>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

You should focus more on looking at proportions and wear each part of the head lays in retrospect to other parts of the head.
For example:
The top of his ear should be on the brow line
The mouth should be ending wear the iris of the eye starts.
The forehead should be proportional to how long his nose is in your piece. You draw his nose pretty well.

Good work. Keep working at it

>>
>>2626306
Your proportions are decent. There are a few things that the other anon mentioned.

However i think you will find that paying closer attention to value will improve your drawing; try to find what is dark.

for example instead of drawing his upper lip, since it is in shadow you should just fill it in or do some cross hatching. Look at the shapes of light and dark instead of the shapes of his features.

also places like under the eyebrow and the right side of his face under his hair ect...

drawings look more natural this way.

>>
>>2626282
Looks good, I think you widened his face a little but I like your style
>>
>>2626430
Yeah definitely ctrl paint but you might want to improve your anatomy too, the breasts look unnatural for some reason. Either too high up or defying gravity
>>
>>2626458

I am finding studying anatomy odd on a digital platform, so I do the majority of it in my sketchpad.

Bad idea? Should I start practicing on digital?
>>
>>2626306
Other anons gave you some good advice. Another obvious thing is you made your hairline symmetric, whereas the hair is supposed to be falling over the left side of his face and covering part of his forehead
>>
>>2626460
It's generally better to learn on paper imo, even if you're going to mainly use digital. Teaches you to respect every line (no crt+z), feels a bit more natural than tablet, etc etc
>>
>>2626472

I am personally finding the actual texture and friction of the lead means my pencil work is much better than my digital.
I'll do both, but with emphasis on the actually studying.

Thanks Anon.

There are some issues (thumb, pecs, hip, inside nob of the foot joint seems too low), some of which might just be exaggerations of oddities in the model, but I'd suggest to get your ass out of the beginner thread so as not to stagnate / lose momentum.
>>

Use 3d forms, not 2d shapes.
Apply proper structure to everything, not selectively.
When you place a landmark, place it correctly, and stick to it, otherwise why even bother.

Not bad, but pic related would be her skeleton. You wouldn't bother with polishing a car that has no engine, so don't bother with drawing flesh over a deformed skeleton.

Decent, but I see no signs of construction whatsoever, it looks very flat and 2D.

Had you used construction, you'd have known that there's an angle between her pelvis and ribcage, which squashes her skin on one side and stretches it on the other. Learn to draw 3D forms and apply them to your drawing.

Without looking at the ref, it looks like you squeezed his facial features vertically. his nose looks too close to his eyes, and his mouth is too close to the nose. Where are the eyebrows? The ears should also be at the eyebrow line, they're too far up in your drawing.

I like how you rendered the hair though, your lines are pretty expressive.

except that meme happens to be true.
There isn't a line around your forehead where your hair starts. There isn't a line on the bridge of your nose. There isn't a line along the bottom of your bottom lip.
Faces aren't broken up by lines, they are broken up by shadows cast by interconnected parts that form a whole.

You have confidence in the line-art, your rendering and coloring is kind of flat but pretty decent. Face is your biggest flaw, with a anatomy that could be a lot better as second.
I recommend to read these:
To make a consistent and more human like (even if your goal isn't to make the most life alike figure from imagination and make exaggerated figures to better sexy appeal, you still have to learn the basics and fundamentals to toy around with them) anatomy.

To learn to make them dynamic (since sex and poses are all about the act and action)

I like your shading and detailed texturing on the hair, but you definitely need to look up a diagram on basic facial proportions and try and work off of those. The guy on the left seems to have a rectangular rather than rounded face, everything about him is too angular. His forehead is too high up and his jaw juts out pretty unnaturally.
The guy on the right's eyes should be a little lower down on his face, and I think the bridge of his nose should start farther down.

Hope this helped.

A small frame does wonders for me trying to make an actual scene.

If I have a large canvas, it feels like a never ending quest to draw, but if I have a small one (500x1000) then it feels like I need to fill it up, and since there isn't enough room, I have to pick and choose what is shown.

This is like my second time trying a "study" thing like this. Am I even remotely in the ballpark of being able to get some criticism or recommendation on what to do in general?

I can see I made it too wide, or at least the eyes too far apart, and maybe a bit low? couldn't really figure out how to define the shape of the nose, so that falls really flat. Jawline is a bit too square. That's just the things I can see I did wrong.
>>
>>2627757
What method of construction are you using?
>>
>>2627774
uh, I just draw a circle, throw on a jaw, straight line down the middle, estimate for the eye line, separate the space below in half for the nose, and then separate the space below the nose in half again for the lips. Everything else is just going by eye. Whatever method that is. If that has a name I don't know it. probably just called the shitty method lol.
>>
>>2627787

not him but it sounds like it beats the proko method. Any time I try adding the side planes/jawlines, everything comes out cockeyed/completely asymmetrical
>>
>>2627790
Looks like how I do it is just a simplified version of the Proko method. More eyeballed rather than actually measured, as well. meaning I should probably fully take up the Proko method.

Boobs look kinda glued on, along with the top of her hair.

With the style you're going for, maybe a less detailed face would be better. And make her head a bit bigger, too.

first gouache from imagination. it sucks. what can i improve
>>
>>2628089
How is that a meme? It's a useful skillset that you can build upon. If you can copy well you know how to measure and probably have decent linework. If you copy nature it will also get you into thinking 3-dimensionally. If you copy photos, it will give you a sensibility for values and composition. If you copy stylized work it will come in handy later when you have build a good foundation, you'll understand why those artists drew a specific thing the way they did.

Copying gives you actually a much more useful skillset to begin with than drawing from imagination.

So, I ask you, how is it a meme?

I really like the colors, but that's not how water works. It looks like its lying on the water instead of swimming in it or being underwater. For the latter you'd have to shit its colors to a cooler tone.

Is gouache fun to paint with?
>>
>>2628124
thats. yeah that color block on the bottom was a fuck up. it actually looked better before but i was experimenting and sort of put to much of the color down. it looked more natural before i goofed. ill play around and tone the colors like you said. thanks for the tips

yes. i started with pencil/paper and went digital and didnt even touch traditional for 1.5 years and i missed the feel of actually having something tangible. also i noticed i can sit down and focus a lot better and plow through more since i have to take the time to set up/take down and im away from the pc so no distractions. i got all my supplies for less than $60 i think of amazon, holbien 12 color set, some 12 brush set and a 12 page watercolor sketchbook.

Yes by studying the skull
>>

by understanding how it moves. try finding a shaft thats about 5-10 inches long and 5-6 inches in circumference. insert in your mouth repeated using a bobbing motion. try using different amounts of suction and use the tongue a lot as its also an important muscle of the mouth. avoid using your teeth and youre also allowed a two second break to stroke the shaft with your hand to spread lube and give your mouth a break from the study session

1). I have Figure Drawing For All It's Worth. Should I just start with that book of his? Or should I try another?(I've asked this question before but never got a good answer.

2). How would you rate my lines? Are they too scratchy?

Do a rendering book on whatever tools you are using to draw. Pick your poison:

> ia802708.us.archive.org/25/items/sketchingrenderi00guptuoft/sketchingrenderi00guptuoft.pdf [pen]

If you use other tools, just search them here: vkDOTcomSLASHtopic-4918594_27696136

It will give confidence to your strokes since you know what the fuck are you doing + grinding for muscle memory
>>
>>2628235
a big part of it is that you're doing the scritchy-scratch going over a line multiple times in order to sort of fool your eye into accepting a multitude of separate lines as a single 'line'

what you should try to do instead is to make your lines in a single motion from your arm rather than drawing with your fingers (or at least, that's what I'm guessing you're doing). you can get the sort of confidence and reliability you need by going back to basics and doing varied ellipses and other shapes over and over again. it's less fun but no less necessary

>>2628400
Please take all this with a few grains of salt, but I reckon you picked a much too difficult image - beards are a fucking nightmare! Especially since they partially obfuscate the structure of the face. You're focusing too much on minor details (like those erroneous strands of hair and wrinkles) without considering the overall proportion and the planes of the face. Try rendering some simpler objects like cubes, fruits, whatever - it'll help you get a grasp on defining planes based on how they reflect light. Also practice using construction methods to get your facial proportions more accurate (loomis, proko, whatever, pick your poison.)

I don't mean to say it's awful or anything, pretty decent for your second study desu, just overambitious. Keep trucking and try drawing it again in a few weeks - I bet you will be amazed at the improvement!

Try reading Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing before copying. Your problem lies in that you cannot accurately copy what you see. Not to mention your lines are hairy and your drawing is cut off by the page.

So... I've never been able to draw besides stickmen and shitty stuff, yesterday I just grabbed a pencil, googled "how to draw a face", and said "fuck it" when I saw all the steps and things to follow, schemes, techniques, etc.
I'm 23 y.o. with absolutely no art background and I've never liked it since it has always been difficult to translate mind images to paper images. I'm techy and pragmatic.

So I just laid graphite on a piece paper.

Feels weird and kinda scary sharing my very first "serious" graphite glob.

Considerations and maybe tips?

Try squinting and look at a whole image instead of details. Whites - are highlights, greys - halftones, blacks - shadows. Strictly divide picture in these and try drawing again without using the lines at all (or make them almost transparent). Dont be afraid to put much more tone.

There is no better. Digital instruments are great. They make drawing much easier. But I advice to stick with paper for now. Learning without undo, layers etc will give you confinence with your linework as you will rely on thinking and knowing what you doing instead of redoing random lines until it looks good.

seeing a lot of cartoony drawings make me think the artist avoided construction and eyeballed it all with general knowledge of proportion. seems to be the case the further you go from reality.
>>
>>2629337
That's the idea of most cartoons - make it simple enough to not have to waste time constructing but appealing and realistic enough.

Also artists like that have been doing art for years.

you straightened her pose. The ref is not dead on but from below. Build the perspective box of the head before detailing to avoid this mistake

do you have to do construction for portraits from pictures or can you just start rendering
>>
>>2629403

Yes, if you don't want it to be a godawful mess.
>>
>>2628491

You don't really get worse, you just become aware through experience drawing, of how bad you actually are. It's a sign of progress.

Also, sometimes you just have bad days where nothing works and everything is terrible.

Literally any fucking image of the human body you could do a study of. It'll help you out so much more than going about this cartoon shit (for example, learning how the SCM muscle connects to the ear and the length down the neck). It is necessary to do 'fun' works to keep yourself sane but you can't have it be your only thing. A 50:50 balance is always good.

I'll keep that in mind, but I'm not a fan of big lats. I rarely ever buff my figures this much either. Found one recent where I did, but I exaggerated more here I think. Or maybe this is closer to what buff dudes look like, torso-waist ratio wise. Both are probably within reason imo.
>>
>>2629075
I already watched most of the videos and I'm trying to apply what I learned there.

I want something that is medium specific like I had in traditional media, I have books that are specific about techniques in watercolor or pencils that don't waste time talking about fundamentals.
Digital painting is hard due the lack of metarials like that. everything is too basic or not comprehensive enough.

shading "done". I have been working on it way too long, but I guess this is the first attempt that I am not completely disgusted with
>>
>>2629621
There's not much of a range there in your shading, it looks pretty flat since you're just using two main values. Also if you're drawing from ref you might want to block out the rest of the forms first instead of just shading the face.
>>
>>2629631
it's not from ref. I don't really know what to do
>>
I'm about ready to give up on this :/
>>
Don't mind the stray brush spot near the arm ^
>>
>>2629640
Ah, you still definitely want to start with blocking out main shapes then. The idea is to go from bigger shapes to smaller shapes and then render and get more detailed from there, kinda like building a house I guess. You want to put down your foundational support first and pick bathroom tiles at the very end.

Hope this makes sense.
>>
Can someone recommend some good books for inspiration and some entry level advice books please?

darker darks and brighter brights, his left arm's thin, and his head's a little tiny so he looks like he's 8 feet tall

>>2628303
dunno if you're still waiting for response from me, but lift your wrist from the page and don't rest it on anything. make motions with your arm for things like gesture and sketching. motions from the elbow are suited for very little, but make an okay bridge between arm and finger drawing. finger drawing is for details only, and when you do rest your hand on the page keep a sheet of paper between your palm/wrist and your work to avoid smearing.

it will be awful at first, a little like drawing with your non-dominant. it's very similar because you're using untrained muscles and have no muscle memory for the shapes and strokes you're used to making. start with boxes and ellipses/spheres, and whatever other exercise you can.
>>
>>2629664
there's a sticky for this. the gist of most of the books in the sticky are 'fundamentals, fundamental, fundamentals,' though, so as long as you have

>sufficient observatory ability to distinguish the reality past the shortcutting your brain gives you
>the ability to translate lines from mind's eye to paper and the hand-eye coordination or muscle memory to do so consistently
>ability to break shapes down into simpler ones
>understanding of construction to build simple shapes into more complex ones
>knowledge of perspective
>knowledge of anatomy

in approximately that order, you'll do fine. there are lots of resources for all of these, but you have to practice day in day out if you want to draw like whatever professional has pulled you into this bout of motivation.

You need to deconstruct objects from life to construct on paper.

You need to read fun with a pencil, but if you don't understand it, go do draw a box.

http://drawabox.com/

Once you go through draw a box, draw from life and simplify objects into basic shapes. (Cylinders, cubes, spheres, etc)

When that is down, construct a drawing out of cubes, spheres, etc on paper. You're very far from 3D, so you will need to do a lot of life drawing.
>>
>>2629893
I assume anon is referring to your chicken scratch cowardly lines.
>>
>>2629901

That's not what rendering means in the general context of art (outside of 3d modeling). Rendering is drawing in texture and detail as opposed to just a line drawing.

I think the ears angle outward a bit more and you should show the space between the lips. The shadow underneath the lips towards the left side of his face should also be darkened. I like this though.
>>
>>2629271
Can't crit since these are way better than my no-ref. Nice work.
>>
>>2629818
I usually start with a pretty big brush and just outline shapes, then I shade main values with that brush in the same color. Then I add a Color layer on Photoshop, go over the monotone piece with colors, and then I keep working from there.

^ Hope this makes sense anon
