This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

The whole point of 4chan is to bare the gritty cold hard truth of, in this case, drawings, that you wouldn't get on another platform because in most cases you would be shunned, or banned etc.. because of a lack of anonymity. If you think this>>2806543 is something to be proud of, I feel like I have to re-examine my standards of this entire board. Tbh I see pretty good drawings that get no response or get shit on, while every now and then there are drawings like these that get praised. It is a fking joke that people like these are critiquing, and probably shit talking other artists that are WAY better. No wonder people like Pops left, because of you fking autistic retards.

Depends are you going for theme wise. Overly cute or just a little girl. If it's overly cute push the anime style more. If just a little girl I would make the body more realistic to the age you're gunning for.

For example a bigger belly, plump arms, age appropriate clothes(unless you're going for some Victorian look as it seems)

Maybe a more serious face.

Now, as much as I agree with your statement that many, many other artists, better than the ones posting in the very thread, gets overlooked over pandered, shit art and all... Get over it, Jesus fucking Christ. People will like whatever they fucking like, shit art or otherwise. We're all human, not robots. Not every person will be in a hivemind with others, someone will have "better taste" to like an artist with more "technical" skill over others that are low level. While other people won't. It is what it is, and has been so since Da Vinci, and even earlier.

Getting so anal over other peoples interests and taste is fucking autistic. Please don't spurg out like that again, that was embarrassing even for 4chan standards.

ok so

im new to having a tablet
im hoping someone more apt than i can do a paintover or something
im looking more for crits on technique not so much the anatomy + face + boob size

Zero construction and symbol drawing. Everything is round and formless in your drawing. If everything is round, nothing is in a sense. You need to balance curved lines with straight lines. Basic shape language stuff.
Also you are chicken scratching and show very little confidence with your lines. Understandable, but something you need to work on.

Your lack of accuracy is actually what stops you from making it look "pretty" so please try not to use the muh style excuse. You simply don't understand how to simplify and stylize shapes because your eyes are not developed yet. I would suggest looking into bargue plates (for understanding how to break down complex shapes mainly, the block in stage chiefly) and to study the sketches of animators like Glen Keane. Remember straights vs curves
>>
>>2806950

noice thanks ~!
luckily im not too new but i totally get what youre saying about the straights and curves

i might do bargue plates on my tablet
and try drawing the face upside down so i dont force muh style on it

Ohhh sorry I mistook you for some completely different person. Just take that re-drawing I did with a grain of salt, as I probably implied too much of my own style in it. To answer your question, I don't really know. I just go with gut feeling, in most cases there is a slight inward curved line representing the temple area followed by a downward sloping line representing the jaw bone line. Just keep doing whats true to you, and I'm sure you'll eventually find something that sticks with your inherent style.

Thanks for the reply man, and yeah I've been doing drawings based on photo poses and on my friends and I've noticed that doing that is a lot easier than studying the forms again. I've noticed that I can do gesture, perspective, and anatomy well it's just that I need to work on further details like how much the cheek goes out and natural poses. I've started to study from photos and real life and I'm having a lot more progress. I thought that I was a more technical minded person as I like programming but I find that I learn more just by observing real life and photos than any sort of art tutorial or artbook. I think those books are mostly are for fundamentals and the rest you gotta figure out on your own

Try "ghosting" in your lines. You hover your stylus or pencil above the screen and practice the stroke a couple times before your actual stroke. When you do your stroke aim your eyes on where you want to go, not the actual pencil itself and try to move your hand to that point in 1 smooth quick motion

My two cents is stop drawing anime and do figure drawing for a couple of months and then come back to anime (if you still feel like it). honestly the examples of what you want to achieve you posted are sad, that's a pretty low level of artistic understanding, you can do better probably

Starting from zero?

Being able to CONSISTENTLY draw with that level of APPEAL, without relying on one-trick-pony-gimmicks will take you:

Less than a year with great practice.
1 year with good practice.
2 years with questionable work ethic.

These are super rough estimates and natural tendencies play a role as well.

>stop drawing anime
Stop giving this advice for crying out loud. There is absolutely nothing stopping an artist from drawing anime and doing figure drawing.

"Abandon everything and start figure drawing" is the worst /ic/ advice that people parrot all the time.

Instead, have a goal, keep pursuing that goal, while you ALSO do studies and figure drawing etc.

Find a couple artists to study. Not artists that you like, but artists that you want to be able to draw like.(yes there's a difference.) Make sure they're good (ask someone who knows better than you). Pay special attention to their (rough) sketches, they're the most valuable work to observe and study when starting off. COPY and reference these drawings. I know your artistic integrity says otherwise but it's really helpful (just don't present the work as your own). Just keep in mind the goal is not to replicate, but to feel out the process.

If you draw everyday just from anime pictures you will get to around this level, it sounds long but you need to know much more than you would expect, just simply copying anime and manga won't help you to draw good looking pictures, sure you get some elements right like the eyes and the hair but it ends up looking wonky or off to you.
That is why you should do all the same shit other beginners here do, because if you don't know perspective and proportions you will end up drawing shitty ass deviantart quality pictures.
Let's say you've been drawing for a year or two just learning from pictures of anime and manga, you will most likely hate majority of your work because they look wonky or somehow off, that is because you didn't do the fundamentals, perspective, proportions etc..
So if you want to draw waifus start with realism.

>copy other drawings and not real life

this is why you will stay bad and mad, dont teach art kids that its okay to just draw a simulacra of life, thats retarded. dont copy a specific artist's copy of life, just copy life and be your own artist, its better in the long run

on the other hand if you dont really care about art and just want to doodle your waifu then i dont care, do whatever. but if you want to "make it" then you cant get there by studying anime alone

>pic related, its what happens when a copy of a copy of a copy of a style gets copied

Construct the girl's body using basic forms until you get a manikin, start with a cuboid that includes the whole body. Construct the Striker Unit and weapons using basic forms, start with cuboids. Draw detailed head, draw the face. Draw detailed body and clothing. Add details to the machinery.

If you can't, go read books until you understand how to do it, then try again.

Probably cause your nose isn't there. You basically messed up your rendering. It shouldn't have that large of an area of darkness between the eye and the temple of the nose or whatever it's called.

It isn't just the shading either, the facial structure doesn't fit the facial features and the neck is too thick and is positioned incorrectly, study the skull a few times. Shit, study anatomy as a whole if you wish to draw good figures and heads.

pal, it's nice to finish up a piece, but even if you take every piece of advice people give you it will still look bad, simply because the base of it it's bad. next time you should try to take advices by doing a red line over it, and ask critique of such revision, polishing something that is badly built won't help you on anything

The largest problems that stick out for me is the hand's proportion. The boob's position, they look wonky. The torso to head scale, she looks like a bobble head or an adults head on a child's body. The headbands angle. The face looks like it's been scaled down like Woll Smoth here. And the colours are really muddy.

Fumikane draws humans quite simplistic and his faces look off sometimes, but you can get basic stuff right from studying his works. You should try to construct heads/faces and get proportions right, not just copy his wonky noses and mouths.

I'd also recommend some mecha artists, but everyone wants to draw cute girls only.

Does anyone here scan in their artwork and then ink and render it digitally? I have a cintiq and I still find that my traditional sketches are much more proportionally accurate than my digital ones, and ironically enough they take way less time too
>>
>>2808111
I did for a bit but then the inking part made me realize it was like the same thing as drawing it anyways, so I just skipped the scanning part.
>>
>>2808113
I can sketch very smoothly on smooth or rough paper but when I have to make a smooth circle on a glass screen I have to undo 1-3 times. I think I'm just way too used to traditional texture and friction, haha.
>>
>>2808113
Also what zoom do you usually sketch at? I usually go around 50 percent
>>
>>2808115
Right? It was like that for me at first too, so I had to just get used to it. Truth is you don't get used to it, haha. Just can do it better than you did before.

>>2808117
Depends on the canvas size, but I usually hover around 33% to 50%.
>>
>>2808122
How long did it take you? I've had this cintiq for about 3 months but I've had a cheap Huion tablet for about 1 year. I absolutely hated it so that's why I decided to upgrade. It was a lot better but I still find that I fail seeing proportions on it. It's strange because I don't have that problem on paper
>>
>>2808089

I seriously need to get faster and better but mostly faster, there are some results that obvious bias aside seem decent but getting there still takes me too long

I want to do more and better music, that sketch is part of a Vocaloid song I'm making rn.

I want to make art a career someday (not because of the money but because I want t dedicate myself mroe to it) so I hope this year I can start a Patreon (even if it's just a glorified tip jar), start accepting commissions (the only ones I've done is because people have asked me) do more fan art, more shilling in general

I want to do more traditional stuff, oils mostly

Buy the SP5 or a Wacom Mobile Studio if the former dissapoints, the iPad pro almost totally ruined the SP2 drawing experience for me but I still need Photoshop

and some others...

>>copy other drawings and not real life
The advice about copying drawings was a separate advice, unrelated to life drawing which I also mentioned in my post in these parts.

> There is absolutely nothing stopping an artist from drawing anime and doing figure drawing.
>while you ALSO do studies and figure drawing etc.

Reading comprehension.

Draw from life to learn how life works, how lighting and form works. Draw from life to learn observing and proportions. etc.

Draw from other drawings to learn appeal and design. To learn gesture and flow. To learn cartooning. To learn the tricks that other artists use. etc.

No matter how much you study other artists, you will eventually land at your own sense of aesthetic. People are not copy machines. Trying to "maintain" your artistic integrity by not copying other artists is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when you're learning, there's so much knowledge to be found in other peoples work.

> just copy life and be your own artist
I'd agree with you if we weren't in an anime/cartooning thread right now, talking about a guy who wants to draw with a specific aesthetic in mind.
>pic related, it's what happens when you only do life drawing and then try to move to stylization and imagination drawing

Try to rework the pose and facial expression if you decide to redraw this concept , right now it looks like she is holding a hovering helmet and cleaning it with a weird grip on the towel with a blank look on her face.

Try acting out the pose in real life as cliche as it sounds.

Good start on the lighting as it has a clear lighting direction.

For rendering try to carve out a stronger and distinctive soft/hard shadows especially on the cloth , right now its slightly muddy.
If you do it right it can really bring out the form of the cloth and anatomy even if you only use 1 darker tone for it.

Cancelled my clipstudio subscription, sold my tablet, and threw away all my manga.

Such a waste of time. And for what? It's completely unnecessary and serves no purpose.
Stylized Art is not needed, especially in today's society where the Classical, Traditional, and Realism reigns supreme.

To be honest, the "anime style" seems almost like a childish endeavour at this point, and I don't mean any disrespect, but it seems like the most serious otaku(asides from guys who are legit mangaka/animata/cg artists but they represent a very low % of dedicated lifters) are also the people with nothing else going on in their lives.
I know this was true with me, I was biggest and most serious about weebdom when I was still in middleschool, watching anime 15 hours a day, and pretty much just plucking around all the time, going out, with no real life.
To all you weebs out there who are getting sucked into the Alternative/Stylized art , try to stop yourself.
So long as you have and maintain decent realism, you'll be fine.
Anime Art just not worth it.

cheers

So with the advent of photography tell me the purpose of realism. Maybe not anime per se, but the whole purpose of art is to create a new perspective separate from objective reality. Stylization, whether it be impressionism or cartooning, is where the value in art lies.

I've noticed after lurking around /ic/ for awhile that a lot of comics and manga don't actually have the level of flawless art that /ic/ claims that you need to "make it". Only very few artists are that skilled and sometimes they even
fake anatomy or perspective to save time. I remember an old saying in the comic book industry being : "When in doubt, black it out."
I think studying the fundamentals is fine but I think having fun with making things look cool to yourself is important too.

Yeah I think a lot of people who do stylized artwork usually try to make their art better so that they can be ready to handle any scenario in their stories with their art. However, I've come to realize as long as its not distracting and you can easily communicate what something is without telling the reader directly, then it really just comes down to how good your story is and how willing you are to tell it.

I didn't see a great crit on this so I'll try to give it a shot:

If you're worried about sexualization, don't because I don't see anything wrong. She's cute but I think you can do even better. What you need to work on (phone pic aside) is your motor skills and proportions.

Sketching style - It looks like you sketch with many little hairy lines on top of each other. This is a bad way to sketch. The quality of your drawings and your overall workflow will improve if you try to just let go and sketch with steady, longer lines. If your hand is shaky, do an exercise of connecting dots with your tablet. Improving your art comes with improving your motor skills.

Proportions - Ask yourself: What are you going for? Something exaggerated, or something a little more rounded out and realistic? I see a bit of both going on, particularly with such a big head, yet thick neck, but little stick arms. I say push more one way or the other. You're going to have to fix something to make it look right.

It also looks like you're drawing and finishing the head before you finish the entire drawing. That might be part of the problem. Try to work on drawing the whole body first so every part of her looks like it belongs. Just my opinion, but the style of the head looks like it should be much smaller.

I'd do a redline but I gotta head out in 5.

Interesante, me gusta mas el tercero de derecha a izquierda. But there's something about her arms that seems off. Her face is by far the best looking style (to me).

Work on your perspective. None of the elements in the drawing work with one another. The background suggest a certain perspective, but the characters say otherwise, its one mess of a perspective.

I have a strong grasp on what the basic events and arc structure of the story and I have defined people in my mind that I really want to make into characters. Basically the main premise of the whole manga will be that the number one mechanic in the entire land (known as the Mechanist) goes on an adventure with a robot that fell from the sky to find a village that was abducted of spaceships so that he can see his family again.

I don't know if it's just the pose or not, but don't be afraid to draw hands. Having them out and not be perfect is still so much better/easier than trying to hide them.

Couldn't leave the feet looking like >>2810479 . I can't hide the fact that I'm not sure how to draw shoes pointing towards the viewer and that I was too lazy to look it up, but I added a few details on the boots that I felt gave a greater suggestion of form than just a misshapen blob otherwise would. I wonder if the ankles are a bit much though. I'll call this one done in six months or so after I learn how to draw hands.
