Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VfDTpLLVl5bWUGWguswKpPFml533luI8-NBd1EGYHnA/edit

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Don't worry about getting good. Worry about expressing yourself. Cindi Lauper is no world class opera singer, and no revolutionary lyricist, but when she sings true colors you feel like she's singing to you personally. If you figure out how to use your drawings to express yourself, you'll practice more and with less stress.
>>
>>2683357
Your face is so much flatter than the reference. The ref has a strong cromagnon brow, such girth in the nose, and the lip protrudes, I don't see any of that in your sketch, and it isn't just from the lack of rendering. Your lines aren't representing the forms as is.
>>
>>2683425
you vertical lines are diverging which would cause an abnormally long jawline. either fix the 'pivot' on the sphere part so the head tilts back or make the center line of the face match the angle of the pivot line so that the face tilt matches the sphere. and maybe dont use stupid colors for such small exercises

Hey guys.
This is an original superhero of my series where I transform friends of mine into comic books characters.

What do you think about the proportion on this piece? Are her shoulders too wide? Are the breasts too high?

I know punches thrown doesn't look like that, but in comic book style it's important to exaggerate stuff like that
>>
>>2683740
link?
>>
>>2683736
erm, assuming you wanted to create a design of your own, I wouldn't suggest doing any of what you did to construct your figure.

You don't know what to draw from imagination, and you don't know how these shapes are formed in a real life, but you still went ahead and took 'measurements' from the reference and then did some wacky concept you thought up of, I would guess. Therefore, I think you should first try and just draw the creature in your reference, and other things from life. Draw cyliners, simple shapes, and first see how and what shapes need to be formed to make a good concept. What shapes are in humans, what shapes can be used to construct beetles, machines, etc. Then you can figure out form, line, and value to finish off the concept, which is what you dived face-first into too.

Learn what you think you need to draw on the paper (or screen).

>>2683740
I'd like to also know what book you're referring to.
>>
>>2683740

>>2683761

>>
>>2683761
>Why does your construction process look like you know what you're doing yet the final product shows none of that?
Usually a sign of inexperience and lack of knowledge. He can construct a body using shapes, but it's anyone's guess what he attempted to do after that. Total loss of perspective and 3 dimensional form.

>that eye thing with the lazy eyelid lines
>>
>>2683797
Posts like this make me understand why there are so many LOOMIS and READ THE STICKY posters.

Like come on anon, are you even trying? The drawing is just bad. Any normie will tell you it's great because it looks like a human. You need to learn 3D shapes, perspective, (including tilt, twist, foreshortening) anatomy, the list goes on.

I sincerely want you to train hard and become a very skilled, successful artist. If not for your own benefit, in order for you to come back to this altercation and realize I was right. You'll come back and think "Wow that drawing really was total shit, guess I just had thin skin"

Seriously anon you don't even realize 1% of the skills you're missing.
>>
>>2683908
You're right. I know. The problem is that you're a total dick about it. It's not cool, man, this was supposed to be a nice and confortable board for people to open up. I have always been VERY embarassed of my drawings but a BEGINNER THREAD convinced me to show one and ask for directions.
You, on the other side, enjoy going to the very same BEGINNER THREAD and be an offensive asshole to the rookies.
>>
>>2683899
>>total loss of perspective and 3D form.

>>2683899

>>2683836
>>
>>2683916
To be honest, you had it coming. There are two stickies worth of information and you ignored them. Stickies are there for a reason. If they didn't exist, every thread on /fit/ would be
>hey /fit/ i want to get in shape what should i do
Every thread on /ic/ would be
>hey /ic/ i dont really draw lol but how is my drawing i drew for a friend what should i work on

The art world is a tough place, if you can't take even the meager criticism I gave you, you won't make it. Even the most talented artists get slammed by criticism. If your piece had shown any sort of attempt at skills addressed in the sticky, I would have been nicer. I know it's a beginner thread. But at your stage you might as well be in /v/ drawthreads.

There was nothing offensive about that post.

If anything you deserve to have your feelings hurt and told, "Are you even trying?", because it most certainly does not look like you've gone through Loomis, or any of the other recommended books before coming here.

The beginner thread is for people who've gone through the sticky, fixed and polished their fundamental errors, and then have come back when they're stuck on either parts of a book or things the books don't teach.

There's tons of information on

>"What do you think about the proportion on this piece? Are her shoulders too wide? Are the breasts too high?"

, and even a whole book which ic gives you the link to, and instead you've chosen to ignore it and shit on this thread even more.

That drawing IS bad, and anon is just telling you the truth.

nope. you should be able to construct a figure with the bean. your beans are so out of proportion they dont even resemble a simplified ribcage/hips. look at the top left. its not even shaped right now to mention its too thick. top right doesnt have the hip bend and the hips are as wide across as the shoulders. go through all of prokos videos about anatomy and the bean/robo bean. and read loomis figure for what its worth

youre supposed to be able to literally attact the arms, legs and head to the bean. your beans are so fucking off they dont even resemble the human torso. the pic should make that very clear. the fact you cant see even that is a huge problem. i redlined the best i could but my laptop is being laggy. the issues with your beans should be very obvious though

if youre having trouble making it look like a 'bean' in general you shouldnt be moving onto figure yet. you need to study forms for a while. desu, those are sorta shitty reference for beans to begin with. all of them are simple from the side poses so theres no real forshortening/twisting/pinching contracting to be had where the bean really shows its use as a learning tool.

I've spent the whole day on this figuring out why. Anyone can help?
>>
>>2684992
You're missing planes of the nose. You're also missing the brow ridge which connects to the nose. The eyes are symbol drawn, they are actually fairly complicated to construct properly.

I can't tell if you used loomis, but if you didn't, try that too. Look up construction of the facial features. They all have major and minor planes, without them, you get a comical looking face.

>>2685166
Are you from a religious family? Luckily my parents don't care if I draw but I did have some relatives tell me that drawing is a sin who then proceeded to tear up my shit. I still can't be caught drawing nude figures either.

Just try to keep it a secret, by a small sketchbook and sketch in the bathroom or sit on a bench outside and draw from life.
>>2685258
What specifically are you having trouble with? Like just drawing it or the concept behind it?
>>
>>2685286
I need the step before the first plane. Did he start with a ball, because I'm having difficulty with the nose and right ear.
>>
>>2685294
Yeah the ball is a base but you build on top of it so you carve in the area for the eyes and make the nose jut out.

I'd say for the nose just keep grinding if you can't get it. (you should understand basic perspective so if you don't that might be part of the problem) It's basically just trapezoid looking for coming out of the head. Keep grinding, it took me a while to get it too. Just imagine it like you would imagine a box.

For the ear just make sure you understand perspective again. Draw through the entire form so you know where it should be on the other side and then just draw it.

I know it seems kinda complicated but just keep drawing it over and over. That's the only thing that will really help you. Also maybe give hampton's head construction a quick look, it helped me out since it's a bit simpler than Loomis'.

just picking up things that I found aesthetically
pleasing in other people's art and doing studies
so I think I learned things out of order and didn't get fundamentals. That's why I'm having an
especially difficult time unlearning the bullshit I
taught myself.

I reduced the size of the eyes and pushed the hairline so it follows the box thingy. Also, was I supposed to move the mouth lower or was I supposed to remove it?
I know someone said to reduce the size of thee hand, but every other resource says it should remain the size of the face. When I made the hand smaller, it looked odd

The religion most people hate atm. Different people believe different stuff tho so my parents didn't really buy into that but some people did. I also had a bunch of Muslim and Christian friends that thought Pokemon and yugioh were sinful acts cause demons or something.

confidence comes with skill
learn skill, get better, thats the purpose of a beginner right?

think of it this way. a beginner draws a picture, its bad because he is a beginner but he doesnt chicken scrawl, he draws about 30 individual lines. another parallel beginner draws the same picture, this time he chicken scrawls he draws 90 individual lines. surely that second beginner got 3 times as better since he drew three times as many lines? is this not how it works.

No, that's just rough contour drawing.
You need to abstract parts of the body into basic 3D forms to establish proportion and perspective.

>>2686311
A mechanical pencil is perfectly fine. It might be a bit difficult if you want to do smooth shading but that won't greatly affect your improvement.
>>
>>2686399
20
>>
>>2686399
Depends on how fast you want to improve.
Only you can answer that.
Also don't mistake quantity for quality.
One page of focused studies will be better than ten pages of mindless doodles.
>>
>>2686399
Dont focus on how many pages you fill. Focus on how long you draw

drawing is scary before you start because you don't know if what you're about to draw will be really good or really bad
>>
What is your daily drawing schedule like?

What resources do you use when working on each drawing subject in your schedule?

I want to start drawing at least 4 hours a day but I won't be able to make any real progress if I don't make myself a schedule and stick to it.

i'm awful and don't know if i'm progressing
i do some random poses from imagination, then some poses from reference, then try to draw a town or castle or something, then try to do something creative
i throw in random hand, muscle, and bone studies too
this is basically all i do, i try to understand lights and depth too but i dont entirely get it
>>

Get cheap newsprint and some charcoal and practice on giant sheets.
>>
>>2686440
stay light with the pencil and have patience with yourself so you can figure out whats wrong with your drawing. learn by fixing it. DON'T DRAW DARK LINES. that's the only thing that can stop you from making it better.

The grind refers to the endless practice you need to do to improve.
>>
>>2686596
Mostly life studies, right?
>>
>>2686600
That would be the best since life studies offer a wealth of knowledge. You can also do studies of diagrams/exercises from the books you read, master studies, value studies, mark-making practice, value studies, experimentation, etc.

The most important thing is to dedicate time and patience, even if you don't feel like it, push through. Every drawing you do, strive to be better than the last one.
>>
>>2686600
Basically drawing until you can see what needs to be worked on and focusing on that until you're better at it and repeating the process again
>>
>>2685620
I would definitely copy shit from life until you get decent at it. It's not necessary to become a living camera but still. Every once in a while post your work here to see if you've become good enough. At the same time it wouldn't hurt to study some dynamic sketching and apply it to your life drawing. It's what I've been doing now for quite a while.

>>

>>
>>2682947
it doesn't look bad for a quick sketch, but since you're looking likeness, the first on what i suggest you to do is either shrink the forehead or curve the hair line as it looks very uneven.
next lower the mouth somewhat and move it to the right so it can be more directly below the nose
last i suggest is add a bit of lines by the ear to show a side burn even if the reference person doesn't have any, as it looks more in place since they seem to have a beard
also maybe raise the right eye a bit higher and see how that looks
>>
>>2686657
>If you need external motivation and structure, sign up for a class.
Where would I find the information necessary for doing this?
>>
>>2686727
Local colleges if you got the $$$$, small local studios if you don't. Stay the FUCK away from for-profit colleges like The Art Institute.

If your google-fu of your city/town doesn't pull up any info about classes in the area you can sign up for, check community boards, local newspapers etc for postings.

If none of that brings anything up for you, you can try online courses. New Masters Academy is reputable, though fair warning, it's mostly traditional mediums.

Well now I know how to call these things I draw all the time.
Building the figures out of 3d shapes will take alot of time, I'm afraid that the proportions will look completley messed up before i finish a whole figure, thats usualy what happends when I draw to slow.
I don't see many people draw weird sceletons alot but i will give it a shot.

It's your shape and form. Everything looks off cause the 3 dimensional shapes aren't there and the placements of the features are not on a 3d shape.

So I've been trying to art for a bit now, and I feel like I can replicate things fairly ok from images, like I can draw a blokes face or a building or replicate a character decently (with a few odd lines here or there probably, I hope I'm not overstating things or anything, even in that sort of stuff I have a long way to go), I just keep running into this problem of trying and failing to draw stuff from my imagination. I've got lots of ideas and shit, but every time I try to draw something from my mind and utilize the mechanics of anatomy and perspective and such, I just fall flat every time. Anyone got any advice/resources/exercises for this sort of stuff? I know /ic/ tells us we can make it, but sometimes it just feels like I'm hardwired to not see shit right in my mind.

the reason i love this board is because people dont give a shit about you tiny little feelings and actually give cold harsh truths so you can get angry and actually improve. good thing that you accepted the critique being an asshole is part of this site
>>
>>2688173
you are starting right? study actual anatomy, i know you feel like you need to put your ideas out and thats good, but you need to learn the basics first, learn how a body works learn how a face works in the meantime try to incorporate your more imaginative drawings with you realistic drawings, and you'll see diference
>>
>>2686673
cant really anything without your previous work so i'll just say what i see
construction of the face is good, everything is in place
fragile trace, try to make a line one continuous stroke and not multiple
however you deserve to be called a lazy ass for posting such a lazy effortless drawing in here and ask for an opinion
