Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

So I'll ask it here because it's mostly about fundamentals. I haven't drawn seriously in about a year and a half since my anatomical drawing class ended. Mostly just little anime doodles. I'm struggling a lot with constructing with forms and perspective (I'm just gonna grab a pdf and practice the second one. I have an idea what to do there), since it was never really taught to me formally.

I understand the idea of building things with 3D shapes but nothing actually looks good when I do that. It's incredibly hit and miss, and it's frustrating the hell out of me.

The solution is pretty much just grind it out right? I'm going to have to get back on the wagon with actually drawing figures and trying to deconstruct them? I feel like I need to focus on correcting what I didn't learn so I can actually enjoy drawing again.

>The solution is pretty much just grind it out right?
Pretty much. You start simple and gradually begin using more complex shapes, doing figure and anatomy studies in between to see how well it's sinking in and to apply what you're learning. This is why Hogarth is recommended after you start getting the hang of things, because the anatomy in the book is so exaggerated it's easier to grasp.

I don't know if you have or not yet, but you should grind out some knowlege on the bones first and then instead of learning how to draw the body by memorizing what it looks like, memorize how it is put together. ie: Once you know the proportions of the ribcage and arm bones, study where the pectorals attach and insert. Same with the biceps and the triceps. Honestly if you spend even just a few hours looking at the body from this very technical perspective you'll learn SO MUCH that will hugely enhance your drawing when you go back to doing what you're doing with these. Because your problem with these pictures is that you don't have a clear enough understanding of why the muscles look the way they do. You know there's a bulge "somewhere around here" but you don't know exactly why it's there letalone specifically where it is.

Study bones. I say this to everyone because it's so true. The bones are more important to the human form than the muscles are. The muscles are dependant on the bones and where the bones protrude, not the other way around.

I was forced to buy this book for an anatomy class, and it's a good book if you can find it, he breaks this stuff down very well. Or just get one of those anatomy apps for your ipad or something, or just fuckin' google some skeletons. Spend a good while drawing the bones and you'll improve much faster.

This is ok, and not really worth pointing out because you'll just have to power through it to get it right, but here's a good tutorial that will help simplify the coloring process and separate it into categories of how light interacts with stuff.
http://ukitakumuki.deviantart.com/art/SONS-OF-ORION-Process-x-Tutorial-522857505

And a pro tip that will help you focus on the colors and not have to worry about coloring outside the lines and messing things up, Instead of trying to describe it to you, just look at this tutorial: http://themichaelmacrae.deviantart.com/art/Wolf-Steps-541924102

>>
>>2608560
>>2608561
your next step is to payattention to your mark-making. Your structural instincts are good but your lack of attention to detail makes these too messy to shine.
>>
>>2608565
mark making? Should I still try to copy photos? I feel like this is a waste of time, since i'm just learning to copy a photo, which doesn't reflect much talent, just skill.
>>
>>2608562
Pick up Hampton and see if you get better responses.
>>
>>2608511
As Anon said, post work. Expect a bunch of "needs more Loomis, yadda, yadda, but you will get some genuine responses. As for the jaw line, the mandible attaches at the lower middle of the "cut" of the sphere of the skull, not AT the cut like many newbies think. The jaw goes down for a bit before moving forward and inward until the chin.

Symbol drawing is a generic term - EVERYONE symbol draws, it's just that our symbols are more complex. Stop worrying too much about symbol drawing and worry more about analyzing and choosing the correct way to represent the form.
>>
>>2608567
So all these study threads are all wasteful, right? Don't ever copy a photo. Study it, analyze it, see why things are the way they are. It might be a little more intensive on yourself but it helps in the long run.

You still did better than most in terms of alignment and form. You seem to forget to check measurements and proportions. For instance, you didn't compare the endings of her mouth in relation to her eyes, nor measure that her mouth is roughly one eye height from her nose. Or that her eyes are around 3/4 of an eye apart. You also made her eye seem to bulge forth from her socket.

Sit and analyze where you fucked up and redraw. Sustain what you do well and improve what you suck at.

I guess this just hits the valley of "not bad enough to comment on, but not good enough to either" . Sometimes no response is the most telling, because it means your work is uninteresting and needs that extra attention grab, something to make the viewer go wow and then they need to comment on it. I would push the values, just as you though, and also add more contrast for depth . Aim for a misty atmosphere.

You take the color of light and the surroundings into account. Light hitting a big, green wall is going to bounce off as green light and illuminate what's around it green - EVEN IF THERE IS A SHADOW. If it's not perfectly black, some light is reaching that area. So if you have this green light illuminating something blue, the shadow is going to be a desaturated, darker teal, but still close to the blue spectrum.

It takes time and study, but you'll get it.

>>
>>2608756

Looks like you're already getting better. Remember to keep measuring. It may be better to make the vertical line first for the center of the face, then the horizontal for the eyes, measure the eyes from the center (while keeping nose in mind), measuring the nose's end relative to your cranial sphere, put little dots for the end of the nostrils, tip of the nose. Then measure the distance from the tip of the nose to the top of the lip and put a little dot. After this, relative to the eyes, find the end of the mouth (mid-eye, start of eyes).

For instance, this model actually has around the "golden rule" of 1 eye spacing between the eyes. The nose goes down around 3 eye heights, and at the second eye height, she had previously broken her nose. From her septum, it's approximately one eye height to her mouth. Her mouth is as wide as the insides of her eyes (can be tricky, have to imagine the contours around the cheeks). Her chin is as wide as her mouth.

Your goal is really to measure and relate as much as possible, which is what will make this the most accurate. If you measure properly, the portrait will be identifiable and easier to render. And even if you botch the rendering, the portrait will still be identifiable.

I'm a musician as well, and I find that drawing and music compliment each other very well. I especially like the fact that I can listen to music whilst being creative, which is simply impossible when music is your sole creative outlet.
You just have to give yourself time to do both. If you're already making music it's a bit easier since you can focus more on learning to draw, as your musical "fundamentals" are already solidly in place, but learning a DAW while also learning to draw seems to me like it would be a bit difficult if you want to see real progress somewhat quickly. Better to focus on one thing at a time for now, at least until you have the fundamentals down.
>>
>>2609171
yeah, I'd like to dedicate at least 2 hrs everyday for drawing (fundamentals and stuff) and just spend the rest of my free time making music.

Wordfilter.

Figured as much, it's obvious you've yet to gain any kind of deeper understanding. Not hating, we all got to start somewhere, but you need to hit the books/sticky/loomis/etc before you can ask for serious help. The kind of tips and pointers we're going to give you is regurgitating anything you can find in any decent drawing resource, so it becomes a complete waste of time.
>>
>>2609176

>>
>>2609196
I have no idea. But if I suggest anything I'd say do NOT ignore perspective. It's something I put off for years and hindered my improvement to a crawl. It is incredibly important in seeing and understanding the world around us. There are many subtleties that can be missed by not honing your understanding, like in the slight foreshortening that the girl's arms should have had in your picture.

Anatomy is important as well for figure drawing, and I do mean ALL the bones and muscles. Bones are the basic shape and scaffolding for everything the body as well as giving it hardness where it's needed, the muscles define the shape and give your figure a great soft/firm aesthetic, even when someone has gained considerable weight you can often find the larger of the muscle groups. Gaining an intimate knowledge of the body will let you learn more rapidly with figure drawing studies, give you more ways to doublecheck your work, and speed up the process of figure drawing by doing less secondguessing.

These are just two aspects of the fundamentals, and focusing on just figure drawing alone like many will leave you wanting when it comes to creating more than just pretty naked anime girls. It may sound like a lot when you get serious enough to realize how much there is truly is you have to learn, but just keep working hour after hour, day after day, year after year if you plan on making it.
>>
>>2609226

You're going to be gripping fuck all if your hand is resting on top of your calf. Draw the hand lower, resting in front of the thigh instead of on top, with the fingers splayed out and contracted. Then draw the skin like a bunch of u's, showing the fat bulging out between the fingers.
>>
>>2609844
Let him render if he wants to. You need to start blending values together. Instead of just having stripes of increasingly light values.

You can never do enough figure studies.
It can be too much, though, so when you notice that you're getting sloppy, try to push through for a bit (that's a mental skill you learn with practice, just like keeping proper anatomy and seeing straight) and if you just can't, go do something else.

I have the pdf open. I'd just appreciate direct feedback, as my self criticism can be surmised in its entirely as 'it sucks'

Can someone share their pen pressure settings for Intuous with the pressure curve tool? I'm having a lot of trouble getting a good gradient between thick and thin lines, and I feel the pressure setting are partly to blame.

blind people on ic again!?

seriously how can you not spot the difference? hell just use fucking colour picker to spot the difference in light fuck.
>>
>>2610087
if youre just start loomis youre in no place to try stuff from imagination. you need to learn to construct heads, then learn to construct them well, then start practice portraits from references, practice portraits that actually capture the likeness and im not sure where the fuck to go from then because im at the point where i can draw a face from reference very well very quickly but i havent really tried doing from imagination yet

did this the other day

Ty for suggestions!

How do you practice not looking at your hand? It just turns into retard scribbles if I try to focus mostly on my subject

>>2610279
keep scribbling until you are more comfortable.
You don't need to never look at your paper, though. Just do it less than how much you observe your subject.

Note that at a certain point where the main shapes and areas for shadow and light have been established looking at your subject intently isn't always as necessary for building the image, but it's good to double check before you "finalize" as to pick up more on mistakes and such.

Pic related is a really bad Stardust the Superwizard. His preportions are supposed to be really off compared to his head.

Eyes aren't bad, but they're looking in different directions. The shape of the face is way off--put more time into drawing or refining the overall shapes before committing to rendering. Measure, measure, measure.
Your edges are sharp, but look segmented like you shared them by cutting bits off with a hard eraser tool. They would be better if they were a bit softer and more cohesive. I know you proudly use a bristle brush for the hair, but it looks like you tried to draw every hair individually, which never looks right. I'm not great with values, so I'll let someone else talk to you about those.

How do I get over my shitty standards?

It doesn't let me practice because as soon as I start drawing I'm starting to think "man this looks like shit" and I just drop it.
>>
>>2610415
As a beginner, focus on getting better than you were last month instead of trying to judge yourself against pros. It's a fairly simple way to think of things without overanalyzing and it gets you on a good track.
>>
>>2610365
You aren't drawing what you're seeing.
>>
>>2610382
yes!! not perfect but very cute, good proportions, v nice job on the hands and feet, i like the shapes outside of the figure. maybe work on hair n face and the details/forms of the knees and lower legs, but i think if this is your average work you can safely leave the beginner threads

The features look flat and "stuck" on tot he face. You need to learn the muscles underneath so it all works together. Try also focusing on a feature and drawing it a hundred times.

Yeah I found & downloaded it. I guess that's all I get on /ic/. Just to be safe I also looked through the /3/ and it's mostly 3d modeling and rigging. I like Anatomy for sculptors, but it doesn't give any info on tool and material use, texturing, armatures, etc. I'm not above googling but I'd like some more "artist tested" resources.

anyone got tips for a newbie? rn i'm just trying out everything i think looks cool at the same time haha
>>
>>2610540
Usually they're supposed to look a little retarded because poses should be exaggerated.

In your case, you would benefit from learning a little bit of proportions in terms of body parts and later on starting anatomy.
>>
>>2610540
why is he wearing a hat and has boxcutter nipples
>>
>>2610551
>you would benefit from learning a little bit of proportions in terms of body parts and later on starting anatomy
so when you draw your first squiggly line you are suppose to already have in mind the proportions? I though the point was making a human from the random line, like thats the challenge
>>
>>2610559
If by squiggly line, you mean the line of action (which you shouldn't identify as random), no. You should -always- have correct proportions in mind when you're drawing. The only challenge in gesture drawing is to describe the story of a figure with minimal lines.

new random original freestyle quick sketches, sketchbook pro

last time im posting in this thread, i think i should move on to the normal art threads or sketch threads i guess

maybe im better than i though i was lol
>>
I wanna git gud, I really do. If there is one piece of advice that would help me at all it's what kind of study pattern I should be following. What does everybody study and for how long? I started Keys to Drawing but haven't been feeling much confidence, should I start it over and do each exercise over and over until something clicks with each one? I understand that it's mostly all grinding, and I'm okay with that, but I guess I'm just looking for a wee bit of guidance in any aspect
