Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

>>
>>2739142
No that's just your problem, you do NOT need to be rendering yet. Your values and proportions are off and everything is too soft and mushy. You need to do it in this order:

Sketch (big shapes and gesture only)

Rough clean line-art (simple but less messy, more accurate, use visual measuring. for example here you would have fixed proportion and all that cranium you cut off, the shape of the jaw, eye socket shape, cheekbones...)

Block-in (block in values, this shit looks kind of like a paint by numbers. No rendering yet)

Block in refinement (go in and fix up any gradient tones lying under the details you're looking at. Blend your soft shadows, and define the hard shadows)

Render/polish (now that the structure, tones, and form are all planned out all you have to do is smooth out and mess with the smaller details and variants in tones, like any inside the eyes or nasal cavity, the little dimples and textures, etc.)

It looks like you put down a sketch and went straight to block in refinement. Don't skip anything or you'll be polishing a turd.

Start over entirely, do it again with this process.

Strictly speaking, abandon manga style and copy from real references to improve your rendering technique and anatomy: your hair are terrible and the drawing is overall ugly because of bad rendering of volumes. Even the eye, which is the best thing in this drawing, has wrong perspective.

1.

Work on your construction. Your face has no skeletal structure, and you still arent thinking in three dimensions.

2.

Learn your proportions, the head is way too large, the torso is too short, and the arms and legs are too short AND too skinny.

3.

When you learn your anatomy, you'll quickly realize that legs do not work like this.

Keep practicing, I can tell you'll make it one day, kid.

Do not use line. Only fat brush.
Make an other study of a picture at the begining of this thread. Then, post one image with the three following steps :
step 1 sketch of basic shapes
step 2 add value (no blending)
step 3 refine value/edge (pic related)
We will tell you when you start to destroy your drawing. Enjoy

I'm halfway through Fun with a Pencil and I've noticed that my progress is really inconsistent. Often I start doing exercises and the results are way better or way worse than the previous attemps. I always try to understand what the exercise is trying to teach me, but sometimes it's like I've forgotten everything learnt so far.
I didn't have this problem with Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.
Is this normal, or am I approaching the book the wrong way? I've actually started writting down everything I notice wrong with my drawings so I can hammer in the knowledge, but you guys may know what is going on and have a better solution.
>>
>>2739572
I could also use some tips on how to scan drawings properly.
>>
>>2739572
you fell for the meme
don't even bother with even fun with a pencil, you need to practice basic shapes and line quality. Draw simple objects from life or a while.

What you're essentially doing here is studying calculus when you don't even comprehend basic addition and subtraction. You're mindlessly copying down a formula but you don't understand it.

Studying consistently from real objects (nail clippers, an eraser, pencil sharpener, your fingers, wooden cubes, etc.) will improve you faster than anything else when starting out. In doing such, you will be training your brain to see. It doesn't happen overnight- but it will happen if you work at it diligently. Then picking up Loomis later will be a cakewalk.

I can clearly see some effort has been put into this. I'm willing to bet that if you apply yourself more efficiently you can make it.
>>
>>2739559
That face is not in 3D, that face is a a flat plane, a photograph, and your brain and your eyes know it.

You want to see and understand 3D better? study things that are actually within the third dimension.

Are you drawing with your shoulder?
I'm a /beg/inner too and I'm still struggling with this, but I can already see the difference.
By keeping my wrist steady and moving only my shoulder and arm I can (barely) get some longer and steadier lines.

Shit, I do remember the books talking about that.

Drawing something from a reference is fundamentally different from just drawing from your mind. You want to build up your "natural" sketching and drawing ability- uninhibited by having something in front of you, so that you can make more precise and confident strokes when you study.

As a warm up exercise- literally just practice drawing lines of various lengths. Draw them straight, curved, angled. Practice drawing over the same line multiple times with the intention of not making it messy.

Over time your muscle memory will build up to the point where your lines will go where you intend them. 10-15 minutes a day of this before your studies should suffice. Use pen and printer paper if you have to.
>>
>>2738869
Looks too scratchy, you aren't looking at lines properly. Take your time to notice lines and shapes.

Also, do you have source on the reference image please?
>>
>>2739599
arent you supposed to only draw with your shoulder when you do very long lines? like you cant do precision with your shoulder
>>
>>2739623
Think of it like increasing and decreasing the diameter of your "brush", you need to get good at drawing from your shoulder for your bigger strokes, wrist for tiny details, and arm for most stuff.

After 2 months of Erik Olson and a Scott Roberston DVD, I tried to do a irregular shape thing in perspective, drawn digitally and freehand.

Whato do think, /ic/? I know I'm still a begginer in the perspective field but seeing some progress feels good.
>>
>>2739804
Are those blue fins meant to by symmetrical? They don't look like they are mirrored correctly.

The cast shadow looks wrong too, you put the ship shadow directly under it like the sun is overhead, but the shadow of the ramp looks like the sun is behind the viewer. That or the shadow is on a weird hill, but it still is not correct.

Avoid hatching your shadows like that as it flattens the perspective. If you are going to hatch with loose lines then makes sure they follow the ground plane and go to the left vanishing point and help emphasize the perspective instead of contradict it.

I tried revising some of the problems with the drawing.

You are right, the blue fins are not symetrical, and I don't think I got them right this time either, I'll have to rewatch the part where Scott explains that again.

However, let's say the light source in the drawing is above, just to clear some things up, I think I confused the fact that the ground blueprint of the the shape is not supposed to be the shadow of it, I mean if the shadow were to be above the shape then the shadow would become bigger when projected in the ground, right?

One more thing, the shadow in the ramp would be correct, no? Supposing the ramp is facing directly into the Left vp, then it would cast somewhat like it does in the pic, if that's not the case then it's probably the same problem that I had with the shape, which is that the shadow projected isn't supposed to be the ramp moved to the ground plane.

Thanks for the reply, anon.

Well I'm a bit confused as to what you are trying to show. Is the ground plane meant to be flat? Right now it looks like the ground itself is another ramp, I drew a cast shadow showing how it reads to me. If you want it to be flat then you messed up how you placed the vanishing points as this would be outside the normal cone of vision and things would be distorted and not look like how you drew them. I did a quick edit on how I would roughly fix the scene but it's just me guessing eyeballing and isn't very accurate either probably, but is closer to how it should look probably.

It seems that my lack of skills have bested me yet once again. I suppose my estimation of the Vps was too exagerated, that made the ground plane too distorted or simply the the object look too close to the SP.

I'm going to have to practice how to set them up properly, because even if the eyeballing you did isn't completively correct, it does look better than my guess. Erik Olson did say that learning how to place the Vps is something you get from practice so I guess that's the problem.

Thanks for the edit, it can be hard to get perspective feedback in /ic/.

drawing from your abstracted memory instead of what you see or what conforms to the mathematical rules of reality. It's about a failing to execute your own intentions.

The typical comparison is a symbol eye vs an eye that follows form. Another example would be when you are studying a face and when you finish it, the head is tilted in a completely different direction. It's so off that everyone can instantly point out that it's wrong- but you may have no idea why it's so off.

The reason it happened is that despite having a reference, you still drew what your brain told you it knew instead of what was in front of you.

Amateurs often confuse stylized drawings for symbol drawing. As long as what you draw has a believable structure and adheres to the fundamental concepts of light and shadow, then it's clear you have the knowledge and are not creating a symbol.

tldr; if it looks competent and believable it's less likely to be symbol drawing. Some mistakes are more noticeable than others.

Pic related is from someone who doesn't post here anymore but does a better job of explaining than me, I just woke up. Hope it helps.

Yes and no. Most good manga artists are trained traditionally and this knowledge of reality carries over into their stylized work. If you're just studying from people's cartoons, and you're not trained enough to be able to tell if they've made mistakes or not, you're going to run into big problems. You'll end up one of those people who can only regurgitate things they've copied from other pictures, you won't understand how to do anything yourself.

There's more fundamental knowledge you just can't get from copying cartoons either. Doing studies from reality, applying and studying the fundamental concepts, is the only way to really get good at this.

If you study from reality and get good, there's very little you'll need to pick up in terms of stylization to draw anime. If you can draw a good looking human figure, you can draw a good looking anime figure, there really isn't that big of a leap.

Just don't try to learn by only copying anime, and you won't end up like one of those bad 'How to Draw Manga' artists.

Be careful, a lot of artists stunt their growth with airbrushes because it gives a false sense of finish on things and makes you complacent or fooled into thinking that the superficial gradients are showing the true forms. I would be very conscious of the planes and how the forms turn even if you are using an airbrush.

>>

Thanks anon. Any tips on blending? I don't know how to get a smooth gradient and I'm scared of just making everything look super muddy.
>>
>>2740498

The appearance of three dimensions has more to do with value changes around the form. Construction is a good tool to help you think and plan three dimensionally, but ultimately how you handle light and dark, along with your edges, is what's going to make that thing look 3D.

Get Gurney's book Colour and Light, and take a look at the section on form. Read the whole thing actually, it's a goldmine.
>>
>>2740507
hm, okay. I thought I just got what construction was, but actually it is all about laying a good foundation for the rendering afterwards? this is the third time I think I understand what construction is... I'm learning.

I thought the tree was badly constructed because it is mainly oriented in two dimensions (no branches front and back etc...) and the branches have poorly defined direction, form and the way they attach to the trunk is also very unclear.

thanks for the book tip, I've got it in my folder actually

Sure, vary the settings for opacity/flow. Block your color with higher percentage and blend with lower. Otherwise you could use the smudge tool. Concerning the muddy aspect see the image absolutely correlated. Begin with slightly higher saturation and save your colors (swatches) in case of mudiness.
>>
>>2740561
That doesn't explain the culture surrounding the art craft specifically.

Like, there's an over-abundance of good artists from asian countries, so much that any two-bit piece of shit Korean or Chinese MMO can have god tier art.

Even the mediocre artists from asian lands curbstomp whatever modern western artist is being masturbated over westside. It's staggering.

And if you look at popular asian art from a few hundred years before now and compare it to European art, the balance is completely different with asians drawing mostly enhanced Cave drawings and europeans peaking drawing and painting as an artform.

What happened?

use a thicker brush and draw big. don't bog down on details too much. try and be aware of your lines. The slight transparency doesn't look good unless it's used for a line that's being tapered off, for example on the pink one, the bottom of the curve of the breast, that whole line could be a completely solid line, with just the end of it tapered off with 1) transparency 2) a thinner line weight.

this will give your lines some nice weight 8)

this is very good as a WIP but too early to help you on your blending, because you didn't really blend yet.

also the noisy base doesn't help you, as that detail is in the edges of the highlights and painting with them on with an untextured brush is the opposite of that

also it'd be helpful to know if you deliberately deviated from your reference (be honest here) cause the two don't have much in common

Can someome critique this. Is the armor practical or is the whole thing trash? I have a lot of stuff like this not sure if it's worth completing.
>>

you know you have a choice in brush size, LOL

I think you mean opacity. He clearly has size by pressure on (albeit not used too well)
>>
>>2740872
You should look at references for armor and see how they operate on a human, and if you want, try to design your own while still retaining functionality. What I'm looking at on my screen right now is what seems to be metal plates rung around a figure like doughnuts around a pole. There is no thought behind what you drew.

I see no stupid questions thread so can I ask this here?

Do I understand correctly that to learn how to draw from imagination you need to first be able to draw basic geometric shapes from any angle?

Now I think I understand the basics of perspective. But I don't get one thing.

How exactly do you know where to set the vanishing points? It depends on the FOV right? But still how do you know where exactly to put them? Do you just guess?

im getting a bit frustrated with this. the figure seems good so far? im having trouble attaching the head and getting the construction and proportions on the head and face right. it seems like theres not enough face but if her head is turned down there should be more hair showing. i tried to go for a more extreme down turned angle but im not good enough. help

The principal vanishing view point is on the horizon right between your eyes.
>>
>>2740957
Simply dont draw from imagination yet. Draw from life/reference photos

>>2740949

okay i bothered measuring and saw that both the arms and legs were a bit to long to i redid those and played around with the lower leg thats showing. since her upper leg is disproportionate massive. if this cant be fixed with minor tweaks im going to scrap it
>>
>>2740970
Literally everything m8. Not trying to bring you down there is definitely potential there but if you dont see whats wrong with the anatomy and proportions there is no sense drawing from imagination.

Heres a list if youre interested: arm proportions are fucked. Entire body looks like a tube of putty that is folded twice. No anatomy knowledge whatsoever, most glaringly boobs pelvis and ribcage. Shaky edges and blending. Weird uniform color.

If you draw from a reference photo you can get feedback and immediately see if the proportions of your painting match up with the reference.

Your painting shows that you will be able to grasp the fundamentals with a few more weeks of practice
>>

all fair and true. i just dont want to polish a turd if the figure itsself is horrendous

is the updated one passable? and are you saying the 'issue' i asked about my op about the head/face construction issue are actually okay? thanks for the feedback
>>
>>2740981
Not fixed. Draw something else with just the line. It's unecessary to begin rendering on a false drawing. With just the construction you will se your flaws more easily.

i had my arms at a similar length to that ref but changed it after i measured and saw that the elbow would come quite a bit past the navel. your model seems like her isnt loomis. googleing "woman hands behind head" shows proportions similar to the one in my revised pic and pic related

>>2740986

>>
>>2740992
You cant break a turd
>>
>>2740959
>>2740961
I understand but where exactly do you place the vanishing points with 3 point perspective?
>>
>>2740997

The world you draw still has a horizon. It just might be out of the picture frame. You can use some fixed points on your desk to the upper right and upper left of your fixated paper if you want to be precise
>>
>>2740996
true but you could have a pretty ideal turd, shoot it with it pee, break it apart, and shoot it again and break it even more. then youd be left with a flakey broken up mess with multiple masses floating around in your bowl with countless flakes and spec swirling in a brown misty orbit around the new smaller poop planets when you could have a one solid cohesive log that definitely shows you have a balanced diet and eat your fiber. but yeah, at least itll be easier to flush right? which is what youve been trying to tell me to do with mine all along right?
>>
>>2740997
In >>2740959 the main vanishing point is the orthocenter (a) of the triangle. Concerning F1, F2 and F3 it depend on the FOV you want, the furthest from (a) the bigger is your FOV.
>>
>>2740999
The thing is you cant expect to shit a perfect turd until 10 years down the line. You need to be able to get in there with your hands and go play doh on that log. You cant be afraid of breaking it in two and instead end up doing stuff like putting that bit of corn 2mm farther left. Thats not how art works. Especially since you can always ctrl s and ensure that your masterpiece of shit is safe if you actually do fuck it up completely

What's the point of sketching/painting uniquely from values ? Can I get away with just training my values-skills by starting with line sketches and only then start rendering ?

Fix that neck. There's a lumb on the left side that you can get rid of, and it looks like it should generally recede back over to the middle or jaw/ear meet anyway. The jaw also seems tilted; it's heading upwards while the face is tilted downwards.

There is light coming from every fucking where here and it seems like there are almost no shadows, I don't know what the fuck to do.
>>
>>2741274
Paint what you see. In the case where there is lots of ambient light then the important things are the local colours and the shapes of each object. There is still some lighting information, like there is some subtle ambient occlusion in areas such as where the stem was on the apple, and there's some specular reflections like on the waxy skin of it. The controller is a plastic material that is a bit harder to fully understand since it's mostly specular, but just paint what you see for now.

newbie here, but this looks like a severe lack of construction to me
>>
>>2741104

There seem to be two kinds of people when it comes to that... The first kind see things primarily in terms of value and masses, and others in terms of line and shape. Obviously you want to practice both ways of seeing but from what I've seen over the years it seems pretty evident that people tend to have a natural inclination to one or the other. Also, sketching with values from the start is a bit meme tier. Even the most painterly traditional guys start with a solid line drawing.
>>
>>2741349
First, stop calling yourself trash.
Self pity won't get you any closer to a decent drawing.

>>
>>2741380
This is not a bad attempt. You're closer to drawing properlythan symbol drawing, but you still have some slight symbol drawing issues in it. The eyes for example are very flat in the way you outlined them, and the eyebrows looks like symbol drawing still. Try observing more closely what the shapes in your reference are.
>>
>>2741381
should've mentioned that i eyeballed the distances from the reference, is there any major proportion negligence other than the ear?
>>
>>2741383
The proportions seem okay. It's more an issue of how you are drawing the features and things. The hair for example is just scribbles and no actually what it looked like. The neck seems a bit odd too,

I just look up the refernce and tried to put it into boxes, like it would do something when i would work with imagination.
And if i would put now muscles and all on top of it and then would do Lineart..everything would look flat.
>>
>>2741447
Well that particular pose is pretty flat as there's no real twist or foreshortening happening except maybe a bit with one arm. When you do the linework just focus on maintaining those same forms, and make sure you are overlapping the lines too and not just outlining it.
