Is it the worst case of artist sameface ever, or are the nymphs all supposed to look identical for dat spooky supernatural vibe?

>it gives them a classical greek appearance to me

That's because you don't know anything about classical Greece. Only a fraction of the statues has a "manface".

Waterhouse can't help but paint a retard-jaw half of the time. He had an infantile obsession with Anglo mythology and was probably a racist too.

When it comes to painting women, Bouguereau is the way to go.

Fuck Anglos.

19th century romanticism and sublime landscapes are as fedora as tastes in art go, right up there with futurism. it's the pseudo-intellectualism that makes it fedora, not just atheism

there is a reason landscape paintings were considered some of the lowest forms of art in the academies from the 17th century on, and there's a reason why they became popular when allowing literal plebs to view art became a thing in the late 18th, early 19th centuries.

I like things that have been created from scratch to mirror a real life event so detailed that you start to question whether or not that is a photo or a painting and I want it to be painted before the camera was invented. So yes, I'd take a boat pic over shit and sticks.

Besides "boat pics" I also like "statues" which have been crafted in such detail that it'd rake you several years to replicate. Things that make you wonder how they were done, with such perfect mathematical and aesthetic prediction that makes it objectively beautiful on a universal scale.

Art should mirror perfection. That is talent, drawing a bunch of sticks, shitting paint or building retarded things in clay because it represents a "style" is not even near to what I like or what should be regarded as talent.

art is a proxy of human thought.

Unlike science or craft art is not bound by method but by instinct. Illustrative work had its value DESPITE its admirable craftsmanship.

Its all about context, and right now representation has nothing to offer anymore. Its redefinition may be more important than its repetition.

I love those "boat pics" too but to assert that they represent perfection or any other metaphysical notion is naive.

If you do care about innovation you must accept its awkward undeveloped stage too, the final product very rarely stays relevant.

There's too much pressure on researchers nowadays. An unsuccesful study is seen as a career setback and only breakthroughs are trully rewarded and idealized. What we get is constant breakthroughs that turn out to be too optimistic.

Perfection is a setback to progress.

>Life is all about change, if you care about control so much why not buy some model trains and build yourself a world that doesnt change.
Life is about perservation, we all change but not by that much. As humans we are more conservative than progressive as evident by our slow technological developement, our incapacity to think before feeling, our unability to change behavioral patterns and our predictable solutions to our common problems.

>But dont propose your fantasies as legitimate representations of reality.
That's a very authoritarian statement. Do you say this to scientists and religious people aswell? Are you afraid of my fantasies? Are they dangerous to your fantasies, convictions and thoughts?
>>
>>1571457

All i did was give you the context of modern art. I have no personal feelings towards either.

You for some reason really idealise romanticism. That's great, its a great school but has nothing to do with modern art.

What would be even more perilous would be to compare the two. --Or press one against the other--. Juvenile even.

And I gave you the context of romanticism (to a lesser extent).

But my original response was to a question and the subject matter was not "modern art" it was simply what constitutes Art and how Art can be separated into Illustrations and Art when it is a subjective term that is interchangeable throughout time (as you explained). And "modern art" isn't all that is to the concept of "art" which constitutes everything from The Pietà to Pic Related.

You can't compare them, no. Because one of them belongs in some sort of historical context while the other is about a subjective approach to reality and so forth. I (that's Me <- Not the world) just happen to like romanticism, you're free to disagree but I can't give two shits about what you think I should propose.

I'll allow modern artist propose this: https://youtu.be/WyL5ABXltW8 for example, it is their right. Regardless of what I feel about it.
