This has probably been asked before, but why is this called an "Alternative" art thread and not an

4chan was originally conceived as a forum to discuss anime and japanese culture, so wouldn't that make it the mainstream style by default? wouldn't western art technically be the alternative?

Pretty good work man - what you're mostly lacking is fluidity within your linework, i.e., most of your lines are very "static" and "stiff" and don't quite flow into each other. This can lead to stiff forms, which will lead to the image looking far more flat.
However, your top right sketch displays some definite dynamic-ness, especially around the middle torso area, so obviously, you are working well towards fixing this problem.
Generally, I would improve on that by just trying to do gesture studies at least once a day. Reference some of Krenz Kushart's gesture studies and tutorials to improve on this - Kuzhart is a master at combining solid forms and gesture and is fortunately one of the few who enjoys releasing his studies to the public.

And of course, there's the usual anatomy weirdness that's super common with a lot of people - for you, the most outstanding issues seem to be the shoulders and the bottom half of the legs, they come off as flat and awkward.

You're doing well anon - keep at it!

You need an understanding of color temperature, don't just darken the color for shadows but change the hue as well.

I haven't done pixel art in a long time but from what I understand you make the outline more dynamic in color as to not clash in contrast with the lighter/darker colors of what's inside the outline.

This one weirds me out. It was clearly a lot of work and the perspective is surprisingly competent considering how bad it looks. The figures, while stiff at least aren't grossly out of proportion, and despite the awful rendering you can at least see there was an attempt made here.

But the faces... they are absolutely awful, how could someone mess up so bad. It's like the features were separately pasted in from a clipart program and no expression is even attempted. I don't understand. Is the person who drew this afflicted by some sort of face blindness?

First, honestly I wouldn't even bother with rendering yet, practice the fuck out of gesture and faces first. You want your characters to feel alive before worrying about rendering. This is by far the most important thing.

I can't help you with the rendering really, I'm bad at it myself, but I can tell you that those harsh gradients aren't working. Look at reference to see what light actually does and study texture. But I wouldn't worry about that until after you worked on the gesture/face issues.

Make sure your stylization is proper and isn't just symbols drawn onto a surface. For example, the eyes don't have a lot of depth here compared to the rest of the face

The questions thread kind of vanished, so is it okay if I ask something here? I just wanted to know if there was a way to replicate the pencil brush from Clip Studio in SAI. Clip Studio's a lot more fun to draw in, but the layout confuses me, and I'm a poorfag on top of that. I've seen people replicating their SAI brushes in Clip Studio, but is there a way to do the opposite?

years ago an artist friend/mentor taught me about shapes and silhouettes and it changed my entire focus from line to shapes. lines are just tools/materials you use to construct the shape.

also sometimes the confidence of a mistake is more appealing than the uncertainty of a correction, tho when, where and how you feel this should or shouldn't be applied is highly subjective and dependent upon style, whatever that may mean to you

also want to make it clear that i still very much consider myself intermediate as well and any and all of this should probably be taken with a few grains of salt

i would avoid horizontal mirroring, it tends to produce an overtly eerie/sterile feel, even if you're doing a refsheet, but that's just me

also, unless you're going to be 3d modeling these characters you can get away with much more natural stances than the A pose

if you are 3d modeling i take back what i said about the mirroring, it will save you a lotta time and stress, tho i highly suggest not using it all the way through, mostly just for construction, then flipping the canvas for detailing

one last thing, i'd personally tighten up the shape of the girls right (our left) boob so that it more closely resembles the other more naturally shaped one.

The only thing I didn´t touch it´s the face. Personally I wouldn´t have choose that position of the sword. You end fighting for the position of the hand in vain.
Add some curves to the hair look more vivid now (if that the correct word).

Why not bud? There are at least a few l*teral pros here that give out blogs which have their email, real name and even phone number attached to them. I understand wanting to avoid the eccentrics but they're generally harmless and networking is important. I have to deal with a lot of weirdos on a daily basis at work and I don't have the privilege of being able to simply "block" them with the click of a button like you hypothetically could.

This might be a board for artists, but make no mistake, a lot of people that like to commission artists lurk here as well so come on, everybody's waiting on you!

Thanks for the advice, I'll just try harder to maintain symmetry; I do intend to do a few more poses of these at some point. Drawing characters with weight and doing lifelike things is pretty hard for me at the moment.

Thanks... I think it has something to do with my traditional background. I used to do acrylics and draw in pencils a lot. I find that doing line drawing with a real pen helps when you transition digitally.

On getting better... Everyone has their own way of learning and there is no one-mold-fits-all. However, i think the best way to improve is to observe from real life. People who worship and grind anatomy masters like Loomis or Hampton often forget that those are just supplements to help with your live drawing observations. Live drawing is the key. If you have an atelier nearby you can check it out. Or people-watch with your sketchbooks. Real gestures involve real people, not posemaniacs dummies in awkward poses.

what helps me is just draw something down even if it's shitty but more focus on getting the overall look and gesture down and just fix it from there. if you're unsure, a quick peek at your own hand doing the same gesture is great for a quick draw rather than getting it correctly in the first shot.
