Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You've done something very strange with the runner's posture. Look at the reference, he is running straight ahead, leaning forward with his torso twisting due to the arm swings. Somehow you interpreted and drew this as him leaning to the left.

Draw what you actually see.

You're high on symbol drawing.
Look for Loomis books on the artbook thread or Proko over youtube.
That should help you understand how to build and draw a head from zero.

It's a nice beggining, you seem to know the global anatomy. My guess is you rush your work. When you put a stroke there is no need to iterate it five times, the result is an awkward outlining. Instead use the next stroke to correct or add shape. Same rush mistake with the shadows, draw them and/or do a proper blending. Make some variations in the values of your lines. Draw bigger.
Ow, and don't rush your work.
>>
>>2742116

I used to always draw long noses too. Just remember that the point the bottom of the nose attaches is about where the cheek bones end, or you can remember that the nos is halfway between the brow and the bottom of the chin. When you draw from profile remember that the bone part attaches to the face just above the pupils, and the peak of the bone it just below the pupils, you can tap your own nose to hear the difference and learn where the bone ends.

Try using charcoal and only really fire in the darks when you are sure you have the proportions right.

Don't feel bad about not getting portraits perfect, it takes hundreds if not thousands of involved focused ones to really get a handle on it.
>>
>>2742046
Practice drawing a line through the center of the long bones and draw some of the long bones if a standing figure. You need to investigate how the femur attaches to the pelvis. Also try some different ways to create the general shape of a rib cage.
>>
>>2742339
Decent drawing. You could do the background as well or hint at it. I don't think hatching is the best for the hair though. You would probably need to use a darker pencil and actual marks that imitate the hairs flow.

Try looking at a Facebook artists called Paul lung. That fucker is a master of involved hair drawing.

This one is actually pretty loose for his usual controlled style, but it doesn't show too much.
>>
>>2742432
The basic idea is to simplify objects into basic forms. An arm could be broken down into a cylinder for the forearm and a cylinder for the upper arm. Since it's easy to draw cylinders you can use this to position and arm and make sure it has the correct volume. often you will also "draw through" objects, almost like a wireframe so that you get the far side correct and understand the volume in all 3 dimensions and not just a flat view.

For a technical approach that is used mostly for things like vehicles see Scott Robertson.

For an approach of using it on the figure and anatomy in a more practical way see Michael Hampton.

For an approach that is watered down and more intuitive and applies it to various objects see Peter Han.
>>
>>2742339
You need to be more careful with the light, you're making some bits too light, like the area just above the brow is a bit too light as well the forehead.

The facial feature forms are pretty good but it don't seem to fit quite right on the face, for example the nose perspective is slightly too forward facing.

Most of it should be fairly obvious from just looking at the skull. You can also grab a mirror and feel in your own face where parts of the skull are underneath your skin.

I already understand the basics of perspecive and atleast have some idea of how to do irregular shapes, however the first chapter asks me to redesign a scooter and even though i tried I still don't think I'm quite there yet.

Does it get easier or should I go back to something more basic?

>>2742516
Mark the top and bottom of the face as proportional limits, just 2 flat lines. Judge whether the hear is facing you or is angled. A face looking straight on is usually broken into 3rds. From the top down the first third usually ends around the top of the eyebrows, the second, around the bottom of the nose. But it depends on the angle. At minimum mark the top and bottom and the third markers lightly right on your reference, or on a transparency taped over your reference.

Introduce a few horizontal guidelines too, maybe a halfway point and quarters. See what's happening on the reference at these points, is it really the eyebrow there, the eye? When you replicate the guidelines on your drawing the same relationships and proportions should be at these marker points.

I plan to fully commit to busting my ass to improving. Using Prokos figure drawing series.

Gesture

Structure/Mannequin
Landmarks/Proportion
Balance
Exaggeration
Measuring
Tone

How much practice should I put into one thing before moving onto the next/how will I know when to proceed?

>How much practice should I put into one thing before moving onto the next/how will I know when to proceed?

You will never be "done" with one of those. Generally I would say, move on when you feel confident enough, and do what you are worst at next.

Also I dont think your list is all that great. Maybe something like so?

Gesture (Bean, RoboBean, Exaggeration, Balance, lineweight)
Value
Anatomy (Landmarks, Muscles)
2d approach (comparative measuring or sight-size)
3d approach (construction, mannequin)

Proko alone might not be enough.
>>
Should I practise all those gestures (I think that it may be useful), figures, and so on if I'm mostly interested in landscapes? What are some good exercises for it, or good books about it?

Sorry I'm not very good with this stuff. Is this ok?
>>
>>2743065

Yeah I know, I was originally offput by proko because his humor is...eugh. And whenever I tried putting into play stuff his videos were teaching. I was failing, miserably.

For instance, I was trying the Loomis method from the front, which requires you to chop the sides off of a perfect circle.

Well...any time I do that, one or both sides are always lopsided, same with my jaw lines. Curved lines are my downfall, if I try to make them look symmetrical.

Also, thats not MY list, thats the course structure of Prokos Figure Drawing Fundamentals series.
>>
>>2743069
If you are at that level, just do some contour drawings to get decent hand dexterity. Copying lines is fine to start and then slowly proceed.
And honestly, as long as you are doing exercises and are self reflexive you will get there!

Get Dynamic bible from artbook thread, there's a very specific chapter on this topic.
Basically you either build it outside in (chop away from a box) or inside out (draw the centerline, strap various 3D forms onto it).

If you find it too difficult, try Drawabox and a bit of Scott Robertson for grids and mirroring.
Simplifying complex objects into 3D forms is one of my favourite exercises, much recommended.

Do you mean heads or faces,
Loomis uses the major method of ball and plain, then adding simple block shapes to it which you then draw the features "within" or "ontop of. Thats pretty much what every imaginative drawing book will teach you in regards to basic head construction.
There are other methods and artists but they are almost always variations on this techique of having a ball and a plane. The. Cutting into or adding on to it.

Graphite is limited with it's contrast ratio compared to charcoal, from what i can see your paper has some tooth/grain to it so get building up the darker areas by going over the same area in multiple directions. Eg horizontal, vertical and diagonal shade in a box and you'll quickly see how this can darken your values

Is her left hand on her hip? The structure of the arm makes it look like that yet we don't see the hand. Even if we did, in that orientation her palm would have to be upside down resting on her pelvis bone which is not a natural pose if you're going for this sassy commanding look.

composition in terms of how the eye is drawn from the woman to man and vice versa is fine. also, im not an expert but the perspective of the wall seems off. it looks like there should be a corner where the lamp is but isnt being shown? and the window 'in between' the woman and man looks a bit big, like it interrupts the flow between the two characters. i dont understand whats going on in the background where you have the man drawn. honestly you should take this to the draw thread and ask them. none of us knows wtf we're talking about

ill just make a suggestion, now that i know thats the corner. those three vertical pics, im assuming they things like degree, certs, etc? if so, that would be weird to put them in the corner. so i think you should switch the place of those pics and window. then both windows are in the corner (makes sense and good for symmetry. and then the three smaller pics serve as something to keep the space between the man and woman interesting yet not overly competing for focus from the main characters. thats just my thoughts though. i suppose a smaller window could work but i think switching them makes more sense

ive been doing a lot of these. none of these have been from reference unless i need to check specific shapes like the mouth or eyes form a certain view. but as in references for specifics im just messing around and doing what i think looks decent. this is just a wip so i plan on incorporating your suggestions on the others and pushing more details in the eyebrows/lashes etc. ill look up how the draw the philtrum properly. but ill assume my construction is done properly?

It doesn't matter, it will only help you if you go through it
>>
>>2744802
You're never too experienced to go back and work on fundamentals. It's the fundamentals in the end that separate beginners from adepts.

It's been like an year since I've stopped consistently drawing, and more than that since I stopped halfway through a Loomis book.
I wasn't always this shitty. Should I go back to the basics?
>>
>>2744871
Did you ever do keys to drawing? If not, do it, it's really great.

Have you ever done an anatomical study before? What you drew is what you think the human body looks like, not what it actually looks like. It might be time to hit up Drawabox as well since it's really flat.

Day 1 of trying to draw bodies, and it's clear that I have a long way to go.

Any links to resources that can help me draw torsos and pelvises would be really helpful

Decided today to learnt to draw, so this is my first try on anything but stopped cos I have no idea what I'm doing.
1. It doesn't look like the picture, just some generic person
2. Where do I learn to shade stuff good - I've just done a shitty line drawing, none of that value business malarkey :(
3. I'll read through that wonderful sticky desu I just hoped by posting something I might hold myself accountable to continuing cos I had fun.

It all depends on how you finish the lighting. Youve included a lot of lines and subjects that are going off the picture plane, so it depends if you try to counteract thats.

The girls well drawn, though her back leg looks a little high up to connect to her hips correctly.
>>
>>2743881
if you're going for something realistic, yeah, half the image ends up being grey with white only at the brightest points.

your lineart had issues from the getgo, you started shading before you defined her fingers.

this has a lot of basic anatomical problems. her neck and joints are all messed up, she basically doesn't have wrists or elbows. that is what i would work on first, then learn to draw cloth with hang.

What all did you do in that year to get from there to here?
