Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

Give me your honest opinion and tell me about any mistakes.
>>
>>2890437
More importantly, what was his endgame?
>>
>>2890442
it's not a pose that someone would naturally ever find themselves in. like stand in front of a mirror and try it out and see how uncomfortable it is, then try to find a better pose.
>>
>>2890442
Whoa, it's so much better. That right arm goes further back because of the shoulder, you remember this thing called the shoulder blade? I think he might be overextending his knee, but don't take that as fact. I don't think someone would go hardcore shielding like that that when they're also pulling back their blade.

That pose looks very awkward and uncomfortable. Some of those angles are downright impossible for the human body to achieve

Take a look at his right arm, shoulders do not work like that. People are not legomen
>>
>>2890444
Do you mean the right arm? I can make that pose and it's only the right arm that does feel uncomfortable doing so, it would be worse if not impossible holding a sword like that.

Does this actually work?

To spend many painstaking hours on one super precise and calculated drawing?

Rather than say draw this vehicle 50 times instead?
>>
>>2890465
Sure, if you want to be a drafter

Otherwise you're better off using basic perspective lines and letting your intuition guide the rest

Yes it will look shitty and incorrect at your first attempt but that's why you practice
>>
>>2890465
Do both. Your quick sketches will be way more informed because of the long constructions like this. And if you need to invent a vehicle or building and paint it to a finished illustration/concept then knowing how to do this is important.
>>
>>2890465
yes, it does work. However you can estimate these perspective lines and do not have to precisely draw them.

Giant feet, giant leg, skinny leg, giant eyes, scratchy lines, t-rex arms. You need some Loomis my friend.

Not bad effort though. Keep at it.

>Not bad effort
>>
>>2890465
>Does this actually work?
Of course. And to make it easier, you can just set up a perspective grid layer on top. It honestly doesn't look like it would take hours. Your braking the vehicle down to basic forms which is mostly just cubes. It shouldn't take too long.

Drawing the vehicle freehand 50 times would actually be much harder since your guesstimating everything and making lots of errors. If you do this exercise enough times, you'll get good at free-handing perspective.

The rate by which one can improve draftsmanship has been increased to a level the only thing stopping you from getting gud is yourself. This naturey stuff is called landscapes or sometimes environments as well. There's a few books on them, but don't worry about it too much yet. These two books last you a few months, two or so if you really don't want to do them. You're not limited by any means to just these books, so explore.

Figures is all over the place, generally you read all of those books too. Loomis, Vilppu, Hampton, etc.

1. This really isn't that difficult, FYI. Go through Scott's How To Draw... videos and he shows you how to do this. This design in particular may take half an hour longer than some basic plane, in the end it'll depend on what degree of detail you want.

2. If you're just interested in big-ideas concept art you can just thumbnail sketch such a vehicle and use your paint blocking to get the general picture. If you're interested in vehicle design then of course this level of detail is especially necessary.

3. Like everyone else has said, it's good practice anyway. You'll be able to abbreviate a lot of this as you get more experience.

Keep practicing. Drawing with your wrist is more acceptable on a tablet since the ways you can grab the stylus are limited and since you can zoom in and out etc.

But when you draw long lines you must do them from your shoulder in order for them to be straight, and for middle long lines I personally do a kind of mix between wrist and shoulder.

original intention was to make this so that I'm looking up at the cabin but an Anon informed me that I'd need to use 3 pt perspective for that. What purpose do you need fulfilled by use of a bike? Is it for consumer use? Military? Desert? Snow? Things like these you need to think through in terms of design. For a basic bitch motorcycle just look at how one is constructed in real life by using references and such.

I wanna make it, damn it.
>>
>>2890967
If you want to draw like FZD students, that's easy. What's not easy is drawing like yourself. There's a secret to making it that no one really says, but if you worry too much about how many hours you put in. Definitely not going to make it. Tell me what do you want to do with your life.
>>
>>2890957
I throw most of my practice away because it isn't worth saving (I'm talking about connecting lines, curves, ellipses, cubes in pespective kind of shit). I do like 10 pages of those simple things every day.
Think I need to move onto Robertson and try more complex forms, all of what I did in the last few days was trying to put cubes and build shit with them as "study"

>>
>>2890978
I don't think you can "push through" a RSI since that. However, they probably just took frequent breaks to stretch and some painkillers.

Those who are unlucky enough to actually get hurt badly drop out. So yes, it is a bit of survivor bias but they are also the ones lucky enough to also withstand the pain for a year. Improvement like that doesn't happen without them pushing themselves all the time. No sane person would partake onto themselves that kind of stress neither. Just goes to show how much they really wanted to make it. If anything, I'm jealous of their will more so than their skills. It's definitely the most abnormal part about those kind of people. You can learn the stuff they do given time, but to push yourself to get it all done within a year all while being under constant stress and having to constantly think about how to design something that looks good within a time limit. Completely insane.
>>
>>2890984
We're practically FZD but free, come on anon. We have all the resources to give you that they do, you just have to put in the work.
>>
>>2890994

No way friend, no way. I hardly see anyone bothering with construction or ''hardcore'' perspective. I haven't seen anyone talk about the basics of sketching as a tool to learn and build a visual library rather than to copy what's infront of you. It seems /ic/ or at least /beg/ is more on the illustrator/fine art type of deal rather than the pure design and fundamental grinding they do over at FZD. I am trying to reverse engineer the syllabus over at FZD but it is still a work in progress.

Any suggestions welcome but it seems to me it goes a bit like >Basics of Perspective >VisCom/Sketching/construction a la Peter Han >Hardcore perspective like Scott Robertsn >Intro to Design >Digital Painting >Entertainment design

Am I missing something?
>>
>>2891001
No one here wants to put in the work. Simple as that. If a beginner was serious enough to put in three months of time, that would be seriously impressive. Hardly any stay that long.

You're missing the whole 2nd and 3rd terms. Not that it matters much, if you really wanted to do what FZD did you would be creating a ton of grids and then going back to ink over them. That's what they basically do in Perspective and VisCom. Design Sketching is get a culture and draw a bunch of stuff from them. Forms and Materials is literally any digital painting class but in combination with all the other classes. All of their classes overlap because it's all meant to bring them together.
>>
>>2891005

Makes sense, Anon. That's what I am going to be doing for the next couple month. Tedious perspective grid grinding with complex forms and sketching every freaking thing I can think off using the skills taught in Peter Han Dynamic sketching.

Thanks
>>
>>2891010
I'm not really sure why you keep mentioning Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching which is vastly different from what FZD does, but if it floats you boat, go for it.

If you have a look at the student work, you'll see that their sketch books follow the ideas taught by that seminar I keep mentioning. You can see it in the way the textures have a focal point, going from dark to light, small to big to guide your eyes and you can also see they started the drawing by focusing on the big forms. This is the VisCom Peter Han teaches, it's exactly the same thing they do.

omg anon lol, you dont have to be all mathematical and all, if your good at eye/brain coordination and generally know when things "look wrong" you dont need all those bloody lines, but justr a few lol, forexample your first 2 pictures on the left already have some weird proportions for some items, if you didnt solely rely on the lines but also a bit on your brain and eye to discern when things look wrong, they would have looked much better

They are the sternomastoids. You can draw them in if you want, but it might be a mistake to draw them that pronounced. They are usually very subtle and only really visible on some people or when the head is turned a lot. They're also more visible down at the insertion near the pit of the neck.

Keep doing it

Look, think about it like this: These are your first heads, noses, eyes, lips. In art it's pretty much a given that you will straight up fail the first couple hundred times when you try something new and difficult like a head.

Try not to stress too much if your features don't look like the ones drawn by whoever you're learning from, the features they draw are their ten thousandth, their hundred thousandth yours are like your fiftieth.

So long as you keep doing deliberate efforts to study noses from various angles, you attempt new ways to construct them, you draw them from photos and life, they will start looking good, you just have to push through these failures and not be discouraged.

First: I'd say, hypothetically, what you've created could exist. The eyes could be painted on and the form is realistically 3d enough, and the flaring jaw gives it the impression of a heavy, clay mask.

First: practice rotating the lips not around the jaw, but around a bevel.Your Loomis cranial mass if fine, probably even better than mine, so it should be no problem for you to construct a bevel. Wrap the mouth around the middle line of your bevel, and the lips will appear to protrude. Make the bevel larger for fat lips, use smaller bevels for fetal alchohol syndrome

Practice lips and you'll get there eventually. Also eyes, but I really don't know how to explain them

First stop doing these straight lines. Heads aren't that boxy. Do nice curvy lines from your shoulder, and your line quality will improve.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMC0Cx3Uk84

You also seem to lack understanding of how heads actually look like

here some videos that helped me:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7cDY7YDsg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThgQioElGkM&t=2955s

You should also practice your cubes, cylinders and organic forms every day to furthen your understanding and feeling for perspective and form.

good luck man

See pic related, 2min in mspaint.
If you want it to look like the reference you gotta change the chest/shoulders/arm on your own drawing, which is more work. Redraw it from scratch, also dont spend too much drawing shadows till you got the proportions right
>>

No I get that, it's definitely much easier than random guesswork, but I feel like I've read people say that the colors won't come out right. or something.

I could just be imagining things, figured I'd get some opinions from other anons
>>
>>2891275
It's fine to pick colours off something to save time or whatever like if you are a concept artist in a studio knocking out as many concepts in a short period of time as you can, but it's generally considered a bad habit to have since it doesn't teach you anything. Rather than understanding WHY a colour is the way it is, or why a value is that value, you just copy it exactly and move on. It means that when it comes time to inventing your own colours/values or modifying a reference to better suit your needs, you won't have the background knowledge on how to pull it off or make it look appealing.

Especially if you are doing a study then don't colour pick as it defeats the entire purpose of what you are trying to learn.
>>
>>2891284
it means you have to "eyeball the colors" vs "pick the color and apply it from reference"
Since the former way will make it more accurate as your "actively" focusing on the colours

>>
>>2891264
Of course I have. But the approach to bargue plates is completely different.

When doing bargue plates you literally just copy the image at the same size as you see it. That means you measure lines and literally copy them onto your page and go more and more into detail with these lines.

If you want to do that here a nice series of vieos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlLvnmvqL2s

When constructing like you are trying to do you don't wanna just copy 2d shapes, you wanna really understand the form and be able to see through the forms and then ultimately put them down on paper.
>>
>>2891284
Colors can come out wrong if you don't know how relations work and such, yes. The color picker can also not be accurate and make a color that it assumes from that area. These things can trip you up, but it's easily corrected with time.

I've been doing it for about 8 months, I could be going a lot faster though but I'm trying. I like how cleanly it's laid out and he explains everything to where I actually know why I'm doing each step too, my lines have improved drastically and I can do a near perfect circle with one round now where I used to have terrible chicken scratch. (try look at some of the lines in the cardinals)
It was good program for getting me up to speed for my age though

If I put my mind to it and do a lot of drawing, I can wear one of those pens down in a day. It's a shame because they're lovely pens to use when they're new, but they're stupidly expensive.

I use the Staedtler and Artline ones, though I've got a couple of the Sakura Pigma pens, too. They're harder to source in my country though.

I don't know about brush pens, but I've always wanted to try a fountain pen, just to see.

The main light is coming from the top front right. There is another strong light coming from back left that's creating the rim light but isn't really affecting the face much.

Your outline is very scratchy/thick and is masking your proportions so it's hard to tell what's off. You can go over it again with a cleaner sketch, otherwise you're gonna be making corrections while rendering.

The right eye is drooping down and the left is angling up. The nose is curving left. Remember that the nose and eyes should be aligned and symmetrical. The shadows will make the features of the face look like they're curving to the left.

Flip both images to check proportions.

Here's a slightly polished sketch. Does anyone have a reference to the pose the girl with the swords is in? Or can you tell me how is it called? I tried searching for "standing on head", but Google gives out just that, literally. I couldn't find an image of it, so I had to make assumptions based on what my senses told me while doing it on the sofa. And do the left girl's shapes look okay for a toned woman with some fat in just the right places (I think I'll have to straigthen out her spine, though)?

Is it possible to set up some sort of challenge we can all do together? Or some sort of group exercise? I'm working through Bridgman atm, maybe we could all try working through that? (just a suggestion) These threads would probably be better if all the posts were more focused instead of people posting random doodles.
>>
>>2891664
it's been done before and it never works out

the only other option i could see is a discord but then again discord servers die in two or so weeks (especially a /beg/ discord)

everyone would do better to join the las or /ic/ server and bne more active there
>>
>>2891664
Working together is literally the worst idea in existence. Never has worked. Now doing your own thing and getting advice, that works because at least we don't have to compare and contrast and feel bad about out shitty beginner work.

But yeah, if you want to do a challenge, just say so, not like the thread goes anywhere. Just put it in here.
>>
>>2891664
Good idea
I think it would require a new thread (not the general) because this is a thread specifically for random beginner doodles and exercises. We need a "LAS" community challenge for beginners.
>>
>>2891670

So you recognized me, huh...
When I work on the picture all the way to the finish, I usually texture hair last (before adding some final lighting), and up to that I just keep a sketch to give me visual cues. The final result should look like this pic, or even better.

If nothing else bothers you, I take it that my anatomy understanding has improved, hasn't it?

>>
>>2891701
I'm pretty slow, honestly. On paper I could do a complete (much more crappy, but finished) lineart with some values in an hour, but with the tablet I place lines and undo them a lot even now, when I got kinda used to it. Still, painting became much faster, as I don't have to redo shapes after the lineart is completed. Tigerl girl's portrait (>>2890854) took me about five hours in total, although I stopped now and then to check imageboards and cook lunch, and I didn't bother to count the time spent on each activity. Even then, it still took at least three hours of work. The version in this thread isn't actually the final version. After uploading it, I noticed and fixed some things I forgot, but did not want to reupload the complete version and aggravate the people in this thread further.

>>2891710
No, I'm too bold for that. I can feel embarrassment later, when I look at my picture and realize how bad it were, but I would be embarrassed only before myself. There's no point in drawing if you can't be proud of any picture you drew with serious effort. ahh I actually find it a lot easier to do digitally because I can set up guides very easily. Though I do miss my ruler. My idea was that the house has some kind of stone, and the front porch area is just a bunch of planks sunken into the ground a bit, though I should of done better to indicate that. I don't really have any tips, as I just started out myself. Currently on step 9(pg 79) of Perspective Made Easy, and I downloaded Erik Olson's videos so I intend to go through that as well. Thank you for the kind comment
