Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new sticky in town! You can see it at:

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

get used to knowing what these sketches mean. its really to get knowing how the body's gesture can twist and turn with restrictions in place. once you get the hang of gesture drawing, move on to figure drawing, so you can apply gesture within human bodies. theres a reference thread in the catalog.

No, the cold truth is you will always symbolize here and there. You just have to work against it. Most people are never over it. Even after years. But dedicated artists can do it. So not to put you down but expect to put more time than a few weeks in for results. Keep at it.

Very much so.

Some advice:
Don't use texture brushes. Makes the halo(?) look weird. Blood splotches look flat. Colour of the shading is too high in contrast. The cheek/brow lines shouldn't be lines but just shadow would work fine. Image related.

Proportions look okay. The hatching needs work, your tool is probably too small for the area you're covering with it and there is too much space between each stroke which makes the hatching too noticeable and distracting. I suggest you try to work with a pencil to make broader strokes. Otherwise it looks decent.
>>
>>2670323
You need to work on proportions and Loomis. You misplaced her features so they look like they're floating across her face.

Also your perspective is in need of some work too. You're foreshortening is off in places. Are you thinking in 2D instead of 3D?

Should I completely forget about anatomy/drawing people for now and just focus on DAB/Dynamic Sketching for a while?

My goals:

concept/character art
painting/drawing landscapes/portraits/etc

Traditionally and digitally

Anywho, what should I be doing daily aside from the DAB/Dynamic Sketching work, one still life per day, more?

It's not just art I want to excel at, I want to write short stories/3D modeling as well but squeezing enough time for everything seems like it'd be impossible/VERY difficult
>>
>>2670327
consider practising for another 4 years
>>
>>2670352
DAB/Dynamic Sketching applies to anatomy/drawing people, so you should focus on it first. It's easier in my opinion to draw animals over people for some reason.

You should always do something with purpose, for example Dynamic Sketching gets into perspective heavily at times, so you should work on that with like buildings and such. You should also work on your digital painting skills here and there such as your rendering for different materials. Just use the basic shapes and pick some references up and study them.

That should last you a few months? Maybe two. You don't need too much direction, since as you work through it, you'll eventually see what you need when you need it.

You can use them whenever you want really. There's no set rules, just make sure you're not covering up your weaknesses with a different tool.

You can do as much as you have time for, anon, it all depends on how much you want to improve.

If there's one thing you have to absolutely do, it's build a habit. Discipline. By doing so, you'll continue to draw and improve even if there are slow days. To draw is to love the process, not just the end result.
>>
>>2670437

Part of my problem is not having a good "workstation".

Drawing flat seemingly makes things more difficult, especially when it comes to drawing accurate proportions for some reason. I seem to have an easier time with my page tilted upright/etc.

But when it comes to sketchbook sketches thats also a pain, measuring wise, otherwise I'm overthinking it.

So how would you draw the gesture when the model poses like that? You would draw a "STIFF GESTURE"?

>>
>>2670705
>>2670732

Depends on how you look at it. I have a fairly solid understanding of anatomy but the poses I end up with are often stiff and unappealing - gesture drawing is helping me quickly establish the masses and more dynamic actions which gives me a better construction to work from.

I can see how some people wouldn't have an issue with this and can get the motion they want right off the bat, I'm sadly not one of them.
>>
>>2670738

Not great, >>2670746 is right.

If it's really been 8 years, it's a great work. How old are you ? Keep drawing, I bet you'll improve fast, you have potential. Study all the fundamentals, Bridgman's anatomy book is good, try loomis too.

The drawing is nice, the colors are off.
Get a reference and look at the colors of a forest. Your shadows are too black, atmospheric perpective too strong and colors too saturated. Luckily that can be fixed with layers.

I wonder if there are that many people who can be good at gesture without practicing. It's pretty much like having a good visual library without doing the research. So I don't think anyone working on gesture would be wasting his time in any case.

drawing a bunch of squiggly lines is not a drawing

you can have a non static pose without wasting your time learning that nonsense. Because thats exactly what it is, nonsense.

>>
>>2670793
Gesture is about getting the movement, it doesn't have to be squiggly lines. And I sincerely doubt you can get really good at it without practicing but if you can, good for you.
Vilppu taught the people at Disney which were arguably the very best at it. Which is no wonder since animators spend their whole life doing gesture drawing.

>>
>>2670741
Fucking YES.

Its not hard to understand. If youre doing gesture studies from a live model and the model is standing straight upright then you're either late to the class or the model is a bad model (which i suspect is the answer youre searching for)

Gestures are meant to be experimental, almost warmups. Not three hour photostudies
>>
Please anons stop arguing about Gestures.
>>
>>2670808
Yeah some models are kinda out of it. Especially on longer poses. I find it useful to be on the side so you can use the curvature of the spine. But front poses are tricky.

I'm practicing circles/ellipses via DAB/Dynamic Sketching.

>Practice is all well and good but if you just keep doing the wrong thing you'll get better at being bad
Misconception really. Doing ellipses is just muscle memory so as long as you strive to make them right, they'll eventually become right. You have to really try to make them right, even if you get one right. That's good. That's improvement. Just keep it up. It takes a while. Much longer than lines because you're not really used to doing an elliptical shape. Even worse that you have to do it with your shoulder which you're not used to.

I've been doing them like this for maybe two or three months. What I thought was the accepted way to communicate gesture of a pose lacks the idea of "guiding lines" like guiding your eye from line to line. a year if you take it as seriously as a chinese schoolkid

~2 years otherwise

time to grind!
>>
I haven't really "drawn" anything, but my circles are definitely improving. I am able to hit a closed circle in one go, very little wobble and whatnot. Ellipses are still an issue, one side is always lopsided.

I'm going to dread working on forms/getting back into anatomy. None of the anatomy stuff seems to stick with me :/
>>
>>2672053
hey the same anon that said a long time here, those projections after my post are about accurate. its all about how much you want to work your ass off. a few hours a day of doing the right things can go a long way, just make sure you do it every day. and later into it try to do some longer stretches every week if possible (say 8 hours). you want as much milage as you can get doing the right things. but you also don't want to burn out so kinda build up to drawing longer and longer. make it a habit.
now get to it. and good luck.

Ok, this is one of the only nearly full bodies Ive done from imagination. I can recognize some of the mistakes like the Tumblr nose, the hand holding the sword and the perspective on the chestplate. I just got onto /ic/ and I know I'm in need of Loomis, but I don't know where to start, I'm not a TOTAL beginner

right hand seems unusually big, unless it's supposed to be that way
>>
>>2672265
The larger hand is closer to the actual size of a hand, proportionally. Your palm/fingers should basically fit right over your face. It's the other hand is incredibly tiny.

you're right, listen to this instead

i skipped one day a few days ago will i no longer make it?
>>
>>2672276
Draw x10 more hours today and you will.

God help you if you skip another though, then you'll never make it.,
>>
>>2672277
but there aren't forty hours in a day anon
>>
>>2672279
Then x2 for the next 5 days. That's the best you're getting.

How are those textures? I realize some of them are more patterns than textures, and I kind of lost.

Thoughts on the Art Fundamentals subreddit? Guy reviews your work, and the courses/lessons look pretty decent

It's also known as draw a box.

It's basically Peter Han's dynamic sketching on crack. It's a good starting point if you need structure.

Other than bodies, I haven't practiced much. I do realism as well but don't upload them

>>2672338

Just try it. It's not like it'll harm you. The beginning exercises will def help you with you line confidence, yours look a little hairy.
>>
>>2672339
I've started on Lesson 1! Plan on going through it all.

My line confidence is definitely a problem.. I find that when drawing, if I'm trying to do something clean my hand gets REALLY fucking heavy. Last night all I was doing was doing some inking / going over graphtie with a pen, and my hand was getting tired.

Thanks man
>>
>>2672343
That's a common problem when you grip the pen/pencil too hard. Relax your hand. Let it flow. Being too tense will only work against you.

Make sure you actually use a felt tip pen, too. There's something psychological about not being able to erase it that gets you comfortable with making accurate marks every time
>>
>>2672319
I forgot about "am" near I but whatever. Anyone got some ideas for simple textures?

I have! Was using ballpoints for a while, but I got a pack of PILOT Felt Tip pens off of Amazon, they're 0.3mm.

I got a pack of 12, but I've only been using them for the Draw A Box lessons. Would you say using them for sketching / practicing on normal stuff would be more beneficial than using a pencil? I don't erase anything with my sketches, but I do have very hairy/messy lines, as you've seen.

I try to doodle/draw at work as well when I can, doing a quick sketch of my hand or of something in front of me.

May go back and do a few more portraits, this was the last one I really gave a go... got stuck. The model was black, sweating profusely, and I honestly didn't know how to properly do the values on his skin.
>>
>>2672352
There is no "simple" or "hard" texture. It's all in your head.

Try the peels of different fruits, because you can probably pop down to the grocer and get some yourself. Orange, banana, watermelon, etc. Then you can open them and do the flesh as well, and have a snack after.
>>
>>2672354
Pencil and pen are just different mediums. Neither is better or worse. If you want to work on line quality/confidence, I would say using a felt tip pen would help immensely. You have to put the line where you want it the first time, because there are no redos.

How much did you pay for them, btw? The art store near me charges a stupid amount for their pens. Any deads in your pack?

I live in Canada so it may be cheaper for you, wherever you are

Got a 12 pack and after filling a good 5 pages full of ink (Doing the Draw A Box Lesson) the Pen doesn't seem close to drying out. Then again, I don't know how long they usually last

But I feel it was a good price
>>
>>2672364
No shit? I live in Canada too. Winnipeg.
>>
>>2672367
Oh fuck eh, huge bro. I'm by Toronto!

Yeah I'd say definitely give the pack a go, just quickly tried all the pens and none of them are dead like you asked
>>
>>2672368
Rocking. I'll keep it in mind for when mine run out. I'm used to Staedlers, but I'm sure pilot will be fine. Good luck with draw a box!

Skim through each and see which one interests you the most. I'd recommend doing each of them at some point.

looks good anon, i believe you need to work on the hands too. anatomy looks decent. As for value make sure you accentuate the darks and lights, it will make the figure pop more.
