Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Yes, drawabox has some problems with the learning curve. Try drawing the diagonal cubes separately first, in your drawing they are com[letely off.

>>2663574
>don't worry
Yes he should worry, his perspective is wrong.

>>2663606
>Draw a box is complete shit a perspective
Not really. Yeah he has issues with cylinders, but they are difficult.

>learning from him or her will make you worse
No it will not.

>That drawing is a fisheye perspective of a flat wall of cubes, not a sphere of cubes, this is fucking confusing for beginners
That is a sphere of cubes.

>None of those "rotated" cubes would share the same vanishing point or horizon line
And they fucking don't. He actually mentions it in the exercise.

Keep in mind you don't HAVE to learn from one source your entire life like some kind of university student. It is best to learn the same topic from multiple sources because people explain things differently and you'll pick up what is intuitive to you.

Plan the line out in your mind before drawing it, every single time you draw the line.
>>
>>2663680
That's a valid point, I still can't get my head around making things 3D
It feels really weird because I have more or less good understanding of what perspective is and how it works, and how basic light works

I don't feel like photo references are helping me much in this matter since it's originally a 2D object, I probably should do some objects from real life
>>
>>2663662

I would go over on a new layer and make cleaner lines. Lineart isn't a quick thing, it takes time and really tests the patience/endurance of an artist.
>>
>drawabox
>you're supposed to draw lines in pen before you even know what they're going to look like, and then you're encouraged not to fix or erase them

fuck that I'm using pencil and I'm using a rubber, the choice is:
>use pencil, correct mistakes until I know what I'm doing
>use pen, don't correct mistakes, keep drawing shite until the ink runs out
>>
>>2663761
Actually, encouraging you to draw in pen is probably the best thing drawabox does. Stop bitching and put your pencil away.
>>
>>2663761

Also, do a rendering book of whatever tools you are using (pen, pencil, etc)
>>
>>2663858

The idea is to develop confident strokes and learning to do it right the first time, rather than being timid and having do-overs. Practicing that way makes you deliberate, which is a good habit to have even if you might do a pencil underdrawing for finished works down the line.
>>
I'm fairly new here so I don't know the local meems. What are fundies? I know it means fundamentals, but are you guys referencing anything in particular? Sorry for being a retard.
>>
>>2663761

>use pen, don't correct mistakes, keep drawing shite until the ink runs out

You correct your mistakes by noticing you made them, going "god fucking damn it I just fucked this up." and trying the exercise again, this time not making the mistake. And if you make the same mistake a second time, you do it all over again until you get it right.

I find this is actually a pretty good incentive to learn to get it right. Just going "oops" and whipping out the eraser doesn't have much consequence. You'll notice that lots of digital artists especially will do the same stroke like 30 times and keep ctrl z-ing it because they never developed line control, because they crutch on the undo button and just keep firing buckshot until they accidentally get it right. When you see somebody do a good ink drawing, you see them do their lines with careful precision, on the first go, because the medium is unforgiving.
>>
>>2663872

I think people have different ideas of what they are (and how important certain ones are to their goals) but these are what I think of when I hear "fundamentals"

Understanding shapes / forms.
Construction
Color theory (and values)
Composition
Anatomy (if you're figure drawing)
Proportions
Perspective
Gesture

I've seen some artists build 3D models to pose when trying to consistently sketch/paint a character whom otherwise doesn't have any real-life reference photos to go off of, eg monsters or machines.

I don't really consider it cheating if it's just for having the reference at all to maintain consistency.

What kind of modeling and posing programs do people use, if any?

Another day, more shit. I cannot believe after 3 months of trying to draw torsos I still can't. I have tried so many fucking methods and I feel like I just can't retain it no matter how much I watch/draw it. At this point I am starting to feel that I just don't have what it takes to draw or the discipline to stick to trying to learn one thing at a time. For example I said I would start learning perspective and guess what? I worked on it for one night and haven't gone back to it. And yes I tried to imitate pops.

Yeah I use a reference most of the time. I feel I was better back when I started out and just drew and copied. At least I felt like I was improving. When I first started drawing back in March I was copying anime scenes and stuff that I liked with each time being faster and better. For example, I told myself I was going to do one portrait a day like the ones on the bottom of the image but stopped at the 3rd one cause I wanted to do more anime stuff. And here I am today and still can't draw for shit.

Anatomy is off, from your construction. Neck is too thick. Shoulder is too low on the closwer side - makes the forearm shorter to compensate.

Looks like he skipped leg day.
>>
>>2664849
welll drawing anime will not teach you the fundies you need to understand it. believe me i wanted to draw anime when i first got into art and stuff but in order to do it from imagination you need to know good construction and anatomy and what not. my stuff looked a lot like yours. draw every day, don't expect it to come quickly. whenever you draw from reference don't copy it , construct it to learn and understand it. vilppu said we dont copy the model we only use it as a tool. do more studies in this way. it takes a long time to get good, if you have only been drawing since march that is not a long time, it will take a few years of persistent study to get good. you need more mileage.
>>
>>2664849
also how long and often do you draw for. i would recommend you draw every day for several hours to improve.
also try drawing on paper more, you can scan in and line art it later, i think its much easier to construct on paper then fix it in digital later and line art and what not.

>>

I typically draw about 2 hours a day. On my good days I usually draw for a total of 5 ~ 6 hours but that is maybe once or twice a week at most.

>>2664860
>>2664873
I've tried many forms of construction and all in all I still can't "see" it. I have attempted to read 4 different books and only manage to get about 30 pages into them before I move on to something else.

>>2664875
>>2664868
No tracing but I tried my hardest to copy it as much as possible. Most of the traditional ones took me anywhere between 2 ~ 5 hours to draw. If I just traced them they would look much better.

A lot of the times I feel like I need someone to hold my hand in order for me to learn. For example back when I was in 9th grade and we were learning Algebra or whatever the hell they were teaching in that grade I could not wrap my head around it not matter how hard I tried. It wasn't until I sat down with the teacher and asked him to explain multiple problems to me step by step until I got it. Once it made sense to me I held the highest grade in that math class for the rest of the year.

Then it sounds weird you have issues with symbols, you should be pretty damn good at copying exactly what you see, being pragmatic and usually not creative.

If you are a total beginner then they might be okay in that they get you drawing and have someone looking over your shoulder giving out the occasional tip and helping break down any mental barriers you may have and giving you a place to start and a basic approach. They are typically not very useful for anyone past the very beginner stages imo though and are usually overpriced for what you get, though the ones you posted are quite cheap.

Welp, this exercise was more fun than expected.
Didn't really follow Drawabox's method, drawing the four rotated boxes at the top-bottom-left-right just confused me, so I kinda went along building it around the middle.

A couple of boxes are slightly off, but I'm satisfied, I learnt the principles and I feel good about it.

It looks a bit weird, but on paper the sides of the left and right boxes are parallel, I think my camera lens is fucked.

I need a sincere advice on discipline overall. I start a drawing thinking about lines and shaped, and when I least expect I'm throwing things randomly and hoping they'll work out.
>>
>>2665856
Lines are of a type (contour, cross-contour, aggregate, construction) of a character (orientation, straightness, length, breadth) of a tone (harshness, clarity).

Go examine drawings up close, notice how every line has a different purpose: some make up the shape, others make up the form, others the shading and colour, others still the character of the object. Note how a line can be used in multiple ways at once, how lines depend on other lines, and how the absense of line is itself a quality of a line. All that drawing is is applying lines and tricking the brain into seeing things that aren't there.

To get the most out of a cheap camera, just put it on a solid base to keep it from moving.
Then turn on all the lights you have, and look for the ISO parameter on the camera.
Set it as low as possible, it will remove the "noise" you see in the pictures by lowering its sensitivity to light.
It requires longer exposure, that's why I mentioned placing it on some furniture or otherwise stationary object.
Play with white and color balancement as needed, most phones can also do this.
Many people think I use a reflex or something professional, when I just use a very old base model compact camera from 2006 with more than 20 thousand shots taken.
I love it, Canon Digital Ixus 60.

Will adderal help me improve?

When I study, I always find myself getting distracted, when I work on a project I get distracted and bored and make mistakes. I feel like im not working hard enough, I try my best but I don't feel like I can do enough.

I want to be one of those people who can do maybe 2 or 3 really nice drawings a day, the kind of stuff you'd feel comfortable showing people.
Im tired of being person that draws until they are exhausted, only to find out there was a major mistake due to my losing interest too soon. I'd love to be one of those people who produces decent content more than once a day. I just cant stand it anymore, I work hours on something and at the end i think it looks alright, and someone points out a mistake, and I think "if i was just more focused I could have noticed that" I feel really disappointed with myself and my energy level.

however i find that an energy drink helps me focus, try to limit it to one a day , those java monsters are good for it. try that it may help. certainly safer than drugs i would think if you keep it to normal one a day before drawing.

T-thanks senpai. I'm not entirely new to drawing but I'd like to rebuild my foundation, specifically anatomy and proportion.

All I've done before is self taught construction. Right now I have zero skill in drawing from life and implementing values.

This is what I think is the peak of my ability right now and this took me longer than I'd like to admit. Where do you think should I go? Rebuild my construction or start drawing from life?
>>
>>2666163
one day i will draw hands at that level

then i will transcend
>>
>>2666163
You don't learn very much from that type of photo copying. You dont want to end up like this guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rXgFEskf2o

It is best to draw from life and focus on mileage and not on if you can produce anything of value right now. In my opinion one of the best things to draw is flowers outside.
>>
>>2666163
It's a bit hard to say without seeing much more of your work, but if what you say is true. Drawing from life would definitely help you since it'll bring your overall skill level up instead of being focused on one side. There's a lot to be gathered from drawing from life and with the level of construction that you have right now, it will broaden the range of what you'll be capable of drawing.

Tell me lads, is drawabox reliable? What does the pros of /ic/ think of it?
>>
>>2666200
Did part 1 for a week. Can draw straight lines reliably freehand with no ruler across a whole page. It's like magic, it's crazy.
>>
>>2666200
He is the epitom of /ic/, regurgitating knowledge from the masters, teaching while he himself cannot actually draw. All his examples will be off which can be confusing, but the learning process he puts out does work. As a student it is always best to learn from multiple sources in general. He isn't harmful but you aren't missing anything if you skip him.
>>
>>2666200
no one course is gonna make you an expert. drawabox needs supplements, extra reading, studies, life drawing etc from you as a student for it to be effective.
that being said, it's definitely one of the absolute best online courses out there.

can someone give me good critique? I think the thumbnail looks ok and the values are decent, but I feel like I'm falling extremely short on something. Could it be because I'm using a standard hardbrush and softbrush and should I invest in looking for some good brushes? Or is it something completely unrelated to tools?
Please give me some good critique anons.

you'd have to take the time to add details and textures. you could accomplish this with the standard hard round, or you could use someone else's brushes. try making one section look good with the hard round to see if its working for you

What is the first step to learning construction? Im ok(ish) when it comes to copying refs but even when I try to -construct- the thing in the refI fail badly and just end up copying what I see as a flat thing.
>>

Resisting the urge is a key factor. Don't give in to the easiest path to completing the picture - the result is not important, the process is.

If you're having trouble visualizing where the chest/pelvis etc. are in a pose, try getting a shit-ton of poses and drawing ONLY that part. Forget about copying and work on detecting where the 3D shape for construction is.

That's obviously someone following the crest of the pelvis and thinking it's horizontal. You know how people simplify the hips like a bowl? Someone is doing that but straight on.

Trying to get better at gesture drawing by doing the Croquis Cafe videos, can someone please let me know if I'm doing anything glaringly wrong? 1 minute for the top row, 2 for the middle and 5 minutes for the final one...

that's my issue. i drew all through high school but it was literally always just pencil and paper. i never worked with color because a) convenience and b) lack of understanding. now i'm trying to transition to a digital painting style because of inspiration from artists like wlop and alekina, but i have literally no idea where to start with coloring my sketches. help
>>
>>2666620
Use sai, it's intuitive and very easy to acquire.
Make liberal use of the marker tool.
Practice
>>
>>2666620
Learn how to do values as it's just using greyscale. Easier than colorpicking which takes a bit of intuition to learn.
>>
>>2666500
At least your understanding of proportions is better than the typical gesture /beg/gar.

How often are you looking at the subject vs looking at your drawing?
>>
>>2666335
are you comfortable with 3d shapes in different angles?

I, in fact, used sai and the marker tool to sketch the image I originally posted, lol. I just really have no idea where to begin with this coloring stuff. I guess I did mess around with sai a bit in high school, but I was going through an anime phase and basically just did that cringey stereotypical lineart with solid color and basic shading on the inside. I really want to achieve that digital painting look, but my biggest holdup is how to color.

The expression is different because you moved the eyebrows farther from the eyes, and the smile lines are hard to read, same thing with the wrinkles around the eyes. Other than that the hand is moved much more to the right, pay attention to other landmarks you can measure stuff like the hand up against in order to place it properly. Overall you still did a very good job capturing his likeness, keep up the good work anon!
>>
>>2666685
>>2666683
I'm this anon (didn't reply earlier). personally, I like your style a lot, but your proportions look like total shit. Her eyes are too far apart, it looks like someone stretched her face out sideways, and her ears are too short. Idk if this is intentional but it certainly would look better if you could sight proportions correctly.
>>
>>2666689
i agree with you! i knew ther were wrong things just couldn't see what, thanks
>>
>>2666690
np. I'm still studying proportion myself, but just stretching things around a bit on your face makes it look infinitely better.
>>
>>2666694
it really does! thanks man!
