I'm sorry but I really hate your style. The legs look like you added a little bit of form to them while the upper body is completely one plane and paper thin. Hmmmm
>>
>>2941218
Most of these faces are really cute, but like the anon said, get rid of the outlined shadows. Animu artists who use them do it when they're drawing the plane of the nose furthest from the viewer and abstract the nose solely on that plane. Once you actually start drawing the nose, it makes no sense.

Really like the poses and expressions, by the way.

Are these all /co/ girls? I recognize Shego, that one redhead by the Ren and Stimpy creator, French ladybug, and Rapunzel.

I enjoy the pastel, seamless kind of look it has, but the face looks distorted around the chin-cheek area. Lower the top half of the face and see how it looks. Also, any chance you could do a without-glasses version?

Yeah that makes sense honestly. I think when I started doing it orginally a couple pictures ago it made sense and I just kept doing it out of context y'know? Gotta remember when and where to use it for next time.

Thank you though!! and yeah, they're all /co/ girls. I believe it's shego, edda and xiulan, mccafe commercial girl, aunt grandma, suzanne, mcclellan, monica, rapunzel, and lady frenzy. I'm honestly not sure where 5 of them are from but I really liked their designs

it looks really appealing, but i feel like there is something off with the anatomy. i think the legs are too long? really not sure
>>
>>2941284
A lot of images (particularly drawings) aren't reverse searchable. It's probably from some old abandoned DA of a 12 year old kid with no following or something.

There's been a lot of posters (or just one bored guy) seemingly posting art of other people, lately.

knowing me, this sketch probably wont make it any further than this--

Does anybody else ever get that feeling? You start working on something, get decently far into it, then decide to work on something else, never to return to on what you were working on before? I haven't finished a drawing in what feels like ages because of it.

Maybe this is just another form of the whole comfort zone thing; I'm afraid to get past the sketch stage.
>>
>>2941334
i totally know what you mean. sometimes the smallest things like "hm i just dont wanna draw hands right now" put me into a position where i just stop drawing on one thing and leave it to rot, even if i could probably finish it..
still, i like your sketch anon. i think you should keep going.
>>
>>2941334
I really feel you, man. It's only been in the last year I've actually brought sketches into a near completed form (still unsure of how to tighten up a drawing), which is a nice feeling. So I do think it is a bit of a comfort zone for a lot of people.

Have you tried going grayscale and see if that makes moving past a sketch easier?

Also, love the sketch. Bottom girl's mouth looks a little odd, though.
>>
>>2941334
I don't understand how drawing can be comfort zoning. I mean sure if you're drawing the same stuff but there are a million different things to learn about drawing. Unless you're drawing like kim jung gi i don't see how drawing can ever be a comfort zone.

Anything can be a fun activity you fucking retard. What i'm saying is that you can't say i'm comfort zoning because you're only drawing since there are a million shit to learn in drawing from perspective to anatomy to composition. It's only a comfort zone when you like drawing a front view animu head over and over again.

your lack of gesture makes those poses look more like they're actually just posing for the camera instead of really doing anything.

like on the top left with the guy holding his sword mid-swing, it looks more like he's just holding it and not actually swinging it.

There's no weight to anything there, they all look like they're just stiffly posing for some camera.

Straight VS Curve

Variety in shapes - simplify certain areas to give shapes area of rest vs complex areas of noise
>>
>>2943190
lol...
>>
>>2943225
there's something odd going on with those tree leafs in the upper left, either aliasing or a texture that at this point in the illustration clashes something fierce with the rest of it. also the bottom of the frame of the pic next to the holly golightly poster my sister has in her apartment seems, like it dips in convexly while all the other corners seem nicely flattened off. again this could be some weird aliasing going on on in what i presume is just you screenshotting the work window. also the shadows under the bookcase shelves are are clipping over the white thing there, whatever that is going to end up being (or already is)
there's also a bit of green showing through on the white background of the holly golightly poster

i'm guessing this is all stuff you already know but just double checking, i've forgotten to go back and fix a few minor things like this and fuckin kicked myself after i hit upload/submitted them to the AD

from a stylistic standpoint i will say, i would super suggest simplifying that poster of holly, it's much more complex compared to everything else in the image. don't worry, it's a crazy iconic image and you can get away with only a few boxes and rectangles that still create the same basic silhouette

also the roundness on the middle poster i was nitpicking the frame of, there's no roundness anywhere else in this background approaching those curves, i would simplify that more too to fit with the rest of the aesthetic.

the books in the upper right feel a bit too complex shape wise near the top, maybe clean those up a bit more to fit the aesthetic as well

over all i almost want to suggest putting more stuff in the room, or at least on the bookcase but i'm guessing this is a background for an animation or at least that's the direction behind the assignment so in keeping with the style i think it's probably okay

few more things i wanna say but ran outta space, sorry for rambling, meds just kicked in, hope this helps

>>
>>2943694
just make the fire come out on both sides. There's really no other way to balance the composition considering the subject of the image is right smack in the middle of the page and the line of action is indicating towards the bottom of the canvas.

If the fire comes out on both sides, it'll help lead the eye more to the subject rather than trailing off and it will look a little more dynamic.

this is full of symbol drawing, you probably didn't construct the face based on actual proportions. Also, this isn't emulated at all, this is a generic tumblr art style. It looks like you went out of your way to make his nose big and ugly. if this wasn't so stylized, this would look obviously bad

Any good guide/tutorial/book to draw "anime" eyes?
Something that actually explains the proportions, the mechanics, perspective and "logic" behind the stylization?
Also something that relates and compares the realistic representation with the "anime" stylization?

Also your concept of spoonfeeding is too far fetched.

>anime requires a book that explains detailed rules and proportions and mechanics

¿?
Well "anime" certainely requieres rules and proportions like anyother kind of art, right?
There are always good and bad learning material
That is why people recomend Hampton or Vilppu books instead of other ones.
Thats why people recomend K&R C instead of Schildt books in CS.
I have never seen any good book on anime drawing, imho they are all bad ( poorly explained) or shit like how to draw manga by katy coope.
I understand that is there is no secret book but surely good learning material helps A LOT.
Also I understand that the basics of drawning are the same no matter the stylization and that I should learn to draw before
trying to stylize something.
I was just asking what are the most recommended material on this topic.
>>
>>2944365
anime is literally the stylization of reality

if you need to read a book to learn how to stylize then you're fucking retarded.
>>
>>2944339
>sounding like you were actually going to trace other anime eyes before asking this outstandingly vegetable-tier retarded question

I always thought that I should try to understand the logic and shape behind something before trying
to draw it and that I should draw as much from my imagination as I could
Should I do this? Should I trace a lot of eyes, Will this help me?
>>
>>2944369

I haven't really seen any decent books on eastern stylization, but I imagine the better ones are written by non-Westerners. You could also try flipping through art books of anime series that you like to see if they break down their style at all. American animation studios tend to do that for the art books of their productions so I think Japanese studios would do something similar. Let us know if you do find anything decent on the topic?
>>
>>2944883
books on how to stylize are redundant, it's really only for people who don't know their fundamentals because the best those books offers to you is how to achieve a particular look by altering shapes and forms from how one would usually draw a human figure or anything else of the matter.

Once you remove all the lectures about how to draw shapes and forms, all anime books amount to is the author of said book teaching you how to pretty much draw how they would draw anime. You're not going to learn anything from the book, the only thing you will have accomplished is how to copy someone's style because you paid money for their book.

And yeah some books will have a small section in it that says some stupid shit like, "anime eyes are always 3/4 bigger than regular eyes and the facial features are like such and here's a rough sketch to how anime is officially drawn I should know" but again you'd get better education just fucking reading up on how to draw shapes and forms and building your detailed drawing from that cause that's basically what the fucking book is teaching you but in the shittiest manner imaginable.

Anime tutorial books are the biggest waste of time and exists only for faggots who don't want to learn their fundamentals. It also doesn't take a genius to be able to grasp the general characteristics that encompass the anime aesthetic. If you already know that anime has large eyes and a cartoonish figure you shouldn't need a fucking book to tell you how to draw like that if you learned beforehand your fundamentals.

basically: you're fucking retarded

When did anyone say anything about throwing fundamentals out the window? Knowing other artists' workflows and how they approach stylization in addition to having solid fundamentals can only be helpful.

>anime is literally the stylization of reality
Really?
Dude, chill
>>
>>2944902

How to Draw anime books are regarded as a meme but in actuality a lot of these books are pure gold if you want to draw in said style.

The reason you think they are shit is the way they are presented with minimal information. This is how Japanese school children learn; they take minimal information and use that as 'case study' in groups with their classmates. These books ref'd to American books like Jack Hamm make a great combination.

Don't blame your stupidity on why you don't know how to study. How to break down information is a skill unrelated to art, and very few of you guaranteed on this board don't know how to do. So...
>exists only for faggots who don't want to learn their fundamentals
Is not true. This used to be the case in the early 2000s with Americanized how to draw anime books but even authors like Chirs Heart buckled up his trousers and hired actual legit artists to illustrate his books.

Study real eyes first, and get a grasp of the basic forms. Anime eyes are still "eyes" and believable ones require knowledge of how real ones work. For example, anime eyes tend to have some minor features removed, like the fold of the upper eyelid, the indentation of the bottom lid, the caruncula, and wrinkles (unless it's intentional).

Drawing from reality will make your anime better!

Your line weight makes no sense at all. You've outlined the whole drawing like it's a sticker with an absurdly heavy line, then left the rest of it in this very light thickness.

I'd recommend you erase the outer outline and adjust all of your line weights to properly reflect what's happening - thicker lines for closer objects (the tips of the fingers) is one possible rule.

Similarly you'll need to vary line weight to deal with tension and relaxation in fabric and hair. Softer creases in fabric should taper off near the ends to 0 line weight and points of tension should similarly taper off, whereas sagging cloth and bunches should thicken up.

tl;dr learn to line weight before actually using it and don't say the sticker bullshit is "muh style"

Stop drawing on lined paper. Take better photos and resize your work, up the contrast and brightness on Photoshop if you have it. Good perspective, but stop scribbling, focus on making confident marks.
>>2940781
>>2941204
I hate your style, please get off MSPaint or whatever you're using, draw with a pencil or use a better program. Your colors are basic too, stop drawing anime. Get back to your fundies. Sorry I’m being harsh but you’re only wasting time drawing this stuff.
>>2940782
Decent, just work on your value structure and composition before you start adding so many details. The light logic is also a little weird, and the highlights are a little dark, but overall kawaii-desu.
>>2940882
Pretty good, the hair and vest are weird, I would love to see you paint the whole figure with the same attention to detail you did with the face. Good job.
>>2940910
Look at your thumbnail, I can't see shit. I know you want it to be dark, but start with a good value structure and then if it still isn't dark enough you can use some adjustment layers at the end.
>>2940964
Super cute, only thing I can see wrong are some inconsistencies between the faces.
>>2941101
Good start. Wings seem a little low and the face doesn't look like its sitting on the head correctly, but keep going.
>>2941139
I can't really tell what’s going on here, definitely do a couple more gestural drawings of the pose like >>2941197 suggested until you find one that works. Also take better photos of your work.
>>2941218
Everything looks okay, it's just not appealing to me for some reason. There are some minor proportion problems. I think it's mostly your compressed values, bump up the saturation and contrast a little bit.
>>2941264
>>2942668
Alright, I like your stylization, and I really like the flat colors and what you did with the hair shape, but holy fuck stop with the intense highlights, tone it way done. Clean up your brushwork a little more too.

Really great energy, I like it a lot. The poses are just a little weird, let them stretch out, also what is the red spine-looking thing on the bottom? Good job on this one.
>>2941334
>>2941833
Good pose and construction so far, watch your tangents and fully draw the hands and feet! They're super important to your rough drawing.
>>2941446
The length of the upper legs compared to the lower legs seem weird, all your colors seem really light for how dark your outlines are. Decent job but to me this is neither cute or that sexy for some reason.
>>2941497
Pretty much this >>2941508. The scribbling is fine for a rough but make sure to go over it with more confident lineart later.
>>2941526
I don't like the white outline, look at J.C. Leyendecker for good examples of that. Pose is a little awkward, and the warm palette is interesting but I don't think the gradient background is helping anything. Construction and anatomy needs work too.
>>2941553
Can't tell if trolling? (if not then I would suggest using paper and pencil before working digitally, you're very obviously a beginner and it'll be faster to get that mileage in, also make sure to read some of the books in the sticky too.)
>>2941619
>>2941847
Pretty good start, legs seem a little weird but at least it feels like she is actually resting on the ground, try more variation of lineweight and don't lose your gesture when you're cleaning it up.
>>2942186
Really stiff pose, don't forget color temperature while you're painting.
>>2942665
Look at more references while you're drawing the clothing, the pose is okay. Also a blue background was a terrible choice for somewhere wearing all blue.
>>2942671
Interesting work... I would say work on a delineation between hard and soft edges, and ffs don't sign it unless you've sold it or else it just looks refrigerator-tier.

Really stiff, I know you're stylizing it but look at more cats while you're drawing. And if you want help with the design look at the cat from Kiki's Delivery service or even the cat from Persona 5.
>>2942797
Really good critique from >>2942807. If they're clashing swords you they're pushing their weight onto eachother, so you have to draw them as one unit. Look at the painting Stag at Sharkey's. That being said good start!
>>2942903
Foreshortening is a little weird but let's see how it looks painted.
>>2942909
Good ideas with the design but the pose and expression are kinda ambiguous. Really think through the logic of the fur and feathers. Personally I also think you should try a different approach to your lineart, it's not appealing and it looks like it took forever.
>>2942934
Look at the sticky, draw from life, draw what you see not what you think it looks like. And don't draw anime in the beginning.
>>2942974
Good basics, only tip I could give you is try to stay out of that uncanny valley, either push the realism more or push the cute or sexy angle more.
>>2943050
Cool line quality but fundamental problems in the hands and shoulders. You drew the tits but see how low her hips are?
>>2943169
Hands are small, but good job on the foreshortening.
>>2943201
See >>2943238. Cool stuff, you got a voice in your work, just don't be afraid to change it up.
>>2943225

>>2943445
>>2944044
Stylistically this is pretty interesting, I'd say fuck it, just finish it and see how it turns out. I think the white makes it look unfinished, try adding a background.
>>2943648
It's cute, sometimes that's hard to capture, other than that its really beginner, but it depends what you want to do. Illustration? It needs work. Webcomic, good enough I guess. Check out the sticky.

This has some nice drawing. Your colors are really muddy, mix up the value range and don't forget your color harmony, it might be good to pick out a palette beforehand. Clean it up.
>>2943796
Cute, not making the most out of your pixels.
>>2943871
Good job! The value structure of your figure is really similar to your background, find a way to pop it out. Also the lineart is disappearing in the darker sections of the painting. But keep going!
>>2943924
Good start but the rendering gets muddy in some places. Don't overwork it.
>>2943929
Cute but stay confident with the brushwork. Also the purple doesn't work for that well for me, and watch how it tangents with the neck.
>>2943976
Good line quality but brush up on your anatomy, the shoulders, feet, and hands are a little weird, use reference if you have to.
>>2944144
Cute! Clean it up but don't lose the nice gesture you have. Don't give me excuses with the iPad, paper and pencils are cheap as fuck.
>>2944169
Take brighter photos, the way she is holding the sword is super weird. I'm not a huge fan of your style but try drawing some variations of the pose.

>Relearning fundies and need to learn to color.
Keep doing that and look at more clothing references. This will help with the folds and also your atrocious fashion sense.
>>2944277

You need Loomis.

However, I think purely from a design perspective it's pretty good. I like her poofy hair and how the pattern on the shirt matches that on her headband. Keep drilling your fundamentals and working on her.
>>
>>2946567
I'm new to the /ic/ environment but I did grab all the Loomis pdfs, started with Fun with a Pencil. His method of blocking out facial features, must that always apply or only if you're drawing a character who could benefit from it like a comical chubby guy?
I appreciate the praise for her design. Is it alright if despite being striped, her headband and shirt have different color patterns? Headband is black and white, shirt is pink and blue.

Always; it's construction. You don't always have to draw the underlying construction, many artists don't, but you certainly have to understand it.

I'm not trying to be a Dobson but I don't believe you can just tell someone to go back to basics. It comes off as you knowing something is wrong but not wanting to put effort into articulating it. I did notice myself that when the canvas is flipped it looks wonky. I've been working on a digital do over of it which makes it more consistent. That's not exactly feasible on paper though unless you wanna get weird with a mirror.

Give the shadows consistent depth. Since the overhang seems to be made from some kind of metal, it would reflect a bit of the reflected light from the glass door onto the wood above the glass, making the shadow less deep there. And double-check the shape of the upper overhang shadow and the lower overhang shadow.

Been a while since I posted, but I do legit need style critique/advice. I'm putting a lot of effort in the developing the "how" in how I do things.

I've switched from screentones to watercolors, as I think they look a lot nicer, and overall, they're a lot more flexible than screentones.

I think I'm overdoing it with the hatching though.
>>
>>2947422
Nah, the crosshatching is fine.

You shouldn't mix screentone with grays though, you should keep it to one or the other. They clash a lot.

Original poster here.

Something a bit more realistic is ideal for me and I think would make your artstyle much more appealing. Main things that make it ugly is the plastic hair and the cheap eyes and weird eyebrows.

Over-cartoonish realistic style is too oversaturated these days because it makes hack artists get away with not doing good realistic faces and instead just filling their lack of anatomy with cartoon. Just gotta keep a good dose of realism in your cartoon so it doesn't look ugly.
