arm, I got rid of the Wacom boat anchor stand it came with.)

Check out the radial menus plug in from Wacom - it makes a huge difference, I can drill down all of the menus with it. It took a little trial and error setting it up, but I wouldn't use the Cintiq without them now.

how do I make a pdf out of multiple images?
>>
>Exported RGB image to CMYK PDF
>Opened it up
>Colors weren't faded
>"What the fuck?"
>Opened it back up in Photoshop
>It's still RGB according to the little info bar at the top
>Different version of the same image correctly exported as CMYK and is listed as such
Why is this happening? Is it because the one that claims is RGB still has its original layer information? And I know about the color shift and all, I'm experimenting with some things so it's all intentional.
>>
Any tips for simplifying/blocking out long hair? I guess also any tips for making hair feel realistic too? I can't tend to make hair seem like it's affected by gravity that much.
>>
>>3031302
What app are you exporting from?
And, what color settings do you have set up for CMYK export? This will tell the app what color profile to convert to when processing a PDF. You set thing Color Settings, or in Bridge, in Color Settings, and share those settings out with all Adobe apps.
When you "Save As" and choose PDF, the "Save as PDF" Dialog box has a place to set for what color profile to convert the images to. Most likely you had RGB chosen there, because it overrides the "Save As" dialog.
PDF files won't include layer information. The color space is attached to the file like metadata, and is controlled by the Open and Save dialog - you can open an image and convert then (not recommended), or choose a profile, like North America SWOP 2.0 (standard for offset 4 color printing) when saving/exporting the image.
The only way for the image to retain the RGB color space is the PDF export options told the App to keep it.

Does gouache rehydrate the same way watercolor does?

IE if I fill a pan can I just apply water and go, or should I keep it in the tube?
>>
>>3022979
I don't think that's too much of a bad thing, it's just that the norm is most people will find their niche and generally stick with that, or go through phases slowly etc. The thing about painting, drawing, and watercolor, or any other drawing medium, is that all the fundamental aspects of drawing still apply regardless. I think if you're worried about inconsistency in your work, the first area you'd want to inspect are your fundies, so things like proportions, lighting, and color. I think what you might find, is that while studying these aspects, it's a lot easier to do so when you stay in one medium. But, whether that's a good or a bad thing is for you to decide.
>>
>>3032259
Yes, gouache can reactivate. Gouache is just watercolor paint with more dense pigment. I would still keep it in the tube though as much as possible.

But your active pallete you can keep and let it dry if you want.

>>
>>3032302
Google "draw through method" and you'll see what I mean or even "FZD Homework"
>>
>>3032259
Yes. You can use water, or if you want it like it came out of the tube, fresh, use gum of arabic, a drop or two at a time. Too much will make the guache shiny when it dries.

I'm really struggling with pricing my commissions. I'm currently doing character design commissions of D&D characters, but I can't tell if I'm overcharging or undercharging. Every time I start working on one, I underestimate how much time and brainpower it takes to design a character from scratch based on a text description, and by the end I feel like I'm not getting enough for it. However, whenever I'm about to give someone a quote based on their inquiry, I feel like I'm charging too much.
Can anyone give me a look and tell me if I'm charging too much or too little? These are some examples of designs I've done, 2 different styles and their respective prices.
