This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Wtf - OP wasn't in the last thread. Why didn't you pick the Wendy's ahegao?

Because he is a fucking asshole. He regularly picks things that are pure shit or his own work over others. People have been here close to a year putting out dope work and never see the op. Some asshole comes in and scribbles gets the op. Fucking garbage. That 2b oilpainting type thing would have been great too. Already there are 2 images in this thread that should be the next OP image.

I have been in this fucking thread so far back I remembered when you posted that Chuunibyou image of Rika with the oversized sweater. >It's a change of pace thing.
Just because its been done before doesn't mean its welcome.

You realize at least 3-5 times a month there is this drama about the fucking op image right? Its not just about me, I feel the same for others I see putting out good work and growing. I never have linked my stuff and said 'this needs to be the op image' because thats fucking selfish. I just want the best to represent US as a community and as a thread. I want our thread to shit on the other generals here with how good it is. I am fiercely competitive and the fire to get better drives me like others here. Lets make our thread the best we can okay? That image being cute is irrelevant to my concerns. Other people have done cute things here too. No one gives a shit about your personal opinions okay? I appreciate you coming here and making this thread and sharing your wisdom with us. I just want you to put your personal perferences aside as much as possible and be more diverse in your OP image selection. I mean if I wanted OP image it wouldn't be hard because it would just mean making some generic tumblr tier shit. This isn't meant to be personal its just you pick the same stuff time and time again.

If you want to make threads with cute images go to /a/ or /w/

It's like we were all enjoying a movie together, and you are the little kid who walks up and changes the channel to watch Teletubbies.

Can you just take a break from making new threads? We were doing fine before you came over. There are enough of us who have been in alt for years who know how / when to make a new thread.

For fucks sake can you at least do the following
1) take off your trip - then we won't know it's you being a spoiled brat
2) wait until we hit bump limit - on multiple occasions you blow your load too soon with your choice selections
3) at least pick something original from the thread or /ic/

I won't go into details of what I'll say (mostly because I don't think I can provide them to you in anyway you can really benefit of), so I'll give an overall of what I think of it

>clothing
Suit is drawn pretty well. Take a look at how clothes and fabrics work when it comes to people wearing them/creases
>perspective
not bad at all, there aren't many complications in it. The more you practice and learn it, the better it will get.
>that hand
Learn how to draw hands, specifically fingers, more. But, you're getting there
>head
the top part of her head really seems to be too big in proportion to the rest of the head. It mikes the face seem way smaller than it actually is.
>>
>>2949116
Idk, I just have a basic understanding of perspective, and kinda just loosely make lines, representing buildings, or whatever the background is.

Just a quick doodle lol lel hahaha funny XD
Seriously tho...I think talking about my thinking process for observation drawing will help anyone willing to critique my drawing.

When i start a sketch, I work from one point of the, in this case, face, and work out from there measuring the angles and lengths of other things relative to the starting point.

It's kinda inspired by contour drawing in which you don't take your hand off the paper. I noticed it produced nice results though it requires a lot of focus and for larger subjects, the "Starting mark" needs to be longer to reduce measuring errors (not to big not to small relative to the whole subject)

I didn't use construction but I'll learn. Pretty much all I can do is copy things but I'm not perfect at that either.

Well that's a shame. Thought about altering the perspective, but that seems like the lazy way out. A "good' artist should be able to create a dynamic piece from any viewing angle... I messed with the curvature of the poses to try to suggest motion, like "the book" says.

...Troubles of an amateur.
>>
>>2949568
Can I suggest you try and depict pressure and weight in your figures?

Show tension and exaggeration of the figure. The orc in your second pic is preparing to swing down with full force at the mage so show some indication that this is causing tension on his body possibly by having the torso twist.

I think looking into animation would help a lot in your work especially in terms of, what is called, "anticipation"

The mage could be drawn hunching her head and shoulders inwards to indicate fear.

Don't forget to think about the figures centre of gravity. A strong motion often times involves THE WHOLE body not just a few areas.

I think the problem is that the clothes and hair look static too, like they posing rather than actually doing the action.

they look like they are posing rather than doing an action.

Not bad but clearly incomplete.

Nice for a sketch, not so much for a real drawing.
>>
>>2949599

I understand what you're saying, I'm just trying to visualize the changes to the poses. Working from imagination is tough.

I think I'm going to try watching some quality animated combat in slow motion... Work on that "anticipation" thing. I can visualize what you're saying, but I can't freeze the sequence in my head.

Any suggestions?

Shitty redline but just trying to get my point accross.

Try thinking how their muscles would be flexing and how it would look like if they were trying to put effort in their actions.

I tried to make the hair messier like if they just moved a lot or was in the air, moved some body members to make it look like if they were in the middle of some action (for example, the chick in the right looked more like she has been posing rather than actually fallen or in the anticipation of caught something, so I tried to changed it like if her right arm was trying to reach or caught something, mover her neck like she was about to get up, changed the way her left arm looked in relation to the body by making it look like she was lying in it, etc.)

Also wrapped the clothes around them if they were being pulled in a direction rather than just being static (notice the wrinkles around the belt of the ogre)

Added a little sweating that made it look like it fell from the ogre

etc.

Looking better, but the cloth still looks a little out of place in terms of lighting/shading; I think it has to do with the fact that on armor, you used a lot of little hatching-type strokes, whereas the cloth has a lot more of a soft-shadow type effect.

I think it's the lack of detail/design on the house. Look at houses around yourself, often they might have plants in the front, or piping on the side, or even damage on the walls.
Try giving this house some more character. Who lives inside of it? How would they decorate the exterior? Do they try to keep their front yard well kept?
>>
>>2949952
Is alright.
>>
>>2949757
filling the white with details or coloring.
>>
>>2949901
Also, I feel the lack of depth is a hindrance as well. Those singles above the door look paper thin, perhaps you could thicken them up a little? The side windows also seem to be pasted on rather than built into the doors/walls.
>>
>>2949969
What kind of material is that street made of? And why the fuck is the architecture so weird in Japan?

I know the details are important, but are they the key then?

The quality on pic related, for example, we could say then it is related to the way windows, doors and all that are portrayed? I'm kinda lazying up on everything because I'm really concentrated on the wall, but everything I search for reference is either pure white or almost it.

I may be autistic, but whenever I have a problem in a piece I want to find the "essence" of what is lacking, like what I definitely could not forget to put in. The barrier between the professional stuff and the amateur.
>>
>>2949990
I think it has to do with the fact that you haven't seen it yourself, so it's not realistic and able to relate to. Pretty much immerse yourself into Japanese houses and know the ins and outs. Check out Google maps and walk around Japan.
>>
>>2949901
>>2949990
Maybe it's your composition of detail? The one example you posted is being cut into thirds with the sky making up the last fourth of the entire image, while yours is the entire house taking up the frame and is split into halves. Maybe something about how widely spaced the divisions are make yours look even more sparse.
>>
>>2949990
Imho details are what make a home feel real and lived in. It's like walking into a model home vs. one that is actually lived in. In a model home everything is too perfect, too pristine without clutter or uniqueness, while a lived in home will have all sorts of odd decorating choices and usually won't be perfectly clean.

Looking at the photo you provided, it has a lot more details, like the design on the railing, the telephone lines in the back, and the porch light. All of these are things you would expect to see around a real home, but are absent in your picture. Walk around a neighborhood, look at more photos of hoses, pick up on trends and incorporate them into your picture.

Additionally, I feel the close angle of your drawing might be constricting you. I can't tell how big the front yard is, or how tall/wide the house is from this angle, which further prevents you from showing the building's personality. I know it's difficult to redraw the whole thing at this point, though, so just remember it in the future.
>>
>>2949990
The image you posted reads well without any wall texture because 1, it's not a close up, 2, it has a much better value structure with sharp cast shadows, darker tone contrasts through the window and ceiling and more interesting smaller shapes to break up the main shape of the house. Plus you can see some nice grain texture in the shadows which might be accidental paper /print texture, but it gives the illusion of texture on the wall.
>>
>>2950001
>>2950002
>>2950014
Fuck, I always wanted to believe composition was not that necessary, just a bonus. It's too abstract for me to really grasp it, the rules are so loose and confusing.

Maybe I will redraw it trying to think about the shot a bit more.
>>
>>2950020
Composition is about a fundamental as you can get, it's honestly more important than stuff like anatomy, perspective and rendering if want to draw readable and interesting illustrations.
Assuming this is an establishing shot comic panel, you should be thinking about how easily the reader will be able to deduce the location. Show enough of the location so the readers know the environment. Often it's helpful to show the entirety of the building so it's not left ambiguous how big the building is.

I'm really really trying to get back in to art after 2 years of life getting in the way.
I just get discouraged so easily because I hate what I draw. To get back in the swing of things I'm going to start some life drawing classes to regain some skill and try to not feel like such a shit when I draw.
It makes me feel terrible and I just don't want to draw after because I feel like the worst. How do I overcome this? I just wanna git gud but negative feelings keep feeding in to each other. I dunno where this came from because I used to be so determined and it didn't bother me because drawing shit is just part of the process as long as you learn from it, but now it just makes me feel like a loser.
Pic related, I drew this last night and while initially I was excited when drawing it, I had to force myself to finish. I look at it now and I'm embarrassed of it. What do. I feel like it's holding me back from progressing.
>>
>>2950409
The answer is always to draw more.
>>
>>2950413
Yeah that's really the huge problem, and why I'm hoping life drawing classes will help with that.
When I draw and see the finished result I just think it sucks and it totally demotivates me because I feel like an idiot for wasting so much time drawing that 1 thing. It's like this viscous cycle. The less I draw the more my skill deteriorates, but when I draw I get discouraged because I feel like I've gotten worse/it looks like shit, so I don't draw, which makes my skill deteriorate... it's really fucking shit.
>>
>>2949871
I would suggest first using a larger brush size with a slightly lower opacity (95%ish) when first sketching, I find it tends to be less restricting, more easier to draw a "flowy" piece this way
also as >>2949881 said, gesture is key!

>>2950409
the chromatic aberration kinda hurts
I know your feel though, anon, what I found was that doing studies was a way of drawing without hating my art, and eventually those studies fed into more skill when actually drawing what I wanted.
Also maybe keep drawing lots of sketches/thumbnails before committing to a piece. Doing some more work and planning beforehand will make you hate yourself less in the gruelling painting + rendering + polishing process.
good luck!!

are there any good books in japanese about anime/manga drawing I can buy on amazon.co.jp?

By the way, I'm a complete beginner at drawing, but I want to try studying from the start in anime style, skipping realism. If it doesn't work out I'll revert to the standard approach. I have a strong suspect that drawing, especially stylized drawing, is more a matter of "memorizing" a huge quantity of different variations (ie you can't draw well a character in a certain perspective if you haven't ever drawn that perspective before). I want to bet on this conjecture and document my progress from day one, saving every single drawing

Don't use books, just analyze your favorite artists around, it's the best method by far to study styles.

Is that big blank space in the top right a window? If so, obviously use that as the primary light source. If not, I'd put a big spotlight on the group in the middle, not too high-contrast, like a sunroof. For the characters on the sides, you have windows, so use them! They're going to be darker than the focal point, but you can still make them visible. Pics of dozens of characters inevitably have some that get lost, but you already chose the important ones by putting them center stage.

>>2950916
Legs look good because I'm sure they're highly referenced; give the same attention to the feet and hands of course. The real problem is her entire upper body looks like a different person just pasted on; she has a petite, skinny torso and neck, a somewhat small head, and moderately toned arms on top of these T H I C C legs. Give her some more meat. The very top of her chest poking out of the clothes is also tilted a bit too far forward, and she's not actually resting her arms on anything, which makes it feel awkward. Nice background, too.
>>
>>2950949

Okay, I'll elaborate. Look at how other artists stylize hair and then try to apply what you learn to studies of photographs. At least that's what's helped me improve.
>>
>>2951527
When you don't know how to stylize from reality, look to other people's stylizations. Good artists copy and great artists steal, and all that. Pick out an artist you look, examine their style of drawing hair, and copy it for yourself, and keep doing that until you have several different stylizations to choose from. Pick the one you like the best, modify it to pit your own personal preferences and aesthetic, and bam you got yourself a way to draw hair.

I also find it a little odd that the right edge of her face is one curve, when it should be multiple curves indicating the contours of her face (cheek bone, transition to the chin, hollow of eye socket, etc)

Yeah the eyes gave me a bit of trouble, I flipped the pic several times to see what I could do and I just couldnt figure it out.

you need serious perspective training. the body is heavily referenced and it works, but as soon as you try to apply your own stuff from memory (the face) everything falls apart. if you hope to ever be able to draw good stuff without having to rely on references as much as you do now, you will have to learn perspective and construction.
also, cross hatching should follow the planes of the forms. what you are doing here is too scratchy.
>>
>>2951747

I did my best to follow the forms, that's what concerned me the most when shading the figure, I tried to use reference for the face but it just didnt click I guess.

I looked at a lot of different reference to figure out what worked and what didnt and tried to cobble together what i could.

I know plenty of construction and perspective, but as you can see I'm just not very good at application lol.

I'm trying to do a visual novel CG sorta thing, but-- I dunno, I'm not happy with how it's turning out. I have no idea how to draw anime.

It's still really rough and needs a lot of work, (Such as actually drawing in the background) but I figured I'd get some fresh eyes looking at it to point out any glaring flaws I've probably overlooked. Any thing you might have to say about it is greatly appreciated.

(I was playing around with the values and trying to get the lineart and forms of everything looking well before I started screwing around with color, so everything's black and white still.)
>>
>>2951797
That texture on the top left is both kinda shit and doesn't works well with the rest of the shading. You looks like you try to make it fit the shape but it's a total fail.

Just try to do it by hand. I'd say.

A follow up for this: I screwed around with the lineart a bit, mostly simplifying and exaggerating to get a more anime look.

I might have gone too far with the exaggerating, but I think it's going in the right direction-- if I give her hair and clothes the same treatment and cut down on a lot of the unnecessary details it should help a lot.

>>2951805
That texture is just a temporary thing-- it's supposed to be chainmail, but I hadn't worked up the courage to draw a billion rings by hand or dick around with photoshop, so I just copypasta'd some scribbles for the meantime.

You need to start thinking of it as armour and not tight-sitting clothing. How is a human (especially male) head going to fit in there? You could make the shoulders wider, and also try to increase and adjust the chest and stomach so it stops giving off that feminine waist-tightened look. Furthermore, the values are way too dark. Lastly, in the future, try giving the character a more interesting and dynamic pose. Other than that, I really like the design

It comes down to this, you've either been told a dozen times the same thing over and over again it would be futile to tell you once more, or you're so bad telling you otherwise would be a complete waste of time.
>>
>>2952929
There's a lot of decent artists here who get hardly any critique, though. I'm just going to assume this is because it's easier to point out the flaws in lower quality works, because there are more flaws, and high quality works, because the few flaws are more obvious. With middle of the road artists it's harder to concisely and clearly state the issues with a piece.

>>
>>2952990
Are tangents bad
>>
>>2952991
Yes, they decrease the readability of your image. For example, with the between the thumb an the button makes it more difficult to tell which object is supposed to be closer to the camera, as they seem to be touching each other as if they were on the same plane. If instead the button was overlapped by the thumb, it would be much more clear that the button is in the back and the thumb is closer to the viewer.

How do I go about improving this.
>>
>>2952915
usually there's a very specific skill range/style an artist has to be going for where any feedback i can give is actually useful to them

>>2952973
ironically it's the middle of the road/people closer to my skill level that i'm able to give more worthwhile feedback to

with more beginner artists me rattling off things like "okay this muscles and this muscle and this muscle and this muscle in this tiny bunched up area should be arranged in this way when viewed from this angle, also you should go for more natural posing and think about the composition/silhouette and how you crop certain blah blah blah how that adds to the mood, also body language" that i've learned over the past few years here mostly just overwhelms the newer people

also realizing that at some point i'm instructing people how to redraw parts the way i would draw them and not how to actually approach the problem and come up with their own solution

>>2952991
tangents are neutral, depends on if they get in the way of what you want to achieve with an image. if you want to flatten an image for stylistic reasons they're very powerful, especially for simplifying designs, but when they get in the way of legibility or mess up perspective/distract the viewer's eyes they're bad news bears

for the current style you're going for you most likely want to avoid them for the most part, but say something like dexter's lab or panty & stocking or what have you, it's a slightly different story. even a lot of comics make use of them compositionally to create certain effects. that said, any tangents found in your work should be intentional and serve a deliberate purpose, for without one they are just distracting.

You should have pushed that food thingy a bit more to the left to create an overlap with the head instead of creating such an awkward tangent. Always try to show depth through overlaps whenever you can. Having 2 objects right next to each other when they occupy a different plane in space makes them appear flat and awkward.

>>
>>2952559
The biggest issue I see with this is the lack of dimension and depth.

Go download Loomis from the sticky, and work through 'Fun with a Pencil', focusing on constructing the figure with 3d shapes.

As for hair, once you start constructing the form of the head a bit more, think about how it'd lay upon and fall off the head. A cheap way of making it look less stiff is to try and add some expression into it; have it reflect the motion in the character's posture or throw in some wind or something.

Go through Loomis, then try drawing some screenshots of your character at awkward camera angles and weird poses and you'll start figuring it out.
