I use a $40 Huion and its really good and sturdy. I had to get a replacement cable after a year and replace the pen's nib, too, after a year, but it includes lots of spares and i paint a lot so I wore it down after lots and lots of use.

how do you study art? i first thought you could learn from placing a construction over a piece, but not everyone draws the same way. with portraits you bullshit away from the General Model to draw actual people that aren't a robot regurgitation of loomis. even the old masters didn't draw 100% accurately or without mistakes.

The visual standards for entertainment keep getting higher and higher. I get extremely depressed when i see things that have high production value.
I'm always grinding, always learning stuff, trying to improve, but there's so much to learn and my dreams are so far away that it's torture.
AAA visuals keep getting bigger, better, and more expensive. As a person who's always wanted to make their own IP it feels impossible and hopeless to ever compete.

Hey anon. I feel you really hard. (I'm attempting to make my own IP as well, and having to make music/art/story all by myself if a bit difficult lol.)

Like >>2938824 said, I think you need to be a bit more positive. Look at your old art and see how you've improved, and know that you can only get better if you're working as hard as you say.

Also, I might get flack for saying this on /ic/ of all places, but your art doesn't have to be flawless or anything. See pic related- the artist has a loyal following and multiple IPs despite not being the best in the world. I think the story, and the ideas you want to convey with it, are more important more than any fancy high standards you speak of. The worst enemy to creativity is doubt! So go do something good. d('-'d)

Why are girls just so much better at drawing and stylization? Artists like vivziepop it looks like it comes naturally to her and even male artists like sushio concede and girl up their art.
>>
>>2938892
Along with a stronger ability to smell, a large percentage of women worldwide have four cones in their eyes. They see the world more vividly than men. This is why they have a natural ability with color harmony and stylization. Albeit they cannot translate the colors they see into pictures due to the limitations of software today, rendering this superpower useless for audience.

While women make up the majority of artists in the world, men take the cake at professional positions at renowned studios simply because of work ethic.
>>
>>2938898
So basically they just are naturally gifted artists and I'm fighting an up hill battle. I suppose I could just look at and study my favorite artists works and develop that way whether they be girls or not.

I need some help planning an upcoming panel. At first, I was thinking I'd do a 50/50 split on lecture and demo, but now I'm considering just making it all a demo. I would really appreciate any input you guys have.

The panel is going to be focusing on finishing illustrations using traditional media. Basically, inking and coloring using alcohol markers, watercolors, and watercolor markers! Did you guys know that was a thing? They've changed my life.

Anyway, the target audience of my panel is going to be people who mainly do digital art and have little to no experience with finishing art using traditional media. Basically, they'll know how to draw and what the end results should look like, but not how to get there. It's not exactly going to be for total beginners. Initially, I had planned on dedicating a good chunk of time of my allotted two hours to a Powerpoint presentation of the various types of materials. However, now I'm thinking it might just be better to condense that information into charts and just go straight into the demo.

My question is, would you prefer the lecture-demo hybrid or would you prefer the pure demo with the chart handout? I would also appreciate any other ideas you guys have as well. I still have two months before the panel, but I want to make sure everything is as perfect as I can get it. I'd really like everyone to leave the room having learned something.

I bought a Huion recently after working for years with a Wacom.
Wacom was the best tablet a few years ago but developed into a prestige brand like apple.
Sure, their products are still top tier, but you basically pay half of the price for the name.
I see no reason to buy a Wacom over a Huion any more, especially after I saw Huions quality myself.
Huion also has really great customer support. A company that cares so much for their clients deserves a chance.

What are some good resources for approaching environment design digitally?
It's definitely my weakest point right now and last semester I had a teacher that while a great artist, didn't explain himself particularly well. A lot of it was him just slapping shapes and shit onto a blank canvas until he thought it looked good (and it did) but I never really knew what was happening in his head, especially when it came to perspective and composition.
>>
>>2939482
Any brush tipped marker will do. Here's my thing with Copics- are you going to refill them? If you absolutely, positively are, they are a GREAT investment. If you're going to buy a new marker every time they run out, you are a retard if you buy Copics. There are a lot of great brands out there nowadays, so go to your local art store and check them out.

You stop relying on motivation and willpower and instead rely on reasons why you draw at all. You need reasons to pull you back in when you start getting sidetracked. I used to have art block almost every other week and one lasted me three months once, but now that I have reasons, I haven't had a block in about two years.
>>
>>2938715
You study by studying and practicing over and over. Theory is almost worthless, but getting in and practicing is what matters. If you want to draw the trunk of the torso, you have to learn the muscles beneath, if you want to draw a face, you have to study the skull beneath and learn all the planes. It isn't like school, you have to really get in there and practice hard. I actually prefer a block in then I define the planes for my approach, it might work for you. Never forget to find multiple references and planes are the keys to good values and lighting.

Hello anos, I'm 19 years old and I love art, I practice everyday, from fotos and real-life stuff . I have a year of pure practice. I was wondering what is better. if take a college degree of fine arts, pay an online school of fine arts or online classes like CGMA. I want to be a good artist and get money making art. Specially concept art. that is my dream. What do you think? Some of you maybe is experienced with this. Do you think the companies like just the portafolio or the degree is requirement.

>>
>>2939868
They only care about your portfolio. Exceptions are if you're doing overseas stuff like Asia wants a degree, or high profile places like Disney and stuff. Any school is good, just pick one. As long as you keep learning, it doesn't matter what you do.
>>
>>2939886
Obviously not much. Does the size of a car matter to a new driver? No, not really.
>>
How do "confident lines" really develop? What's a good way to develop them?
>>
>>2939891
They develop from experience. The more times you've drawn something, the more you know how it'll go and what not to do. It's not just drawing a lot, it's like if you draw the same anime face, you'll get good at drawing that same anime face. That's confidence.
>>
>>2939893 Should I just draw straight and curvy lines until they don't look like I have Parkinson's, then?

...That actually sounds like pretty sound art advice.
>>
>>2939505
The Noah Bradley level up YouTube episode kinda covers this a bit
>>
>>2939906
You can as practice, but don't make it your main thing. You have to draw like actual stuff. There's a different mindset for drawing a line and drawing a face for example. You have to think about proportions and feature spacing, maybe design and what not. If you're just busting out lines, that's all you think about is perfecting that one line. There's not really steps you have to think ahead which is really what drawing is all about. To know what those steps are will get you more confident. The steps for drawing a line are simple. They're not for something like a spaceship unless you've drawn a lot of spaceships.
>>

I do it because I love it, not for recognition. I don't feel my ego bloat anymore when someone compliments, but instead thankfulness and if someone was to insult me, I wouldn't shut down because I do it all for myself. If I wasn't getting paid, I'd still draw the things I love because I love drawing those things.

Another reason, I have more fun drawing and painting than doing anything else. This didn't come naturally, I had to earn this one by changing the way I see some things. As long as I keep drawing, I keep getting better, video games are just an empty waste of time that means nothing.

And though the first reason makes me sound selfish, I also draw for everyone cheering me on, I have lots of people relying on me.

Last reason: what the hell am I going to do with my time if not what I love? Go to college for four years and become an emotionally dead tryhard asshole in some cubicle so I can get praised and worshiped by other tryhard assholes and get bullied by my bosses and be in a hole of debt for decades? Kek

Because I have reasons now, I never drag myself to my workstation, but instead I excitedly get to work. I hope you can, too.

no you fucking twat. what we considered aaa is getting cheaper to produce thanks to stock libraries, captured data and real life to games tools.

if you have the entire $150 set aside specifically for a tablet, get wacom. if you wanna save a couple of bucks but are ok with some minor issues then the 1060 is fine.

Are there any good resources on how to design strong silhouettes? I know some of it is inevitably just grinding, but I'm sure there are some tips/tricks that people use. I know that for a strong design it should generally be recognizable as a silhouette and I see a lot of concept artists start with one from scratch and then add detail on top.

Have a question. Im fairly new with digital and i just went from PS to SAI. It feels much smoother so i do like it more, BUT i hate how the opacity in the brushes work on SAI vs PS. Pic reated. Does anyone know if theres a setting i can change or what i can do to make brushes work like it does in PS. it gets so annoying at times and if it wasnt for that then SAI would be almost perfect for me. please help!

so I want to get into digital drawing instead of pen and paper. I've heard it is different than drawing on paper. I dont really like the idea of having a pad and a screen is it best to go with one thats a full touch screen if you have the dosh or would it be better to learn on a draw tab instead?

Not necessarily, though feedback and advice from your more studied peers can definitely help you improve faster. I'd recommend going onto DA and finding a critique group or going on the forums if you're still a beginner and are scared of scathing criticism. >been trying for 3 months now to create my own blog where to upload shit daily
>what's stopping me is creating a new email address and being embarassed to form an artist alias
>every idea I have feels cringy as fuck
how the fuck can I get over this shit?
I do not wish to use email that has my actual name in it but just making the new one to be something like "[email protected]" doesn't leave a good impression to people
it's nearly impossible to make an address that isnt incredibly embarassing or littered with numbers, every good one is already taken by some fucking 10 year old that uses it to register to club penguin
Might even consider buying an actual address and not make a free one.

How should i proceed?
I really want to draw but when I draw without a place to put my drawings to, it all feels like it serves no purpose, also it'd create a nice backlog of works which I can compare my latest works to eventually
>>
>>2942738
Why not just make a Tumblr or Deviantart for now? No one will see your email except for yourself for the most part, and both those services allow you to change your username later down the line, so just make up some throwaway handle for now and change it once you think of a better one.

You are worrying way too much about this. Take a few steps back. Look at the usernames of a few of your artists. A lot of them are set up like

>their name + art/artist/etc.
>initial + last name/first name + last initial + art

My art name was literally me rearranging the letters of my cringy old xbox live alias.
Just make it something somewhat nonsensical but pronounceable in one or two syllables. Don't make it some retardedly long name, don't add a bunch of numbers on the end or people will assume you're a spambot. Google it to make sure it's not already taken by someone way more popular than you who will blow out your search results. Besides that nobody overthinks it.

Hey guys, I have a question about line quality.

With pencil and paper, my lines are pretty okay. I can use my elbow to make quick line strokes. But when drawing digital my lines are very sloppy. The tablet is slippery and I can't do an overhand grip with the pen. It's almost like I've never learned to draw.

I see a lot of good line work here in digital and so I wanted to ask you guys how you got used to doing lines with the tablet. Is it just a matter of practice, something you get used to over time? What about drawing from the shoulder or overhand grips? Any particular tips to help get used to it?

Your lines are pretty hairy but that's normal when starting out. Eyes are pretty good, some of the spheres are wonky but at least they mostly show the form.

The left box with lips is a lot worse than everything else and you probably know that, but the way you did the box makes me think you're not really aware of the basic perspective. I'd say flip through perspective made easy and acquaint yourself with vanishing points, it'll make everything else a lot easier to grapple.

How do you get better at creating diverse and creative outfits?
I can never think of anything interesting or detailed, and it's really frustrating
I feel like I should be good at it, because I love fashion and spend a lot of time coordinating clothes and stuff in real life, and normal clothes are ok to draw, but anything fantasy or sci fi or out of the normal just comes out super plain

first of all. you're not painting with density turned on. which is what allows you to control the amount of paint on the brush with pen pressure. second, there is only three ways to use transparency 1) layer transparency 2) the marker brush 3) dilution on a separate layer.
third the reason you get those defined circles is because you have your edge hardness all the way up. turn that shit down. thats only useful for line art and other technical shit.

other things are only paint with 100 density never change that because you're changing automatically with your pen pressure.

also the blend option next to size only deals with color. it has nothing to do with actual blending.

yes you can
only with the blend brushes.

the ones with dilution, persistence and blending.

you can leave blending at 0 because that just deals with color. have persistence at 100 so you dont get those gradients in the strokes. lasly dilution is basically opacity. it paints with whats ever in the canvas. that includes ALPHA or transparency. like on a black/empty layer. thats what dilution does. the only thing confusing about it is that its backwards. 100% is completely transpareny 0% fully opaque

now the thing is you'll have to create layers everytime to get the transparency effect, once u get too many colors on the canvas it starts picking those up.

If you want to withdraw money you have to get verified and in order to get verified you have to attach a bank account or some kind of credit card and I think paypal will get suspicious as a fuck if the names on those are different to the names on your paypal.

Sucks when you have a unique name with a unique spelling too, and anybody can just google search it and find out who I am.

When I do commissions for furfags and they request really kinky weird shit ($$$$$) I love looking them up based on their paypal name to see what kind of people they are.

I'm usually unsuccessful finding them by name but the ones I have found are usually just mid 20's awkward guys and i feel like a bad person because i'm no different for stalking them.
>>
Been thinking about drawing porn as a backup plan. I understand the vanilla market is super competitive, but do I have to go full degenerate? I'm cool with doing feet, monster girls, exhibition, dark skin/tan lines, and maybe some giantess, ntr, and light tentacling. Am I going to have an audience?
>>
>>2948730
furries are loaded with cash and will throw money at you all day if you draw whatever you want for them.
>>
>>2948730
you can kind of control what kind of audience you have based on what you post on your blog. I don't see the problem with doing commissions that are degenerate as fuck for money if you don't have to post it on your blog.

I'd recommend that you just post shit you like to draw on your blog, and just let your commissions be no holds barred.

How does one focus on their subject while keeping lines accurate? I often find myself looking at my drawings more than my subject because I know I'm not drawing it the way I want to.
>>
>>2949991
If you don't focus on the subject, your lines aren't accurate. You just look at your drawings more because you misplaced your lines. Spend some more time thinking or redrawing.

I wanted to join one of those fanart zine things for a show I like and even though I joined on time, I never got a reply.
Am I so disgusting not even weebs want to associate with me at this point?
>>
>>2950790
I've done a lot of zines the last year, so maybe I can help. How long has it been since the entry deadline? It usually takes a week (or a little bit over) for me to get an email about my status, but it's a longer wait for large-scale zines (100+ applicants) and those with only one or two organizers.

Honestly, if you do get rejected, don't feel bad. There's always going to be another fanzine project that you can sign up for. Plus sometimes they don't choose in terms of skill, but sometimes stuff like "oh, this person is only interested in drawing ___, but we've already got a hundred other people also wanting to draw ____".

Just shoot the organizers a email/message about confirmation, as well. They legit might've forgotten to add your email to the BCC list.

I'm not sure if there's a Tumblr/Twitter dedicated to posting updates on newly-opened zines, but I generally found them just by following people who participate in fandoms of things I also enjoy. They generally repost new fan projects. Maybe looking in the "zine" tag or searching "____ zine" might help?
>>
>>2950796
Maybe I am a bit too panicky since this is the first time doing something like this. The entry deadline was just two days ago and I got nervous since one of the organizers tweeted about wanting to send emails to those who applied yesterday.
I also didn't consider all the other things you mentioned, so thanks!

>>2950821
Hey, don't worry about it! I wouldn't be surprised if the organizers are held up by finals and/or graduation right now, too.

Whenever you watch gesture drawing videos the demonstrator gets the proportions right right away, or at least very close. Is this something you can only really do when you have years of experience or is it something you can get to at an intermediate level?

Basically whenever I gesture draw, I think the gesture looks ok but I always have to spend a fair amount of time correcting the proportions. If I sit down and start analyzing everything then I can do it but I certainly cannot just look at it once and get accurate proportions in the first pass.

I'm a total beginner and I've read the sticky and all that. Been drawing cubes and ellipses and whatever the fuck else the drawabox tutorials have had me doing. However, what I really want to draw is something like this. I don't want to develop Bad Habits™ but I also want to derive a modicum of joy from putting pencil to paper every so often while I'm learning. Was this based on a photo or did you use any particular construction techniques while making it? Making doodles like this at will is really the first thing I'm aiming for, since it will give me some reason to draw at all.
>>
>>2952150

drawabox isn't totally worthless, but drawing cubes and cylinders for 5 hours/day is how you get meme'd. you also need to understand that your art will be shit for a long time.

Yeah, just get a basic wapcom medium sized tablet. You'll need to get the skillset down eventually anyways. I wouldn't focus on it over traditional on a training basis, but it'd be silly not to ever use it. And its not like the tablet is going to go bad either.
A medium is only like $200 as well.

Where should I go to find a highly-skilled artist that draws in an anime art style and is accepting commissions at the moment?
"Highly skilled" enough to take a cute girl and draw her doing some cosplay while making everything look really nice, clean, and sexy. Something around the level of pic related or better.

I don't really care about cost. I'm well off enough to drop several hundred if I really wanted to on this.

No idea if this is the right thread or even board for this (and I looked, but found no other more appropriate place), but I figured I'd ask since it's a question thread. If you want to tell me to fuck off and direct me to where I should ask this instead, that's fine too.

What do you mean by "sideways"?

I hold them to the side of the paper but the nib needs to be pressed on the paper at a certain angle. That is, you can't use them with the tines turned to much away from the paper. You can turn the nib over completely (180-degrees) and draw with the back side of the pen, but not halfway (90-degrees).

To put it another way, you can hold the pen mostly how you like, but the pen has to be "turned" the right way or it won't draw or write well. This also varies from pen to pen, I'm a cheap ass, I mostly use Preppies, but I hear Lamy nibs have narrower drawing angles than less proprietary nibs, etc.

Usually the way you get a thicker line is just pressing down harder, but it depends on the pen.
>>
>>2953361
Alright, thanks
But when you draw with the back side of it, does the line width change?
I'm getting tired of managing micron pens, and so I'm looking for a single durable pen with controlled line variation
>>
>>2953413
>But when you draw with the back side of it, does the line width change?
Yes, it's thinner. A medium platinum preppy is like having a micron 03 and 01 in one pen.

>when you draw with the back side of it, does the line width change?
Using it upside down generally gives you a finer, drier line that often feels scratchy. This varies from pen to pen, so don't buy one expecting to rely on using it like that.
If you want line variation in a fountain pen you won't have a good experience without a soft 14k nib and a feed that can keep up with it, or a specialty nib like a stub, fude, etc.
"Soft" steel nibs like the Noodler's pens feel like garbage and require too much force to be used comfortably.

I have the same fear, honestly. I think it depends on what exactly you're making-- if you're just painting random dragons and shit, no one will really care, but if you draw fan art of popular things and/or go on to make your own series, then yes, probably.
Maybe you could just post your works on pixiv, but I suppose that'd require a basic understanding of Japanese and interest in anime shit.

That's because you can't see the horizon and vanishing point. They're not in the image. Which is a thing you learn about perspective is that they don't have to be in the image.

The horizon line is where the eye level is, which is from above since you're looking down.

How accurate should I be on a general basis? Let's say I just want to do some quick studies of some characters, should I sit there and slowly work up the entire thing until it's completely accurate shape to shape, or is it fine to end up with something that's 'generally' accurate, to the point where things aren't completely the same, but there's nothing obviously wrong?

Basically, where is the line between laziness and expedience? Speaking as someone who will obsessively work up a lay-in to perfection, not as someone looking to take the easy way out. Do you always aim to get a perfect drawing, or is it fine to take a loose approach to studies sometimes?
