If you want help:
>Assemble parts list

>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>A10 9700 - poverty-tier builds (no dGPU)
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor
Fuck miners

Compared to 1700, it's more expensive, doesn't come with a cooler and they OC the same. 1800x is higher binned 1700 but in practice they're the same chip and has no reason to exist.

starting a new build. Already have CPU, Mobo, and SSD as shown in the list.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Wfw2d6

I don't give a shit about gaming, so I just need a GPU that can run up to 3 monitors. I noticed most low-end cards only have 1 or 2 HDMI/DP outs, do any cards below $150 have up to 3 HDMI/DP?

There shouldn't be anything wrong with the rest of it, case and PSU are placeholders for the kind of budget I'm going for the rest of it, as with the GPU I want to keep the rest under $400.
>>
>>62216899

Is it worth it to buy a small 50ish$ SSD for a budget build or should I just get a HDD and then buy a decent SSD?

Any recommendations on budget SSDs?
>>
>>62217359
>do any cards below $150 have up to 3 HDMI/DP?
Nope. 2 is max from what I've seen.
Either buy a used high end card from a couple of gens back

Fuck me a new thread came up while I was writing this post down.

Hey, /pcbg/, please help me with my new build. My current one broke so I'm salvaging what I can from it.

CPU: Ryzen 1600
Motherboard: MSI Tomahawk Arctic (can't seem to get vanilla Tomahawk, please suggest a better board if you can, I'm kind of afraid buying this one and getting an old revision)
RAM: No fucking idea, please help. Any thoughts on A-DATA sticks?
Everything else I'm salvaging from my current build:
Fractal Define R4
R9 290
Seasonic Platinum 660W

Ideally would like to keep the price under $350. Less is better, but only if it doesn't compromise the quality. Linux user, if it matters.

>>

No, if its a reference model you should replace it with a blower style fan. However if it has an aftermarket cooler you should place the fan as close to the heatsink as possible, e.g. by removing any visual plastic shrouds...

Looking to build a new machine with the 8-core Threadripper. I mostly do software development, but I'd also like to run a Windows VM with PCI passthrough for gaming. I have a few dumb questions:
>What are good brands for motherboards, RAM, and GPUs?
>Are AMD GPUs still basically required to do PCI passthrough, or does it work well with nvidia now as well?
>Does TR's quad channel RAM support actually improve memory access throughput/latency?
>How do I into water cooling? I figure if I'm going to try it then I might as well go all out and build a custom loop, so what's a good "babby's first custom loop" guide?

Not sure if budget is relevant at this point, but I'm aiming for $2,000, maybe up to $2,500 if necessary. I'm planning to reuse my current GPU and buy a second one for the Windows VM. May also reuse PSU (if it's big enough) and case.
>>
>>62216899
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jkRmtJ
This is what I intend to build

Current build is:
>FX 6300
>GTX 950 (same one in the list)
>8 GB of dual-channel ddr3 @803 MHz
>Toshiba HDD (one in the list)
>Asus VS228 monitor

Budget: aprox. 1100$

What I want to use this PC is as a workstation and a gaming PC (I am planning to buy a Zotac GTX 1070 a bit later)

Only thing that bugs me is RAM memory
Since I live in Serbia, components are 20-30% more expensive than in US, and specific manufacturers are rarely found so this is the list of available DDR4 RAM sticks that I can buy:
>Patriot DIMM DDR4 8 GB, 2133 MHz, PSD48G213381 (x2)
>Kingston Fury Black 8 GB, 2400 MHz, CL-15 (x2)
>GSkill DDR4 8 GB 2400 MHz, CL-17 (F4-2400C17S-8GNT) (x2)
>GSkill Aegis 2x8 GB 3000 MHz, CL-16

So the prices are:
>150$ for 2 sticks of Patriot memory
>198$ for Kingston
>160$ for GSkill
>170$ for GSkill Aegis
Yeah prices are fucked up desu

Any suggestions?

yes. having the m.2 slot below the top x16 pcie slot means the graphics card is above it which is bad for cooling the SSD. Look for a board with the m.2 slot above the PCIe slot. or one with a heatsink for it, but those are only found on much more expensive boards.

Samsung will most likely last you a bit longer, but the way SSDs work, it doesn't really matter who you choose among the major brands.

Buying an SSD is like buying a lottery ticket. Take the best deal you can get at the moment and hope you didn't get a sunday example.

HDDs are easier, just go WD or Toshiba. Rest is statistically proven shit.

>>62220065
I'd cash out the $99 required to get a brand new 24" 1080p IPS instead.

If money is an issue then just hop on the deal. I'd never personally buy a TN monitor if it wasn't specified for gaming though.

You might have lost the silicon lottery. Either up the voltage (ryzen is good for 1.42v with good cooling) or LLC. I would suggest moar volts and keep LLC to a low value (i.e non-aggressive) and try again.

For example my 1700 will do 3.8ghz at around 1.38v but 3.9 will spit out L1 cache errors regardless of voltage.

Go with CM cooler (or AiO watercooler (NZXT Kraken x42 is good budget choice) if you plan to have a case with transparent side)
And since the case has tempered glass window, try to colourmatch the components, like black gpu and mobo if the case is black and etc. Or just buy those and stuff them in fully closed case (Fractal Design define r5)

Nothing is special about the Gigabyte RAM, but the Asus RAM is ECC, because it was originally intended to be used as a NAS box until it kept dropping the shares.

The RAM for the Intel boards is not matching, and unless they patched it out, is limited to 2400Mhz.

My budget is around $1500 at most
It would mostly be used for gaming such as Witcher 3, Deus Ex, Doom plus any other games coming out in the next couple of years
Monitor is 1920x1080 with 75 Hz refresh rate
Looking to improve specs at around the same price if possible

I'm not to worried about an SSD right now since I'm going to pick that up in a month or 2 when I get some more money
Any more suggestions?

>gaming
CPU doesn't matter for gaming at this point. If you aren't buying a 1080ti your GPU is your bottleneck and you have no right to complain about Ryzen.
>>
My AMD Phenom II X4 955 has probably been obsolete for gaming for at least two or three years now. I didn't know as much about computers as I do now. when I built this machine seven years ago, so I not only want to upgrade but make a new gaming PC that's more suited to my life as a /g/ tard.

Gaming is the only hardware intensive thing I do. I bought a PlayStation 4 so I don't always have to do a boot into Windows but there's some games I just don't want to play with a controlleror and in the case of a strategy game like Endless Legend, isn't available for consoles. I'd like to be able to run these games on Windows 10 within a virtual machine so I wouldn't have to dual boot and can have 4chan and IRC on my second monitor. (I do this with my PS4 and I find it's the comfiest way to play games.) I guess my list of target benchmarks would look like;
> Killing Floor 2
> nuDoom
> Minecraft with shader mods (preferably within Linux)
> Dwarf Fortress.

I am a little confused as to what hardware has good support for pass-through for virtualization. I've done some research and it seems Nvidia chips detect if they're working in a virtual machine and refuse to work without extra steps to fool it. If this is true I'd rather not supporting Nvidia for this behavior. I've also heard something about a new virtualization technology that lets a single GPU work for a guest OS while still providing rudimentary graphics for the host. If this isn't far off I'd like to wait for it but I'm not sure what it's called, when it could expect it, or if it's true at all.

I would also like some advice or a good practices for using a ssd as my OS Drive running Linux. I plan for the windows VM to occupy its own storage Drive which may or may not be a solid state as well.

I'm thinking of spending somewhere around $1000-$1500 for what it is ultimately a behemoth toy of procrastination.

Corsair fucked up by using samsung memory in earlier revisions (which works great with ryzen) and then switching to hynix for later revisions (which is shit on ryzen) without even changing the model numbers, so QVL for corsair is often useless because it's based on earlier revisions no longer available.

Any G.skill at 3200 CL14 should have samsung b-die and work great on ryzen. You could also try waiting a bit for agesa 1.0.0.7 which should improve compatibility with hynix memory.

Strix X370-F or B350-F. Hero and extreme are all geared towards heavy overclockers(same VRM). X370F also have decent VRMs, but different(uses IR3555(?)instead of nexFETs, still very good mosfets).

4.7 on one core and 2 extra cores, so as long as you don't lose IPC compared to a 7700k it will be if it's not priced crazy higher

I don't want to stop what I'm doing on my main computer just because I want to play some Killing Floor 2. I can get a similar second screen experience with my laptop at my desk but it's much nicer to use a larger monitor that's already on my desk. I also feel it would be safer to avoid running Windows on bare metal. I think I saw someone claim you can create a dual boot setup and have virtualbox run the bare metal install of Windows in a VM. So I could build my computer with Windows virtualization being an option for later. Do all the parts you listed support PCI pass-through?

Also, why do you recommend giving a SSD to Windows and runing Linux on a hard drive?

and finally. . .
>implying Microsoft will honor what privacy settings I choose

1700x isn't future proofed for dick except app multitasking, by the time games (if ever) have the performance resulting code in more than one thread and not just from Draw Calls that even virtual cores help with...the CPU will be irrelevant.

Don't care. Inter-core latency shouldn't be a problem for my Coq and Rust builds, which are purely single-threaded.

Though, looking at the numbers again, I may downgrade to the 1800X. It's a 5-7% performance hit, but after factoring in the motherboard and cooling it's something like $350 cheaper.

Once the hot air hits the surface it will disperse around the case and naturally rise, then some of it would be pulled back in by the intake fans. Bad idea all around.

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) fans basically allows the motherboard to control them according to temperature if the motherboard have PWM fan headers (4-pin connectors like the ones you have in your motherboard instead of the typical 3-pin fan connectors before PWM fans are a thing). When I mean connect them normally you just plug them in like in pic related

If they don't have that am I better off just leaving them plugged into the case's controller? Then I can at least manually change between the three presets.

Budget around 800-900$
Playing light games (tf2, tekkit, Cities skylines)

Incredibly unfamiliar with motherboard options and accessories so I just kinda picked the first one I was that fit my form factor.

Yes as you mention that you can manually adjust the speed

>Picking a Rosewill case with PSU

Don't do this to yourself. Also get a smaller SSD (~250 GBs) and a 2 TB hard drive instead
>>
>>62225884
Thanks a bunch m8, glad I don't have to open it up again.
>>
>>62225884
>No Rosewill with PSU
I actually already have a case and PSU. I don't know why that was on the list.

>Split HDD's
I stream movies/youtube and don't download that many games. As such I only have about 200gb worth of stuff on my current computer so I figured the 500 had enough headroom without splitting the drives.

Fucking all cards are overpriced, they are $50-100 more than they were before summer started.
>>
>>62226257
What video card?
>>
>>62226257
Get better cooling.
You are spending $1500 already and skipping cooling?
Get a NH-D15 or a NH-U12S.

What's the better way to go about obtaining Windows 7? Downloading an official ISO and using DAZ Loader or just pirating a pre-activated version?
>>
>>62226335
Yes, also using MSI Smart tools if your PC motherboard doesnt have legacy USB support.

Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 that I got to be able to just barely play Fallout 4 a few years back. I would have sprung for 970, but muh 3,5 meme stopped me

>>62226317

I've never heard of either, I'll look into it. I assume that the the temp of the CPU affects its running speed. I've never used anything but a stock cooler.
>>
>>62226360
>GTX 960
In that case, CPU is way overkill for gaming and while you're at it get faster memory.
>>
>>62226360
Not running speed but your Maximum running speed, extreme overclocking gets your CPU really hot (70-100°C).

212 EVO is a good heatsink but for simple stuff not for a high end build.
>>
How do you guys protect the security of your fancy pcs?
>>
>>62226375
I'm not going to overclock.
>>
>>62226380
Eventually you will.

Still 212 EVO is good for mid tier overclocking, nothing too extreme.

I need help assembling my pc, idk where all these cables go and the manual isnt that specific. Can I get help here or should I just make a new thread for it?
>>
>>62226393
With the parameter that I'm not going to overclock, I think the 212 should be good.

What's a good gaming CPU?

I plan on upgrading my video card, I just wanted to get the rest of the system up and running first.
>>
>>62226406
Look for F_Panel in your motherboard.
>>
>>62226414
It really depends what video card you want. My ryzen 1600 works well with my 1070, but you may want 7700k or 1700/x for an even more powerful card.
>>
>>62226406
>>>/g/sqt
>>
>>62226419
I don't see an F panel. Is it in the manual somewhere?
>>
>>62226351
So that was a yes to the first option, right? Does DAZ usually work fine or do people frequently run into problems with it? I don't want to constantly be running into activation problems.
>>
>>62226450
Ok i will go there then
>>
>>62226471
DAZ works just fine, and is the most reccomended for leaving no traces and not sing shady ways to activate windows.

Download it from Mydigitallife forums if you have doubts where get the legit one.
>>
>>62226233
Not really, cards aren't even fast enough to max out pcie 2.0

So I've been playing video games on my 2012 asus rog laptop for five years and the last couple years I haven't been able to play a lot of newer AAA games. Been saving up money and looking to get an actual pc to game on. Is there any significant difference between https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/TNFfrH/great-amd-gaming-build and https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/wj7Ycf/great-intel-gaming-build? If so what are they and which of these 2 would you guys recommend?
>>
>>62226491
I'd get the Ryzen 5, back in the FX days it was 8 core or nothing for me, but that 6 core is just so good.
>>
>>62226510
Sounds good, I see a lot of good comments about Ryzen so I'm convinced. Will I need other parts or if I purchase all the stuff listed will that be enough? I am knowledgeable enough about this stuff to put it together with relative ease but not enough to 100% know what all to actually buy.
>>
>>62226551
The build guide seems to have everything you need except for an OS, but you can do a little piracy.

And in part picker form:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dJhfzM

Planning on buying this set. My friend is giving me a GTX 970 and, after buying an SSD to throw in as well, I feel like this is my best option for a cheap but good gaming rig. Are there any individual pieces you guys think I should replace? The part picker price is only a few bucks cheaper than the newegg set, so I figured I'd just go through them unless a different configuration would do me better for about the same price. I'm mostly trying to build a solid enough base that I'll be able to replace just the GPU down the road when I decide I want prettier graphics.

>>
>>62226736
Get a regular 1080p 60hz if you're not an enthusiast, the games will look fine and you won't be spending a shit ton.
>>
>>62226696
That's what I'm trying to avoid. I'm not going to be doing any VR, I don't have a 4k monitor, or anything like that. I just want to play current games on the pretty settings instead of the N64 settings.

>>62226662

I can't seem to get my ssd to each to work. I bought it to install windows onto, but when I boot and go to install it tells me this ssd isn't set up to take windows, that it's MBR and not GPT. I went into disk manager and formatted it, but it doesn't work. Am I missing a step? I added a new volume and whatnot. I just want to fall for the ssd meme already.
>>
>>62227039
how big is it? GPT shouldn't even be a thing below 2 TB
>>
>>62227116
250gig ssd. Like I said, no clue. I booted from a jump drive, went to install windows, and it just said "nope." No matter if I formatted it from disk manager and created a new volume, or formatted it from the install wizard. Something tells me that if I just buy another ssd I'll be fine, but this is bullshit
