Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

I don't want to compare at all, but god damn it, anon. I'm so jealous of how well done you understand form and I don't. Also are you rendering with graphite? So confused what's going on in this image, since it looks like digital and traditional. The beetle in particular looks nice.

Oh, I didn't realize it was that difficult for beginners to see. I guess that's why it's called symbol drawing. Well, lets just say if it doesn't look exactly like the image, it's wrong. That's what I'm getting at.

when you want to render full value studies in graphite, although it's really useful to get one very hard pencil for construction and a soft pencil for dark values, having one "light" one "medium" and one "dark" is well enough for your purposes in all likelihood.
>>2680191
Eyes symbol drawn, you need to draw the thickness of eyelids, his head is not a square, ear is not that shape, lines are garbage, hair line is not bumpy it's flat, beard not in right place, neck too long, ball of nose doesn't need that much of a line, there should be no flat line between the brow and cheek curve, cheek bone indicated despite him having puffed cheeks, shirt symbol drawn, missing stache.

The construction lines aren't even used, you drew them and then ignored them.
Your construction is vertical for some reason, ignoring it and making the head a square for some reason, ect.

You're in the limbo between symbol drawing and not being shit where you look at the ref, think "oh there is a line sort of right there" and just draw something to sort of match it without thinking.

And you're also a moron with a skin too thin to ever make it, so fuck off.

That anon is 100% right that you are symbol drawing and not using the construction lines properly. I don't know why I'm bothering to be nice to you when you're acting like a complete dick, but whatever, I did a basic construction lay-in and a quick sketch on top.
>>
>>2680211
>first week

You should start with something not as complex as a head to refine your understanding of form and simple shapes, THEN transition into portraiture or figure drawing. Unless of course you want your heads to come out fucked for months on end with no apparent fix or improvement, then by all means go for it.

No. Aside from your lines and construction being better due to skill, there's no difference. Don't get me wrong, my drawing is shit, but there isn't any symbol drawing. I'm guessing you either don't know what symbol drawing is or you can't see my sketch properly. You added value which makes the comparison even more drastic. Learn the difference between symbol drawing and shitty lines.

Looks pretty nice actually. The "C" shaped line that is on your cheek and between your eye and ear is a bit weird looking to me. I would either get rid of it entirely or modify its shape and make it more subtle. Your far cheek too might be bulging a bit far out based on where the eye and nose are placed.

Are you going to try painting it?

I'm not entirely sure what I was trying to do with it, but it's kinda dark and poorly lit so I was battling with trying to see the contour of my face in the mirror. With the lines on the cheeks, I was trying to imply form for some reason, but these are all just excuses. I need to study and learn more. Thank you :)
As for painting it, I need to look up some tutorials for painting in Krita since I tried to paint a little and didn't know what I was doing, not to mention I need to learn about painting in general.

What should my balance be of raw practice, to reading/studying? My only experience with anything like this is Dota, and most people will tell you reading guides/watching pros is fine but you should just jump into it and start spamming games every day if you wanna learn the game. Does the same apply with drawing, or is the emphasis on learning the fundamentals more important than raw practice?
>>
>>2680364
Raw practice is always more important than theory. Studying one thing pretty much lasts you a week at least if you're serious about it, if you're not then well, you can still extend the time.
>>

>>
>>2680364
IMO, in the very beginning (first week) it's good to read a lot about drawing and what the fundamentals are and how you can better. You must know bad practices etc. If you got a clear understanding of what is wrong and right, you just have to apply that and do a lot of raw practice. Once you're past symbol drawing and actually start showing some progress it's time to start studying again. But this is my opinion ofc.

>>2680373
Yep. The general consensus is that when you're just starting Dota, its better to get into the game and just start playing, a LOT. You have to start memorizing hero abilities, items, the map, etc. That's the biggest barrier to entry for the game and controls your understanding of how you want to approach each game. Once you get past an average level at the game, its time to start watching replays and stuff to learn the finer stuff.

I'm friends with a bunch of semi-pro players, and some pro players, and they all say that you just wanna spam the find match button to learn the game.

I'm not good at painting, to take the crit with a bit of salt, but it looks like you went into small brushes for details way to early. You should spend longer time on getting the pose closer to 1:1, light correct etc.
>>
>>2680987
That's probably true, also, the more I look at it, the more I think I should work on values more and go back to shades of gray for a while. I don't think I can handle colours good enough

I'd first set the plane on which the wall is resting, to know where to cast the shadow.
Then it should just be a point to point line tracing from the source to the plane, to set the shadow limits.
>>
>>2681053
but is the basic theory right? besides where the ground is? like am i supposed to do something with the top corners of the wall or do they just follow straight lines from the base as is expected?
>>
>>2681057
Welp, just place a lamp on your desk and light some stuff, it's pretty much straight lines. and the original shape is kept in the shadow, just enlongated and expanded based on where it is cast and how far from the source.

Your lines are very unsure. It's not full-on chicken-scratching, but it looks pretty messy. Try thinking before you move your pencil, and focus on drawing smooth lines in one go.
A lot of the of the construction is wonky; I can't tell if the line through the torso on the two top right sketches are abs or the ribcage, since they're too far down to be abs and they're not V-shaped enough to be the ribcage. On some of your drawings it also looks like you drew the upper body as a thin rectangular prism (second to left and second to right on the top) with no distinction between the ribcage and the stomach. You should show some difference between the two sections (pic related) if you're going to construct.
Hope this helped, keep it up anon. You're getting it.

Don't get caught up in too many details or muscles, or too many values. Think simply, paint simply. Work big to small, work the large masses and get them correct.
>>
>>2681589
It depends on how much of a beginner they are. Total beginners won't have the ability to fine tune the differences between their drawings and the ref, so faces are hard since it's really difficult to capture a likeness. With still lives and fruits at least you can have a viewer point out what kind of object it is, even if you completely mess up.

If you're a beginner who's been at it for a while, try portraits. It'll definitely help you sight proportion more easily.
>>

it's probably because the eyes and eyebrows weren't built on the same line, if that makes sense. So the far eye also isn't parallel to the nose and mouth.

Can someone explain to me the benefits of constructing objects out of basic shapes?

>>
>>2681628
It keeps things drawn correctly--it will have the proper volume, things will be aligned, things will sit in perspective, it will be easier to relate it to other objects and forms in the scene, foreshortening is easier etc. It also helps a lot when it comes to lighting and rendering things.

>How to make
You use lines like from lesson 1.
Just make sure to make each line with a purpose. To curve the leaf, to draw a stem, to draw a vein.

>texture
Think of a pattern. Like a striped shirt. Now, when you draw in 3D, patterns are now called textures because they aren't flat. They curve and such to bend with the form of the object like wrinkles on a shirt.

>depth
How far something is relative to something else. Just draw something bigger and something small. Depth. It's more complex than that, but perspective is more or less like that. There's line weight too to emphasize what's closer than the other one.

>shading
The closer your lines are together, the darker they seem from afar. The further they are, the lighter they are. Use this to shade objects with spacing between your shading lines.

http://drawabox.com/article/construction

Did you read this page?
>>
>>2681726
Sorry :(
>>
>>2681729
Yes, but I don't get how you go from a few simple lines to more complex ones. It' like going from riding tricycle to an airplane.
>>
>>2681741
The simple lines are a set up for the whole image, which is why it's called construction. It's like constructing a floor for a house before you can put walls and a roof.

For example in lesson 2, you learn form intersection which is the basic forms, sphere, cube, cylinder, cone and pyramid being put together to form something more complex.

That's what's being done from lesson 2 onwards. You still use what you learned from lesson 1 and 2.

For example, putting a sphere on top of an upside-down cone would make? An ice cream.

Just apply that concept to everything else.

That's the first step is building with those shapes. After that, would be to turn those shapes into an organic form. You can draw over your shapes or draw it next to it, or just visualize the shapes in your head once you're good enough at it.

Remember organic forms are those blobs and sausages in lesson 2 except they aren't just blobs and sausages. For an animal, you might think of the blob as meat, don't think of muscles or anything, just think of a huge lump of meat. That's the basis for an animal.

Now, put a coat of fur, which is texture, over the lump of meat and it's getting to an animal. After that would be to darken some areas to show depth in the form, that light wraps around the form instead of being the same all over it. Shading and depth are kind of together, in that where light doesn't hit is where depth can be seen as well.
>>
>>2680216
What he means by "You're symbol drawing" is that you're not drawing what you see, you're drawing what you know. You've left out major and key defining parts of his face, literally stylizing every part of it, ESPECIALLY the eyes. Read the beginners guide, it tells you about this.

No, I don't think it is because it's not on purpose. If you knew the fundamentals, spent the time grinding off of drawing from real life, THEN went back and removed and simplified your drawings to make them your own with a good foundation, then that would be considered stylizing in my opinion. With this it's just unconscious inability

>>
loomis is haaarrrrdddd
>>
>>2681924
for me landscapes take a lot of devotion

you start out with something similar to what you drew, then you add details upon details upon details until you get something you're comfortable with

also use a smaller brush size
>>
>>2681924

give the eye clear visual cues for distance:
individual grass blades visible in the foreground, trees and patches of grass in the next layer and mountain ridges in the most distant.
>>
>>2681924
If this is too hard, then simply make it simpler and start by painting landscapes black and white. Try to nail down the big shapes first. Look at some landscapes of you favorite artist and look at their strokes, study them. And last but not least practice a ton.

Is it bad to copy from stylized art for learning?

Should i copy exclusively from life?

How do you feel about artists who only drew fanart and despite only drawn less than 5 times per character, yet still manages to get everything right down to proportions, perspective etc. all while using this method?

Copying from life will help you a lot more in getting better as a beginner, it trains your eye and gets you to think responsibly about the fundies you'll be tackling down the road.

You can still copy anime or whatever for fun, but I don't think it'll be of much help until you get good enough to stylize your own stuff and can understand what's going on in what you're copying.
>>
>>2682219
Noted. I did that one for fun, i don't want to get bad habits and just copy anime fanart. Thanks for the heads up.

So is "drawing on the right side of the brain" the best place for me to start? I downloaded it but was somewhat putoff by the need for all the weird viewfinders and the like. I bought the black card anyways but I'm not sure where to find a sheet of acrylic plastic.
>>
>>2682267
I'd recommend "Keys to drawing" more if you want a practical approach that gets you drawing in the first pages of the book.

"right side of the brain" is a meme book. It's basically an ad pamphlet for the courses this woman shills.
>>

It wouldn't surprise me, I was already really sceptical because of all the pseudoscience the book had going on.

You guys are both retarded. I'm the guy who drew the original "symbol drawn" black guy. Both of you accusing each other of being me in order to win an argument. Grow up man. If one of you is the original guy who sperged at me, God help you. That was days ago and you're still thinking about it?
>>
>>
>>2682312
Mouth slid off the center line, should be more in line with the nose. Not sure what happened with the ear. Good nose and brow ridges and the picture's nice to look at.
>>2682329
Like the other guy said, your head is fucked. Don't bother with details at your stage anon. Just practice the method, and watch some facial feature tutorials because you've symbol drawn everything. I suggest Proko on youtube
>>
>>2682413
Loomis man. Even though it's heavily stylized, there are fundamental problems. Eyes are misplaced, mouth and nose are misplaced, hand perspective is fucked. Breasts are misplaced (her left is plain gone), shading is all off, no defined light source.

His legs are way to short. Other than that a lot of small proportion errors, you need to compare everything to everything.
>>
>>2682575
even though what he said is true, his try to make it better wasn't really better...
>>
>>2682575
thanks for the feedback. i'm using the keys to drawing trick where you measure with your pencil... and its already ten times better than any figure I've ever drawn.

I can see how the legs are too short now, and also the problems with the arms. Thank you!

Yeah! I've only skimmed through Lumis so far and I've seen that part, but I haven't put it into use yet. Trying to work through Keys of Drawing first, but maybe I could work on both simultaneously.

Looking at my picture now, I can see that the head is too big, his forearms and hands are too small and his chest is too big. Here's a slight rework, still trying to figure out the head and legs though.

Amateur spriter here. I wanna make a game; how do these sprites look?
>>
>>2682745
Personally I don't see a point in learning to draw without loomis. If you aren't constructing the human form through 3D shapes you're basically just symbol drawing. It's not like you can't get a pleasing looking image without fundamentals but you'll plateau hard.
>>2682776
Looks good bro, hard to give much of a critique without knowing anything about the game though
>>
>>2682776
They look just as you say, amateur.
You seem to lack the pro feel and I don't know enough about spriting to fix it.
>>
>>2682776
they look like you used Pokemon as a reference
>>
>>2682776
Nice designs, colorful, lots of character.

They look a bit flat, like paper dolls.
Dither some shadows if you want more form, will make them somewhat less cartoony though.

Lay down a drop shadow and that should help you see how to improve the shading.

Rework your outlines until they feel orgasmic. They arent jaggy bad but they arent flawless smooth either.
>>
>>2682809
Not reading the OP for one, not going to critique you until you do, either.
