Look how spotless this watch is, I almost couldn't believe it's like 18 years old. In the original box with papers and brochures and everything. I'm pretty pleased, even if the price was higher than ebay/chrono24 and the purchasing process is a pain in the ass. They make you jump through some hoops to verify your identity.

Check locally too especially if you're in a big city. DJs are pretty popular watches and you may find a gem in some local store, just be careful and do some research on it before you buy it.

Because you can clearly tell the ratio between face/case size from pictures.

Now the real question is, does case size mean horizontal case diameter, lug-to-lug distance, or case diameter with the crown? Sellers don't have a consensus on this.

>"Nonsense. Grand Seikos are probably the best finished production watches in the world, period. Seiko throws so much labour at the ~5,000 watches a year that Grand Seiko makes, that their level of finishing has more in common with JLC than Rolex.

If you cannot tell that level of finishing appart from a $400 Seiko, then you are an absolute pleb."

Grand Seiko obviously has better finishing than their SARX line as it has none at all... The cases are both finished well but GS obviously also gives slightly better bracelets. I honestly don't know why you care about the finishing on such a plain movement or why you would want a display caseback on half the GS's anyway...

> "Grand Seikos are probably the best finished production watches in the world, period. "

holy fuck you Seiko cucks are actually delusional.
>>
>>61914856
those watches are 38mm but their wear fucking huge... why does seiko make all their cases so fat?
>>
>>61916731
>Grand Seiko obviously has better finishing than their SARX line as it has none at all...
I was referring to case/bracelet/dial/hands finishing rather than movement finishing.

>holy fuck you Seiko cucks are actually delusional.
Do you understand what "production watches" means? It means series produced watches as opposed to handmade watches. Haute horlogerie brands are not production watches.

So, yes, Grand Seiko does have better finishing on its cases/dials/hands/bracelets and movements than Rolex, Omega, etc.

People have put them under microscopes, but macro photography should be good enough. I'm not the other guy, but I think he meant closer to mass-produced than just production. No one thinks than Seiko has better finishing than Lange, that's retarded. Seiko has better finishing than some of the really low-end Pateks (see beveling comparison image) but definitely not Pateks in general.

This is a macro photo showing the level of finishing on the hands and indices on a Grand Seiko.

Also haute horlogerie brands are not considered production watches period, Rolexes are probably the second best finished production watches after GS. Substitute "mass production" for production if that helps you understand the difference.

Rolex doesn't even attempt stuff like the alternating brushed and hand mirror polished finishes on components as small as segments of a hand, or surfaces on a baton. Rolex tends to use simpler single finishes on hands and batons, and the same is true of their cases and bracelets.

Even on their Cellini line they do not use nearly as much adjacent alternating finishing, nor are the polished portions hand mirror polished as they are on Grand Seikos. Just look at the edges of the dauphine hands here to see what I mean.

>>
>>61917246
the cellini hands are mirror polished.. just because they don't use alternating finishing which you didn't even post an example of doesn't meant hey have inferior finishing.. you are also comparing different watch styles.. you simply won't win .. there is no evidence anywhere that gs has better finishing.. Furhtermore GS has shit design.. their cases and dials look horrible compared to most Swiss designs.
>>
>>61917185
Beveled surfaces on hands and indices are a Seiko thing and they look great on Seikos, simpler but still very well done polished surfaces are the Rolex thing. I don't know why you people are arguing about this, they're different aesthetics and they're both good and done done to a very high standard. Maybe you should also consider that GS uses stainless steel which allows for the type of look that Seiko wants and Rolex uses white gold which allows for the look Rolex wants. It would be kind of silly to take white gold and start cutting sharp bevels into it, and trying to brush it would be even more retarded considering humanity has been coveting gold for millenia precisely because it's really shiny. You people just cannot appreciate different things for what they are, trying to rank everything into an objective power ranking from worst to best is literally autism.

one guy on the rolex forums says he thinks gs has better hand finishing on two watches that can't even be compared because of their totally different styles.. maybe you should consider you are clearly biased and that both watches are finished equally well. When you consider that the vast majority of people find seiko's case and dial design significantly lacking you'll then realize why they can't get away with charging even as much as a private seller charges for a second hand Rolex.

Just because I understand that finishing work actually costs labour time and that massively more hand finishing labour is spent on Grand Seikos than Rolexes does not make me biased. It is you that is conflating how much you like a brand with how much work is out into the finish. If you actually understood manufacturing you would realize how absurd it is for Seiko to throw as much labour at ~5,000 watches a year as they do with GS.

>>
>>61917997
You are the one that misunderstands. Just because one design requires more hand work does not mean the finishing itself is superior. I know a little bit about manufacturing as i am a machinist and program large multiple axes cnc machines on a daily basis. You are also grossly overestimating how much work goes into hand finishing gs's.

also not a single person here give a fuck about your fathers old datejust.. and its funny that you use that instead of some mystical grand seiko to show your legitimacy.

Guess that means Rolex is as good as ALS and every haute horlogerie watchmaker can shut down then! You've literally argued yourself into dismissing haute horlogerie in its entirety in your zeal to shitpost about Grand Seiko. Congratulations.

>You are also grossly overestimating how much work goes into hand finishing gs's
No I am not: https://youtu.be/2rnZhkTINV4

It's merely an efficient way of nipping "LMAAO UR JUST POOR!!!" arguments in the bud.
>>
>>61918469
my man have you ever hand polished metal? Rolex does it just as well as seiko.. what i am i saying i just because seiko has to polish more because their design it doesn't mean they are better at moving little sticks over edges with polish...I am not saying sieko has bad finishing rather it is not better than the finishing found on other top brands. I did not make the claim that seiko has the best finishing out of any serial production watch brand.

No one said you were poor.. that does not nip anything in the bud.. your video does not show that seiko is finished better than rolex. I did not dismiss anything and i am not shitposting.. You claim gs has the best finishing out of any brand that is not "haute horologerie" every brand besides Rolex you claimed did not produce a significant number of watches.. then keep saying gs has better finishing than rolex because their design has more polished parts... you just posted some video of some fucking nips assembling gs's... congratulations post a video of the rolex facility now. You have no argument whatsoever besides your clearly biased opinion because you jerk off to your vintage seikos and love talking about the two old seiko factories. All i ever said was that seiko did not have superior finishing to all other brands.. a claim you yourself made with no basis whatsoever.

Fossil is the definition of fashion watch and they're the reason that there's all those shitty designer watches out there. They also own Skagen.
They're not bad per-se, but just remember that you're getting one because it looks nice and not for things like accuracy or horological wankery.

Also check out eBay and outlet stores like Nordstrom Rack. I remember seeing Fossil watches in there all the time for less than MSRP.

Generally speaking, yes they are and they'll be more accurate than a mechanical wristwatch in the same price point, but there are cheap quartz movements out there that can be wildly inaccurate due to them being just pieces of shit. I think their movement being made as in house as it is is impressive and looks great (Have held one in person btw). My biggest issue is the case feels cheap. I totally get that but they are also different designs. The lug width is accentuated by the case design. The Nomos is a more traditional wrist watch with a round case and lugs extending out. Is legitimate, he hasn't lived in the USA for anywhere close to long enough to catch their shit accent. He has shown plenty of pics of him pre America so fake accent is a massive stretch. I don't like him or his videos but come on don't be retarded.
>backstory and aristocratic airs are all fake right?
Your talking about his grandfather? He had close ties to him growing up, that isn't that uncommon. He has 2 or so gifts from him that he treasures, not uncommon at all. He isn't and never was well off and Mr. Fancypants if you are getting at that. He has never tried to be that unless you equate his accent to status like a retarded American would.
Or are you talking about knowing his family history? which is not uncommon at all, I have a family crest ect I could show you, doesn't mean shit. Again only a retarded American would equate that to being rich or fancy.
>The whole channel exists to shill microbrand shitters to the gulible.
Seiko is a micro brand? Because that's really the only brand he bangs on about. That's just knowing his audience and catering to them. This is a step in the right direction to the real reason for not liking him imo.

You do know that there is more than one crest for every last name right?
You do know there are tens of thousands or more of nobles and that have had families right?
You do know that those families had families, and those families had families and so forth and can trace back to their noble ancestry right?
You do realise how large the number of people that could do that is right?
You do know that family heirlooms with some form of name and crest can and have been passed down through generations to first borne males for hundreds of years right?
You do realise being related to some distant distant noble means nothing right?
Say actual reasons for disliking him, don't make up theories about how things he has shown proof of are fake.

>The real cancer in the watch community is consumerists who totally fall for the modern art of watchmaking, which consists of treating the actual manufacturing of the watch as a cost center to be minimized in favour of the enhanced "prestige" that can be more easily created through marketing and advertising. Modern Omega being a prime example, though at least not so egregious as IWC and Panerai.

What the actual fuck are you talking about? Omega and IWC are much more than marketing and advertising. And what the actual fuck does that have to do with me pointing out that someone is better served buying a beater like an SKX as their first '''real automatic"" and then saving for an entry level luxury watch like a speedy or a second hand sub.

The marketing bullshit is stuff like TGV reviewing every $500-700 , Squale and Presage or Padi Seiko watch and using the words "luxurious" in every sentence. These (except Squale shit) are nice watches but doing a fucking disservice to poorfags becuase they keep getting hooked into watches that likely cost $100 to make tops.

Don't call out Omega because it's latest trend on /wt/, they do nothing egregious with their marketing other than put their watches in a movie or two. Yes I agree Panerai are watches for retards.

There has been at least one shitposter for at least the better part of the summer.
At least in their current iteration, he doesn't seem to shit up the thread on /fa/. I wonder if it is someone upset that the thread is on /g/ because they don't appreciate the technical aspects of watches, or if they are one of the people who think that generals don't belong on 4chan or /g/. There have been people in the Hirohito-approved meta threads voicing strong anti-general opinions, and I wouldn't be surprised if any of them took it on themselves to try and shit up their least-favorite generals. That is just musing. Maybe it is just some disgruntled individual with nothing better to do with their life.

You could get a new one for around the same price, so unless you're keen on that specific model, I'd look elsewhere. They were selling them on a 300% markup on my honeymoon cruise, but they were pretty nice pieces. Honestly I wouldn't go over 100 on one of those.

Ok, fine, I'll humor your for a minute: The Swatch Group's entire business model is built on treating the actual manufacturing costs of their watches as a pure cost center to be minimized because they believe that the primary product they are selling are not the physical watches themselves but rather the marketing generated meanings and feelings those totems are imbued with.

One excellent example of this is Omega's adoption of the co-axial escapement on a production basis even though the concept very obviously would not work in volume produced movements not using gold for shock absorption purposes.

Even though the ostensible purpose of the co-axial escapement is to extend service intervals Omega managed to actually reduce service intervals with their implementation, make the movements more sensitive to prompt and regular servicing, make them more likely to sustain significant damage if not serviced promptly, make them much more difficult to service, more expensive to service, and much more prone to being serviced incorrectly while also STILL having to lower the beat rate to make this abortion of an implementation work.

And rather than looking at the data and admitting this experiment did not work, instead their customers continue to get cucked with a movement fundamentally and obviously inferior in reliability to one with a Swiss lever escapement because Omega values their marketing memes over their customers, whom they see and treat as marks to be huckstered.

And if you don't believe me, you can hear it from no less than Al Archer himself:

It's just a sort of aesthetic rule. If the hands are too damn small for the dial it looks like shit. It's also an indicator that the movement is too weak for larger hands. Just look at the top right watch in this pic for example.
