Your composition is boring AF. Your characters of interest and the giant meaningless rock in the back are framing in a big empty space at the center of the page. Made worse by the fact that the meaningless rock is roughly the same exact height as the charactors which tells me that the two ideas are of equal significance. Make your subjects bigger or make the rock smaller or break the rock into several rocks or remove entirely etc. etc.

You might also want to have another look at your colors and values. Straight up black is a terrible choice

Looks like a limp puppet. Foreshortening on the knife hand is awful. Would suggest break down arm into simpler shapes first to see how they would work. Arm with hand in pocket is incorrect point elbow outwards. It's how it works naturally. The chest and shoulder placement feels off as well but I can't say. Please keep practicing and do your best!

The thing is to stop drawing symbols, not to draw them.
Observational drawing will focus on your mindful act of seeing and looking at what's in frnt of you. Drawing specifically what's there, not what you think is there, to evaluate distances, to look at angles and values of shades.

There's no sense in arguing between digital OR paper, just draw a lot. Usually people can draw wherever and when they want by using pen and paper, but it's up to you.

Except there is, specially as a beginner. If you're starting with digital, you will deal with much more digital-only issues, than using traditional media (What DPI is best? My drivers are not working. Which resolution is best? Which brushpack is best? What is opacity vs flow? I have too much jitter. Do I need a cintiq? Do I need a better PC?... I can Go on and on).

You start with pen and paper until you are 100% confident in your lines. Then you move to digital and review the ctrlpaint.com library.

I'm still having trouble with colors though. I can't seem to figure out where to darken the correct places. It took me 3 hours just to make this one image. I wasted most of my time deciding which area should have some shadows.

I'm not great at colors myself but I would suggest learning values, aka drawing in black and white to learn about how light and shading goes. That should help you with that. However, if I was you, I would not worry about that and focus on form first. But that's just me.

Thanks. I'll give your suggestion a try later by going to /beg/ to repeatedly draw one of their examples till I get it right.

But I still plan to learn multiple things at once slowly since I'm aware how much time it takes to actually get good.

By the way, is it fine for me to make scratchy lines for now since I'm a beginner? I'm actually trying to avoid it since I've read that it's actually a bad habit. It's making lines and circles very difficult for me though, just like pic related, on the right.

The way you're rendering makes me absolutely think of Shadman. I reccomend you look at links in the OP and search for anime speedpaints on Nicovideo (forget about youtube or at least browse past the autistic gumball fanart and get titles in Japanese).

Use references, even if you're drawing from the imagination.

I'm loving the pose and fit appearance.
Face could be more curvy and fixed because it seems too round but you have the form down. The leg to the right might need to be fixed perspective wise and shifted to a other view.

overall I love and it's a good start

Face is great and I'm loving the pastel colors you used.
The arm could use a little more bulk or meat because it looks to thin and the body needs some proportion.
Practice on the wrinkles and more importantly line weight.
I don't know much about blades or (rapiers?) but I can see the attempt to add a pop up effect to the bottom part. I recommend making thin white streaks in a circular motion rather than the bold ones shown.

I like it and if i were to see it on a social site, I would surely give it a like.

I like the swirl of her hair and the dress, it mixes in really nice. I would say though the twist in the feet/lower limbs is weird however since you've abandoned it on her torso (she's facing direct, lower half twisted to the right).

I would also maybe bump up the brightness on her, atleast her upper half/face by just a margin. My eyes go from her dress, travel up (her) left side of hair, and to her face. I don't know if that's the intent with the lighting but it's like one big curve to me, which is nice, but I don't know if that's the intent. I'm not super great at composition so sorry if that's not very useful. That being said you seem to be getting way better at composition. Don't you work professionally?

Well your proportions are really off and it ruins the drawing. Learn to draw proper female faces and then stylize it into whatever style you're going for. Also I get the feeling you traced from one of those emo girl pics, but I have nothing to prove it & I don't really care.
To be specific, the defects in your drawing are as follows: Long nose, weird cheek tumor, eyes, eyebrows too close to eyes, no shade below chin.

Those are head wings, not horns. It's a japanese demon thing. I'm not completely sure but I think it originally comes from their folklore and found in wood cuts so it's not just in animu. They tend to come out from the middle of the head above the ear in mosts designs rather than where you would typically place horns.

You should break down the hand into simpler shapes that way you can understand how they should look without reference. And about the pose and pocket arm, I get what you were saying, as well as what you were trying to do, but that is simply incorrect anatomy. Humans literally cannot perform the pose you made comfortably or naturally. Now, admittedly I am not the best at three point perspective, nor entirely at Loomis levels on anatomy, but here is a redline of what I believe is a more comfortable natural pose. It is rather sloppy and if I you want me to be more clear on what I mean or you simply disagree, please let me know. I just would like you to do your best is all.

Good news is, you've got some pretty decent colors going on there!
Hard to say what to critique cause I'm not sure whether you want a line heavy style or not, but I'd personally remove the fuck out of those.

Focus on the form when you're painting as well, that'll push some more life into it. You've completely flattened that shoulder! Watchu doing man!
There's only a line differentiating the medallion and the bouquet, the bouquet should really wrap around towards his chest otherwise you're just creating this huge flat spot smack bang in the middle of your painting.

You know what's sexy? Having an actually fucking belly, not a cleft through the middle of your abs. Having a tail that attaches just at the top of the ass, preferably not one at all.
You've gotta work on your anatomy man, I don't want to grill you and ruin your motivation, but I've gotta list some stuff to fix before you start working with color, so bear with me.
-The anatomy of the entire body.
-Tits are hanging off a non-existent rib-cage.
-Collar bones are completely flat as well, due to non-existent rib-cage.
-Hips and legs are totally lacking in construction.
-You've cheated your way out of doing the hands properly, we both know it. Don't fight it, just learn how to do them.

I recommend going through and drilling one thing at a time. Getting a rough idea of how the muscles look beneath the skin, then doing a bunch of drawings of that body part using reference to better understand how it looks.

idk to be honest, it's just the more I look at it the less I like it and it doesn't match the image I had in mind when I started this but that's always been the case with pretty much anything I do that isn't a study.

I think you've got poor shape language, and that's reflected in your cartooning. The ear isn't a simple oval/circle; the head is a misshapen sphere; the hair doesn't really follow any sort of geometric shape; the line quality is pretty awful, and the drapery is incredibly ugly. You've placed lines willy-nilly on the shirt and the cape, and it's fucking terrible. I see you have no understanding as to how cloth works.

It looks like you need to continue to draw from life before you decide to draw more cartoons. Your fundamentals are either shoddy, or they're not there.

It doesn't really feel like there's much depth in this either. The colors aren't good, and the texturing on the wood is very bad.

I can't tell if you've decided against using form, or if you simply can't do form in the first place.

you're thinking i want the figure posing the way you're drawing him, everything stiff, torso facing the front, arm relaxed.
That's not what I'm going for, the torso is twisting towards the camera and leaning back slightly. This placement goes with the arm which is tense (notice how the pocket is buldgin) and completely straightened out.
What I will say is accurate is that the hand looks weird.
