Should I take my time with lines or do them somewhat quickly? This may sound stupid but I feel like I fuck up if I pay too much attention and go slowly when I try to copy an image.

Line quality is more of a confidence thing and it just comes with practice.

Yes, both will last you a few months. Keys to drawing after right side.

I mean, I'm not terribly worried about line quality at the moment. For instance, in this exercise I screwed up a lot with where everything is relative to each other and so it all came out kind of out of place.

Aside from Loomis, do you guys have other favorite resources for learning how to draw faces?

This is a question for any anon that would like to answer.

How long did it take you to break free from symbol drawing?
>>
>>2891663
Honestly, I think it didn't take me long because I wasn't an idiot and understood what it meant to draw what I see instead of what I think I see when the teacher told me to. Of course, this only applies to animals, every day objects and sometimes flowers. That was many years ago, but I don't think it takes all that long even for beginners.
>>
>>2891663
It shouldn't take you long at all, anon
Just reading a few pages off one of recommended beginner books will show you the light, instantly.

It's actually harder to draw the lines 'quickly.' In saying this I mean it's harder to draw the line in an economic fashion; you have to work with larger line segments in your memory. It means you are also committing earlier. High-level analyzing skill is what makes quick drawing speed possible, not being able to control your hand quickly or rushing the drawing.

>>2891098
In the head, there are some confident lines. But a lot of the interior lines in the coat you 'petted' a line by using many little segments (literally the term for it).

It's good to break the line into larger segments, and it's also fine to not connect some lines (called broken-line technique). That should loosen you up and not make you focused on meticulously crafting the particular line in the drawing, also makes it technically easier to draw. Broken-line is useful for drawing longer line segments, people who use pen&ink do it all the time. I exaggerated a bit here so you could get the point. With broken line technique, never have lines break horizontally or vertically. You need to vary the location of where the lines break or it looks horrible.

Certain subject matters lend them selves to overlap of line, which usually makes breaking the line down economically easier. You draw the lines overlapping rather than the outer line created by the overlaps. Overlap is epic. Learn to use it well.
>>
>>2891497
>>2891503
If you can't finish your own work, you can't expect to attract clients. You have some anatomical errors, most glaringly in the arm and jaw area, but you're technically skilled enough in terms of your drawings.
Though becoming professional is more than skill, you need to be able to market yourself well.
>>
>>2891782
watercolor paper. the paint is watercolor. the ink is probably fountain pen based on lines.

Why are copic markers so fucking expensive? 70$ for a pack of 12, what the fuck brah. I need them to practice shading and finish dynamic sketching.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>2892149
It happens to everyone
Sometimes you see mistakes just a few minutes after getting away from the sketch. There's probably a name for this type of thing but I can't recall.

Anyway, it's the same thing with flipping the canvas - it's as if you're suddenly seeing a whole new drawing your mind wasn't familiar with. A different point of view, basically.
>>

Clip Studio Paint, cheap and gets the job done.
>>
>>2892363
I don't care about price because I can always be a dirty pirate.

Everyone seems to be using photoshop so I'm assuming that's the best?
>>
>>2892368
With how cheap CSP is I wouldn't pirate, but that's you.

I used SAI and PS in the past and moved to CSP. Sai is total shit really, only thing that's good about it is that it's super fast even on ancient computers. Photoshp has awesome brush packs and plenty of tutoials. CSP has stabilization (like SAI) for lines and great blending tools, bunch of free assets too.

It doesn't matter what people use really, some d/ic/ks are using Kirita creating amazing shit with it. But if you want a recommendation just use both and see what sticks for you. You might just end up using all three for different things.
>>
I've picked up drawing again recently after about 8 years
I had good skills when it came to background and people on paper but once I got a tablet I felt as though I hit a wall and couldn't draw using that and now my skills have gone down

So my question do you think I'll be able to get back to where I was fairly quick or should I expect it to take a long time after such a long break?
>>
>>2892368
You should learn all three, it'll be worth it.

But it'll probably easier to learn Photoshop first, since there's a buttload of tuts on Ctrl+Paint, minimizing software frustrations

What makes the difference between art that's just okay and great art?
>>
>>2892650
It's there for a reason.
>>
>>2892695
There's not a universal definition of great art and it is somewhat subjective, but things are roughly valued on criteria such as technical skill, originality, and style. As you get better at art yourself and as you look at more art you will be able to discern what makes something better or worse, at least to your eyes.

Am I getting ahead of myself? I just got done with the "pure contour" section of DRSB and I already feel like I understand what the book is trying to teach me. Like, I may be wrong, but I feel like the main point is drawing what I'm seeing, and not what I interpret the object as. Obviously the book talks about more than that, but this is probably the first step in becoming a better artist, right? One thing I really need to focus on is my accuracy.
>>
>>2893327

>>
>>2893335
Nope. It's okay to move on if you feel like it. Nothing's going to stop you except your conscience.

Since you're just starting out, you won't know yet, but you'll learn in the future that there are somewhat levels in understanding. Right now, you can only absorb so much of the information from the book, however when you come back to re-read the book in the future when you're much better, you'll learn something else. So, take what you can and move on.

You also need this strength of feeling like you understand things as well. Try not to doubt yourself, it might stunt your growth. When you learn something and feel like you can do anything, that feeling is the strongest aspect of drawing and if you lose it, you might quit.

I really like drawing but I never want to portray anything with it and I always feel like I'm not feeling the same things others do about why they do art. After some thinking over time I came to realize it's probably because even though I enjoy drawing and spending 12 hours a day on it I'm not passionate about it.

Is it possible to redirect the passion I feel towards vidya to drawing? Drawing fanart really doesn't do it for me and I got into drawing because of video games in the first place but I don't know how to enjoy creating and sharing my work.

You know what to do yet you don't do it. Since you lack control over your mind I suggest meditation to learn it.
>>
>>2894067
What? I wouldn't be asking if I knew. How do I meditate, anyways?
>>
Anyone have resources for learning visual storytelling, writing comic strips or graphic novels?
>>
>>2894079
It's simple, really. Essentially you're trying not to think about anything when meditating. Concentrate on your breath and whenever a thought comes into your mind, catch yourself thinking it, dismiss it and go back to concentrating on your breath. Dismissing thoughts and going back to a peaceful state of mind is like flexing a muscle over and over again. Learning how to control your mind like can be a powerful tool for many different aspects in life.

I suggest reading Sam Harris or at least listening to some of his podcasts on that topic. It'll help you understand what it's all about.
>>
>>2894293
Why waste my time meditating when I can just draw? Fuck that.

Stupid question: I know this isn't /g/ but please bear with me. I currently have a really shitty laptop(intel hd 3000 with 4gbs of ram). Is it possible for me to use a intuos comic with it(running clip paint studio)? I know absolutely nothing about art so I would just be grinding with beginner books and practicing things on the /ic/ sticky.
>>
>>2895177

I had the exact same setup and it worked without a hitch.

Exact same as in, internal graphics card laptop and intuos comic/art/whatever ( these are the same in different colors pretty much, aren't they )

if you are an absolute newbie prepare to be bombarded with people telling you to start with paper, because it feels much more natural.

they are right but if you want to do digital do it, even when your lines will probably be an absolute mess at first.

godspeed anon, it's going to be a test of resolve if anything.

>>2895458
If you're still practicing drawing, I don't think not being able to lift as much will have any affect. Artists who work out often are probably in the minority, even.

>>2895564
That looks like it's more for grip strength than anything. It might be a good exercise to keep your wrists limber but I doubt it'll do anything for dexterity and it certainly won't make you a better artist. I wouldn't waste my money on one.

I posted this on /3/ first for some reason.

Basically doing concept art full time for past six months or so.
I've completely lost any semblance of free time for practice/personal projects, the only way I see myself doing personal shit is if I turn into a literal robot and don't even use whatever two hours I've left in the day unoccupied.

On top of that if I stay late at least once I am completely fucked for a week because of fatigue.

Is there something that I am missing? Am I managing my life like shit? I sort of feel like I know the solution, if I go to sleep as soon as I get back from work on friday and stop playing vidya on weekends to get my mind off of work and instead go out/train/some healthy shit so that my mind is not thinking about vidya AND THEN practice art it will probably work...but I also need to fucking play vidya because that's the industry I am working in and my lead sometimes tells me to play this game or that game. Should I just sample games like some faggot purely for art and then drop them even if I get into the game?

Do people in the vidya industry not play videogames?

Anyone else feel that they're waisting time whenever they do anything besides art/studies? Video games and movies got me into art, but now I don't even play them because I feel so guilty. Whenever I'm out with friends just feel I need to get back home so I can finish my studies.
>>
>>2896683

I only feel that way when I haven't done "enough" that day. Just define for yourself what is enough (2/4/6/8 hours etc) depending on the day, get it done and stop.

Don't set goals for what to get done every day, just have a "system". You are going to sit down and draw for X hours even if you aren't motivated.

Spend the last 20 minutes thinking of material to study tomorrow so you can hop in the next day without having to think, just like laying out your clothes the night before.

Also having a separate work/study room is great. You train yourself to be in focused study mode just be entering the room. Don't do anything else in that room except study.

(Can just use a room no one goes in during the day, bring two chairs and a drawing board. Clip your reference to the drawing board, lean the drawing board against the back of one of the chairs and you got a makeshift drawing horse.)

Play games, watch movies. Just get your "study" done first. The worst thing you can do is be stuck in limbo where you are too guilty to play games/watch movies but you are procrastinating your study. That way lies depression.

I really need to start doing my studies the moment I wakeup because then I just find myself fucking around starting to draw half assed shit in the evening just to make up for lost time but never actively studying. Like today. Already wasted 6 hours doing a whole bunch of nothing.

Long time lurker and newbie poster. I did 1 1/2 years in art school and about the same at an Atelier. Lost my job and quit school and just focused on learning everything I could at the Atelier.
I wanted to have an art career because that's where my passion lies and after years of shit dead end jobs I needed something more.
I started having health issues and in 2014 I finally broke down. Couldn't afford said Atelier classes anymore and it didn't matter since I was in pain all the time.
I don't draw (or write) that much anymore. I think I just burned myself out and I'm still feeling the affects of it. I'm constantly inconsistent. Don't post hardly anything now (I was always bad at art social media anyways, super inconsistent. Could never get a commission as much as I tried to whore myself out).
Just started doodling this week after a 4 month block and it's been nice.
My main concern is I can't draw my own OCs. I love them and haven't drawn them since 4 years ago and that kills me. I think I worsened it by giving them an official real life reference and it put too much pressure on the whole thing. OCs stories change all the time and I can't settle down to any idea.
I know my talent is mediocre at best. I know what I need to work on and study. I'm just not a hardcore studier. Still have health issues that get in the way and that takes away a lot of my energy. I have all the books, Loomis, Hampton, Bridgeman, Hogarth, recently going through Gurney's Color and Light.
I gave up on an art career a long time ago, but art is still an important part of life like it's always been.
Just feel lost and stuck for the past few years.
Sharing here since I'm not sure where I could go and hoping someone out there has some advice.

Any alternatives to the tools presented in Drawing on the Right side of the brain (plastic, viewfinder etc.?

What exactly do you want with this post? encouragement?

Most people that care about art go through highs and lows of trying and failing, of hating what they do and quitting, only to come back months or years afterwards trying to get back up again. It's a vicious cycle and you're the only one that gets to decide if you'll continue down the same path or set a new road for yourself. So I ask again: what exactly do you want? If you're no longer interested in this as a career there's no pressue involved and you can get back to drawing for yourself, for fun. Start with that, and get back to studies to improve yourself later.

>>2897232

Everyone says ctrl paint is a good resource for beginners to digital drawing but there's like a million videos and I can't be fucked to watch them.

Can someone just give me a quick rundown on the basics? Like should I be using the pen tool or the brush tool? What are the basic differences? What are some good settings to use to do value studies?

When doing studies, I have the reference and my work side by side, but I often find that instead of drawing the reference I start drawing what I think looks right. Should I be trying to copy the reference exactly or should I simply keep the image in my mind and try to draw from that? Could that possibly lead to accidental symbol drawing?

So, do you guys have any advice on what I should draw on the side of my more serious stuff to earn some extra money? Is there one of these things that is easier to sell than the others? Or any other ideas of how to earn money?
>>
>>2897903
It depends what level you're at. You could draw what you think looks right, then grid or overlay the reference over your drawing and see how far off you were. That helps with learning proportions and spacing, I think. I think the sticky recommends trying to draw the reference upside down to avoid symbol drawing.

Is there any quick way to get rid of the thin white outline around my darker lines, and the random white speckles on this? The white outline isn't the same width all the way around, so I can't do a 1px selection. I also can't select and remove the color white altogether, because there are white parts of the drawing I need to keep.

It's taking me hours erasing/lasso-ing by hand.

Hey, do you guys have any good examples of studies for heads and faces?

I'm not really sure how to do studies. I usually end up resorting to trying to copy the ref too much.
>>
>>2898824
A study is taking one aspect and learning about it. It doesn't matter if the study looks good. It's for learning purposes. So if you wanted to learn say, the planes of the face, or perhaps the placement of the facial features. You would figure that out and call it done. If you wanted to do a value study or color study, same thing. Learn how it works then call it done. It doesn't have to look exactly like the ref.

Yes. Maybe you waste a lot of time making major changes that could have been solved quicker if you did more thumbnails at the start. Maybe you waste time cleaning up edges when you could have used layers with clipping masks to keep things clean. Maybe you could have saved time if you snapped a quick photo of yourself or a friend to use as reference. Otherwise the other anon is right that it will come with time. If you keep drawing a few pages a day for a few years your drawing skills should be good enough to quickly know what to change and how to show what you want to show.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to get steadier strokes on digital?
Is it about using a stabilization software? Just gitting gud? Do I just need to get used to the feel of a tablet compared to paper?

>>

Just get used to it. If it's a screen tablet there shouldn't be problems but with something like an intuos or a bamboo tablet you need some time to get used to the new hand-eye coordination.

If you are having trouble with getting those lines right, remember you can CTRL+Z, zoom in, erase inking errors and so on. Some softwares (like SAI) have stabilization which is very, very good for inking. Specially stabilization level 8~9.

It's mainly for printing. 72dpi is good enough for screen but if you want to print it in the future save them in higher dpi.

It also depends on how close the viewer will be to the print, for example if you're printing for a magazine, 300dpi is good but if you're printing for a large spectacular that will be viewed from afar you can print it in less.

I have a question for any Krita users here-My lines (especially with pencil) won't fully "render" or pop in with their full opacity until I'm done drawing them. Meaning I'll draw them and can see a faint line, but they won't fully pop in until I finish the line and lift the pen.

I can work around it, but it's annoying. Anyone know what's up or how to fix? I've read that turning off OpenGL could help, but I've searched through the settings and all I can find is 'enable OpenGL logging' under performance.

Can I study anatomy separated from proportion?

What I mean is, what if I study the 3D form, the shapes, muscle connections and creases, dimples and curves, without giving much though about correct/ideal proportions?

Can that work? Of course I would have to correct it lately to do serious work, but would the knowledge of form acquired through this be useful in its own merit?

One more thing: turning off OpenGL fixed it. Any ideas as to what I'm going to lose without using OpenGL in Krita?

no. unless you're planning on drawing for medical books, anatomy is all about proportion. if you really want to separate the two, you should master proportion before studying the details.

I guess it won't be too hard to learn, but I also want to know why people use them. Why do people open up a multiply layer to shade, when they could directly slap down a darker colour instead? Same goes for colour burn.
>>
>>2902688
is real life a good resource to learn digital? see how fucking stupid you sound?
>>
>>2902709
it's just a preference and it really depends on what kind of art you do. you should learn how they work before deciding to write them off though. if you google all these terms individually, you'll get your answers.

people use multiply to shade because it creates a glazing effect so your local color and shadow color "blend." it eliminates having to think of the correct hue and value for every color the shadow lands on. it doesn't always look good, but it's fast.

However I'I picking up a lot of basics right now but whenever I draw they will always criticise my work.

I'm open to critique but they just like picking out all the flaws and only approve it when there's something that they like (eg. rich colours, simple but clean artwork) It's even worse as my Mother used to draw but doesn't seem to be on the same wavelength. Any help here? I just want to learn at my own pace and in an neutral/encouraging environment.

why does FZD do all their fundamental assignments digitally whereas /ic/ recommends to do fundamentals traditionally?
>>
>>2906978
It's faster and that's about it. FZD doesn't care if you use digital at all actually.

>>2906978

thanks for the fast reply

on FZD's fundamental page most of the work looks digitally done, and for the time ive been lurking here I've seen more anon's recommend traditional over digital

I've been dragging my heels on learning to draw for at least two years. I'll doodle for a minute, maybe less, a day, and call it quits because I want to actually draw instead. What can I do to rectify this?
>>
>>2907152
Stop being a fucking faggot and draw already god damn you fucking lazy pieces of shit.
>>
>>2907152
I should note I've had drawabox and drawing on the right side of the brain for at least that long, I just never get to the step where I actually make use of them because I just go "oh fuck this".

On average, how long does it take to learn to "Draw"? I'm not talking about being the best of the best, I'm talking about advancing beyond a stage of pure stick doodles into being able to sketch things out and attaining the most basic of competency.

>>2907154
It's hard work and I've got a lot of other shit to deal with man, I don't want to get fucking papercuts.
>>
is there anyone here who graduated with an architecture degree and pursued a career in art? how are you doing? do you regret it?
>>
>>2907156
if you can't even enjoy the process of drawing for more than a minute a day there's no hope for you. draw stick figures if you have to, you have to somewhat enjoy what you're doing to make progress. maybe start with "fun with a pencil?"
>>
Will improving your handwriting, also improve your line work? My handwritting is kind of messy, and my lines are also a bit messy.
>>
>>2907274
The thing is, I know -what- I want to draw, and I know it'd be fun to do that, I just lack the part where I get the skill necessary to accomplish that to the point I can even sketch out an idea of what I want.

I notice a lot of artist, ranging from Peter Han to Glen VIlppu don't seem to measure a lot in their drawings

I understand the gesture is important, but isn't that a bad habit if you want to construct accurately?

I remember Dynamic sketching being a massive pain in the ass when drawing things like the Human face because the proportions can get all wonky unless you have experience drawing portraiture

Reorganize your days and nights. How many hours of sleep do you take? Unless you're already sleep deprived, you can usually get up an hour earlier and not suffer any ill effects.
How many hours a day do you work? If you improve your speed, you can get the same workload done in less time. Try setting unrealistic time goals and trying to achieve them anyway. It will force you to improve on your speed, and if you don't meet the goal, you were going to spend that time working anyway.
If your boss tells you to play a game, you can claim it as work time. Just do a study of a screenshot.
Hang in there, brother. Build skills and save money, and you can do personal projects in the future.

I think the reason why they are able to be so gestural is because they've really grinded perspective hardcore, so it's all interlized. If you notice, glen always draws a square or box with lines pointing to imaginary vanishing points for for his analysis, for someone who has grinded perspective so much, that's enough to have a good indication.
>>
I am thinking of doing Construction exercises FZD style for at least 2 months straight, to master it before moving on to other subjects such as environment design, working with tone/silhouettes and anatomy. Is this a retarded idea? I just want to master perspective until I can solve any issue I might encounter before moving into other subjects.

After reading this: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.ca/2010/02/color-wheel-part-4.html I have some questions.
1.Is there even something like an accurate color wheel (scientific depictions of wavelenghts are on scales) and if so, how would it be determined? By opposing colors yielding in a perfectly neutral grey?
2. How do color relationships work, if they're based on a skewed color wheel? Conditioning? Or because it isn't really an exact science to begin with?
3.What reasons are there to choose one wheel over the other, especially when painting digitally?
4.Other than for color mixing, is a color wheel even neccessary at all?
>>
>>2907957
You can do whatever you want, but keep in mind that if you only grind really boring studies there is a good chance you will lose interest partway through and give up or burn out. Personally I'm also of the school of thought that you should do a bit of everything and develop as evenly as you can, which works rather well since so many things in art are interconnected and complement each other well. There's been plenty of successful artists who have developed using both schools of thought though, so just do what feels right for you. Ultimately I think it comes down to how each individual learns things best.

Also you're allowed to change your mind or approach partway through if you want. You don't have to go "I'll do X for a year" and then actually do the full year of X when you realize 2 months in it's not a good approach.

I think I might be half autist or something, because the idea of moving from subject to subject instead of focusing and mastering one, then moving on, angers/annoys me.

I guess I'll just keep going and see what happens...thanks for replying
>>

I'm not an expert on this stuff, but I'm interested in light and was the one who previously linked you that page in the other thread, so take what I say here with that in mind.
>1.
Pretty sure the idea of a colour wheel is just a human invention based on how the brain interprets wavelengths, and things just happen to line up that way. There are even some colours we can see that aren't wavelengths (magenta for example, which is two wavelengths on top of each other). I'd say the digital colour wheel is close though to perfectly accurate.

>2.
What sorts of colour relationships? Basically colours closer on the wheel (spectrum) are similar, and they contrast with ones farther from them. It's pretty much science and our brains are configured for it (ie our ancestors easily see red berries in green leaves).

>3.
You can use any, so long as you are able to pick the colours you want off of it. A lot of digital painters don't use colour wheels at all and pick using sliders, swatches, or manually. If you're going off things like selecting exact colours from the wheel based on "triadic schemes" or whatever you might end up with slightly different results, but no good artists sets their palette like that.

>4.
It's mostly just a way to help understand the relationships of colours. You can also use it to graph things in colourspace if you want.

Hope that sort of answers your questions. Honestly I think you would be very interested in the following website which most people find a little overly in depth and scientific, but that seems up your alley and it's way better than anything I can explain:
http://www.huevaluechroma.com/
>>
>>2907973
Oops, forgot to mention for your first question, when I said that it's a human invention based on how our brain interprets the wavelengths, that's because visible light is only a tiny part of the much much larger electromagnetic spectrum, which includes stuff like infra red, ultra violet, x-rays etc. So the small section that we so happen to be able to see isn't special and doesn't wrap into a circle in a scientific sense.

>I think I might be half autist or something, because the idea of moving from subject to subject instead of focusing and mastering one, then moving on, angers/annoys me
I've met a handful of people like that. I'm the opposite, and jump around. It's worked out pretty well for me. Usually the end result of the two approaches turns into a generalist vs a specialist, since people like you are hesitant to move on to other areas until they have REALLY MASTERED whatever they began with.

Anyhow, good luck man and just do what feels right.

How do I do symmetry? I struggle with it really hard. I guess it's easy digitally because I can just do a mirror function, but I totally suck on paper. Any tricks or exercises you recommend?
>>
>>2907999
Draw a centerline and horizontal lines to make sure things are not skewed. You also can use an actual mirror in real life to check. It's not just a digital trick.

Thank you!
By color relationships I mean complementaries, triadic, etc.. Actually, I think it's called color harmonies.
Having both the RYB and CMY color wheel, means each color has two different complementaries, and also all the other harmonies/relationships differ. If these schemes are anything to go by, one of the wheels, likely the RYB one, should be less suited for chosing colors (because the relationships are inaccurate/skewed). But I guess there's not actually a need to be this exact. Or if it were, it'd have to be rooted in human perception. In fact, that might be the major difference in both color wheels. Could one say RYB is more based in human perception and CMY is more scientific? That would actually make RYB the better choice for painting though... Now I've either really come full circle or am just talking nonsense.
Alright, never mind the essay, thanks for your answer!

>no good artists sets their palette like that
not at all? who uses it then? and how do good artists chose their colors?

Some photoshop questions since I am trying to get in the habit of using it more.

1.) Is there a way to setup right click color grabbing on photoshop? or maybe a hotkey that I can assign to my right click that works like that without much difficulty and takes the same amount of time?

2.) Do I have to switch to eraser when I wanna draw with transparency or is there an option I am missing with the standard brushes? Maybe a way to lock it so my eraser and brush use the same tip without having to switch at least?

In CSP and such I really like to erase with the same brush I am using by just right clicking a transparent section of the picture or use quick color grabbing to mix my colors and would like to use a similar workflow but I am not finding anything for doing this.

also a 3.) that isn't too important but I got this Kyle brush/tool pack but since it's registered as a tool I can't seem to preview the strokes or tips, is there a way to do this or I guess maybe transfer it over to brush? Although I hear there is a reason they are saved as tools in the first place.

What are you asking? Like removing pixels from a layer? Or painting transparently? You can lower the flow or opacity of the brush to get it to paint thinner. If you want to use it like the eraser but as a brush then you can use a mask on a layer and paint with greys.

Yeah this is what I meant since on clip studio transparency is set as it's own color in a way.
So using a mask layer is the way to do it? doesn't seem as convenient but I will give it a go.

No, just art and music. Would be nice if he was here to explain how he manages to balance all of them out.

When are the times I should and should not use the airbrush tool? I understand that overusing will look terrible, but I don't really understand why, especially since It seems like it's the best tool for smooth transitions.

It seems like when it comes to value, I should use the airbrush (and erase for hard edges), and when it comes to color I should blend with harder brushes
