Just after effects. 2D painted image projected onto a sphere.

Kind of a Psuedo-3D effect.

You don't need friends, just go to Newgrounds and make a post saying that you need a voice for your cartoon. (I think they have a collab forum or something?) Just give a little bit of a description and you'll get a couple people asking you if they can be in your cartoon. I asked a while back and got like 6-7 people wanting to help me out. Feel kinda bad cause I never finished the thing but oh well. So yeah, try posting on Newgrounds and you'll be sure to find willing voice actors and you'll get to be a part of an awesome yet autistic community.

The light table feature lets you change pencil line opacity so you can draw on color layer with stroke:

Albeit you would use the highlight/tone nodes to do this kind of lighting instead, and it will self cut into the drawing that you need (il make an example in a sec

To be honest yeah the animation isn't Richard Williams-tier and I just don't care for the calarts style but I was of course being a bit hyperbolic. The actual animation itself is perfectly competent and utilitarian for youtube (which is anti-animation to begin with).
>>
>>2866440
Yea learning toonboom has been fucking ungodly, it felt so cumbersome after flash that I quit my first try into it.

However now that i'm proficient in it all the tools/settings make sense and it's lighting fast, something i can do in 2 weeks in tb would take 3 months or more in flash.

>>2866452
Everything also has curves. So say you have a bunch of highlights on each part of the character. If you say want to turn off the lighting, you don't need to do them all one by one. You can bind all the controllers to one curve and that will let you use it as a switch to turn on/off the highlgiths/tones. You can also draw new highlight/tones frame by frame, and move the tone/highlights inside of the piece with a peg without changing the tone drawing if you need.
>>
>>2866453
You make a camera and throw a peg on it, super simple. It also lets you change fov (can be real time change via curve as above with highlights), and you can make pseudo 3d stuff by moving it in foreground/background.

You move the camera on frames you want and keyframe the same way, then you can edit its path in 2d or 3d format.

Again too big of a webm to embed:

Anyone looking for an introduction to ToonBoom/Harmony shouldn't pass up this lecture by Adam Phillips (http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/408967). I think I posted it towards the end of the last thread but it's basically OP material tbqph. It really shows why ToonBoom is the industry standard for digital hand drawn animation and deserves to be.

Yeah, but we're casuals using industry-standard software. Flipaclip is a novelty that I could see being useful for learning how timing and flow work but not much for actually creating past that.
>>
Clip Stuid Paint has the best animation timeline of any traditional bitmap drawing software I'm aware of. While it's vastly inferior to ToonBoom it's also a very small fraction of the price-I would encourage anyone to give it a try.

It's a shame I can't give that honor to Krita with its "flash like" timeline and their absolutely fantastic frame selective onion skin but it's simply too unstable to count.

All the courses I see always waste your time with bouncing ball exercises when you should simply be learning to draw if you are truly beginner. So I say you really need is the Preston Blair animation book. I've found John K's ramblings and cartoon theories to be a useful supplement to it though.

http://johnkcurriculum.blogspot.com/

All it really comes down to is drawing good poses. If you can't do that, no amount of inbetweening will ever make your animation look good.

excuse my use of the word, but please redpill me on going to school for animation, /ic/.
2D or 3D, doesn't matter, I just need some input.

Is it even worth it?
I've read so much shit online about how you shouldn't go to school for art, but I'm being pressured to go to school by friends/family who don't understand the industry.
Frankly I don't understand the industry either, so that's why I'm asking.

From my limited understanding though, animation careers seem to be generally pretty low-income, which is why the idea of going to school and landing myself 10k in debt, that I may or may not be able to pay off within ten years seems fucking retarded.

If the US wasn't so fucking stupid with it's educational system, this wouldn't even have to be a decision.

>>
>>2867802
Depends on what you want to do but generally 3d animation makes more $ because it's not just animation studios that hire you but actual game developers.

If you have a degree from an art school it is easier to get a job relatively speaking since you'll have a portfolio to go with said degree.

However there are plenty of animators (like myself) who never went to art schools, and just did our work online, made portfolios, got known (youtube or vimeo is great) and applied with that and got accepted. Being an animator isn't like doing construction engineering or medical work where the work you do could hurt someone if you arent taught properly, so you can get hired based on skill alone with a good portfolio.

I'd like to do a thing in flash but can't find a tutorial for it. If anyone would have any hint, I'd be really grateful.

To simplify things, let's say the screen starts with a prompt "Which clip would you like to watch?" and a text input box below. If the user puts in "1" and confirms, a clip plays on the screen. If the user puts in "2", another clip plays. If anything else is put in, nothing happens.

Does anyone know where to start? It doesn't have to be flash. Any tool will be good if it gets the job done.

Pretty sure most animation software will let you import video as a layer for rotoscoping. Personally think PS's animation tools are tedious to use.

See a lot of studios using a little of both if it's hand-drawn. As you say, usually comes down to just wanting more aesthetic variety in bitmap.

you mean slow down at the top of its bounce? yeah, that time i tried copy/pasting the first frame to accomplish that, but it wasnt enough. this time i added some more frames with subtle movement here

thx 4 tough love
>>
>>2873384
hm still looks fast. i swear the whole thing is slower before exporting
>>
>>2873384
wat. stop trolling. you have to add consecutively more frames at the top, and less as it falls and bounces back up. Don't add the frames in evenly of there's no change in momentum.

its not nice to troll
>>
>>2873386
yeah still too fast add more inbetween frames and check your export settings if it really does look different.

sorry bouncing ball errors really trigger me for some reason

well thats what i meant, when i said "added frames" i was just referring to the top of its bounce. not the up/down movement. pls dont mistake me being a bad babby animator for master trolling

Are there any good guides on animating in CSP? I like the UI/brush use and set up, it's easy and feels like PS, except for animation. It feels kind of awkward adding/moving around layers, inserting frames etc.

Was wondering if there's any clear tutorials because their user manual is meh.
>>
>>2873407
I''d say exaggerate more. It's technically ok, but it doesn't appeal much.

Bigger bounce, more squash and stretch. Make it as exaggerated as possible, and then tone it down until it looks appealing to you.

it should benoted how hard it is to get into gobelins in the first place, it's almost like a grad school really, many if not most of the students have either already done an arts degree, have industry experience or in many cases simply had to apply repeatedly for 2 or 3 years after school while attending ateliers etc, it's not very common to get in right out of highschool, so the people going in are already the cream of the crop.

>Just want to learn animation
>Don't know if my drawing skills are sufficient enough to do so

This is where I'm at in a technical sense.

I just want to quit drawing and start animating, but I have no idea if I'm good enough to switch from that to something else.

Does animation teach artistic skills like perspective/foreshortening?

I feel very lost on how to achieve successful foreshortening aside from feeling everything out.

This is what I'm currently drawing like.

I have great difficulty achieving what I want to in my art because of my total lack of skill retaining design ideas once I get to actually drawing. Should I get over this hump, or should I go ahead and start animating/drawing?

I don't know how to attractively warp perspective for a viewer.

I have a strong feeling that I'm just not ready to totally drop drawing in perspective.

There are so many questions that I have to ask myself that I've yet to even think of. Until I can make a good, convincing pose from imagination, I believe it's silly to try and animate such a thing.

Welp, this was totally useless. At least I've realized it's dumb to walk away when I'm no master. I'm glad I double clicked my own art.

What do you guys think about "style" in terms of appeal vs actual writing/humor.

Would simple style of animation like peppa pig be enough if there's an interesting story/characters or is it too basic and would only appeal to 5 year olds?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC8lKN1d-c8
>>
>>2885338
You can tell a good story with even the most basic art and animation. However the stuff a lot of people wanna do is world building and visual storytelling, that is difficult to do without good art or animation. But if you're relying mostly on voice acting then you can probably get by if the actual content and performances are good. For example someone told a decent story here and they only used basic shapes to tell it. Or look at don hertzfeldt's (however you spell it) films. They are fairly simple in their animation but are very affective in conveying a mood and telling a story. If the focus isn't art you'll just have to think of a creative way to get around that an appeal to people in another way.

Form should glorify content. Seeing a war epic conveyed through fingerpainting or a kids fanfiction in hyperrealistic digital would contrast and ultimately cause humor. This is also why a lot of webcomics are so easy to cringe at--the maker is unaware that the form isn't properly conveying the message, and the viewer knows this.

>Disney animators all work on bottom pegs.

Makes me wonder, does Disney still do 2D animation at all nowadays?

As for your question, I once tried getting into animation but I got stopped because I just wasn't gud enough at drawing, I made my own light box and my own special pegbar out of a wooden strip and two dowels, that worked well with the cheap paper that I used, I used it on top most of the time for no particular reason.
I also used those special three-peg pegbars, because the school I went to had a special perforator for those, still worked the same for me.

I simply didn't work fast enough to really benefit from a bottom peg-bar orientation, so I guess it didn't matter, I would take a whole lot of time flipping through pages to determine whether the animated bits would flow well enough because I didn't have the experience to see right away whether a movement 'works'.

Don't bother too much with these kind of things, the important part is that you draw a lot.

>>

He said he uses hanapen I think. The dev doesn't really work on it anymore and I don't know if it's available for download either. It's also only for macs, no windows version unfortunately.

Dudes,
Any idea where I can get a fully "prepared" animation scene to test compositing?

What I mean is having all the keys/tweens labeled (or a time sheet for reference) and all the art already cleaned.

The theme doesn't matter, as long as it is well done, at around 12 FPS or above. A dynamic scene would be preferable, to really emphasize the transition between frames.

Being colored is a welcome bonus, but I will need the uncolored version too.

Congrats anon! Anymore info you could give us like how you got the job, what kind of studio it is, what kind of animation you do, etc? Also any work you can post here?
>>
>>2896917
Kudos to you man. Let's hope you'll avoid any burnout !
>>

Thanks, yeah I hope not too

>>2897078
I saw it advertised online and applied. Then I was given a week to do an animation test for them. It's hand drawn 2D

Hey guys, idk if this belongs in the QTDDTOT thread but I feel like this one is appropriate, if not pls excuse me.

Toonboom Harmony VS TV Paint 11,

Which is better? Why or why not would you prefer one from another?
>>
>>2897772
>ToonBoom
Better features such as:
- camera tools
-tweening tools
-compositing tools
-effects tools such as motion blur or glow
-somewhat easier to use UI
>some 3d features
>TV Paint
Mostly just better coloring and drawing tools.

If you're going for a mostly frame by frame traditional type of animation then Tv paint is probably better. If you wanna do more special effects stuff and tweening then toonboom would be better.
>>
>>2897777
The only problem with tv paint is you can't upscale because is raster
>>
Oi peeps
What are you all using for animation except photoshop?
>>
Are there any good animation forums or communities out there? I'm getting kinda tired of these threads since they're 99% bullshit and only a handful of people actually animate.
>>
>>2897964
r/animation has a discord server, its eh. And theres Newgrounds
>>
I just jumped to a tablet and want to do hand-drawn but am completely lost in terms of software. What's the best option for something basic, intuitive, cheap (or easy to pirate) for Mac?

I have photoshop but I can't get my head around how to use it for animation

i've been having trouble finding .tors for Tv Paint 11, i've searched for em' but i'm coming short.
>>

I'm having the same problem, i have a Mac aswell.

I have a bunch of TV Paint files i can't access since i use it at school. Can you convert TV Paint files into ToonBoom files?
>>
>>2903581
there isn't one, nobody's cracked it yet, when you buy it they send you like a USB stick that has to be plugged and shit, it's a little too niche for anyone to really bother working on exploiting it.

It's kinda like what Reason started doing with their software. It sucks but until some brave soul *or Cheng Liu* cracks TV Paint, Mac users won't be able to use it.

The usb security dongle is so annoying. I gave up and bought it so I have to use one, it hogs a whole usb port for no reason and I only have 2 on my mac so with the dongle + my tablet theres no free ports. I know I could use a extension thing but that adding even more crap to my setup.

tldr someone hurry up and crack it so I can stop using this damn dongle
