did a self portrait. trying to parse what my next step is. I think this level of exactness isn't really doing it for me. I want to work looser, and do measurements dynamically, as opposed to freehanding it or measuring and doing a drawing on top of the measurements. I'd rather do a good drawing everytime than a great drawing half the time.

Tried to go for tribalistic but somewhat mixed with modern/futuristic designs. Writing it now it does seem kinda weird, but it sounded better in my head with a scenario and all I guess. bottom one was kinda random, right is geometry centric. And hopefully you can guess what the left one represents.

I guess more realistically it was about an hour and 20 minutes what with model breaks and stuff.
It feels quick to me though- in one portrait class I'm in, we draw for 30 minutes, break for 10, and draw for 30 again for 6 hours, and the poses last 3 different class sessions.

It looks like you've used a image as reference. So if you have, take it and open it in photoshop (or gimp). Then open the drawing in the program as another layer and set it at a lower opacity so that you can see the other image through it. Makes it very easy to see where you fucked up

Things that are better in your first comp: value ranges, specifically in the bear and wings and the fog around the bottom.

The arms looked better framing bird person.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond man! Are you talking about my messy sketch or my shitty 3d block-in though?

I was going to try and bring my final image closer to my initial sketch in the end. I might even bring squanchy's (the bear thingy) hand back down so it hugs one of bird persons wings or something. I don't like tangents but I also thought it kind of worked for the composition. I haven't really went into designing squanchy's "ferocity" yet. Just referencing some hairless cats and bodybuilders. He's going to be super hairy, drooly and ferocious in the end. I promise...

For detailed areas, you should focus putting the details mostly in the lit areas.
It is too easy to lose the shadows when you start fiddling around in that area.

I tried painting over to demonstrate how you could approach it. I think it looks better when you follow the 3D model for the shading.

I think you need to use more hard edges when you're rendering. Your base sketch was really neat, but your overuse of smooth brushes are making some of the forms look blobby, so you might want to be more careful about your brushstrokes as well. Also, there's going to be a lot of reflected light from each of the surfaces so keep that in mind especially for the hips and shoulder joints.
>>
>>2933995

I have a theory that you can tell when somebody starts shitposting when they pick posts ambiguously that include bad and decent drawings and call them shit, and then do the same when they praise other things. It's how tripfags are so effective at riling up threads. I would have fallen for the same guy too if he didn't take so long to reply to the other guy who called him out.

Those paintings only had a couple hours spent on them, so they're just compositional maps for tone and colour more than anything, there's very little rendering as of yet.

But if you think they're really bad then say why exactly, that is the point of these threads.

I just saw your post so I'll post where I am at the moment.
I've continued to overuse smooth brushes and it all just feels "off", I suppose. I was thinking about just finishing all the basic shapes (which pretty much is where I am) and then try and give it a bit more character.
Not that I really know how, though. I'm pretty much just "fake it 'til you make it" right now, and I feel that it will blow up in my face.

And the casting shadow is a placeholder so I can get a sense of where the ground is and the direction of the main light source. I'm going to redo it from scratch later.

>>
>>2934919
i really really like this, dude. in terms of values, i guess if you want to keep the skull with the super stylized rendering you've got there, i would knock back the values in the bg so that there's more contrast, making the skull stand out more.
>>
>>2934919
Render lots and lots of basic forms then tackle more complex ones. I learned lighting in /beg/ through critiques so I recommend it. Also it's easier to first learn values in black and white before trying color. Steve Houston's Laws of Light is very good.

The Stilted Ram 5.jpg

Still slowly fussing with this. I plan on tweaking the ram's legs to make them look less distorted, maybe add more people to fill out the scene. Other than that I dunno I hope this will all come together in the final stages as I'm not really feeling it yet.
>>
>>2934965
I'm loving the foreground, anon. The head of the ram seems a little small/the body and base of the neck are kinda bulky. Also, the forelegs look far apart, I believe ram knees are also more inward facing. Honestly you could just move the foreleg on the viewer's right to the left, and that would also make it not look like it's on the verge of falling. Do you have a blog or anything where I can see more of your stuff?

Also I'm curious, do you guys draw base sketches and paint over them on the same layer, or do you multiply a layer on top of a sketch, merge later when you're satisfied, and render from then on?

Really digging the stylization of the flowers and especially the eyes! I'm such a sucker for bottom lashes being emphassized.

I think everything works with the exception of the hands and left-side arm. The right-hand hand cuts really awkwardly at the wrist while the left arm just looks awkward the way you've got it diagrammed like that. Jus drawing the full arm would've made it look better, imo.

Bit improvement from before. The foreground feels a bit dark though, even for being in shadow. Also the clouds look very unfinished compared to the rest. Is there a reason to top is cropped off awkwardly like that? Otherwise it looks nice though.
>>
>>2935890
Thanks anon

>>2935893
Hm, yeah I tried making the foreground brighter but it just didn't feel right to me. Guess I have to look into values and color theory again. Also, usually I'm a sucker for rendering clouds but this time I tried to convey as much as possible with very less rendering and keep the focus off the sky. But now that you mentioned it I should have done a bit more, at least better work with edges maybe.
Well, that's why I post here, to live and learn.

19th century town with a huge ram with spikes impaled on its head, not very interesting.
i guess it just comes down to personal taste, and this piece and many others of yours dont tickle my fancy.
i'd recommend looking at pieces by accomplished illustrators for say magic or whatever and see what they're doing, maybe even take a bit of inspiration from how Riot handles league splashes in terms of bending perspective and in doing so creating a more interesting and dynamic comp.
what i'd like to see you do personally is do more pieces akin to the crow beast you did, idk if that's its actual title but w/e

if you're not going to spend the time on background stuff then just suggest it, don't scribble it in. similar kinda deal with the face, don't draw a cartoon face on the figure just for the sake of having a face, just do some general tones if it'll fit with the rest of it better.

please, some lighting help? i don't know how to deal with directional light/showing form through light. thanks!
>>
>>2937632
Honestly the drawing in this is a bigger issue than the lighting. THe boobs are tiny and bolted onto the ribcage in an awful way, one arm and hand is huge while the other is tiny and stunted, the pelvis makes little sense, and the femurs are really long. Lighting you just need to decide the direction then simplify the forms in your mind and paint the values based on the planes.
>>
>>2937642
thanks for the critique! you're right about the anatomy, i should've paid more attention (and really i'd be the first to admit that i don't know how to draw boobs lol). will try to fix

can you please elaborate on the lighting stuff? i know that much but whenever i try it fucks up...

m8... those shadows dont make sense. you have 3 different types of shadows. on the top you have a shadow point up, on the bottom you have a shadow point down. and then theres the forground shadow. wtf

How do I get as good as you? This looks like employable work for VNs. I've always wanted to do BGs, but I have no idea how to get the ball rolling.
>>
>>2935827
This looks really nice, anon. It looks like a prospective animation background.

How did you do the detailing on the roof tiles and brick work? A pattern then warped around to fit the perspective?
>>
>>2937073
>>2937077
I still think the blue background mess is a negative to these. It's not so much the idea, it's just the colour choice makes everything chaotic and causes it to be very hard to look at. Personally I think it actually ruins the pictures.

Yeah, it is an commissioned background for a Visual Novel. And I painted the textures like the bricks and then warped them, spot on anon.

>>2937752
The shadow pointing upand those other ones on the house are right since me base was a quick 3D light render. And the bottom which I suppose you mean is not a shadow being casted by one of the pillars but by one of trees. Also the hill is rising up towards the house which distorts the shadow. At least I thought it would look that way but if it's mistaken and mangles with the perspective then I guess I fucked up on this one.
Nevermind.

Thanks, though it will probably look different when I'm done with it, I'd done a much smaller study in preparation (10x12"), this painting I'm working on is the biggest I've attempted outdoors so far, 20 x 24", four times the size.

You think the rock is maybe a little cold though? There's a lot of green moss and ruddy tones on it I'd like to introduce, but I know it can get fussy if you break up a plane too much with detail, and the appeal of this boulder is how bold it's planes are.

And this is the real life rock, I exaggerated it's height and tilt a little. Like I said I'm working plein air, not photos, so you have to time it right for when you want to work again, so I have a lot of different pieces on the go.

There's a lot of basic drawing errors here. The features are misaligned and not in perspective well.

Otherwise I think just controlling some contrasts better will help. You have too many hard edges in places where they can be softer such as around the lips, at the terminators etc.
>>
>>2937829
you are thinking too much about local color. find the brightest spot of your painting and base all your midtones and darks around that one spot.

i feel like i didnt explain that well... light isn't just light. Some light is stronger than other light. Depending on how bright the light source is, thats how dark the area you are painting should be.

If light sources go from 1%-100% a painting with a 100% light source would be very dark to create the illusion of a very bright light, and if it's 1% you'd probably be fine doing closer to local colors since the illusion of the light source would be very slight.

here's an example of a still life I did where I used that. Everything got painted and mixed darker because the light source was like 30% brightness.

I didn't handle it as well as I would now this was a painting from february, but think of if you're painting a white plate, and it has a reflection of the white light source on it. You have to make the plate much much darker to make the reflection noticable. You can't just paint the whole thing white, even if locally that's what the colors are.

>>
>>2938325
Too much contrast. You are going from pure white to pure black, and you are both overexposing areas and underexposing areas. Try to work more in the middle values and only compress the value range in one or the other of light/shadows.

Brian right? I'd recommend using larger brushes rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, it took me awhile to get comfortable with large brushes but it makes for more uniform tone, which is appealing, and saves time.

I don't necessarily see anything "wrong" with this that I could critique, but it's unfinished looking, so if I were you I would put more time into it and think about a goal.
If you are just doing a portrait of some kind of fantasy/scifi creature, I say render it out a bit more and call it finished, because overall it looks pretty good. One thing I thought of though could be its positioning. Maybe tilt/rotate the whole character counter-clockwise just a bit and give it a neat but subtle background.

what i really need to work on is my smaller brushwork. I have a hard time bridging the gap between finer details and larger areas. like where the tiny branches meet the sky. it's hard to be that accurate. i guess thats why people buy those maul sticks.

Nice, those "ugly" stereotyped brush marks that represent trees no longer look so ugly and stereotyped because they're now part of a composition and interact well with the house.

It still lacks something though, I believe it lacks (cool?) shadows on the ground or some sort of foreground. It needs that last step of depth
