Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

To me this picture looks totally fine! I'm now so fucking concerned about myself. Could someone please elaborate more what's wrong with the proportions?
>>
>>2666720
I'm not the artist just to clear it out but just curious and concerned. For example I can't see how the eyes are too far apart from each other and how can the guy know about the ear if it's not visible? I mean the picture isn't a exact copy of the photo (comparing atm) but I can't see the things the critic pointed out right now.
>>
>>2666724
I'm that anon, sorry for any confusion. I was talking about your face, not the one I drew, lol..
>>
>>2666694
I'm the guy before that said you don't have good brush work.
It's more obvious now that I can see your work process that you do a lot of back and forth, so that the line direction is a little bit muddled.
From what I see in van gogh's work does is use his brush strokes to flesh out shapes so I would try avoid zipzag lines.

Be careful of your values. You are doing too much contrast and extreme values where it's not needed. For example, on the hair, the highlights are actually a middle grey but you put them almost white. Try to separate your lights and your shadows, then keep each of those sections relatively close value-wise within themselves. So in the shadows don't go jumping from dark shadow to bright reflected light--that difference in value is more subtle than you might expect.

Is the brushing/shading inherently bad and should I actually search of better ways or can this be improved?
If so, what thoughts can you share that can aid me in improving? Thanks

Second I did, very mediocre I guess, but I'm still trying to find and discover what works.
>>
>>2666759
Post your ref. It looks like it is a very ambient lighting scenario so there needs to be very careful control of values and edges to show the form. Right now you are painting it with a hard brush and the strokes are all these small hard shapes or even lines. Try to use tones and larger masses rather than small details.
>>
>>2666766
>tones and larger masses
Do you mean mostly for the hair?
And use larger masses of brushes so it makes the details more uniform and more natural looking?
>>
>>2666779
Yeah like rather than trying to paint each strand of hair or eyelash instead try to paint what all those hairs added together looks like. Instead of painting lots of small brushstrokes over the face creating a weird texture try to get the main forms and planes of the head and face.

Anyways, for started you need to stop tracing and actually try to draw it yourself. Once you can copy the shapes learn to see the accurate values. Look at how bright your painting is compared to the reference image. Rather than start on white and moving darker, try starting with a middle grey and then creep towards the extremes.

I couldn't give you an honest answer. At least a week, if it could be mastered in a day, everyone could do it. Just take it one step at a time and you'll get better with each iteration. Michael Hampton's Figure drawing design and invention is in my opinion a very good introduction to figure drawing, however it's probobly unuseable until you already have a semi competent understanding of form and perspective

If I would grind still lifes for a week or 4 before even worrying about drawing something as stupidly complex as a person. It will develop you form perspective and ability to draw what you want to.

There isn't, It's all imaginary. Made up. You think everyone is ahead of you, but that's only because people never show how far behind they are. It doesn't matter where other people are as long as you improve anyways. I don't even really compare unless I'm studying something. It's pointless when progression is a long term process.

You can draw 16 hours a day and still be shit at it. This board likes to equate time to progression, but that's not at all necessarily true. It depends on what you take away from the time you draw and if you actually get better.

You should also probably just use a fuckin bic unless you feel you really need $20 worth of microns a week.
>>
>>2667588
>This board likes to equate time to progression
I like to equate time to progression, because the more physically invested I am, the more I feel like I have progressed. It's more of a mental game than anything, maybe? It can't really be ever figured out since I always work long hours and don't want to spend only 3 hours a day to draw.
>>
>>2667430
when you're learning, you're not a professional. It's an eyesore, but drawing is drawing and you can draw something amazing on lined paper
>>
>>2667589
It depends on you and how you learn things. For me it's like running vs interval training. You can run for half an hour at 6 mph and that's great, but your body gets accustomed to it, you don't burn many calories, etc. If you do interval training and really push yourself, it's like forcing yourself to think critically about what you want to learn out of your art and makes you aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

But I'm one of those evil "hobbyists" around here who sometimes gets an hour a day to work on art and will still end up being better than most here because I don't take it so seriously, haha

Don't be afraid to come out of the midtone. Occlusion shadows and highlights would really make this malfoy pop. For personal reference, in nearly every photo I've studied, the highlight of the eye is pure white or extremely close to it. In every photo there is always at least 1 pixel with a value of 0 (white) and 1 pixel with a value of 100 (black). usually the 0 is in the yes or sometimes it's a bright light or a reflective button, and the black is usually in the nostrils, pupils, corners of mouth, areas like that. If you don't use the entire value range for a portrait you'll get a muddy, clay look.

I decided to go back right to the beginning and run through the fundamentals because I am having a hard time creating the things I need to make.

Right now I'm failing contours in "Keys To Drawing".

I figure if I don't need a certain fundamental skill along the way, I'll just end up breezing through the book I'm reviewing and I'll just stick to a path of Dodson-Draw a Box-Loomis-Vilppu or whatever. I forgot the order.

Anyway. I'm 32 years old and I feel like I've failed my entire life. Can someone help me out?

The pictures I'm posting are of a webcomic character from the beginning of August to the end of the month. I studied a lot of construction, Proko, and Loomis. Hips still confuse me though. Badly.

I kind of meant in general, like showing others your art at all. I feel like your answer applies.
>>
>>2668000

You working from a reference to compare the two or is this original?

Cause you have an unrealistically amount of folds going on. If it's from reference and I don't know what's up, then that's cool. Otherwise you folds are going to be more complex around the joints and a more scarce and large away from them.

Like, your folds are a lot like how you did her hair. The hair's fine, btw. Just you went pretty all-out there.
>>
>>2668009
Posting your work helps to build a following, which isn't a bad thing to have.
it also lets you show off and receive praise, which boosts the ego and makes art more enjoyable.

Of course that last part only applies if you don't post on /ic/, which is famously not a hug box.
>>
>>2668022
no reference, i have not much experience with the folds, maybe the line of the folds have to be more homogeneous, and less saturated from random lines. in the chest zone they looks really weird.
>>
>>2668008
Looks like a normal block-in. At this stage you just need to clean it up. Get some cleaner and more precise shapes in important areas, and in other areas you can start to blend things together a bit more.

I was getting frustrated when i was doing this with his video, but i kept trying and trying, slowly understanding, and then i got that eureka moment and made huge leap in understanding. This shit just takes time. Watch his video, draw alng with him, then go and try on your own. Next day repeat, you don't have to watch whole thing just parts you think are crucial. Very helpful are gesture he does at hte end, try to copy every line he do, eventually you will understand enough to do them by yourself. I myself watched only this video many, many times, sometimes whole, sometimes jus parts of it.

i feel like im lacking direction. i practice the same shit every day and draw bad images. some days i make small improvements when i stumble across a good technique or method of thinking but i cant shake the feeling that im doing things wrong. its only natural to draw bad things when you are bad, by drawing more you get better. but is it not also true that practicing something badly will only make you better at doing it badly?

sometimes i make improvements but a lot of the time i dont. i feel like im lacking direction. if only i had a higher skilled version of myself to tell me exactly what to do.

i dont mean to be so self deprecating, i do draw good things sometimes and i do make improvements. i just cant help but think i have some holes in the way i look at things. its really not too large a problem and i only feel like this occasionally, its just now is one of those occasions.

You don't need to. Just keep at what you're doing. It's not wrong. It feels wrong, but we all feel that way. It's later when you get better, your confidence will build up and you'll realize what you need to do.

As well as with progress, it is like a rocket sometimes with long plateaus. It's weird like that. You go up in increments instead of steady progress. I guess you can say your brain just suddenly understands the information after a while and clicks so improvement is all jumpy.

The reason people are sounding so impressed is because they probably haven't determined the time they "truly" started drawing with the intent to get better. Looking at your one week display reminded me the one semester in art class where I managed to produce my first moderate level drawings

are you mocking loomis-senpai?
>>
>>2668878
Sorry bud, but you're pretty bad all around. That hand you've drawn shows me that you don't quite know how to draw from observation yet, so to start with you'll need to study from a book (Keys to Drawing or Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain for starters) to improve there and then move on to Fun With a Pencil. You can do it.

What's the best way to study Michael Hamptons figure drawing design and invention, is it just to apply the techniques to your own drawings or is it like loomis where you have to draw whats shown on every page

Nope. Some of the books in the sticky are legit. I'd recommend Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain to demystify the process, followed by Keys to Drawing to build a fundamental base. From there, let interest guide you.
>>
Loomis/Proko/Vilppu aren't doing it for me, and I learn best by video anyway. So how do I go about learning how to draw people correctly? I have tons of anatomy books/etc but they seem to not be helping.
>>
>>2668561
work on a higher resolution and lower your brush size
>>
>>2668553
I think I have lazy eye too. People have asked if I have it and I sometimes feel like my left eye is starting to go in different direction and I need to ''keep it in check''.. How can I know if it's affecting my depth perception?
>>
>>2669011
Hey at least you can keep an eye on your drawing and one on the streets
>>
>>2668974
I had that idea a while ago but never knew the font the posters used.
>>

lol. Doesn't seem hard to fix though, just play a pirate ~3hrs a day and do some exercises. Guess I have to just go get diagnosed.

Lazy eye anon here, how can I check if my perception is fucked or not?

Nvm, found an internet test and according to it I need to go to see optrometrist. FUCK my life.

I have been depressed for a while and this drawing thing is the only thing that has given me hope. Of COURSE I have some bullshit condition that affects the only thing I'm into in this world. Fuck. My. Life.

Tried to draw Mikey's Rebellious Slave. Pretty shit ain't it?
>>
>>2669132

On a technical level, yeah, it isn't good. But it's not all that bad for a beginner's observational drawing. That's a good direction you're going in.

There's a definite lack of anatomy knowledge or form going on. Those come with time and differing study anyway.

If you have negative feelings about your skills, you shouldn't. Counter productive. This is pretty much what you're going to be turning out. The idea is to see that what you made is flawed, find those flaws, and fix them in your next drawing.
>>
>>2669001

This is a weird question. Proko and Vilppu have videos.

What exactly is your problem with drawing people? The anatomy books aren't going to help at all if you can't fundamentally draw to begin with.

Eh I just feel disappointed whenever I finish a drawing, knowing that there is much more to be improved and feel bad over small mistakes I don't notice. I should probably stop doing that.

Also here's another quickie I made right now. This time it's the Dying Slave.
>>
>>2668088
The eye in the centre of her face has a subtly wrong angle. It's easy to pass over the first time but it keeps drawing you back to it.
>>
>>2668962
Lines are a little sloppy but the form is good. The one on the right middle almost looks human; did you abort a child and are currently projecting?
>>
>>2668428
Tim Curry?

The eye on the right has some messed up eye shadow. You might have combined the eye lashes with some make-up / shadow to make one super shape. This makes it really confusing to look at. Try differentiating the shapes through values or something to give that eye more definition.
>>
>>2668553
Doesn't affect you drawing from a 2D screen man, don't worry about it.

pretty okay shit desu.

but when trying to study from another's drawing, pay attention to the angle of the lines/shading. you can very clearly see how the marks on the right drawing were placed/imagine the hand movements involved, but you seem to be scribbling in any direction when you shade.

also work on your shape recognition, your kitty (while recognizable and pretty damn good from a layman's perspective) looks all wonky and stretched. draw from life more and practice replicating shapes a couple of times on your paper. a good way to do this is to draw/imagine a perpendicular "grid" on the reference, and sketch them lightly into your drawing
>>
>>2670215
Thanks man!
>>
>>2670215
>stretched

just resized it on paint so it looks out of its shit, but maybe it looks a bit stretched at the end
>>
>>2668834
It shows. Broaden your horizons, stop drawing single eyes. It's incredibly boring and done by every artist who likes to think of it as proof that they're "good".
>>
>>2669147

What I mean is, Vilppus videos suck, and Proko is cringeworthy and not very helpful.
>>
>>2670449
you're probably not at the level where you can understand villpu's video's yet. I too still have a hard time understanding them. Just draw whatever you want for now and get better by simply drawing everyday. In time you will get at a level where you can begin to understand and appreciate his video's
>>
So I've been drawing for about a year and I need a really good book to start learning how to paint.
Any suggestions my fellow /beg/s ?
