Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make your mom proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (also images shouldn't come out accidentally sideways with this method)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

alright man time for some real critiques working from the top down.
your ear(s)? aren't properly lines up with the facial features and you dont have a proper perspective on the under side of the forehead for that face angle. the lines on the neck arent anatomically correct look up how the veins in your neck work as well as the connection to the shoulders. your hands are wonky af dont ignore hands just keep on working at them they are a challenge for a lot of artists but if you ignore them youll never git gud. breasts are uneven. your right kneecap isnt in place properly feet are meh but them ankles need help.
pose isnt horrible but your losing the base gesture of the figure with the weapons which confuse the overall piece. peace.

when your laying out your initial values dont be afraid to hit those edges hard you can clearly see that you added the shadows in after the egg and the pot were done because theres that gap of white between the two surfaces donrt be afraid to just draw straight into the pot then draw over the shadow although it seems like a pain itll keep the brush strokes looking solid and save you work overall.
when your making the form of rounded objects keep your brush stokes going in the same direction as the form of the object your painting

Loomis teaching feels weird to me, hence why I don't know why everyone keeps recommending him to me. I just don't know how to navigate through the book.
>>
>>2603920
You're right anon, loomis is being meme'd at you. You do not need loomis. You are basically at square 0. You need to practice lines and circles and then basic forms such as cubes and spheres. Faces are a bit too much for you right now and it really shows. Slow down and start with the basic stuff. You don't need to master them but you do need to get some form of understanding.
If you want to read a book, keys to drawing is a better starting point.

You may feel that this is not a specific critique on your specific drawing but it's hard to critique the superficial elements of your basic drawing when the very foundation is missing.

The biggest and most jarring flaw is your complete and utter lack of confidence with line. You have scribbled around the same circle maybe 50 times. Perhaps there is one in there that is close to correct, but all it tells me is that you do not know how to draw a circle.
>>

>But like I said feel free to post your art fuckwad. By all means!

you have suffered enough for now lets get you some real help. for starters although the guy above may be an asshole he is right at the moment you are symbol drawing rather than creating forms and understanding the meaning behind the placement of the symbols you wish to use. stand by for a second and i will help you get a little bit more on track for what you want to do (with pictures)
>>
>>2603932
>keys to drawing
That's a pretty boring book.

I get what you're saying but I have every right to be angry if you guys are memeing me if Im asking for critique. It shouldn't have taken me this long to have gotten it.

And the scribbles is obviously me starting out the picture and it being a sketch that sets the tone for the final piece. You're no better than these other memers.
>>
>>2603937

man ur a hothead

just draw my dude and stop bitching
>>
>>2603940
>And the scribbles is obviously me starting out the picture and it being a sketch that sets the tone for the final piece.

You're making a lot of assumptions here, friend.

If you were competent at what you were doing, your "sketch that sets the tone" would not look like that. Not even remotely.

I know that being a complete beginner you have no idea what real advice that is helpful or unhelpful is, so don't take my word for it.

Go through the first few pages of "Scott Robertson's How to Draw" book and it will perhaps bring to light my suggestion in a more clear way.

Pair up the beginning exercises in there with some from KTD and you will make progress.
>>
>>2603920
If you cant copy from a book you dont need critique. You need to draw more, you need to practice lines, circles, cubes etc.

You are being memed at because you are at such a beginner level its difficult to provide anything useful other than "draw more" - "pick a book, study it, copy it, do the exercises" etc.

Get over yourself, what you posted was given the level of crit it deserved by several anons (myself included)

Or
>Go to a library and use a computer there
Or
>Get a job and buy your own computer
Or
>Check out books from a library
Or
>Print out pages a bit at a time after downloading
Or
>Spend a little time on the comp doing stuff instead of "All day"
Or
>Use your phone to store the books and look at them
Or
>Give up cause life is too hard
Or
>Pay money to have someone hold your hand and teach you every step
Or
>Set up still lifes in your home and start with those, when you get good at them you'll be able to do many more things

The list goes on and on and on

It's just hard really because I have Figure Drawing for all its worth but Im not understanding it. And I cant try to get any other books off of here because I have to deal with my mom wondering Im on here all the time.

So yeah long story short, I wont come here for a while until Ive made some progress.
>>
>>2604060

>>
>>2604060
Don't. Get an actual job and do art on the side. You'll be able to express yourself instead of being a wagecuck obeying orders when it comes to your art.
>>
>>2604060
You should let inking and coloring rest until later. It's hard to give "tips" since the face you drew is completely fucked to begin with. Like take a look at the face you drew, you completely ignored the middle line so his face is totally misplaced. And that's barely the start of it

You need to start from the very basics and figure out how to draw the basic 3d shapes in perspective. Forget faces and stuff until later, trust me. Drawing anime dudes is fun but if you want to chase your dream seriously don't put the cart before the horse!

Also you must be 18 to post on 4chan.
>>
>>2604088
I get what you mean. Imma just try that. Ill practice then. Could I post studies in these threads?

Also is Andrew Loomis as good as everyone is saying he is? Because like I said earlier I'm not getting the hype
>>
>>2604095
Yes you can 100% post studies in this thread. If you don't like Loomis get Hampton or Villpu or anyone else really. Loomis is easy to get your hands on because he's dead and you aren't harming him by not buying his stuff. While he is a bit of a meme his stuff is generally easy to understand and it will work. If you are having trouble understanding Loomis you should probably start with something simpler.
>>
>>2604095
Of course you can post studies here, this is the beginner thread

Loomis is good but some of his books are arguably intermediate level and some think that he expects a lot from the reader. He's got another book called Fun With A Pencil that's more aimed at noobs than Figure Drawing For All It's Worth.

What I think you need to focus hard on as a noob is LINE QUALITY and the basic 3d forms: Sphere, Pyramid, Cone, Cube. Drawing real life objects such as cardboard boxes, buildings, bottles, cans, balls and apples can be done if you feel like it. They resemble the basic shapes.

When you've done some work and actually come to understand the gist of these instructions, this video should make some sense:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uEtdDvK6Xo
This video isn't the beginning and the end, of course. There are tons of videos and books that go over this.

Before you start dissecting objects with your eyes, is it best to understand how a standard ellipse moves and grooves in 3D space? How it wraps around an object?

The bounding box for the fairy seems like it grows more narrow towards the top, which is the opposite of what you want.
Top tip: when you draw a rectangle,if you draw two straight line connecting the opposite corners, the place they meet is the center even in perspective.
Try using a more precise brush when you're constructing things. A thin one with no pressure sensitivity will let you actually see where you're putting your lines.

I'm no pro, but I've done enough of these studies to see how you're screwing up.

Your ellipses don't twist in 3D space.
They abruptly cut-off. It's a symbol. If you look more closely at the edges of the paper/wrapper you'll see that it wraps around the object like a circle. You've drawn a semi circle when you should be drawing a full one.

You need to be deconstructing objects into basic cylinders.

I think you might need to spend more time looking at what you're drawing. You should be looking more at the object than your paper.
>>
>>2604979
Thanks for your advice! As the exercise was supposed to be about enrichment shapes I was mostly focused on the glass part so I guess I overlooked the rest. I'll definitely think about it next time I draw a cylindrical object.
>>
>>2604819
Also, you should spend some time drawing ellipses on objects at various heights from life before you de-construct objects. It'll stop you from wasting a lot of time.

Don't forget to see through the form on top of this.

This would look really good if the entire glass was more symmetrical. You exaggerated the slight tilt in the bottom too much (the bottom right is too tilted, same with the bottom left). The top of the whole thing should also be a flatter line. Indentations in the glass should be straighter lines and not as curved.

Removing details without destroying the whole, I guess?

It's just that I immediately get the impression that the anatomy is wrong or simplified in a bad way. It hardly looks like a simplified human but more like some nightmarish simian. The lines indicating collarbones and biceps look like an afterthought, the connection between torso and arms is thin and weird, he doesn't have latissimus dorsi, his crotch is super wide etc

In case you haven't actually studied the anatomy of the whole human body, you should, and then try drawing him again. It'll probably look lots better

Hey guys. I'm new to all this and had a couple questions that I'm sure you've answered a few times now.

I'd like to just jump right in, so I went to the sticky website and got a copy of the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". In it they have a materials list

How important is that materials list? Will I continue to improve without them? I have pens and mechanical pencils and regular printer paper. Is that enough?

I also have a tablet, but I've been lead to believe that learning to draw traditionally is better than learning to draw digitally. Is that true?

According to the book and the closest examples to my level of work, I'm currently drawing at a 7-year old's level of drawing.
>>
>>2605884
Also I should note that I do plan on getting the materials, I just want to get going as soon as possible
>>
>>2605884
At this stage, no, materials arent important besides using something that youre comfortable with. Printer paper + pencil is fine.

Drawing traditionally before drawing digitally generally helps you in the long run by making it harder to develop bad habits like using ctrl + z over and over until you get the line you want.

Have fun, anon.
>>
>>2605752

I'll help you on your next set. Just try to get more singular lines when building the body and building out of cylinders.

Ok, I want to learn how to draw because I have many ideas in my head that I want to put on paper in order to further develop and formulate them. I feel that drawing is kinda like a language and I want to be able to use that language in any way possible. My problem is that these drawings I do come out so bad and never fully illustrate what I want them to and confuse others when I show them.

I know you must practice doing it more but I want to know about all the most intuitive tools that exist for beginners who've maybe drawn only one real picture in grade school. I want to know about many tools because I am a bit slower than most people and would like to find the best option for me to learn.

I am very inspired by product design.

Went over my lines with a thicker, darker pencil so it would show better and i think I've ruined it

All the lines have the same weight making it harder to tell which are closer to the viewer.

So I was practicing a lot of gestures, basic anatomy (7 and 1/2 heads for body, etc), robo bean, and all that stuff. I'm nowhere near acceptable, but I feel like I need, for the change of pace and to advance to try to go for more detailed stuff, for example faces.

How should I aproach it? As all I know is outlines and basic shapes to construct the body from.
Should I first try to copy photos, or should I go study the head structure and then the structure of each individual part of the face from the materials often reposted? Or should I continue with something completely different? I have a minor grasp on how hand and feet structure work and I can draw that with a good amount of detail compared to my standart.

Also at the moment the only tool at my disposal is a 0,7mm black liner and even though I don't think it matters that much, can that hold me back? Can I practice everything with it, or is it a no-no for certain things? Thanks!

Hellou and grettings.
Im actually studying on my own the head and the facial features from an Andrew looomis book, and its very helpulf, but what he doesn’t mention is the location of the eye ball, im having hard times locating the position of the eyes in the face (the base of the circles), and i was copy tracing photos to understand more WHERE to draw the circle of the eyeball but im deseperated, because i dont like the results.

about ~2 hours into this study. any glaring issues before i start blocking in values?

You need to focus more on how much pressure you're applying to the pencil. You have real trouble going from mid grey to white.
>>
>>2606097
Instead of trying to create an abstract creature think of the environment it's in. So for example a bird. How long are it's wings compared to the length of it's body, what does it need to fly, why does it have a beak etc. Then you can start to exaggerate and manipulate these forms instead of creating Dr Frankenstein's monster by sewing parts together.
>>
>>2606891
The most glaring error is taking two hours on a gesture drawing.
>>
>>2606518
I'm not sure how to explain this or even if it's right but here goes. You're trying to outline things that shouldn't be outlined. So for example his eyebrows, you drew smooth lines around his entire eyebrow. But in the reference it shows his individual hairs and a difference in texture (smooth skin compared to coarse hair).
Also you put a line under his eye instead of shading, and the same on his neck under the jaw. Basically you turned him into a cartoon.
>>
>>2606969
Gesture drawings don't have that level of detail. I think this is just the construction before he goes over the lines again for the final form. Looks good OP.

How long does it usually take you all to try to draw from these references? It's been about an hour for me and I'm beginning to get really discouraged. I've gotten nowhere.

welcome to the club. but really just give yourself an hour. your skills arent there so just do one hour every day on top of studies later on you will achieve more progress in an hours then you did before...but you knew that..we all knew that.

Can anyone give me advice or redirect me to any references to help me learn good techniques for depth/lighting? It's one of the biggest things I want to improve atm since a lot of my drawings end up flat or awkward.

Should I just keep don't still life studies?

Is 15 a good number of thumbnails to present to a client? should I do more? or is it too much? could it be that the client won't like a single one?

Sorry, but it's literally my first time, and I somehow hit something (relatively) big so I better not fuck up. I don't think performing well when I lose my virginity will worry me as much as performing well right now.
>>
>>2607116
In general terms what are you trying to present? 15 sounds way too much.
>>
>>2607130
I have a vague instruction of what the person wants (vague as in "I thought it could be something like, maybe...", just a certain mood and situation for the characters to interact in a non-specified way, only specific things are the designs). I'm presentig the options, the diffferent compositions for the piece that's also involving different situations.
>>
>>2607149
Your client sounds like he has trouble making a decision or getting his point across. In these cases you don't want to overwhelm him so just go with 7.

Also look up 'close ended questions' and 'open ended questions'. Learn when to ask close ended questions to get specific information.
>>
>>2607169
Wew, now I have to decide on which half of them to show him. Alright.
